There are HUNDREDS of "set up your daw" videos, this is the first one that has helped me. All the others assume you already know something (or a lot) of the process, this one starts at step one and helped tremendously, Thank you.
Hey everyone, I'm having a very specific issue that I am not able to solve and would really appreciate some help. When I insert a new track on Reaper, and then click the recording arm (in order to select my midi input option in the "input fx window"), there is a seriously loud signal noise that gets louder and louder by the second and doesn't stop until I change its default selection which is Mono: HD Audio Stereo track 1, to Midi input All Channels. So, I want to know why that sound is coming. When I was using Reaper on a different comp before, it wasn't like this. But now on my laptop, this signal clashing sound is coming and it is so freakishly loud to the point of almost giving me a heart attack. Please do assist me!!
@@aaryamannambiar6677 Sounds like a feedback issue I once had where I hadn't set up my interface properly so it was just using the microphone and speakers of my laptop. Make sure all your ins and outs are in the right place
I’m 70 years old and have never used a DAW. A friend who I played guitar with YEARS ago now wants to collaborate on some tunes from our past. I was completely baffled after installing Reaper and any other tutorials, or the documentation, were aimed at those who already have some background. So I got a focusrite solo gen II, found your videos, and off I go. I am so grateful for this content. I have no more hair to pull out.
12:20 Just wanna add a bit here. Since you're saying Reaper can be used fully without buying the program, I'd like to make sure people don't get this wrong: You can use it to produce music with all features, but if you want to sell that music, you do have to buy the license, legally speaking.
You can even sell your music using the reaper daw as long as you don’t make over a certain amount of money using it, I believe it is 20,000 dollars a year, they allow you to use the discounted license. It’s a pretty amazing company!
I for one am very happy this starts at square one. I have never used a DAW so I am satisfied completely with the video starting at the beginning. I like how this video was done too, professional and very well done. Thanks for doing this........it is great!

I'm a complete beginner, only heard about Reaper 2 days ago. This has to be one of the best tutorials on any subject that I have ever followed, and I mean over the last 50 years! Solved my setup issues on an old laptop, solved my problem hearing the playback. Brilliant!
3 years later this tutorial is still amazing! I'm new to Reaper and this tutorial by far helped me comprehend the basic ins and outs of the software! I love that you explained why we use specific settings instead of just saying "Use this because I said so" or assuming we knew all the terminology. Very excited to watch the next parts!

In the first fifteen minutes of watching this video, I've learned more about audio production than I have in the last fifteen months from googling terminology I didn't understand or were poorly explained in other software manuals. I've been ranting to my partner that whoever writes guides and manuals for DAW's seems to assume you have a Masters Degree in sound engineering and never try to teach you why you set up in a certain way. No, seriously - SERIOUSLY! You just HAVE TO WATCH THIS WITH THE SOUND MUTED! You HAVE TO! This man's presenting talents are UNBELIEVABLE! He really should be on mainstream TV for those gesticulations - holidays, automatic egg friers, the six o'clock news, footie, anything. You do an excellent job of explaining the basics without patronising your viewers. It works because you put yourself in the position of a beginner. Thank you very much for such a lucid tutorial. Afetr many years working in a RISCOS environment (look that up!) I am entering the C21st and dipping my ears into the DAW world - steep learning curve!

Amazing tutorial, Adam. I am one of those guys that grew up on Pro Tools because everyone in music production said you HAD to know that software, and that software only. I've been out of the game for about 5 years, just getting back into it now as a hobby and this has helped me tremendously after finding Reaper as an alternative to PT. I came to Reaper after finding out a colleague used it to record an EP with in his apartment. Having tried GarageBand and ProTools in the past, I am still a beginner. I downloaded Reaper while following this video. My interface is a Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen and I was able to update the driver as he explains. So far all of these steps are working perfectly as described. Thanks for the easy to follow presentation. I am really looking forward to this program.
This is a great video I have had Reaper for at least 5 years, maybe more, and have I used it on and off for that time but just could not get it to work properly for me. Yesterday I decided to take the plunge and move to Reaper completely as I've been using two Korg D1600 machines midi'd together. I have a Behringer X Air 18 as my audio interface and an X touch as my mixing desk, I like to touch faders. :) I am not a novice but I thought let me see if there is anyone who might be able to give me some more info on my setup as I'm determined to make it work. I found this video and I must say this is the most comprehensive tutorial on Reaper that I've seen IMO. I will be going on to part 2. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you. I'm an old analog head tryn to adapt to digital. I grabbed Reaper because it looked more like an analog setup. That didn't help. I watched, all the while tryn not to jump ahead, and once i heard myself thru my interface, and knew I was in the right place. Good job!

