I was in Japan before the internet became part of everyone's daily life. True, it was harder to follow what was happening at home... but you could read the newspaper, and movies did make it to Japan several months after they were in North America. Letters and telephone calls were important for keeping in touch with people, but much like you said, you spaced them out over months. It was different, and not so immediate, but it worked well enough for most people.
I lived in Taiwan for 2 years when I was a teenager. Your description of not being able to figure out what a store is all about from the outside was hilarious! About being homesick for something that doesn't exist anymore made me a little sad for you, but just from my experience it doesn't matter if the people and the home or things are still there when you get back, it is never the same. Things change, people change. It's never the same so your memories are better than reality anyway. :-)
Sorry! We are done filming all the questions, so I will answer your question here! We don't really know. We don't have cable (not sure if that's what they would call it here) and the channels that do come through on the tv are more general viewing and might show the highlights of a game or two.
Loving this series! 2 quick things - Since you show off stuff you find to eat all the time, and since I got to know Eric originally because we're both into gaming, maybe more occasional arcade vids to highlight cool new stuff you've found? 2nd, even though you said you don't want to waste time on the negative things, maybe it'd be both fun and cathartic to just do one "pet peeve" episode where you can have a laugh about some of the things that've irked you the most about daily life in Japan?
i know i've said this before, but this still blows my mind. years ago i found out about your music through a futurama forum. and being obsessed with the idea of moving to japan in the future i found your channel. name sounded familiar, checked the band page, saw erics photo and my mind was blown through the back of my skull
I really appreciate your responses to all of these questions ( both silly and serious.) My friend and I plan to move to Tokyo in the coming year and a half, and you've really helped me get a proper mindset before making this trek. I just wanted to say thank you very much for taking the time to answer these important questions. :)
Ahh, ahah, actually I just added that button last night, you didn't miss anything! Thank you so much, by the way! We are in the early stages of making big plans and any amount of financial support is going to help us a lot! Really, thank you so much! -Eric
I'm sorry but all the questions for this video have been filmed. So, I'll answer your question here. We don't live in China, so we don't know much about authentic Chinese food. We have no idea.
Cool, I got my question answered! I actually ate at a Yayoiken in Ueno last May when I was in Tokyo and I did have the Katsudon so I'm in total agreement with Kyde that it is awesome. The tempura/soba/udon chain store with the blue & yellow sign is another fave of mine so give their combos a try, especially the soba one.
He said "Tokyo Swallows" and the 14 year old in me laughed out loud. :) Made me wonder if they play the "Yokohama Spitz"? :) Still laughing. More please :)
Re kids reactions to foreigners: I visited a friend who lives in a small rural community north of Tokyo. Her 2-year-old nephew had never seen a foreigner before and was scared of me. But when you think about it, his reaction makes sense: he had never seen a caucasian or a person with blonde hair and blue eyes before. In that area I never saw another foreigner. Definitely a very different place versus Tokyo, Kyoto, etc. where foreigners are common.
Kyde and Eric I you want to see them, I have some shots on Instagram. Here's Berkeley (the older pug- 8 years old) on the chair, and Smokey the "kid" (5 years) on my lap. They have a sibling rivalry going. instagram.com/p/j-QEdqmTqf They're not my dogs but I love them anyway.
Oh yes, there's "Pug People" my downstairs neighbours have two, and are totally in love with them. So am I for that matter- I have known the older pug since he was small enough to be carried in one hand, so I am part of the family too. I'm not a dog person, but pugs aren't like regular dogs. Me, my next door neighbour and the folks downstairs are all pug people now. I have a link to Instagram on my RUclips page, there's pics of them there.
I miss driving fast too!!!!!! going from 75mph to 60km cheese n gravy back in the states I lived 34mi from work tool only 45 min to get there here that would be 2 hours easy
I had to pause your video and my 3 year-old daughter, Betsey, points and asks who you are. This is how the conversation went: me: "Kyde and Eric." Betsey: "Oh. I want Kyde and Eric for Christmas!" At this point I just about died laughing. My kid says the most random things! LOL (Oh, and before this it took me several days to figure out that when she was asking to "watch Japanese videos" she was referring to your videos! She is a huge fan of yours! lol)
You chose bickle when you could have had DekavitaC? That is one of my favourite drinks.... of course the reason is because I had to run like mad to catch a train one day, and that was the only drink they sold on the platform, and it tasted delicious after that furious sprint.
We don't attend church in Japan, but there are Japanese churches. We won't be making a video of one though. We aren't church goers and we don't want to make people who do feel like we are making a spectacle of them.
I gotta agree. Compared to "Murricans" you're used to seeing on crappy reality tv Kyde and Eric feel way more chill and down-to-earth and happy to be where they are, instead of some kind of angry, frustrated, self-centered and self-entitled jerks you often see in popular media. More happy-go-lucky Travel Channel special than obnoxious MTV characters. They also completely lack the hipster, d-bag "I was into this before it was cool" mentality. They're people I'd want to have for real friends. :)
I know the difference between the two, and I never noticed we used it interchangeably...but upon your comment I realize we do sometimes. No idea why. -Eric
Yeah haha, we don't really get Taiwanese coins in our caches up here! I notice your undying dedication to replying to every single persons comments & that's awesome. Seriously. Great job! Oh yes, and another question: Playstation or Nintendo? (for some reason I'm getting a Nintendo vibe from you guys) lol.
fun fact yellow is the 1st color the human eye will see and the last color to disappear at dept under water. That is why they make SCUBA tanks that shade of bight yellow ... white is good too because technically it has the yellow spectrum in it..
We might put together a gaming video in the future. We do have pet peeves, but nothing worthy of a video or enough to fill the proper time slot with. So, you probably won't be seeing one of those videos in the future.
Y'all should watch creigslist joe!! It's on Netflix and it's a great documentary. I'm sure y'all would love that movie. And maby It will inspire you to do something similar to that in the states.
We weren't concern about the eating with hands, we were more surprised that they were able to stomach all the bacteria that was trying to eat us alive!
That would be a great video! My mom might get mad if I put out her recipe though. She'll get over it! We have filmed a cooking video for my chicken stir fry! When there isn't a bigger video to put up, we'll cut it up and send it out!
I love watching your videos! If you guys are ever near Atsugi base I can totally hook you up with some Taco Bell lol. I totally understand about buying clothes here. I am a 6'1" woman so it's pretty impossible to find clothes that fit here so the internet is definitely my friend for that.
American's seem to use the words burger and sandwich interchangeably, is there a difference? In New Zealand there is a pretty clear distinction between the two...
My family only has Toy Rat Terriers! and Milo and otis was my favorite movie when I was a child, my "fake" grandma bought it for me.(Step brothers and sisters G maw.)
Hey, there's a famous old man in Japan who dresses in a school girl uniform, and I think that was him you just mentioned. He was featured in a documentary on BBC i think.
Pretty clever the way you set up some questions with being in a location to illustrate a point! Did it just happen or was there lot of location scouting beforehand?
...no boogers in the soup from this end, you guys. And I will try my best to let you know when I head over to Japan(note: it defiantly won't be for just one week.) Thanks for answering my questions! ^.^
It would seem weird to some that you guys are not all that into sports, but then again im a die hard bulls and Blackhawks fan. And im a fantasy sports fanatic too. Virginia doesn't really had a major sports teams anyways, so I guess that might explain it. I suppose people from Virginia might be redskins fans.
If I ever wanted to send you a tube of McVitie's chocolate hob-nobs,, how could this be? And if you like fun punky music, try Small town England by New Model Army
Lame to hear about the uncool caches, but that would be really great to meet up and go hunting! I try to check all the spammed comments that I see! Gotta make sure no one gets missed!
Hi, I enjoy all your video. Do you attend Church in Japan? If not, can you show some video of the Japanese church around the city you are staying now? Thanks.

