He didn’t mention anything about the back tabs or the wings/netting being totally different from the regular 4s, which does make a complete difference. It was never made to be a skater shoe, but more skater friendly if wanting to skate in 4s.
or the new shape. this was actually a really bad review in terms of discussing changes and facts about the SB version, it's weird. not up to normal rose anvil standards at all
@@nickkalister6291 Really, for SKATING it does... REALLY... REALLY, the back tabs and netting or am I missing something lmao. Sounds like the most aesthetic picking vs how that relates to SKATING them. It is LITERALLY a skating shoe branded as such and "Made" as such???? That's why it was thrown in the SB line not the regular Jordan, NON SB, aka non skate line... Is this a troll or am I actually this lost? 🤣 It literally was marketed as a skate shoe and sold as such, not a "skate friendly" shoe. If you meant the Jordan 4's were never meant as such cool, the SB ones are supposed to be. It's about the changes as the relate to SKATEBOARDING, not just any ol changes no? And this wasn't even heavy skating so imagine how trash they really are.
Honestly, when nike puts air into their midsoles, it doesn't really make their shoes more comfortable to me. It makes the bottom of the shoe feel too firm for me. I think collectors of the 4s have said this one is more comfortable to wear and walk around in because the forefoot air unit is replaced with actual foam that would be in a running sneaker. Most people who collect Jordans knew this wasn't going to be a good skate shoe. However, in terms of regular 4s, it is an upgrade.
To be fair, most of the firmness comes from the stiff polyurethane midsole. Ever since Nike/Jordan changed the tooling from open-cell to closed-cell PU construction to prevent early crumbling (EVA/Phylon midsoles doesn't do this though, from the 10s to 14s as the shoe glue will give out first instead), it's been a constant problem over the last couple decades and it all started with the multiple colorways in the early 2000s when they had to "remaster" the 4s. Since then, most signature Nike/Jordan shoes with a polyurethane midsole always feel like bricks. Even my 97s feel stiff too, no thanks to that pu midsole. Though there have been exceptions with the Air Max 1 '86 OG Varsity Red from 2023 being open-celled pu again, and in about a couple weeks as of this comment, the Black Cement 3s. Hopefully this keeps sending the message that we want shoes to be comfortable again and not cater to the stupid "no creasing" crowd, which they're also a part to blame for the stiff midsole trend Nike started paying attention to. Shoes are gonna crease, people, no matter how careful you do it! Wear your kicks, don't display them until after they're past their wear!
The reason Nike has gone after the rep manufacturers so strongly and created such a stigma against wearing 'fakes' is because a $50 pair of reps are the SAME QUALITY as the crap Nike sell for $300+
i had a different experience where i couldn't wear reps. their soles aren't authentic amd i can neither fit a 10.5 or 11. too small, too big. this would be fine for someone who doesn't skate.
That’s a lie. Quality fakes are usually $100 plus. And wearing fakes has more to do with design and integrity. Most people buy fakes because they can’t afford the sneaker or they don’t want to pay resale. And Nike rarely sells any sneakers for over $225. Most of their sneakers are under. $200.
I've bought a lot of reps. They can't compare to retail. Shape is wonky. Construction is shody. Rep makers cut just as many corners as Nike does. Quality reps still cost just as much as retail once shipping is factored in.
Nike's reasoning in taking out the forefoot air unit is for extra room and ground feel for 'skaters'.. now it's proven that it's BS. At least for casual wear that extra space fixed the pinky toe bruising issue and good to hear Nike used a fair amount of good leather. Am sure a lot of 'sneakerheads' are going to watch this and be thankful in seeing the quality of materials used and insides of the SB4's. Top stuff to Rose Anvil in getting a proper skater to rate this sneaker.