I started watching this with trepidation when I saw it was an hour long and you said you started with the basics, which I thought I knew. Apart from the installing Reaper bit at the very beginning (I have been using Reaper just as a VST host for my Akai EWI windsynth), there was absolutely loads for me to learn, especially little/big things like selecting and the timeline (never needed to record anything with the EWI). I'm glad I took the time to watch. Many thanks for the tutorial.
I agree with all of the other viewers that this instructional video is the very best quality possible! Here, you have a DAW that is, apparently, awesome, and a guy who can explain it in a straightforward way that is super easy to understand. The other part of it is that Adam has true passion for what he is doing, and that comes through so strongly! This is truly inspirational! Like other users, it gave me a huge inspirational boost that made me want to get Reaper (right now!), get it going, and get beyond all of the frustrating and disappointing experiences I have had from the other DAWS I have tried up to this point. First, I just want to say you are a tremendous educator. Here you’re teaching the basics of Reaper but I’ll bet whatever you chose to teach would have the same brain-to-brain contact that you’ve achieved with this video. I really enjoyed this video at that level alone. As someone who has been “DAW shopping”, I have been pretty overwhelmed by all the things I’ve had to learn and choose. This video let me put a stake in the ground: I’m using Reaper. I’m confident that I can learn it quickly via your tutorial series. This will save me hours as a relative newbie and will help me get the end-result I need. I have a very part-time need to do good instructional videos of my own for my company. I’m not a musician or producer, so a lot of this won’t apply to me. But learning the fundamentals with your musical illustrations is perfect. What a great tutorial. You explain things in great detail, always work at the same speed, talk clearly, and display things so they are easy to see. This has helped me a lot. I watched too many tutorials where they start out as you do but then they would be clicking everywhere and start working much faster all over the place and I get lost pretty quick.
I am completely and utterly new to trying anything music-related. I've been looking into trying to get into making like synthwave music like Stranger Things and such but I am a complete blank slate when it comes to knowing anything about anything like this, so, this was incredibly helpful for someone who didn't even know the remote basics of anything. Recently bought a Donner DED 200 electric drum kit and could not figure out how to set up MIDI drums after LITERALLY HOURS of googling, watching videos, etc. I even found an entire reddit thread by a bunch of software programmers who trouble-shot the source code from the drum brain and claimed that specific model of e-drum kit was faulty and that there was no hope for MIDI recording. I watched this video and got it to work right away lol. Super helpful. Thank you so much!
Hello my friend, I downloaded Reaper yesterday on my PC, I've been using Logic on my Mac for year's and been using Ableton Live 10 on PC. I would just like to say a massive thanks to you for your videos on Reaper...your my go to guy for learning this DAW...there sure is a lot to it isn't there:) I'm seriosly impressed with it so far. Anyways off to watch your other tutorials now. Once again, thank you for your tutorials, I think how you do it is fantastic and great to follow. Cheers.
Regarding latency: the human threshold for real time is 16 ms. Above that the brain is able to discern a delay. Just leaving that here as a little info. Great video though!
I am not sure if that is correct because if I double a solo guitar track and add 10 to 20 ms of delay, I can certainly tell the difference. (Doing this creates the audio impression of the delayed track being a separately recorded track.) On the other hand, if I try using less than 10 ms of delay, I can't hear a difference, unless I reduce it down to 0ms, then is just sounds wrong, because of it being a duplicate track.
10-15 is ok for say keyboard vstis but many will want 1-8 for real-time input/output. Depends. For edrumming connected to vsti for example, lowest possible, which for me is 1ms in and 1ms out.
@@ButeSound Agreed, you definitely do not want latency for drums, and more than 6 ms will throw you/the player off if recording a live guitar. In my example, I was talking about tracks that are recorded dry, the duplicated track and and added delay is for creating the impression of a doubled track. It's a great time saver if you are mixing on a strict schedule.
So I've tried multiple tutorials and multiple DAWs. But this one is the only good one, where the person actually talks as if he's instructing a complete beginner. Very well done! I'm going to stick with Reaper because of this tutorial now, and also because Reaper is pretty similar to Sony Vegas which I already know well.

