A few things that didn't work for me... the guy who plays Shang Tsung. This actor is great but all sense of gravitas is thrown out the window because he looks... well he looks ridiculous. The wig looks bad and Cary Tagawa's shoes are pretty hard to fill. I mean there's a reason the man has played Shang Tsung so many times. tbh I feel like if they had kind of taken liberties with Shang Tsung I wouldn't have been mad at that. And there's a lot of hate for Cole Young, which was unwarranted, just because he's a new character? Like, Mortal Kombat adds new characters every game wtf is the big deal lmao. But his character does have problems for sure! As the character that is the "most developed" he's the most boring. He's supposed to represent us, the average viewer entering this world for the first time, and I think Cole doesn't captivate us when there is already someone else the audience relates to more: Kano. Kano's reactions were a fun balance between being a caricature and having nuance. Kano is making fun of everything because, well, the world is kinda over the top and ridiculous. He's not taking it too seriously, neither are we, so he's just more interesting than Cole. Beyond that? I dig Cole I just think he needs more of a personality beyond "I care about my family".
And Cole basically just didn't interact with anyone and felt literally invisible on screen. He was there but added NOTHING which is the main reason why he gets hate. He could be cool later on but he was not only dry and uninteresting, he also just wasn't even needed at all, anyone could've filled his role tbh.
A big problem with Cole to is his “Power”… it’s literally plot armour (take damage but don’t but deliver said damage back in a lethal way) Personally… I don’t know why they didn’t just make him the Johnny of the movie. Have him be just your everyday guy coming in with a bit of a background in MMA, he’s got that cocky personality to him and he’s actually able to crack a few jokes. 1. This would heavily make him a more interesting character for people to focus on vs the plank of wood he is in this movie. 2. It would give Sonya Blade someone to work off of. Being that she’s a competent special forces operator, having her explain the idea of MK to our protagonist but also being able to work off his jokes, flirts and jab would make for them able to hit back and forth verbally and give her more personality outside… I’m a spec ops soldier who is very wooden. 3. It would give Kano someone else to work his acting off of. Being able to trade shots verbally with our protagonist would be both charming, funny and lead to a good pay off - think demolition man where Snipes and Stallone both quipped back and forth at each other during fights or in between which helped build up this idea of a past between them but also allowed for pay offs at the end or later in the movie when certain quips where brought back.
In the games Sonya gets her rings from her high tech gauntlets, Kano has his laser from his metal eye, jax gets the metal arms either just to be stronger (the original games) or because he lost his arms. The whole arcana thing is completely new and honestly I thought I’d hate it but they did it well enough it doesn’t bother me as much as I thought it would.
Think about this, they bring back Kano, they can give him his cyber eye and enhancements as a plot device now. It gives him reason to come back and cements him and Sonya as Archenemies!
I felt the same, at first i was like duh fuh but then i think most of them had a good build up that it paid off. My only nitpick was that I wished Sonya had a moment where she discovered hers.
I don’t like the arcana thing, it takes away from the whole element of its whoever is good to do it raiden will seek out. And turns it into a Fate thing
As a Mk fan, I understand why they did it. In the games, we just accept these characters can do those things, no questions asked. This Arcana thing is for general audiences to understand how these people can do these things. I guess it does its job of explaining without getting in the way, so i'm ok with it
Sonya’s was the only one that didn’t pay off properly. It didn’t make sense for her to have the rings even though as fans we obviously are used to it and know why. Wish it could’ve been her kiss of death and have the rings be her gauntlets instead.
They didn't want Johnny Cage and Kano in the same movie cuz they're both real high-energy characters fully decided to settle for just Kano since cage had a big part in the original movie
actually Jax doesn't lose his arms on the original timeline, the cybernetic arms are an upgrade on top of his arms to fight Outworld's invasion on MK3 and the he sticks with it. Goro only takes Jax's arms on the Scorpion's Revenge movie.
There are really 3 or 4 different timelines or storylines I mean. Even the games have deviated a lot from the original lore which was actually better lore. But I do think this was the best explanation for how Jax lost his arms because it's more grounded and realistic.
You can just tell that the director and the entire crew had love for the games.. They gave the fans what they wanted and deserved. Sure the storyline is pedestrian, but i loved this movie. I'll put it up there with the OG MK movie from 95. Really hope we get a sequel because as you guys know the MK lore is massive.. there is so much potential for an awesome franchise.

