Thank you Katie for saying the obvious out loud!
It is the Tax Payer’s who pick up the bill for such excursions by the$e Billionaire’s who signed a waiver and understood the risks!
I believe we know the outcome and it’s bleak!
RIP
Millions and millions of dollars spent to find (not rescue) these poor people. No one would put a cost on the possibility of saving them, no matter how remote. Yet those millions could feed, house, provide college educations, etc. etc. "Regular" human problems are highly scrutinized as to whether they should be funded, whereas five risk takers are funded without hesitation. Sigh.
Space Rescue is next , NASA we need a rocket to rescue some crazy billionaires .
Give away ur own money then?
Well said. I agree.
Same sentiment as “whitey on the moon”. Yeah let’s feed the poor billions of the global south so they can become trillions and consume what’s left of this godforsaken rock.
Yeah bc billionaires are worth more than us normal folks. Smh
Hi Katie! I'm just a lowly business analyst however when I heard about this it was the most stupid thing I ever heard of in my life. The arrogance is astounding! It's almost like a really bad joke you know isn't going to end well. The lack of risk management and safety plan B plan C or something is appalling! If I was the mother of any one of them adult or not, I would have forbidden it. It makes me so mad!!
I understand that the mother of the Pakistani and son was on the ship above as one of the pilots.
I agree. I would not have allowed my son to go. He would had to fight me to board.
1. You are not a lowly anything!!! You are Devine perfection!!!
2. Did you hear the interview of the Aunt indicating the 19 year old was terrified and did not want to go? He went to please his father in an effort to bond with him for Father’s Day. It’s TRAGIC!!! 💔💔💔💔💔
@@Nurturing2 Thank you! I saw that last night! Folks need to trust their intuition. I would have taken one look at that washing machine and said No freaking way,! You ain't going!
I work in aviation maintenance and the fuselage of an aircraft has a life limit, ultimately due to the amount of cycles the tube goes through expansion and contraction. On that note, prior to the end of life, there are scheduled inspections with eddy current to check for cracks or weak points. If there is no analysis program or maintenance manual for these submersibles, this should be a new law.
plus, older airframes used for cargo rather than pax, arguably an extra safety margin.
yes! that’s the first thing I thought too! don’t tell me how many dozen times you’ve gone to the titanic if those are all with the same hull 😮
Unfortunately these dives take place in international waters and are, to all intents and purposes, not under the jurisdiction of any country. Which won't stop somebody trying to sue them in a US court for damages etc.
Greetings from Italy. 🇮🇹 Thank you Katie for bringing up the ethical conflict regarding the reactions to migrants dying at sea while risking it all for a chance at a better life vs. adventure seekers lost on an expensive voluntary trip - while we’re continually told there’s little money for saving migrant lives in the Mediterranean where thousands die each year vs. the interest in and high costs of the rescue efforts of this one submergible. Horrible to contemplate the loss of life at sea for anyone, rich or poor…but the different levels of interest, empathy, and resources are particularly striking this week. PS - Days of mourning, flags at half staff, etc. to honor the dead after yet another shipwreck is pretty much Europe’s version of the US’s “thoughts and prayers” after yet another mass shooting. In both cases, what we really need is effective, humane, and ethical policies. ☮️
Thank you for this. So true!
Well said
I agree with you wholeheartedly, with all the poverty and all over the world, and homelessness, this is how the rich spend their money! Yet, this is a horrible way to die and I wish it on no one.
Well said
Hey dumdum. Don’t say “this crushes me”.
You couldn't pay me 10 MILLION Dollars to get into that Death Tube!! NO WAY!!!
Thank you, Katie and David Pogue. As usual to Katie's coverage, a variety of angles and perspectives. Each handled with journalistic grace and integrity.
Hi Katie, thanks for having David to help explain more details on what he knows about this situation. It sounds so very grim right now. I just cannot imagine what the outcome is going to be unless there is an ultimate miracle at this point. I cannot imagine taking this type of risk whether I could afford it or not. This is very terribly tragic and sad for the five souls aboard and their families. 😢
I second that motion, thank you Katie, for giving us clear understanding of what is going on in the World around us.
Such hig h risk I hope this means young people cannot in future participate.....

