Swimming With Red Chinook Salmon

- In this episode I swim with lots of beautiful chinook salmon in the Chilliwack River. These are the summer reds. There was a big run of them again this year and it's very nice to see them in such numbers. In the past there have been as few as 1000 fish in this entire run, but this year about 2000 made it back to the hatchery and anecdotal evidence would suggest that at least another 1000 were harvested by anglers. Those marine closures sure make a difference.

Oregon steelhead and salmon fisherman here. I really enjoy your videos especially filming fish in their natural environment. Your “clean up videos” are awesome also seeing all of the gear you recover. While high water events happen every year on the streams I fish, they have never experienced the drastic flooding that happened last fall in your area. The damage that was done is sad, but nature seems to have a way of recovering. Hopefully the fish stocks that were affected recover and you continue to have fishing success. Tight lines.
Thanks for following the channel. I really appreciate it. Lucky for us the hatchery was not affected, so our harvest opportunities should not decrease, but wild stocks from that cycle will take a while to recover. Pink salmon in particular were hard hit because they mostly spawn in the main stem, where coho use the side channels quite a bit.
I live in an old millhouse right on a big creek in Pennsylvania.
I can attest to the fact that young or fry stand nearly 100% no chance at record flooding. From the years of diving my "pool" outback and observing.
Average to mature fish are nearly 100% prone to record flooding. They somewhat get moved but likely not far at all.
Thanks for taking the time to share this dive, I too love diving the rivers! Love learning how species hold.
Thanks for the input. We have 5 species of salmon in our river, many spend a year of their life as smolts in the river. Floods affect fish spawning in the river, their eggs, and the young smolts living in the river. We will see in 3 and 4 years how bad it was.
Very nice video. Thanks a lot for showing these videos so we can appreciate these beautiful chinook salmon in this section of the river. I really appreciate your effort and time on this. Cheers
I really appreciate this comment. Without people watching and liking the content, I would probably have stopped posting videos a long time ago.
Nice vid Pete! Glad to see river coming back after the flood. Lived there years ago..great memories of fishing, hiking Cilliwack Vedder and the mighty Fraser up into the canyon.
Thanks for watching. I like that the river is always changing, but the floods re-arranged the whole thing in a big way. Great part of the world for sure, I've lived all over and this is nice for sure even if a bit busy.
Beautiful footage Petr. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for the comment, much appreciated.
Beautiful video. You have me pumped up for my trip the end of September to the Rogue River Oregon. Thanks for sharing
Salmon fishing connects with a lot of people on a very deep level. I hope your trip turns out great and thanks for watching.
Another excellent video. Enjoy the commentary explaining what is going on and the river gets a clean up. Thumps up for sure
Awesome, thank you!
loved the video! I'm from Pennsylvania but traveled to Vancouver for years - stayed at the Great Western and fished the Vedder and Frazer many times - wonderful memories!! IMO This video is an excellent illustration of fish holding water. Great job!
I'm glad this brought back some good memories for you. Thank you for leaving a comment.
I really enjoyed this. You are very informative and the video is awesome!
Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it.
Thanks for the footage, and thanks for the clean-out! Good on ya!
I appreciate the comment. I'm always happy to clean up, especially when it reduces my tackle bill.
What a unique view of a cold river! Thank you for your peaceful commentatay as well.
Thank you for the great comment, much appreciated.
Super cool footage! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the comment.
Nice! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video! Cool to watch a mix of fish in there ! I saw some spring zipping through vdder canal yesterday - was fun to watch how they hold for a while and just zip through. Water is indeed very clear
I wonder if those are the first of the whites you saw, or the last of the reds. I haven't seen any springs in the lower for a while now.
@@petrhermanadventures9509 i saw them from right above the keith wilson bridge, looked like first white springs to me but not really sure, they didnt have any red tint though, was there for about 10-15 mins and saw three springs in total, each after the other and holding in somewhat shallow water for sometime
Always entertaining Peter ! 👏👏👏
Thanks for the comment, much appreciated.
Brilliant! Loved the observation about the boulders.
Glad you liked it, I liked your last couple of videos from Porteau cove as well. I always thought that the fish would be tucked right behind the boulder, but it's more sophisticated. They stick their head out into the moving water and leave their body in the vortex. This way they hardly have to breathe or swim, just a lot of attitude adjustments.
@@petrhermanadventures9509 Thanks. That's quite interesting and insightful.
I really enjoyed this video , fascinating and well explained . I learned more about fishing . Great video , nice cool water .
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks so much for leaving a comment.
Thanks for the net job on the chum today!
Any time. Always an adventure out on the river :)
I lived here for over a decade, watched all the favorite sites here throughout the year, and on the Fraser and beyond. Good times.
Yes, it's a beautiful place, especially in the context of being the outskirts of a metropolitan area.
Great video Peter keep the great work up
Thanks, will do!
woah, the amount of line n lead, plastic!, Cool to watch the under water footage. I live n fish in the top of the south island NZ, thanks for your effort, ill be checking out your other stuff and subing
Welcome aboard. I still find it quite amazing that people all over the world are checking out my content. RUclips gives me a break down of countries of origin and it's neat to see views from places like Pakistan and N.Z. etc.
Spectacular footage.
Thanks for the comment, much appreciated. Maybe I'll add underwater metal detecting to my list of hobbies sometime. Could be quite challenging on breath hold though.
lots of wind or not, still amazing drone footage, thanks for sharing, beautiful
Thanks. Drone footage is one of the things I always liked about RUclips and I just knew I had to have it for my videos as well. TheMalibuArtist is one of my favourite drone videographers, he does great whites in california.
Wow! that was a really cool and interesting video, Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks so much for leaving a comment.
Thanks for the nice video. Didn't know this year's run is that good. Curious what you do with all the bounties of lures and lead you salvage from the river? Thanks for cleaning up the mess especially all the lead in the river.
I'm glad you like the video. I usually have a river side sale a couple of times a year in the fall season and also some giveaways now and then. I often carry a few things in my pocket to give to viewers when I'm fishing. The channel income does not pay for all the gear I use, so it's good to supplement the hobby with some gear sales now and then.
Lol the beads awesome video petr
Yup, lots of bouncy balls, thanks for watching.
The red springs are native to the chwk . Vedder river. The white springs were introduced to the hatchery from another system
No, this is not correct. The summer reds are also a transplant species (upper Fraser). You can verify this with a number of sources like the staff at the hatchery.
Beautiful video!
Thank you very much!
man that water must be cold lol but if i lived up north i would get a suite like you have and dive it... here in florida i live near rainbow river year round temp is 72 degrees Fahrenheit and the head springs has like 200 feet of under water visibility
I've seen some of the videos from the springs, looks dreamy.
We Just moved up to the interior this spring from the chilliwack river valley. Now I wish I was back there, I’ve never seen so many red chinooks!
It was a very strong run this year, the best I've seen in 8 years on the river. Even I managed to catch a couple. There have been extensive marine fishing closures and it sure makes a big difference to our returns. Many recreational anglers claim that rod and reel can never take enough to harm the stocks, but these returns prove otherwise. A few hundred boats taking 4 or 5 fish a day year round adds up to a lot of fish.
Nice footage, God bless!
Thank you very much for leaving a nice comment, I really appreciate it.
Great video, love that you clean up the river of trash too, especially stuff you can reuse.
Thanks for watching. Yes, the clean ups help the river and my pocket book. Last year I raised $500 selling the gear I salvaged, which allowed me to buy the drone I use in the videos.
@@petrhermanadventures9509 That's dope! I never even though about reselling found gear. Totally stealing that idea. I'm thinking about moving to BC this winter, but I'll be pretty far north of ya so I won't be stealing your loot :p
I get maybe 30% of retail price for gently used tackle. It's not much, but sometimes I come back with 20 or 30 lures and it adds up. Kind of a cool combination of adventure and treasure hunting. Good luck and be careful, you don't want to end up attached to the bottom with a barbed hook.
Great vid
Thank you, glad you liked it.
Always enjoy your videos…just out of curiosity, what did you mean when you said it’d be too dangerous to clear away the fishing line because the current was too fast?🤔
Glad you enjoyed. That was heavy braid, and there was a reasonably good chance of cutting my hand even through the glove if I yanked on it. If I get tangled in slow water I just cut myself free, in fast water it becomes a problem fast.
I work with CDFW monitoring Chinook at the bottom end of their inland range. Its great to see these populations wish we had the numbers in CenCal
I think your conservation efforts down there are important to us up here too. As out glaciers retreat and the waters warm, it will be the southern salmon populations that will be needed up here for their warm water adaptations.