The movie was great, But honestly "there is something wrong with this movie"the first 7 minutes is literally the best 7min in the film, but after it all change like WB low budget film,"WB making WB things"
The movie is going to be a hit with a projected $25-29 million opening. Which is the 2nd highest opening for a pandemic release after Godzilla vs Kong. On just a $50 million budget.
@Bacon ok u said something about the timeline right so why In the movie they show u about Kotal Kahn he is in that same timeline as takeda mk 10 and a lot Also certain characters in the movie didn’t come in mk 3 they came later
Exactly, this film is basically an origin story, some ppl when they watched this were so confused about certain things, I picked up that it was a kinda origin story from the start, certain things, well most of them, made me realise it was that
Most of my issues with this film emerge from my nostalgia for the original. If I blank my mind of the past then there is a lot of this that I can enjoy. Really hope to see it get to a tournament arc though.
Honestly I thought this was pretty good, I'd even say amazing in comparison to what I expected, but I definitely hope the potential sequel gets a better budget. Literally every "bad thing" about this movie can be solved by increasing the budget and using that to get some more solid martial arts actors and better dialogue writers.
Not a martial arts movie suggestion, but rather a television series; "Warrior" (Joe Taslim co-stars and the fight scenes are some of the best for a TV series I have ever seen).
@@Lost.in.Missouri Yeah I was bummed when I found out it got canceled due to Cinemax deciding to cease making all their original programs but then I heard the fan petition reached the point that HBO picked it up. Hopefully that will mean a bigger budget too. I can't wait til season 3!
Chris, Mortal Kombat is nearly 30 years old. Released in 92. Also, most melee weapons from back in the day was farm equipment. The sai came from a tool used to planting seeds. Shuriken came from washers used to fasten house/barn beams. Nunchuks came from a flail used to separate rice seeds from the husks. A sycthe was literally a lawn mower.
In the sequel, we need fight scenes as brutal as RAID or John Wick. Oh . . and of course, more characters. I expect Johnny Cage of course, since they teased it in the last scene.
I like the idea of arcana, mainly because it doesn't effect the plot too much and it explains why people like Sonya can use their abilities in-game with skins that don't have her gauntlets lol
Glad to see you guys enjoyed the movie for what it was. I thought it was a good time and had all the ridiculousness from the games which was fun. That was all I wanted from it. I hope it can make enough to get a sequel.
This is a definite purchase when it's release on DVD & Bluray for me. I've never been a fan of wirework battles as they always look too floaty and superfluous and I'd rather see full screen battle choreography instead of severely edited fight scenes but when someone makes a movie basted on a well-loved and popular subject, getting everything correct about that subject and delivering to its audience is number one and this movie seems to have that in spades (no pun intended given the opening scene). I'll have to watch the original Mortal Kombat movie again see how the two stack up but going from memory, I much prefer what this current movie is doing.
It was actually $50-55 million for the movie (the budget info's been updated online). With that said I'm surprised at the detail of Goro and Reptile's look + physics. But yeah they should've made Raiden's eyes full white like the games, would've looked better.
Joe Taslim is also in Warrior, an HBO show that makes place in the mids 1800s san Francisco about Asian immigrants being in warring gangs, and the politics around the Irish workers, corrupt politicians, and police. I HIGHLY recommend it if you haven't seen it yet
This movie hits me close to home because it was filmed in my old hometown in the sticks as well as some other places around the city/in the bush in my state in Australia. It's crazy how many films have/are being filmed in South Australia because we feel so disconnected from the rest of the world. The new Thor movie is also being filmed in Australia and we've got some big actors like Idris Elba, Zac Efron etc living here as well. Partly due to the pandemic these films have had to be filmed in Australia because we've handled it pretty well but I hope in the future more films are shot in my country.
I honestly believe this was a great (not perfect) but great start to a franchise. Considering the director was inexperienced and most of the actors were up in comers. I think this will be great to see unfold
It had a lot of good stuff, but that makes the bad stuff stand out more. There was a lot of wasted potential. Hopefully they can listen to feedback and fix the issues for the sequel.