Hah, part of me wants to go but part of me doesn't want to provide any sort of funding to the regime there. Even going to Myanmar created a bit of a moral dilemma for us which we had to balance to decide if we wanted to visit. I'm glad we did. -Eric
I love learning more abut you guys!! So fun. I love these Q and A videos.
***** Yay! -Eric
Yeah, we have seen the documentary, it's good! We also get to see him every now and again!
still blows my mind you took the time to respond to my question. thanks guys. from Maryland with love
Richard Frank We try out best to respond to everyone! -Kyde

Yuzu is the BEST! I describe it as a mix of orange, lemon and grapefruit. Really, it's a totally unique citrus flavour. Love it.

OMG Milo and Otis was my fave movie since I was a little kid lol. Can't beat the classics!!
You are awesome! I thinking about showing it to my kids in class! The legend must continue in Japan!
We are thinking about traveling during that long weekend. We are in Musashi-Urawa now.
Umeshu is awesome. I used to get those all the time in Taiwan just for the plum that normally comes at the bottom.
rr33463 Yea, it's amazing! -Eric

There's more than one to love!!
Cool, I got my question answered! I actually ate at a Yayoiken in Ueno last May when I was in Tokyo and I did have the Katsudon so I'm in total agreement with Kyde that it is awesome. It's not weird at all, we would love to show you some penguin interactions!
We try not to be too loud, hahaha. -Eric
We will do more food reviews! We are posting regularly. We are doing 1 video, maybe 2, a week.
We could definitely meet up sometime when a free moment happens!
That question will be address in one of the videos!
Yes. -Eric
We might put together a gaming video in the future.