Wow absolutely stunning. Love to get in with the fish
Thanks, yes it's an amazing experience for sure.
I checked out your channel. I have been making my own sushi for about the last 20 years, great way to eat many species.
beautiful footage
Glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful! Always wanted to see Salmon from below the surface. Great footage.. you are under-subscribed!( but I am one too now).
Welcome aboard and thank you for the comment.
I wonder if you could describe the differences that you know about coho, steelhead and chinook smolts? I am a fellow river snorkeler and am curious to know what I am seeing. Thank you for your videos! Always interesting!
Would take a few paragraphs to describe. A quick search on google should result in some image comparisons for you. Even I'm not always sure as there are variations from river to river too. Thanks for watching!
Great video/ community service! Have you thought about doing something like this for Ambleside beach/ mouth of the capilano River? With a metal detector can fish out at least my 6 jigs/lures haha
I went to high school in North Van, love the area. Unfortunately it's a bit far for me from Chilliwack.
That loaded with fish it be nice to know you had that amount of fish lying in pool before you start fishing.
This particular spot is off limits to fishing, but there are other places that can be just as loaded.
nice!
Thanks for the comment, I have watched your channel many times over the years, very cool to have you see one of mine.
I have always wanted to do that, thanks
You should! Just be careful please and start in slow water, I have many years of whitewater experience
Mind giving a brief of the gear you used for this? I would like to start body wading in my local pnw rivers to pickup trash. Snorkel recommendations or dry suit?
I heard your bit on short fins and will go that route as well for ease of maneuverability. Most rivers I will hit are sub 500cfs.
I would advise starting in water that is slow enough that you can swim against the current. Once it gets too fast, it's a very hazardous environment. I have over 30 years of white water experience of various sorts and I don't want anyone getting hurt after watching me. For gear I use a 5mm open cell free diving suit, weight belt, mask and snorkel. Fins as mentioned with booties, so I can take the fins off and "portaqe" the fast water sections. Also I never tie anything to my body. All the gear is only tied to my quick release weight belt. It's a great way to clean up the rivers and get lots of free gear. Good luck and thanks for watching.
@@petrhermanadventures9509 Thank you for what you’re doing for generations ahead. I will definitely start in a semi-controlled environment, made a living from the river for a couple years as a fishing guide. Nothing too big but I have some foundation of reading water before it’s on you. Thank you for sharing some of your wisdom.
Thanks. I love to do this too.
Hey, that's great. I know there are kindred spirits out there, but I rarely meet them.
@@petrhermanadventures9509 I've fished/fly-fished all over the country but discovered as a teenager how much fun it was to go diving in lakes and streams with all the fish. Have seen some suprisingly big fish this way that otherwise I wouldn't have known were there. A comment on my fishing?! Haha. Thanks again. Your video was a treat. Especially with the multiple species in the flow.
Truly incredible
I'm glad you think so, it is a pretty cool place to see.