Mileena's my girl, and i gotta feel like this was just introductory for her. There's always a way she comes back, and once they introduce Kitana and Shao Kahn, they can't afford to have her as a one off. Plus, she's got a huge enough fan base that'll be crazy pissed if she doesn't come back lol
My guy truer words have never been said. She was Thiccccccc!!!!
@@tekunin5407 you are not wrong, I remember the vitriol during MK11's DLC releases.
@@Prime209z Yep, and that was a damn good Mileena to my eyes, the ferocity was on full display.
Mortal Kombat
1. Do you come here for the plot and/dialog? - no
2. Do you come here for the fighting? - yes
3. Do you come here for the fatalities that caused the video game rating system to be a thing? - YES
4. Were they faithful to the characters and the source material - for the most part YES!
5. Did you see the easter eggs we threw in: Yes - im still cracking up over the leg sweep spamming.
6. Were you entertained? - YES
I call that: Flawless Victory in my book.
I get why they made up Cole. He is the every man. He represents the audience as Johnny Cage kind of was in the early games. People say ‘why not have him be Johnny Cage?’ And I say that would be a disservice to Johnny
I think they also said that having two wisecracking snarkers would be too much(Kano and JC). But he'll be in the next one and I'm all for that.
Actually what i like the most about mortal kombat is the lore but yes thoa other things are.cool too
I know they haven't cast Johnny Cage in a hypothetical sequel, but I saw The Miz posting about how he wanted to play the role and now I can't imagine anybody else playing him.
I mean a Hollywood star + Fighter, Miz is the perfect fit.
The Miz would be a terrible Johnny Cage. He can't act!
Imagine Chris Evans
Jensen Ackles is perfect for Johnny Cage.
@@SeaNAgyEmanG
Yeah, he could do it too.

"You're a coward sorcerer" I laughed so hard, that was spot on. 😂😎
to answer the question, yes, this is a prequel / prologue. Sub- Zero's actor Joe Taslim signed up for FOUR sequels of Mortal Kombat. Next movie is clearly gonna be the start of the tournament

Bi Han does become Noob Saibot but he doesn't rip of Jax's arms, Ermac is the one who rips his arms off