Now with social distancing I’m going to record at home and send tracks to my producer. He suggested I look at Reaper and some free DAWs instead of ProTools since he says the learning curve is steep. Thankfully a Google search led me to this video straightaway, and I'm glad it did. I just installed Reaper tonight, so I'm starting with zero knowledge about it. Although I'm not a complete stranger to audio mixers and simple recording projects, I needed something that started with the basics from installation onward. Since most of my Reaper use will be mixing down tracks recorded live on the Soundcraft mixer at my band's shows, I'm really looking forward to continuing with this entire series. Hey Adam, thanks a bunch for this. A consultant now, I have worked as executive producer and post production manager in advertising production, and been an amateur guitar player for a few centuries... ;) have edited on Final Cut quite a bit in my time, but never ever used a DAW or recorded any music, though I'm familiar with the concepts I guess. Just rebuilding my guitar rig and acquiring basic audio equipment as I'd like to record stuff at home, maybe ambient music (or doom metal depending on the day hahaha). Looked at a couple of DAWs, instantly liked Reaper for its intuitive interface, started yesterday.... so it's noob day 2... thanks for your vid, very clear, straightforward info based on pragmatic questions, just the perfect pace, you have a definite talent for teaching. I wish this video was here when I started with reaper. I found it a nitemare to set up with omnisphere, eventually I found a track routing template for omnisphere and reaper on spectrasonics website. This is an excellent vid.

thank you i downloaded reaper and love it solved my problem i was having recording with my new computer and set up as i am new to all of this but did it 10 years ago with adobe studio i was so frustrated man you saved me i was ready to give up and sell it all my issue was not knowing how to set up and sync my focusrite scarlett solo to my new computer and that whole buffer rate and progect rate was set to 41 on the computer and my scarlett was 48 and was a bad out of time delay thanks for the video im well on my way to having fun making music again

Looks mean nothing to sound (although you can customize it how you please), it can’t possibly sound better because that’s now how DAWs work, and any other arguments seem to stem from you being a Cubase user and staunchly defending “your thing” simply because of closed-minded territorial affirmations rather than anything solid. Come back when you’ve got some real substance.
@@adamsteelproducer It still blows me away how people will blindly crap all over something. I am by no means an expert but the value reaper brings is untouchable. I am still trying to learn all the things it can do and I have a long way to go. $60 is amazing for what you get, if there is a better DAW for that kind of money I'm yet to find it. Thanks for the amazing information in this series, it is a vital part of my learning, I wouldn't be half as far along as I am without them.
Great video - I've been using Reaper for over ten years, but recently I've been going back over my software and hardware for any blind spots, so I thought I'd watch through these as I usually find there's always at least one thing I didn't realise or could be doing easier/faster. Not only was this a good way of checking stuff I already knew because the pace of it, but it made me double check my settings and realised there were a couple of bits - buffer and bit rate recording size - that I could tweak and improve. Anyway, thanks!
I’ve been recording on Reaper for a year or so only with the knowledge that a friend taught me in 15 minutes. So glad I finally decided to sit down and watch this tutorial. I'm a complete beginner, only heard about Reaper 2 days ago. This has to be one of the best tutorials on any subject that I have ever followed, and I mean over the last 50 years! Solved my setup issues on an old laptop, solved my problem hearing the playback. Brilliant!
3 years later this tutorial is still amazing! I'm new to Reaper and this tutorial by far helped me comprehend the basic ins and outs of the software! I love that you explained why we use specific settings instead of just saying "Use this because I said so" or assuming we knew all the terminology. Very excited to watch the next parts!