To be fair, this is how old-school skate shoes used to be. There was no "board feel" back then, skate shoes were cushioned toasters, hence why the Jordan 4 fit right in at the time. DVS, Globe, Airwalk, Etnies, eS, etc all had their own toasters. The only ones that were doing vulc shoes around that time was Vans, and that was gatekept on the west coast for a long time
I have the SB Jordan 1 Defiant OG LA to Chicago and the leather is way better quality than the regular GR Jordan 1 OG. They’re probably the best quality leather Jordan 1s I’ve had
Would love to see you guys do the Converse "CONS Chuck Taylor All Star Pro." I've skated in them and loved the compromise where they add a lot of cushioning compared to chucks but still have great board feel. And they look classic as can be. Mine were also suede- which as mentioned in this vid feels much more durable than canvas.
I am so appreciative of Your RUclips Channel, and so glad that I saved money by never getting any pairs of Nike Air Jordan 4s nor any Nike SBs of any kind. I am a Sneaker enthusiast with 53 shoes in my current collection including 3 Skateboarding shoes and 41 Nike Sneakers.
I was so interested in this because the sneaker community kept talking about how much more comfortable they were than the OG Jordan 4! Great video, as always!
cut open some Emerica brand shoes with the pour in G6 cup-sole! Like the KSL Spanky G6 shoes. I'm super interested in seeing all the technology compared to other SB shoes.
I want to the new balance 440 reviewed. I just bought a pair because I liked the look of them and now I'm dusting off the old skate board. Also when is rose anvil collaborative skate shoe 😂
This is such an important channel to be subscribed to, for knowledge is power, and I want to know what I am buying, if it's quality or not. It's a disservice to not watch Rose Anvil really. I genuinely trust it and buy shoes based off the recommendations of it.
12:05 - accualy there were a lot of skate shoes in late 90s/early 2000 with all kinds of air units in them (from fr ex. Osiris, Adio, Emerica etc.) and they didn't feel like they had reduced board feel - they were just build with different materials, maby softer foam or gum. I had a bunch of'em while I was a skater and they were all great for skating....
Absolutely want to see a line up with Caulin on the sneakers, Sam on skate shoes and Weston doing boots + a materials/construction segment in all the others 👌
Football (soccer) boots would be interesting. Most companies offer 3 grades of the same boot from reasonably priced to astronomical. Wonder if they are worth the difference?
I’d imagine these would be best suited for street skaters who are launching off of big drops. Much like the old school és and Osiris shoes that were super cushioned and chunky and designed to absorb harsh impacts. You lose board feel and the ability to pull off technical flip tricks but you gain protection
Love the video guys!! The 4 is def hard to skate in but they’re so much more comfortable to wear than regular 4s. The shape upgrade is kinda huge. There actually should be slightly less padding in that midsole for board feel. Granted you have to have a certain amount of foam and rubber surrounding the airbag so it can’t be thinner than that parameter.. whatever that is. That’s why the ishod used a drop in midsole … so they could thin it out for more board feel. The front airbag on the sb 4 was intentionally removed for that reason. Did it achieve more board feel? Maybe? Haha it’s a hard shoe to skate in but some people love that clunky fat shoe. DCs are basically living off their retro puffy shoes right now and some people love skating in that. I could imagine if you’re coming from a Emerica vulc shoe or something like that the 4 would be impossible to skate but… if you’re coming from a dc Lynx… maybe not so bad! 🤷🏻♂️ I think they achieved the best case scenario Jordan 4 sb that works for that customer. One of my homies and Bluetile photographer loves his… although he is normally a dunk guy. Lately he’s been rocking the PS8 which has a lot of tech and is way easier to skate than the 4. Ramble ramble. I love when you guys make videos that cross over with my biz! Haha
most people break their shoes in before expecting the best performance from a shoe, plus it helps to be an okay skater as well, that said no real skater is going to skate expensive ass shoes unless your sponsor gives you some
They put a piece of regular cheap plastic foam in the heel and sell it as a ''super high-tech upgrade'' @6:29 lol, it seems that taking people for idiots is a great business model.