Great interview! I was very glad to hear that virtually no one else is visiting the Titanic wreck; with Ocean Gate's future prospects all but dead, they're all but certainly forever out of that
business. All the better. It's long past time to leave the Titanic be.
I've heard David explain his experiences several times now and watched his piece from November, but I'm shocked that he hasn't become more skeptical of OceanGate's safety claims. OceanGate fired David Lochridge after he raised safety concerns to the CEO in 2018 and then the CEO sued him to try to keep him silent. There were supposedly 7 different failsafes for the Titan, but I'm not convinced the failsafes were even tested considering what came to the surface in the Lochridge lawsuit.
He’s a journalist, literally an idiotic profession filled with bloviating sycophants. People who are engineers or built these things knew immediately composites and tube(FKING TUBE! ) designs are not suitable. Go listen to James Cameron’s take, it’s v sad considering the fantastic safety record.
David as a nontechnical person, non-engineer, is just repeating the OceanGate untruths of how safe the carbon-fiber construction was.
I'd like there to be a discussion, article, documentary on why people take these enormous risks. Similar to Everest climbers. Is there something missing within ourselves that we need to go to extremes?
I hope this will be the line drawn and a clear message to leave the ship at peace.
How predictable? Predictable enough to make all people onboard sign waivers acknowledging that death is a possible result. Highly possible. The word "death" is mentioned 3 times on one single page of the waiver. If they didn't take it seriously, they made a fatal error. So sad. Eminently predictable.
Probably, they didn't read the waiver. They just signed it.
And after 25 trips down they got complacent!
Where can I read the waiver?
@@real_jcOh, they DEFINITELY read the waiver. One of them read it on video
The fact that this submersible does not have an umbilical (for comms and emergency air supply) and emergency ballast release for rapid emergency surfacing indicates they were either negligent with regards to safety or that submersible is highly sophisticated. I think it is the former or they would be on the surface by now.
Umbilical cord connected to what? It was diving 2 miles deep
@@Curtis69213 two miles might seem like a long piece of wire but consider how we communicated around the globe prior to satellite technology.

I have no sympathy for anyone who engages in thrill seeking, dangerous pursuits. However, I DO have it for those who are expected to rescue these foolish people. Anyone who seeks their thrills via escapades that serve no purpose whatsoever, must then do so accepting that they may not survive, or be rescued.
They do sign a waiver saying death is a possibility. They all understand the risks.
But if the waiver didn't state anything about the submarine's shithouse build quality and lack of safety features, then the CEO can't avoid a massive lawsuit if they bring his brain-dead body back up to sea level
and the cost is in the millions! if we had to run on "clean" expensive energy this kind of thing would be dramatically reduced.
We need to free them! Let's get these boys out!
Why cant you feel sorry for them? But harsh
Thank you so much Katie for telling everybody what is really happening about this tragedy !
For those dreaming of a better life or a roof or water, just one of those trips would have provided for many and been a great adventure in humanity.