Can I request you do another 'Cooking with Kyde' video for your awesome chicken soup? :)
That would be a great video! My mom might get mad if I put out her recipe though. She'll get over it! We have filmed a cooking video for my chicken stir fry! When there isn't a bigger video to put up, we'll cut it up and send it out!
i love kyde's Wrinkle
i just keep focusing on her forehead
wow!!! unbelievable!!! how about next week?? where are youguys staying anyway??
Awesome!
We already filmed all the questions, so this one won't get in. We really like Heavy Rotation by AKB48. We sing it all the time at Karaoke!
Bikkel looks from colour a lot like Yakult probiotic yogurt (fermented milk) drink.
May be their same in flavor?
It's a family that has a lot of pug dogs! -Kyde
Thanks for being booger free!
I love watching your videos! If you guys are ever near Atsugi base I can totally hook you up with some Taco Bell lol. I totally understand about buying clothes here. I am a 6'1" woman so it's pretty impossible to find clothes that fit here so the internet is definitely my friend for that.
You're such a nice couple.
Ayaman Japan's Poi Poi is the best song ever. If you want to see us sing it you need to come to Karaoke with us! -Eric

We actually don't really watch other people who live in Japan. We tend to watch science and video game youtube channels. -Eric
Hey, there's a famous old man in Japan who dresses in a school girl uniform, and I think that was him you just mentioned. He was featured in a documentary on BBC i think.
Hahaha, cause I look good! -Eric
Pretty clever the way you set up some questions with being in a location to illustrate a point! Did it just happen or was there lot of location scouting beforehand?
We didn't scout anything, we just walked and filmed. -E
...no boogers in the soup from this end, you guys. And I will try my best to let you know when I head over to Japan(note: it defiantly won't be for just one week.) Thanks for answering my questions! ^.^

I think you missed it. I said Hi-Chu and I was talking about the candy being one of my favorite Japanese snacks.
Lame to hear about the uncool caches, but that would be really great to meet up and go hunting! I try to check all the spammed comments that I see! Gotta make sure no one gets missed!
Hey! Speaking of tacos? How is the Mexican food over there? Do they Japanese it? Sushi tacos?
Hi, I enjoy all your video.
Do you attend Church in Japan? If not, can you show some video of the Japanese church around the city you are staying now? Thanks.
Yee you asked my question! But my name is different now because I hated having a 2 on the end of my name.... but also yay new video! :D
I like that us being Xbox fans wasn't even an option. hahaha. -Eric
39:31 Lol... You guys haven't been here to Kamisu City (Especially Hasaki/Doai area), people who know where Kamisu City will (I'll be super surprised) know what I'm talking about.
HAha, really? We want to go to Ibaraki soon. Are people staring often? -E
Ooooh yes. It doesn't happen in every place in Ibaraki. It happens usually in the most inaka part of Kamisu. I can get away with the stares because I am Asian, but I did experienced how bad it gets when I was groceries shopping with my friend who is obvious not Asian. Here, it's not just the kids who stare, the old people and adult do that too. Worst thing about it is, if you caught them staring, they won't look away. They continue stare at you. EVEN when you ask them "What is it?" in Japanese (Happened for real when I was grocery shopping with my friend who isn't Asian). It's freaking stalk-ish and weird! We could do an experiment if you want to come to Kamisu. ;P
Haha, I want to come now! Sounds really out of place for Japan, more like experiences we have had in other countries. -E
lol, it is kinda out of place around here. Honestly. And because there's no train system here, you have to have a car to get around this "city". :P
you guys should watch the 1980 something movie "The killing fields" its about cambodia,, hell u all have been to the place.. its a masterpiece of a movie and one of my favorites of all time... wanna know how to watch it right now? like right this second.. pm me!
because you are so laid back, and chill is partly why,i cant explain the rest.... i just get this canadian vibe lol. im from british columbia canada...maybe thats more accurate you seem like a british columbian lol. Are you from seattle?
I have never seen this other chain, but I want to try it. Can you figure out how to message me a link to the sign or something?
Did you get the job at Joytalk before you came to Japan or after?
Funfact. Bikkel. (not bikkle) is also a Dutch word meaning: Tough guy/ Big Boy.
You know a real man not a weennie whinny man.
You guys should do North Korea. Can't get much more otherworldly than that.
Hah, part of me wants to go but part of me doesn't want to provide any sort of funding to the regime there. Even going to Myanmar created a bit of a moral dilemma for us which we had to balance to decide if we wanted to visit. I'm glad we did. -Eric