Do Last Resort AB. They’re Pontus Alv (the guy who started Polar)’s shoe brand and they’re really nice. Very grippy and boardfeel focused with very high quality suede for a skate shoe imo. Make sure you get a new pair though because they’ve made upgrades to the insoles. My thoughts know these Nike SBs are that they’re such an acquired taste that it’s kind of impossible to review them as a normal skate shoe. I know people who got a pair of these, got used to skating them and loved them. It’s kind of similar to my experience with SB Dunks, in that at first they feel way too chunky and slippery to be good skate shoes, then you just kind of get used to them, you adjust your skating and before you know it they’re your favourite thing to skate in.
i feel like people who skate shoes with no board feel have to rely on commitment and muscle memory on a familiar board set up. when i skate a new shoe i havent broken in yet i have to tell my self to ignore that fact and skate like their old and that helps me commit but it definitely feels like painting in the dark , i dont know where my feet are without looking and im trusting my body feels right
I had a friend who used to work at a skate shop, and he would full on skate in the rarest SB Dunks without care! He was a hero in my eyes lol. These annoying hypebeasts and sneaker collectors make me 🤮
SB dunks used to just be different from regular dunks because the tongue was fatter, the laces were fatter, and the sockliner had a zoomair unit in the heel. That's it.
The materials are better and the different midsole design is a major improvement. It took a decent shoe for skating and made it into a great one. Its why you see so many real skaters wearing them.
@@sole__doubt My two oldest pairs date back to 2005 & 2008 and I agree, they're just built better than regular Dunks. After a 12yr hiatus I bought a pair of last year's Dictionary of Color release and there are definitely some differences in construction; structurally the uppers feel thicker up and down the sides towards the toe box and the heal has more structured padding to the point where I initially considered going a half size up, however I expected the padded tongue to compress and the suede to give a little over time which it has. The rubber compound used for the outsoles seems denser and less sticky. These newer shoes aren't particularly better or worst - just different.
@@fransaacs Yeah I have several old pairs and still wear them often, they are just solid sneakers. The older ones were certainly made with more premium materials but thats not that big of a deal unless you plan on keeping them for decades which most people do not. I have the D.O.C Mystic Red lows, which are PRM so the materials are better, especially the suede. Yeah they were snug at first but like you said after you break them in they fit perfectly. The rubber on the soles is certainly of a higher durometer and noticeably harder. I get reminded of that when the squeak while walking around.
@@sole__doubt Squeakers rather than sneakers it's true. I picked up the other orange/emerald colorway, however since seeing the mystic red out in the wild I'm tempted to try and find a nearly new pair on sale.
Interested to see how construction in something like NB# Tiago 1010’s compares - In 37 years of skating the 1010’s are easily the best I’ve skated in. I’ve had multiple pairs of everything Chucks, VSW, Airwalk, Cons BBall, Etnies, Simple, DVS, Kastel, Adio, Emerica, Eś, DC, Vans, lots of adidas in the last 10 years, nothing comes close to the nb’s
I’ve been waiting for someone to cut these open because they said they filled the midsole with pylon( the gray foam that’s on dunk forefoot). The Jordan 4 you used to compare is the older styles that isn’t sold anymore and not relevant to consumers. they use the 89’ shape on all the newer 4’s. After this pair. Use a newer pair that has the updated shape and compare. Btw gum rubber isn’t exactly sticker but doesn’t have colorant in the mix and thus makes the materials less adulterated and last longer.
You guys should review Ishod Wairs first and second signature shoe with Nike. I believe he designed them both. They're also vastly different from each other.