Sadly. In some countries… that’s not true.
Thank you, Katie Couric, for this thoughtful interview and the questions you asked.
The waiver says it all. Death is mentioned 3 times. I am so sad and angry that this is even possible to do without being regulated. James Cameron thinks the people inside this contraption knew something was horrifically wrong and that must have been agonizing. I can't imagine taking someone so young on board. What a tragedy. This wasn't at all safe and I am so sad it could happen at all. Horrific. The rescue cost and time taken to search must be taken into consideration. I have huge concerns about these adrenalin junkies and I worry enormously when humans have to take huge risks to try and provide a rescue if something goes wrong. Thank you for the superb coverage and information Katie and David. It's mind blowing. This was horribly flawed in an ethical sense. You are both amazing!! 🙂
Skydiving also mentions it numerous times. We need to cancel skydiving too..any extreme hobby.
That being said, you won’t find me on any of those lol
You guys sure seem to want to keep people from making their own life decisions. What else should we ban? Cosmetic surgery? Air travel? Pet ownership? These things kill far more people than ocean submersibles and skydiving. You people are ridiculous. These people live for these kind of experiences and you want to ban it because bad news on the television makes you feel sad. Pretty selfish thinking.
Before doing any potentially life-threatening activity, I always ask myself "If things go wrong, am I OK with dying in this manner?" If the answer is "No, because I don't want to be in terror before I die," then I don't do it. Hopefully the passengers did this same kind of soul searching before participating. This perspective occurred as a result of surviving an complete engine failure in a small military aircraft that had to land in a farmer's field.
I’m my mind the Titanic is basically a burial ground. There is absolutely no need to go down there outside of scientific research, and even then technology is so far advanced people don’t need to go. Maybe this will help people learn to respect final resting places.
Yeah not sure it's worth sitting cross legged on the floor for 8 hours in a giant thermos. Silly rich people.
Thanks for saying that, I kept scrolling through looking for something like it. It seems incredibly, inhumanly morbid to go to such lengths to look at a place like that *in person*. It’s almost like high-priced rubbernecking. The deep ocean is interesting and mysterious and that’s understandable, but the site of the Titanic wreck is just something I wouldn’t want to screw with. Hard to explain but I’m so glad someone said what you said.
And opt to visit the Titanic Museum in Belfast instead.
Thank you Katie - yes, I am obsessed with this story as you are. Also, thank you to your guest for the in-depth explanation, especially for people who are not savvy in this subject, to understand what's happening.
I don't know why this tragedy is reminding me of the Challenger disaster. The frozen O Rings. The decision to go ahead. The teacher. Surviving the explosion only to be plummeted deep into the ocean. No rescue. Horrible.
Me too-thought the same thing
Katie's the best, not obsessed sad for them and there family. Very good point Katie about the $ amt involved with rescue.
LOVE LOVE your show Katie. I'm as obsessed as you are about this story. It is indeed very different from an airplane. Jets always have many backup systems.
When Katie says there’s no price put on a human life, I would add a correction. No price put on a billionaire’s life, especially if it makes good television. This is great television. These are BILLIONAIRES. Their families could buy the whole Coast Guard. They should pay us back.
That is why the mainstream media has lost credibility as reliable, relatable and relevant news sources.
Just a thought, there was some really big $ involved here. 23 dives at $1M ea approx. How money can pervert judgement. Also, the Titanic is a graveyard and I think there is something morally wrong with that as well.
This has been my thought all along-see my comment above
I could not agree more with you. The Titanic is essentially a graveyard....let the souls rest in peace. Period.
Katie, best interview I’ve seen about this. Thank you‼️
They were aware of the danger involved. They signed their lives away. If you're going to attempt to travel to the Titantic at the bottom of the ocean, at depths exceeding 13,000 feet(!), you had better have emergency protocols in place.
He's wrong about no one asking the question regarding the cost of this rescue operation. Stephanie Ruhle asked the question 3 hours ago on her show on MSNBC.
The total cost should be made public.
Yes, taxpayer dollars. Always it seems we are paying for things we don't sanction. Like WAR. Like tax breaks for rich people and corporations.

Case closed, the sub imploded at the 90 minute mark because that's when the status pinger stopped.
Wonder what it was like building up to the catastrophic event if that’s what happened. Sudden and random or was there a foreboding indication that death was slowly encroaching upon them
This truly is horrible. No one wishes this to happen. I hope we all learn from it.
Great guest. THANKS!

Probing questions and informative replies. Thank you both.
I am wondering how the father of the 19 year old is feeling about the choice to put his son in this kind of danger. I am wondering how his wife feels right now. It’s bad enough she may lose her husband but also her son. Yeah he’s 19 and legally an adult, but anyone with a one in front of his age isn’t mature enough to really know what he’s choosing.
I was thinking exactly the same.. If the father wanted to be an adventurer go ahead. To take your son that clearly is not mature enough to make such decisions is a different story. It’s a behavior of people with too much money in their hands thinking that they’re invincible.
The father was with him.
@@grahamstrouse1165 Yeah, now we know how quickly this happened the question is irrelevant. At the time, we were all wondering if they were down there in the dark and cold, running out of air. What would any parent feel if they brought their kid into that situation? Fortunately, I suppose, it was never an issue.
Wow, I think it was very selfish for the father to bring his only son on broad for his crazy death risk. The wife and mother of one ....now alone. The son told his Aunt he was terrified obviously not being able to follow his gut due to his over powering father. SO sad. That boy didn't even get to live his life or control his destiny
I make choices and if they seem a bit risky I make sure my 20 year old is not a part of it. What was this father thinking :(
Bless Them All.
David Pogue said about the interview he conducted with Oceangate, "There's a thought in my head, in my rational brain that says they (Oceangate) wouldn't put us on this thing as journalists with a TV camera if there's a risk that's gonna make them look bad, if the whole thing is going to kill somebody."
And this is why our brains are often not rational. We place too much trust in mankind although history shows we should never do that.
The Space Shuttle Challenger blew up on live TV and we know NASA didn't have the intent for the rocket launch to fail in front of millions to see including children. But human error happened and one may argue that was a more calculated risk (testing rigors for the space shuttle).
Be well and be at peace.
Great informative video👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
All these public costs to try to find and rescue these people in the submersible should be paid by this company. Hope they are rescued but tax payers must be reimbursed. Geez.

