Well i purchased this grill for my family , from what i can tell from seeing them using the grill, the lower vents help with the way the coals burn and the upper vents are for the amount of heat when the top of the grill is closed and with what is cooking, hope this helps you out.
You don't need a chimney starter, raise the tray and apply paper or cardboard and light. Saves you hella money

Hello how to you remove the charcoal afterwards?
The aluminum tray that you see at the bottom with a handle on it is where you remove the charcoal, It just pulls out.

I had to put mine together, the diagrams aren't great but for the most part it wasn't too difficult.