I recently bought and lightly skated some jordan 4’s. But not the sb’s mine are the military industrial blue. My understanding is SE are just as good as SB one but don’t have the slim toebox. I love these shoes not because they skate that good but they represent what a good shoe is. I like how they break in around the toebox area and it feels ergonomic. The little foam outsole part that at first bothers your pinky toe gets softer and flexes lol. I love that I can jump down 5feet and land dead without rolling knowing that the insole sucks but at least it has hella compressed air. I thought I was developing a plantar fibroma from wearing cheap skate shoes, so I bought some jordan 4’s tried them out, watched some shoe cutting vids and ultimately decided on the dunk. I wear that to skate daily and never a problem. It still doesn’t have a full length foam in the footbed like the 480 but I like how chunky the outsole is on the forefoot. If my foot lands weird and slips off the board practicing flatground I don’t feel like the edge of the board scraped the sensitive inner edge of my foot. Nike shoes do perform somewhat well, despite seeming cartoonish to some people, and I kinda like how they’re narrower than old school puffy skate shoes, but still have a good amount of protection and beefiness, if that’s what you’re going for. As far as the sb dunk goes, in my tts with the padded tongue my foot is really locked in. And the little bullshit zoom air unit and poron insole work pretty decent. I actually put those insole in some vans and use xtended wear ones in the dunks to skate. Yesterday I skated my sb chron 2’s one of my favorite shoes by nike and they also feel very skatable, for practicing a few manuals and stuff they were fine. The insole was also alot more comfy than I remembered. I tried to flick a heelflip and it didn’t flip and I landed on my heels and I didn’t feel anything. The insole looks kind of crazy actually, since there’s no midsole lol I now consider thin skate shoes more for the under 30 crowd. This is also a great shoe if you getting back onto skating and feel really clumsy despite still having certain tricks. That’s not exclusively what they’re good for, but everyones journey is different. For me they led me to figuring out what my ideal shoe is like by exemplifying those characteristics. I didn’t want to skate the more expensive shoes so I bought cheap slim shoes. But in skateboarding sometimes you need to listen to some advice, you may need protection and have to even pad up. It may not be what you want, but it’s safer than not doing it. I went from a $30 clearance rack shoe to a $140 sb dunk because my feet were in pain! In the end there is no free will.
I’m new to the channel but you guys should cut alternating left and right of same shoes different colour ways and then whatnot auction off mismatched pairs of the same size!
Imagine a Jordan 4 with a brooks, saucony, or new balance running shoe comfort. Retro nike shoes were never for comfort but for looks. But we only imagine😢 the possibilities.
Great video and appreciate the content 🤙. Would love to see a wear test on the PS8’s by Nike SB. Especially it being Sandy Bodecker’s last shoe he help design.
I like the PS8 a they are slightly longer thank the sb dunks but slightly more narrow but u could break in the fly knit a bit pretty good shoe for the 120 imo
Would love to see a series testing skate shoes because I’m a total nerd about skating and shoe tech (I make my own shoes from scratch) and it would be super helpful for us skaters tgo see which ones are worth our money because most skate shoes wear down quick and they’re getting pretty expensive these days. Would also love to see some of the cheaper models to see if they might actually be worth it compared to some pro model Asics new balance Nike or adidas shoes
The two Asics I've had I've blown through far too quick lmao. The PS8s were also a huge let down longevity wise. The lace housing on mine came up. I just did the Adidas Samba X Puig and the lace bed on those came up too, the stitching. I don't shoe goo them for the sake of any reviews so I get a raw test, but with it they for sure will last a lot better. It's just for that price that's all bad. Honestly the New Balance 480's so far have been among the best ive skated at this point without too much hiccups. The price for Asics are inane thought, unless they've gone on sale more now, but the Gel Flexkee and 2.0 ones were insane. Oh and the Tiago 808's are pretty solid too, just zero board feel🫠 Would be nice to see them cut open I don't know about all that or have that knowledge 🤣
6:39 I would argue the insole makes a HUGE difference. Grab a regular nike dunk and throw the nike sb insole in and compare the difference. Its not even close.