In the first fifteen minutes of watching this video, I've learned more about audio production than I have in the last fifteen months from googling terminology I didn't understand or were poorly explained in other software manuals. I've been ranting to my partner that whoever writes guides and manuals for DAW's seems to assume you have a Masters Degree in sound engineering and never try to teach you why you set up in a certain way. I came to Reaper after finding out a colleague used it to record an EP with in his apartment. Having tried GarageBand and ProTools in the past, I am still a beginner. I downloaded Reaper while following this video. My interface is a Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen and I was able to update the driver as he explains. So far all of these steps are working perfectly as described. Thanks for the easy to follow presentation. I am really looking forward to this program.
This is a great video I have had Reaper for at least 5 years, maybe more, and have I used it on and off for that time but just could not get it to work properly for me. Yesterday I decided to take the plunge and move to Reaper completely as I've been using two Korg D1600 machines midi'd together. I have a Behringer X Air 18 as my audio interface and an X touch as my mixing desk, I like to touch faders. :) I am not a novice but I thought let me see if there is anyone who might be able to give me some more info on my setup as I'm determined to make it work. I found this video and I must say this is the most comprehensive tutorial on Reaper that I've seen IMO. I will be going on to part 2. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
the d1600 was a very solid machine for what it was. i got rid of mine a long time ago but they really did the job.

Thank you. I'm an old analog head tryn to adapt to digital. I grabbed Reaper because it looked more like an analog setup. That didn't help. I watched, all the while tryn not to jump ahead, and once i heard myself thru my interface, and knew I was in the right place. Good job!

I started watching this with trepidation when I saw it was an hour long and you said you started with the basics, which I thought I knew. Apart from the installing Reaper bit at the very beginning (I have been using Reaper just as a VST host for my Akai EWI windsynth), there was absolutely loads for me to learn, especially little/big things like selecting and the timeline (never needed to record anything with the EWI). I'm glad I took the time to watch. Many thanks for the tutorial.
I agree with all of the other viewers that this instructional video is the very best quality possible! Here, you have a DAW that is, apparently, awesome, and a guy who can explain it in a straightforward way that is super easy to understand. The other part of it is that Adam has true passion for what he is doing, and that comes through so strongly! This is truly inspirational! Like other users, it gave me a huge inspirational boost that made me want to get Reaper (right now!), get it going, and get beyond all of the frustrating and disappointing experiences I have had from the other DAWS I have tried up to this point. First, I just want to say you are a tremendous educator. Here you’re teaching the basics of Reaper but I’ll bet whatever you chose to teach would have the same brain-to-brain contact that you’ve achieved with this video. I really enjoyed this video at that level alone. As someone who has been “DAW shopping”, I have been pretty overwhelmed by all the things I’ve had to learn and choose. This video let me put a stake in the ground: I’m using Reaper. I’m confident that I can learn it quickly via your tutorial series. This will save me hours as a relative newbie and will help me get the end-result I need. I have a very part-time need to do good instructional videos of my own for my company. I’m not a musician or producer, so a lot of this won’t apply to me. But learning the fundamentals with your musical illustrations is perfect. What a great tutorial. You explain things in great detail, always work at the same speed, talk clearly, and display things so they are easy to see. This has helped me a lot. I watched too many tutorials where they start out as you do but then they would be clicking everywhere and start working much faster all over the place and I get lost pretty quick.
I am completely and utterly new to trying anything music-related. I've been looking into trying to get into making like synthwave music like Stranger Things and such but I am a complete blank slate when it comes to knowing anything about anything like this, so, this was incredibly helpful for someone who didn't even know the remote basics of anything. Recently bought a Donner DED 200 electric drum kit and could not figure out how to set up MIDI drums after LITERALLY HOURS of googling, watching videos, etc. I even found an entire reddit thread by a bunch of software programmers who trouble-shot the source code from the drum brain and claimed that specific model of e-drum kit was faulty and that there was no hope for MIDI recording. I watched this video and got it to work right away lol. Super helpful. Thank you so much!
Hello my friend, I downloaded Reaper yesterday on my PC, I've been using Logic on my Mac for year's and been using Ableton Live 10 on PC.
I would just like to say a massive thanks to you for your videos on Reaper...your my go to guy for learning this DAW...there sure is a lot to it isn't there:) I'm seriosly impressed with it so far.