Hi Dave, THANK YOU😞
This is such a realistic stance. Very good points made about the logistics and costs, as well as the ethics.
The things that fascinate people today are beyond fathoming, the Titanic site is a graveyard of heartaches, who would want to relive this horrible event? You would put your life at risk to see that??? Very strange and unimaginable, what a waste of money, it shows where people's hearts are when this money could have gone to save many lives, the hunger and homelessness in the world, yet you care more about the dead than the living. May God have mercy on their souls, what a horrible way to die, there is still a bit of hope left!
I don’t get caring about the dead from this at all. Seems to me their reasons for going down were about seeking thrill.
Katie, Boeing denies helping with this sub, and they deny selling Oceangate anything. Rush ran around telling people that he got the carbon fiber from Boeing, and that appears to be untrue. The University of Washington helped Rush design his FIRST submersible, The Cyclops, but that was never designed to dive to the depths that the Titanic lays at, and the UW has not had anything to do with Titan or any other projects for Oceangate. NASA also gave advice to Oceangate for Cyclops, years ago, but Rush keeps referring to "partnerships" with these 3 entities in his marketing and in personal interactions with reporters and potential customers, even though these "partnerships" have long been over and had nothing to do with this vessel. You need to correct this or pull the video.
I remember walking around New York City, on solid ground, in open air, while the Kursk submarine disaster was unfolding. That was in summer, 2000, and in that instance, 118 crew members died in the course of botched rescue operations. I don't know how many were killed in the initial or subsequent explosions, or if some died slowly, but I remember it troubled my own breathing, each time I thought of what was occurring in real time.
This is quite different in every way, except for the way in which it is the same: It is a vessel far below the ocean's surface, and unless it imploded or exploded and those inside it died instantly, we are here, imagining horrible circumstances. And, yes, I have thought about how many individuals drown, far outside of submersibles, trying to reach other countries, in order to find another way to live, or live, period.

This guy, like those on the lost submersible, believed the safety hype of OceanGate.
THEY WERE WARNED 😢