mid sole on all sb versions are different to on sb versions. The SB4s dont have the air bag unit in the forefoot area for more boardfeel as an example and sb dunks have way different midsoles compared to normal dunks
Exactly why VANS aren’t the best for everyday walking, but you can feel everything going on under your feet, making your board so predictable. Nike SB is just a marketing tactic
Thank you for the review. Ive been wanting a review of their skateability from an actual skater and not a sneaker collector. Obviously there are tona of skate brands but why not test the new balance skate line? ❤
Sicc video i skated my pair of sb4’s and i gotta say they definitely changed something! I skated normal 4’s too and overall i really like to skate in this shoe the only downside is the bad boardfeel…

Kinda like how basketball players in the 80s hopped in high top and mid tops, but now all you see are low cut basketball shoes thanks to Kobe. Evolution and innovation bro. Don’t be stuck in the past, adapt with the time.
@@avalon5109A lot of this innovation simply exists to get people feeling they need to upgrade their stuff which may or may not be true.
He didn’t mention anything about the back tabs or the wings/netting being totally different from the regular 4s, which does make a complete difference. It was never made to be a skater shoe, but more skater friendly if wanting to skate in 4s.
or the new shape.
this was actually a really bad review in terms of discussing changes and facts about the SB version, it's weird. not up to normal rose anvil standards at all
@@nickkalister6291agreed.
It literally was marketed as a skate shoe and sold as such, not a "skate friendly" shoe.
Most people who collect Jordans don't skate.
💯💯💯
Top stuff to Rose Anvil in getting a proper skater to rate this sneaker.
you should do some skate shoe reviews! Would be interesting to see a very well made shoe, like the etnies marana, or some skate or pro vans! 🙏
To be fair, this is how old-school skate shoes used to be. There was no "board feel" back then, skate shoes were cushioned toasters, hence why the Jordan 4 fit right in at the time. DVS, Globe, Airwalk, Etnies, eS, etc all had their own toasters. The only ones that were doing vulc shoes around that time was Vans, and that was gatekept on the west coast for a long time
Make your way through the skate brands! Lakai, Clearweather, Opus, Fallen, Cons, Es... do them all! Love the show Guys!
Love the skate shoe reviews. More skate vids!
I was so interested in this because the sneaker community kept talking about how much more comfortable they were than the OG Jordan 4! Great video, as always!
A review of the New Balance Numeric 480 skateshoe would be great. And thanks for all the great information you guys deliver.
The 480s are the worst skate shoe I have ever owned.
cut open some Emerica brand shoes with the pour in G6 cup-sole! Like the KSL Spanky G6 shoes. I'm super interested in seeing all the technology compared to other SB shoes.
Visions street wear high tops would be coop to see. Also mad props to get that footage in the rain.
I want to the new balance 440 reviewed. I just bought a pair because I liked the look of them and now I'm dusting off the old skate board.
Also when is rose anvil collaborative skate shoe 😂
You should do the Nyjah 3s! It's the shoe Nyjah Houston used in the olympics. Would be really interesting to see.
This is such an important channel to be subscribed to, for knowledge is power, and I want to know what I am buying, if it's quality or not. It's a disservice to not watch Rose Anvil really. I genuinely trust it and buy shoes based off the recommendations of it.
It would be cool to see an in depth review of the vans skate line, and the difference between the regular vans models!
Please review & cut the ipath cats, best board feel I ever had. Skating in ipath cats is akin to walking in grass barefoot.
Asics skate Shoes! In skating the Japan Pro now, not bad
Would be nice to see your thoughts on Adidas Forum 84 Low ADV and maybe how they compare to SB Nike Dunks
Really thick. Not much boardfeel. Beefier than dunks. Skateable but veery heavy, burly feeling. Rather go Dunks
@@DandyHippo Good to know 👍
Review the Adidas copa premiere skateboarding shoe, I have a pair and love them, I’m curious about the quality of the materials.
Keep bring us these skate shoe reviews, skate shoe have always promised high tech upgrades. Time to put them to the Anvil test 🤙🤙
"Noi one's gonna skate in these." Uh, me lol. I skated my Chunky's, many others have, too.
