I work with these poor kids every day. And no matter what parents do to their children, the children are always so forgiving. We just lost a 6 year old boy the other day because he hung up his pants after school inside out and his mothers boyfriend beat him to death. He was in our care until the mom could prove that her boyfriend no longer lived there. She lied and now that precious little boy is gone. 😢😢😢😢
Sitting here in the dark bawling my eyes out. Damn this cuts deep. I know it's subjective, but I've always thought Martina has the most beautiful and most powerful female voice in country music. She was never afraid to sing about the rough stuff too. I hadn't heard this song in years and God it's so beautiful and sad. Just heartbreaking

One thing about Martina she will sing about every topic that is awful. She has an amazing catalog of songs and not all of them are sad but she definitely covers topics that others won't
I got to see Martina McBride in concert years ago and her voice is even lovelier live. This song makes me cry every time. We have heard some very heavy songs on here lately and I get it...they are powerful and the story telling is perfection. May I suggest a song a little more uplifting but just as powerful? There is an underrated country artist named Lee Ann Womack who wrote a song for her daughters. It was a popular song and it even got turned into a sweet book. I often played the song for my girls and one Christmas gave each of them the book. When one of my daughter's was old enough she got an I Hope You Dance tattoo. I think you, being the father of a daughter. would enjoy this song. I hope you will check it out.
My husband taught 35 yrs & it was his work to turn it in . He went to houses to talk with parents. More than once we bought shoes. He coached track & would get those kids involved..
I wish more music was like this i grew up on this music i grew up with a mom that loved me yeah she had boyfriend that emotionally and mentally abused me but my mom would protect me best she could they never physically hurt me but she would play music like this and she said this was happening also one of my favourite songs is Cleaning out my Closet by Eminem but Martina McBride brings everytime she sings and Love you throw it is my favourite by her
Martina is amazing. Her voice and her choice of songs. Independence Day, God's Will, Broken Wing and Blessed are just a few of her incredible library of songs. You may recall that I told you that Loretta Lynn's story was the same as my mother's, ironically, my mother's maiden name is McBride. Again, however, no relation.
If you can handle another song about child abuse, I strongly suggest Pay Benatar's HELL IS FOR CHILDREN. It really rocks. Pat was a trained opera singer married to the lead guitarist, still touring after 50 years
Another great job! I got to see her 25+ y/o at a small county fare here in Virginia, USA with my girlfriend. I didn’t care for country music but she did. At the end as everyone was leaving she sat at a larger folding table to do autographs, we were able to meet her, she is an absolute sweetheart. I didn’t appreciate it then but now I do!!👍👍
She has such a powerful voice for her 5'4" frame and those blues eyes wow. Where I live, it's a law teacher, school staff, and us first responders must report even suspected abuse.

It's a heartbreaking song. I reacted to Independence Day, but it is currently blocked and now on Patreon until it's resolved. Will add Broken Wings to my list. Thanks
the man that wrote this song is loosely based it on a true story from a girl he knew when he was young. I saw Martina on a talk show where she talked about this. So sad and teachers should always report when they see a bruise on a child.
A powerful song by a great singer. Thanks for a very human reaction. Sad Little Girl by John Michaele Montgomery is another but more hopeful song on a tough childhood.
She is pure fire. Her voice is incredible. Check out a live version of Where Would You Be. Anyway is another great song by Martina with a great message.
Her live version of Sugar with her band is simply incredible… It’s a standout track on her live orbiting disc on To Venus and Back…. But, do yourself a favor and definitely check out her studio version of Sugar.. It’s different but great in its own right… Kinda always reminds me of something Prince would write.
This song is really great, and Martina's voice is incredible. However, That line about the teacher who "doesn't ask" always bothered me. I am now a retired teacher. First, if I saw those bruises, I would never have ignored it! I would have acted immediately, and I know I would have lost sleep over it. Secondly, it is the law to report it, so it is not even up to the teacher to decide. Unless you've taught school, you have no idea of what we saw every single day. I kept tabs on my kids, I checked in, I watched, I listened, and sadly, I sometimes cried. I bought clothes for students who were homeless, I bought school supplies, I gave lunch money more days than I could count, and I would do it all again.
Heartbreaking. Watched a crime story yesterday where the parents gave her little daughter medication (grinded pills) in her food. She got so ill, was hospitalized numerous times, the community gave donations, food, ect to the "wonderful caring parents " but they didn't stop because of the attention and monetary support until a nurse saw the mom giving her child meds in hospital. Luckily she went to foster parents. I will never understand that. TX Saeed. Greetings from South Africa
I remember Nov 1987...I was 15 in Winnipeg, Mb, Canada and our small team for volleyball won our division championships and we were so happy....and I thought my adopted father would be so proud of me...I was never great at sports but managed to make the team....anyways after our team celebrated I went home and got a savage beating from my adopted father. Afterwards in bed as I was crying out to God, I said, I wish I wouldn't wake up in the morning....I wanted to die....luckily a year later our family broke up and the authorities were called and he was eventually jailed...front page of the Winnipeg Free Press on Jan 12, 1990 read, "Ex missionary rubbed feces on daughter's face, court told!" This song makes me cry every single time for all those that silently suffered...

To me I don't know why the teacher didn't say anything cuz I used to work at a daycare and there were times that we'd have to call somebody cuz we suspect a child abuse and were what they call mandated reporters so that would have been the same way for the teacher
Teachers and health care providers are mandated reporters of suspected child abuse. I've made such calls a number of times. It can be frustrating when the abusers spin some BS story and we end up seeing the child in the ER again. Not always, but it does happen. It is better now than in the past, but still too many kids are caught up in abusive home situations. I still cry when I listen to this song 😭
Is a shame that children get caught in the problems of the parents, problems that they cant deal and they hurt their kids, alcohol and stress could do that,
"The Little Girl" - John Michael Montgomery Martina didn't start out intending to take on the difficult subjects in society. Somtimes you don't choose, but are chosen.

Saeed I am sorry and give prayers for you. Child Abuse I saw too much of as a RN Night emergency head Nurse. But I can identity with all of them. I was born dead to make it out of my Mother in 1952. I was forever different and from the time of my childhood knew my Mother's father was a pedofile that preyed on family as well as strangers. I watched my father/hero slowly die of a horrible brain cancer that took my hero into a unreognize animal howling for relief. Sixteen sucides in Father's and Mother's family made up my elementary years. Then I faced the community that for ever bullied my as an "outsider" till I escated at 17. Not all angels are concert. I became the crying RN on the shift with every new dead child. Some times you have to live with the pain of others all your life.
According to McBride, this is a true story based on her niece who was abused by her mother (McBride's sister) and killed at the young age of 7. Her niece was Angela Carter and her name is on the stone in the cemetery.
As a survivor of childhood abuse, this gets me everytime. No one paid enough attention to notice.
