I miss Sterling Marlin. A lot of "fans" give him grief, undeservedly for what happened at Daytona in 2001. His NASCAR career mirrors Michael Waltrip - didn't accomplish much, until they went into beast-mode on super-speedways late in their years. Man, they were amazing at doing that, as well!

    3 thoughts I have:
A: it was _way too perfect_ that *Sterling* Marlin got to drive the Coors Light *Silver* Bullet car
B: I remember playing _NASCAR Thunder 2003_ as a kid, and how in the Lightning Challenges specifically one of the cars who'd _always_ be nipping at your heels, regardless of who you were actually trying to beat, was Sterling Marlin lol
C: I felt really bad when he got hurt in 2002, not only did it feel at the time like he'd just lost his best shot at a championship, but in hindsight it really seems like he was just never the same after that crash.

Rarely lost his temper on the radio and when he did go on a rant curse words were replaced by others words that made us crew members look at each other and laugh. Yes, he is still racing and winning 😁🏁 I only left the team because I was an Engine Builder and Chip Ganassi was going to close the engine shop and get engines from elsewhere (as he did in his Indy program) Good job on this video and thanks for the memories 👍🏼

Even if you never watched Nascar, you knew the Silver Bullet Cors Light Dodge... Soon as the video started I knew the name of the driver Sterling Marlin. Its like Jimmie Johnsons blue and yello Lowes 48 car, forever known. Thanks for the video brought me back to being 9-10 years old again putting bets on Gordon to win, while my dad and his friends were drinking beer and building the race car on a Winter day in February watching Daytona. I remember the morning I woke up and turned on the news being 7-8 years old and Earnhardt died, and being upset, even though I was a kid, somewhere I had built a relationship with these drivers I watched on TV with my dad. Great memories, they closed our local track North Bay speedway in 2002 and racing it wasnt the same after that within the family. My dad still watches Religiously.

I've always loved that song, and likely will until I die 😂 And how a team could go bust in a matter of 7 or 8 years is bit of head scratcher to me. We could be talking about a different story if things hadn't ended like they did 12-13 years ago. Fortunately we saw the 40 return at Daytona in the Winter at the 500 but that's the last of that car for now 🙃

Great video. Keep it up. Loving these "throw back" reviews. But may I add a little more content regarding to the Coors light car sponsorship and Ganassi racing. Coors Light came aboard in 1995 with Kyle Petty as the driver. Sabco Racing (Felix Sabates) was still the owner of then #42 team. The car was painted silver with some mixture of red and blue (wasnt the best looking paint scheme in my opinion) Then in '97 Robby Gordon took over driving duties and the car number was changed to #40 and was painted in a multitude of colors other then silver: yellow, blue, & red was added and at some tracks it was painted black. (Brooks & Dunn paint scheme comes to mind). By 1998, Marlin jumped into the Sabates ride and it was around this time Felix was starting to look for a new co-owner which Chip came along and basically took sole ownership of the team by 2001. Felix became more of an ambassador and just over looked the (now) two team operation. So Coors Light really stayed with the same team since the mid 90s and was pretty much a long tenure sponsor for quite some time!

The fall of the Silver Bullet was caused primarily by 3 things.
    1. It seemed like Sterling was never the same after the Kansas wreck. Of course, he might have fallen off anyway due to age, but that wreck may have accelerated his descent.
    2. The decision by Ganassi to go to 3 cars instead of 2 for the 03 season. It spread the resources too thin and helped put the team in a decline that it never got out of until about 2009-2010.
    3. David Stremme being an absolute scrub in that car after Sterling left. In some fairness, the Ganassi team was at its absolute lowest point when he joined, but even then he still performed well below expectations.

Really miss the days having Bud, Miller, and Coors Light in NASCAR. Plus in early mid 2000s I remember seeing lots of public advertising with Budweiser and Jr, Miller Lite and Rusty, and Coors Light Marlin

Pulling the fender off in 2002 wasn’t a “bonehead move.” If he doesn’t pull that fender off the tire it cuts the tire down and he wrecks or has to pit. That move put him at the end of the longest line instead of wrecking him.

Not many other drivers wouldve been capable of jumping out and working on the car as they were only capable of driving, Marlin grew up in the sport and it's a shame he caught so much hell for that receipt Earnhardt had coming...

    I was @ that 02 Vegas race.
Marlin in The Silver Bullet and of all people Jimmy Spencer in the Target ride dominated all day.
1 of those 2 drivers were in the lead all day and whomever it was would run away with the lead & dip out on the field.

2002 kills me. No doubt in my mind, that Charlotte win was Sterling's if he hadn't got hurt at Kansas, which would have led to the 2002 championship. Poor guy never was the same after that wreck. Guy was and still is a true RACER.

That's odd back in 1994 Sunoco put out a cheap plastic toy truck complete with a NASCAR car and a Sunoco paint job with a number 94. As a kid I never thought anything about it but now that I look back there was no driver name on the car.
I guess it was just to imply that that was his car

What caused the downfall was Marlin’s neck injury in 2002. He was never the same after that, just like Dale Jr’s concussion in 2016 marlin never fully recovered from his injuries and because of that he struggled badly and David Stremme was a bust no question about it. A bust video on Stremme would be nice as well. If Marlin never got injured at Kansas I think he would have won the 2002 championship and would have gotten at least 1 or more wins from 2003-2007 and I think he would of stayed in the 40 until 2008 and retire after that.

I enjoyed the video however there's one thing I disagree about. You're not the first one to say it but I've heard it a few times that it was a bonehead move to fix his car under caution but trust me it wasn't. And I'm not sure if you watched the 2002 Daytona 500 but I did see the majority of it including where he pulled the fender off of his tire so let me tell you what I remember. In the closing laps Marlin was battling with someone (I think it was Gordon but I can't be for sure) for the lead and he was on the inside somehow they touched and the car on the outside went spinning through the infield and Marlin was able to continue but the fender was rubbing his right front tire. Because of the rub he was going to have to pit, essentially ending his chances of winning the 500. Or you could try to do what Sterling did and fix it yourself under red. I remember as this happened we all looked at each other wondering what was going to happen. The announcers made a big deal at first to say how stupid it was. The penalty for working on your car under red or at least for him was tail end of the longest line from what I remember (I have to believe that's changed otherwise I'm sure more people would've started working on their cars under lengthy red flags if the only penalty was to start at the tail end of the longest line). I believe he finished in the top 10. Then they interview Sterling after the race and ask him along the lines of "Did you know you couldn't work on your car under a red flag?" Then he says "No, I've never heard of that before" and starts laughing. Then one of the announcers laid it all out. Basically what I just said, he needed to pit which was going to end his chances to win the 500, because he fixed it he didn't have to pit, so in the end it costed him nothing. And maybe he could get by with it? It was worth a try in my opinion. However I don't know if Sterling knew all of these rules, that's the first and only time I have ever seen someone work on their car under red. They possibly could've parked him which then would've really been a bonehead move because those points could've cost him the championship but that's not what cost him the championship.