Regarding latency: the human threshold for real time is 16 ms. Above that the brain is able to discern a delay. Just leaving that here as a little info. Great video though!
A little above that is a "frame" in terms of 60FPS videogames (16.67ms), funny how close those two times are.
I am not sure if that is correct because if I double a solo guitar track and add 10 to 20 ms of delay, I can certainly tell the difference. (Doing this creates the audio impression of the delayed track being a separately recorded track.) On the other hand, if I try using less than 10 ms of delay, I can't hear a difference, unless I reduce it down to 0ms, then is just sounds wrong, because of it being a duplicate track.
10-15 is ok for say keyboard vstis but many will want 1-8 for real-time input/output. Depends. For edrumming connected to vsti for example, lowest possible, which for me is 1ms in and 1ms out.
@@ButeSound Agreed, you definitely do not want latency for drums, and more than 6 ms will throw you/the player off if recording a live guitar. In my example, I was talking about tracks that are recorded dry, the duplicated track and and added delay is for creating the impression of a doubled track. It's a great time saver if you are mixing on a strict schedule.

So I've tried multiple tutorials and multiple DAWs. But this one is the only good one, where the person actually talks as if he's instructing a complete beginner. Very well done! I'm going to stick with Reaper because of this tutorial now, and also because Reaper is pretty similar to Sony Vegas which I already know well.

Thankfully a Google search led me to this video straightaway, and I'm glad it did. I just installed Reaper tonight, so I'm starting with zero knowledge about it. Although I'm not a complete stranger to audio mixers and simple recording projects, I needed something that started with the basics from installation onward. Since most of my Reaper use will be mixing down tracks recorded live on the Soundcraft mixer at my band's shows, I'm really looking forward to continuing with this entire series. A consultant now, I have worked as executive producer and post production manager in advertising production, and been an amateur guitar player for a few centuries... ;) have edited on Final Cut quite a bit in my time, but never ever used a DAW or recorded any music, though I'm familiar with the concepts I guess. Just rebuilding my guitar rig and acquiring basic audio equipment as I'd like to record stuff at home, maybe ambient music (or doom metal depending on the day hahaha). Looked at a couple of DAWs, instantly liked Reaper for its intuitive interface, started yesterday.... so it's noob day 2... thanks for your vid, very clear, straightforward info based on pragmatic questions, just the perfect pace, you have a definite talent for teaching. thank you i downloaded reaper and love it solved my problem i was having recording with my new computer and set up as i am new to all of this but did it 10 years ago with adobe studio i was so frustrated man you saved me i was ready to give up and sell it all my issue was not knowing how to set up and sync my focusrite scarlett solo to my new computer and that whole buffer rate and progect rate was set to 41 on the computer and my scarlett was 48 and was a bad out of time delay thanks for the video im well on my way to having fun making music again

Ok go on..... how? Reason as a VST doesn’t lend any weight to an argument- so why is Cubase better than Reaper? Actual reasons please.
Looks mean nothing to sound (although you can customize it how you please), it can’t possibly sound better because that’s now how DAWs work, and any other arguments seem to stem from you being a Cubase user and staunchly defending “your thing” simply because of closed-minded territorial affirmations rather than anything solid. Come back when you’ve got some real substance.

I am still trying to learn all the things it can do and I have a long way to go. $60 is amazing for what you get, if there is a better DAW for that kind of money I'm yet to find it. quick question - do you know if theres a way to program quintuplets in reaper for drumbeats etc?
Great video - I've been using Reaper for over ten years, but recently I've been going back over my software and hardware for any blind spots, so I thought I'd watch through these as I usually find there's always at least one thing I didn't realise or could be doing easier/faster. Not only was this a good way of checking stuff I already knew because the pace of it, but it made me double check my settings and realised there were a couple of bits - buffer and bit rate recording size - that I could tweak and improve. Anyway, thanks!
I’ve been recording on Reaper for a year or so only with the knowledge that a friend taught me in 15 minutes. So glad I finally decided to sit down and watch this tutorial.