Bi Han/Noob is the older brother of kuai Liang. Not the other way around

Great video guys, I watched this without much knowledge of the history and lore of MK and had fun but it was cool seeing you guys pick up on all the easter eggs and nods to the previous iterations.
Y'all need to react to Cinemax's/HBO Max's Warrior! It's based on Bruce Lee's writings, and it has the best choreography ever put on TV, while the acting, writing and score is all impeccable too! You'll love it, and Joe Taslim/Sub-Zero is in it.
This movie was so unexpectedly great! Your guys' old Mortal Kombat movie reaction is what got me to watch this one, lol I was so pleasantly surprised
They name dropped the “reptile” as another character but I believe it’s just the name of the race reptile is
that's actually Reptile's real name
ya syzoth is reptiles literal name
No that’s his name lol
@To Release is To Resolve no the realm he comes from is zatara and all of their people are called reptile however only the king uses that name like the black panther title for wakonda king syzoth is that reptiles name when they have another king he will go be reptile and will have another actual name that isnt syzoth
Got it, now I know Reptile is a title rather than the name
"They're so faithful to the characters. I love it."
*Reiko enters the chat*
14:16 That is a perfect Christopher Lambert impression
I love all the game references. Especially the spamming leg sweep.
The millions of cuts during fights killed it so much for me. When Liu Kang does the bicycle on Kabal there is 15 cuts in the span of 14 seconds
26:57 HUGE MOOD 😂😂
I'm glad i wasn't the only one😅
The movie was great, But honestly "there is something wrong with this movie"the first 7 minutes is literally the best 7min in the film, but after it all change like WB low budget film,"WB making WB things"
No not really but okay
26:53 me and the boys when our favorite song is playing on the radio
The movie is going to be a hit with a projected $25-29 million opening. Which is the 2nd highest opening for a pandemic release after Godzilla vs Kong. On just a $50 million budget.
I really hope so
Wow on a $50m budget that's amazing.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL!
Any mk 10 fans cole is takeda think about it 💯💯💯
I swear I screamed ohhhhhh shit when I figured that out ....💯💯💯#MKU
I really hope they would take that twist!! 😩
@Bacon ok u give me your theory how familiar are u with the video games just really think about it it could be their on spin on it
@Bacon ok u said something about the timeline right so why In the movie they show u about Kotal Kahn he is in that same timeline as takeda mk 10 and a lot Also certain characters in the movie didn’t come in mk 3 they came later
@Bacon yes he wasn’t physically in the movie but if u really look at the mural in the background where they are training they show a Easter egg
Exactly, wish other people saw it like that
I see wat ur saying
My issues are from the entire set of games that are out. Nothing to do with a old movie.
same
and if it was a tournament, it might have been too similar anyway to the original
Feels like everyone had the same reaction to Liu Kang.
When he appears: looks good, but seems kinda small.
Takes off shirt and flexes: oh my god
Honestly I thought this was pretty good, I'd even say amazing in comparison to what I expected, but I definitely hope the potential sequel gets a better budget. Literally every "bad thing" about this movie can be solved by increasing the budget and using that to get some more solid martial arts actors and better dialogue writers.
the actors were fine, the editing team and writing team was atrocious and needs to be fired though
"Literally every "bad thing" about this movie can be solved by increasing the budget" yeah if it was only that simple...
@@brifo3394 most certainly. Needs more one shots, better dialogue, and for God's sake make sure they keep casting actors with martial arts experience.
Idk, doesn't take much money to produce a quality screenplay.
Mark 20:23. The winged woman! Okay, thanks for that! I could not tell what was happening in the video from, "Blind Wave". 👍
Not a martial arts movie suggestion, but rather a television series; "Warrior" (Joe Taslim co-stars and the fight scenes are some of the best for a TV series I have ever seen).
Warrior is amazing! I’m glad it just got renewed for a third season.
Imagine if only Gareth Evans (The Raid 1&2) directed the action in the Mortal Kombat sequel.
You guys must watch The Raid movie.
Damn right.
yeah my expectations for the fights were too high, a little more cuts than i like but it was solid
We should sign a petition
His fight scenes in gangs of london are raw too
The dance at the end.... lol
In the sequel, we need fight scenes as brutal as RAID or John Wick. Oh . . and of course, more characters. I expect Johnny Cage of course, since they teased it in the last scene.
If they could get stunt coordinators to choreograph the fights like that, it'd be perfection.
I like the idea of arcana, mainly because it doesn't effect the plot too much and it explains why people like Sonya can use their abilities in-game with skins that don't have her gauntlets lol
the Raid is cool and all...
but Joe Taslim stars in The Night Comes For Us.... And that shit is WILD
I think that was the first Indonesian Netflix Original. Honestly, those guys could develop the Indonesian scene to be the next generation HK Cinema.
@@zuriyel5368 it's already heading that way
I'm just glad that my man Kabal got some shine in the film and he definitely deserves to be in the next one. Love playing with him in MK11
Movie was awesome!! There were also able to mix in some great world building and foreshadowing as well.
Glad to see you guys enjoyed the movie for what it was. I thought it was a good time and had all the ridiculousness from the games which was fun. That was all I wanted from it. I hope it can make enough to get a sequel.
I enjoyed it for an introduction, I actually wanna see the second movie now
Facts
Joe taslim (sub-zero) also stars in a FANTASTIC martial arts show on Cinemax called Warrior that you guys should 100% react to.
This movie was fun, that's all I ask. Hope for a sequel
"Is raiden on the toilet right now". 😂😂😂😂
I’m torn between Kano vs Kung Lao for best fatalities. I love them both so much.
Also what was that dance on the couch at the end? 😂😂😂
I'm a big Kung Lao fan and I loved that fatality, but they're both so good! These two were great additions to the movie.
95 million dollars afforded them those after effects for Raiden's eyes? 🤣🤣🤣
It was actually $50-55 million for the movie (the budget info's been updated online). With that said I'm surprised at the detail of Goro and Reptile's look + physics. But yeah they should've made Raiden's eyes full white like the games, would've looked better.
Eddie Tobias is the combination of both the MK creators, Ed Boon aka Scorpion when saying "Get over here" and John Tobias

In ld 240p no thanks , on 4k yes
Joe Taslim is also in Warrior, an HBO show that makes place in the mids 1800s san Francisco about Asian immigrants being in warring gangs, and the politics around the Irish workers, corrupt politicians, and police. I HIGHLY recommend it if you haven't seen it yet
Y’all should check out Warrior on HBO Max, it’s a Bruce Lee inspired martial arts show that has Joe Taslim in it!
And it takes place in my hometown San Francisco California
Mortal Kombat is a franchise that doesn't really need a movie release because the games have come so far with respect to being able to tell a story.
I LOVE THE NORMIES!!! 👑
Me too
This movie hits me close to home because it was filmed in my old hometown in the sticks as well as some other places around the city/in the bush in my state in Australia.
I know Micheal Bay had something to do with Jax’s Arm Transformation Scene 😂😂💯
GET OVER HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kano carried the whole movie
Kabal was also great
I honestly believe this was a great (not perfect) but great start to a franchise. Considering the director was inexperienced and most of the actors were up in comers. I think this will be great to see unfold
Cole will become the new scorpion !
12:25 Saammmme i thought i was the only one who sensed a sexual chemistry between Kano and Sonya lmaooo