I know how this can be avoided. Stop going down to the Titanic and stop making money off her tragedy. It is vile and disrespectful. It is a gravesite. Stop milking the Titanic for everything you can make off her. Let her RIP. No need to keep on disturbing her and the souls that lost their lives. I hope these five people won't be added to the Titanic's death count. Maybe after this it will deter people to want to go down, and she will get the rest she deserves.
It's a ship. It doesn't have feelings to feel disrespected😂😂 You sound like a loon
The working stiffs hard earned tax dollars once again subsidies the life style of the rich and famous. or the owners of that submersible have insurance or they are billed for the cost of the search and rescue mission. All for a joy ride! These types of people need to discover the joy of helping others, they have the ability and responsibility to make the world a better place.
My thoughts exactly.
Great to see you again, used to watch you all the time back in the day. Hope I'm not making you feel old.
So many lessons to be learned from this.
I’m obsessed about this crazy story too.
Ironically titanic was the icon of new invention of travel, was even regulated to the standards of the time, and it resulted in a tragedy...when i heard they were making a replica, bigger titanic, to travel the same route as the original, I was like "uh hell no! Not for me" wouldnt even think of doing something like this 😳
Not sure how I feel about the danger tourism and if there should be limited $’s on rescue attempts. Should it come to a decision between many or a few I favor rescue the many.
What a monumental waste of money to get inside a tin can and plunge two miles into the abyss just to get a glimpse of a rusty old ship that sank over a century ago! WTAF? People are nuts!
NARRATOR: Stockton Rush was NOT safety conscious. Indeed, he was reckless and arrogant. The window was made of plexiglass. The hull was made of carbon fiber that made the vessel unable to withstand pressure. They avoided regulations, certifications and safety protocols. AND yes David Pogue there is somebody to blame and that is Stockton Rush.
I wholeheartedly believe that this tragedy was even more predictable than the titanic sinking.
Titanic was built by the most respected ocean liner engineers of the day.
By previous standards of the day it was so overbuilt in it’s engineering, no other ship could stay afloat with the amount of bulkheads breached that Titanic was designed with.
However, that put the captain and the crew into a false sense of security that made them more willing to take risks they otherwise wouldn’t.
In contrast, Stockton Rush used untested materials and basically gave anyone who raised safety concerns about the subs construction the middle finger.
Now we know the sub had a catastrophic implosion…
Stockton Rush was a fool for ignoring the entire submersible community and their clear safety concerns of the sub.
Skeptical story?!?!?!?!?
He wasn't skeptical at all. He failed miserably as a journalist. He laughed at all of Rush's narcissistic "who needs rules and regulations" jokes, reinforcing his narcissism.
If Pogue was doing his job he would have asked about the former employee who was let go, and any of the other dozen experts who saw this coming. Then you would have seen Stockton Rush's anger rise, like it does in all narcissists when you call out their BS.
David Pogue is frankly lucky to be alive. He has no idea how close he came to death.
As for the security theater that they did when he was there (the 3 strikes thing), how adherent to it do they stick when the cameras aren't on?
Also, those 3 organizations that Rush claimed helped him design the carbon fiber cylinder came out and said that was bullshit. When he made those claims why didn't you ask for some citations and proof of that?
I'm not obsessed but highly amused. Rich folks have too much have time on their hands.
And _entirely_ too much MONEY - burning holes in their pockets.
Too much money on their hands.
From "outer" space to the depths of the ocean, no bucket list is complete without them.
That whole endeavor seems to have been extremely reckless
The military submarines that the US have only go down 1,500 feet. What made them think they could safely go down to the depth of 12,000 feet?
It’s all ridiculous
Let's hope they make it home 😢
Oceangate is going out of business, especially when they receive the bill from the US Coast Guard, the US Air Force, and the Canadian Armed Forces.
They can send info to robotic subs that have previously visited the Titanic, but nothing similar to this mission. This is why regulations/oversight are needed.
Pogue should have done his job as a journalist and call out Rush on the lawsuits and other problems. He was more of an OceanGate PR rep than reporter.
Want them found but realized after thinking more on it, would mean they would have to live through absolute horror in order to be saved. So torn on how to feel. But I do know my heart goes out to dad who not only have his own fears and nightmares but enduring this with his son. And I do feel they are not sitting quietly but tempers might be all over the place, blame game using up more air on top of no space to move. Hoping for a miracle and if found hope it was nothing like the nightmare I am imagining. ❤🙏🏿
August Piccard built a deep ocean vessel with a float filled with gasoline and travelled with his son into an ocean trench in the 1950s. This is what explorers are like! They travel to the North Pole in ships that are meant to freeze in the ice pack and drift over the pole. They climb the highest peaks in wool suits and dodge avalanches. They ascend in hot air or helium balloons. They jump out of the balloons and drift back to earth with parachutes. They SCUBA dive in caves. They don’t all survive. If people want to pay money to share in the adventure, they also share the risks. It’s sad that wool suits aren’t warm enough, or avalanches can’t always be dodged, that parachutes fail, that helium leaks, that ice crushes iron. It’s exhilarating when the explorers come back to us. I toast them all, the ill-fated and the fortunate.
But the cost of rescue???

5:04 What good is the capsule if the thrusters don't work. Were those purchased at Home Depot?
If arrogant, narcissistic men choose to risk their lives on this kind of folly, so be it. But, to endanger a young nineteen year old's (RIP) life due to his father pressuring him into joining him on this doomed voyage is unconscionable, to say the least. Sadly, the only person I feel bad about is the child and his mother.
Fatigue with every dive. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
Boeing and UW have said they had nothing to do w this thing’s design.
I must be totally ignorant, but I remember seeing a clip here on youtube of Derrick Shore recounting his experience going down to the Titanic in an old MIR submersible some 15-20 years ago. That thing had radio to communicate with the surface and its own sonar to where its going. What am I missing something here??
This is predictable - the pressure of going up and down puts stress on the hull.
We cannot be sure that the implosion of the submarine was on Sunday when communication with the surface was lost, it could have been yesterday, that would explain why noises were heard every half hour, probably the crew members were alive and trying to communicate with the outside by sending that signal help, they knew their time was short. The same damage caused by the collision of the submarine with the bottom of the sea caused the implosion to occur over the hours after the dying crew had suffocated little by little in the complete darkness in the terrors of the depths of the oceans.
Not obsessed, but I am kind of saddened; I mean, play stupid games, win stupid prizes; once again, money does not equate to good old common sense.
Praying for a miracle 🙏

Watching this a few weeks after the tragedy the most important thing I learned that David Pogue is no investigative reporter. He parroted lines that Stockton fed him without doing fact checking or investigation.