Awesome footage great stuff Thank you for sharing 👍 🇺🇸🗽🇺🇸🎏 The Vermonter Catch and Release only! Have gun will travel and fly Rod in hand!!
thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching. Good luck bringing a gun to Canada, our government is hell bent on taking them all away.
jealous already hahah i promise you in my life i will never set foot there prepared to catch them all
It was a strong run this year, but I only managed to catch 2.
Great footage! It's my understanding that you cannot use drones to locate fish for the purpose of catching them in the State of Oregon. Thanks!
I'm up in Canada, so I'm not familiar at all with Oregon laws.
@@petrhermanadventures9509 It's in the Fish & Wildlife guide for fishermen. It also applies to hunting. That's not to say that drones don't get used for both. We have our share of 'snaggers' and 'road hunters', also illegal. This is a salmon/steelhead fishery where meat fishing is practiced heavily 😒and returns have been weak.
There’s some holes that look like this on my local rivers in Washington just loaded with steelhead and chinook but they don’t like to bite with this low water
I wish it got that loaded with steelhead, would be awesome to see. Our winter ghosts are quite secretive.
@@petrhermanadventures9509 yeah the winter fish around us don’t stack as hard I have found huge schools of springs and summer run steelhead just hovering in a 20ft deep hole at maybe 5 feet deep and they will only bite once if your lucky then they get spooked for days
Poor coho. I don’t think many have forgotten hearing about the floods last year.
Yup 2025 is gonna be a questionable year for coho and chum
I think the run most heavily impacted will be the Pink Salmon, as they spawn in the main stream of the river and are not hatchery enhanced. Fortunately the hatchery portion of the run will not be impacted, so we should still have some good fishing opportunities.
Red chinook? There are more than one species of king salmon?
They are all one species, but there are many different morphologies that are adapted to specific runs. The Kings down in Oregon are quite different from the ones we have up in B.C., they are for example better adapted to lower oxygen and warmer water. They could all interbreed, so still one species though. I just filmed another video that has red and white chinooks and you can see the difference. Will be posted in a few days.
they stack up like this in the sacramento river during spawn and i still haven't successfully flossed a single one. hoping i get my first salmon ever this October.
Salmon can be a tough nut to crack, but once you do a great deal of fun. They do bite reliably, but usually only early in the morning.
HI Petr; is it still worthwhile trying to drive to the vedder (2hrs for me) for red spring fishing? If so mid section or upper or? thank you man. love the vids.
Hey, sorry I was on vacation up north for the last 10 days, or I would have replied sooner. Even at the time you wrote 95% were beyond the point where they are nice to eat, but they are in there for catch and release till the end of august. Some people still eat then of course, but the meat is soft.
Nice
Thanks for commenting, really helps the channel out and I appreciate it.
Wow so much salmons, freaking awesome. Is this a nature reserve? Everything still seems to be in order there.
In my childhood in the 80s, our German creeks were filled to the brim with brown trouts. Under some stone cracks you could catch them blindly by hand, edible portion trout. We have still photos, there the whole river is black, because hundreds of brown trouts darken the water. Today you can be glad, that you see a fish at all.
By releasing the three North American crayfish species, we have eliminated our native crayfish population in a few years to over 90%, that was sometime in the 1950s. The invasive species have spread the crayfish plague. In 2022, there are early reports that the very small crayfish population is slowly recovering. This has also harmed the fish and other invasive species.
In addition, the invasive non-local rainbow trout is chasing away the local brown trout. Brown trout look for a territory when they are old, which they only leave & return for spawning. Agricultural and industrial poisons give the fish the rest. We humans are the real monster.😔🤯😵💫
Danke fur den besuch. This spot is actually on one of the most heavily fished rivers in Canada, but in a no fishing area. I hear some European salmon runs are making a return. Too bad about the trouble with the invasive species. Here we have a problem with Smallmouth Bass that someone introduced illegally a few years ago.
in the usa it’s quite opposite. the brown trout take over all the native brook trout streams and same with some wild rainbow trout streams.
Is the water cold?
It's mid summer for us, so no not very cold. I could probably do it without a wetsuit, but because I like to swim around for a couple of hours, I wear one anyway.
Whats the drone model?
DJI Mavic Mini 2
cool
Thanks
Where is this