Haha
Thanks for making this video! I was waiting since you made the first Nike SB Dunk video (or maybe it was since the Jordan 4 video)
Vans were always my preferred skate shoes back in the late 90’s early naughts.
most people break their shoes in before expecting the best performance from a shoe, plus it helps to be an okay skater as well, that said no real skater is going to skate expensive ass shoes unless your sponsor gives you some
It would be cool to skate test different Jordan 1 models.
Cool review, great break down between the SB and regular model.
You think those have poor board feel try to be a skater back in 2005 pal 😂
Them Adios and Osiris’s man sheesh, circas was my jam tho !
They put a piece of regular cheap plastic foam in the heel and sell it as a ''super high-tech upgrade'' @6:29 lol, it seems that taking people for idiots is a great business model.
its technically a zoom air unit, pressurized air with fibers to keep it's shape, but its a tiny heel pad.
U won’t feel the difference in the softer mid and inner sole. U will find after hours of skating u have less leg fatigue.
Pine Greens next to Fire reds look 🔥
hell yeah we want more skate shoe reviews!
lmao "Leather Daddy" should be a title plaque on your office table. instead of boring CEO of Rose Anvil, just make it The Leather Daddy lol
OG Vans and the Janoski’s would be great to see with this skate format.
Great ep! Keep it up!!
This was great! I would love more skate shoes on the channel!
I assume they took the forefoot air out for board feel. Still too thick though. These would be better for basketball than the normal ones I think
Love the skate shoe content!
Hardbody karate. Thank you for this, keep the skate content coming.👏🏼
Excellent breakdown. This vid is gonna get a lot of buzz
i feel like people who skate shoes with no board feel have to rely on commitment and muscle memory on a familiar board set up. when i skate a new shoe i havent broken in yet i have to tell my self to ignore that fact and skate like their old and that helps me commit but it definitely feels like painting in the dark , i dont know where my feet are without looking and im trusting my body feels right
I had a friend who used to work at a skate shop, and he would full on skate in the rarest SB Dunks without care!
You gotta do the Air max 95 / SB colab thats coming out next year, that spawned from a famous photo of Stevie Williams skating in 95's
I would like to see the Busenitz from Adidas in this Skate reviews
The insole looks kind of crazy actually, since there’s no midsole lol
I now consider thin skate shoes more for the under 30 crowd.
The Dreamcell insole padding on 4's is supposed to look textured and feel textured. It definitely doesn't look smooth looking
can you do mountaineering shoes? the kind the accept crampons? the climbing community would watch and be interested
I would love to see you guys check out more skate shoes. Maybe some New Balance Numerics or Adidas Tyshawns or Busenitz next!
Was about to get them, you changed my mind thanks!
You should make comparisons of different iteration of Vans shoes... Vaults/Skate/Classics. Thanks
More Sam the Skater Boi pls!
some good shoes to review that are popular/getting popular with core skaters would be Last Resorts, and any of the Asics skate shoes.
Thank you Rose Anvil for sponsoring Rose Anvil
Chucks, duffs, and dc. I have also skated in docMartins, flip flops, and steel toe combat boots. Bottom line for me is the bottom line. How much $$?
DC is retro-ing their old skate shoes! Please test one of those!
Ayooo, that EZ-7 Clip 👀🔥🔥
Please test some éS Accel OG 🙏 also thank you for suggesting skaters skate in skater owned shoes 🎉
I would love for you guys to test the Nigel Sylvester pair that everyone says is really a SB 😅
12:30 best use of these shoes 👟 to date has been seeing them destroyed 😅
Can you please do a video on FRANK'S BOOTS... 😊
Can you do the review on the asics onizuka tiger 66 mexico?
FIre red 4's felt pretty stiff. I wonder how they compare to the Black Cement/Bread Reimagined ones.