You pulled a lot of fishing trash out! Thanks! I fish myself, but spearfish more often. Not a fan of all the snagged line and lures that get left behind as a byproduct of rod and reel fishing.
I spent a winter in Mexico a while back and spear fished every day for months. It's awesome, but unfortunately I live too far from the ocean now.
@@petrhermanadventures9509 Mexico (BCS) is my favorite place to spearfish!
Excellent point about NOT walking into the run when fishing. Pisses me off when I see that.. Then again we know it's the flossers/snaggers that do/initiate this. As soon as 1 of them walks in, you don't have a choice but to do the same if you wanna fish the run unless you're under them... Yeah flossers don't care if the fish are spooked. Noone who is bait fishing would in their right mind walk into the run and spook the fish to gain 10 ft of casting distance. Very few instances when this is warranted.. Like if the water is real murky, after you have extensively fished the short drift or if there's a super long super shallow stretch... For the most part, the idiocity won't stop tho 🙄
I try to throw in a a little bit of education to try and curb the "idiocy". If even a few people listen, it's worth it.
Nobody is bait fishing for sockeye in freshwater dude... Please learn then speak
@@robbarber7253 lol Rob.. Just take your own advice. Nobody is talking about targeting Sockeye in the Vedder..We frown upon that since the run is protected and retention is never allowed.
@@petrhermanadventures9509 agreed 👍
Hi Petr. Thanks for the video,.very well made! I am new to Chilliwack can you recommend me where to go fishing for rainbow and brown trout? Is there any common carp around? Would be very much appreciated. God bless.
Welcome to the Wack. No brown trout in the area. We have rainbows, steelhead, and cutthroat. No retention of any wild trout from streams in our region, so that pretty much leaves small hatchery trout in the Vedder river or the stocked trout in many local lakes. All the small lakes around Harrison Hot springs are stocked and produce trout. We have carp in the Sumas, google Macdonald Park.
Why don't you Google it?

yeah right, we're here to steal the good fishing spots from all the old timers.
LOL, I'm well aware. That's why I usually delay my videos by a few weeks or am intentionally vague about exact location. While I believe that social media is a benefit to fishing overall, it can be devastating to particular fishing spots.
Now peterrrrr, leave the fish alone and let them do their thing. They have put alot of effort in making it this far.
pls believe me that I treat these fish with a great deal of respect. They are not spawning there, just holding and waiting for their bodies to complete the spawning preparations.

Not allowed, besides, it would hardly be fair chase. I do love my spear fishing.
