Happy about your sponsorship. Just stay honest about your reviews of products and you'll get no grief from me. I've been really curious about the Takacat. Love the concept of a catamaran dinghy, but could never find a review from liveaboard peeps. Now after watching your review, I'm leaning more into going that route. Love your channel keep it up!

As an electric car owner and solar powered household, I really LOVE the idea of wind, solar and electric powered vehicles. The hubs and I are just starting to look for an electric powered tender for a new solar powered catamaran (with an added kite sail) that we are having built. I thought that I would start out with the 300 and the torqueedo 1103 CS as a small dinghy for our current boat, a 33 foot sailboat. So when I saw your video with a very clear and honest outline of the pros and cons, I decided we were going in the right direction. As Floridians, we have both the heat and salt to deal with it, so I also appreciated reading the comments section (and will do my level best to keep it really clean after use). We also purchased an extra battery, the solar charger and the phone cable so we can monitor power use. At this point we won't be doing any really lengthy travel in this tender - but that could change!! Anyway, thank you SO MUCH for this video, it really helped me gel with my decision - and although I didn't purchase the takacat through the catamaran supply folks, I did get a bunch of other stuff from them and used your links!!

Happy to see you back on the water and both smiling! Great, informative and entertaining episode. Looks like the newer Takacat has an open transom and an even more open bow....so any water will drain right out. Not having to worry about a flooded dingy while towing or in a heavy rain. would be a big advantage.

Good video, a lot of fresh ideas to think about. And I bookmarked Catamaran Supply. (Does that mean you'll soon be upgrading from the Beneteau? Hopefully you do that before the keel falls off.)
Quiet is really really important under the water where sound is 4.8x louder and the speed of sound is also that much faster. In my sea kayak sea lions, dolphins and whales are happy to be around me because I'm so quiet. As soon as a motor shows up.... On a Friday I hung out with blue whales for a couple of hours. I think they were using me like a buoy so feeding on krill they wouldn't 'vacuum' the same path. the next day Saturday I took my girlfriend and her kids whale watching on the big diesel boat full of tourists. They found a couple of fin whales and idled the boat, but based on the many times I'd spent in the ocean with whales it was clear to me the fin whales were stressed. (Grey whales often seemed very nervous about everything, but the humpbacks, blues and others figure out you're there and don't worry about you. Orcas almost visibly yawn they find a kayak so uninteresting. Dolphins are absolutely interested and will cross the bay to swim right by you take a quick look mostly from below and then keep moving. You know they're visiting you when they immediately change direction to go fish. They could've just made a beeline to the fish.)
I'm curious about what types of dinghy situations cruisers normally run into: distances (like the Bahamas where everyone goes), headwinds and currents. And what does motorowing (great term!) contribute? What would the bigger version be like and how difficult would it be to carry extra batteries? And I guess it's pretty reliable. (I wanted to get an Electric mountain bike but apparently they're horribly unreliable - so I got a Tesla that shouldn't need anything except windshield wipers, lubes, and change of tires for the next 15 years.)
Also as a sea kayaker who puts in foot braces instead of using those silly near useless pegs. The connection between the paddle and the kayak is through the feet. ( I think I can get a steady 1 - 1.5 knots directly into 15-20 mph wind). On a row boat it is also through the feet, but also through the oarlocks. On a soft sided dinghy when you row your feet aren't really connected, and your flexing that oarlock on the soft sides - basically you're probably only getting about 25% of your effort transferred through your butt- which is probably why dinghies have such cheap little oars.
I can see making a frame that connects to where you're sitting, goes down to your feet and over to the oarlocks. Doesn't have to be very elaborate or big. Now rowing will become powerful, practical and fun. (Remember to ask me about this in two years when I'm on my boat ( a cat) with a dinghy.) Kayak paddling got me in the best shape of my life and is always fun, but slow, so I'm sure I'll enjoy rowing. The 'cat' design of your Takacat dinghy is probably more efficient at slow speeds than other dinghies (until you're planning) and the raised deck will be warmer to your feet in cold places. (I use 1/4" and 1/2" (12mm) cheap yoga mats from Amazon as insulation and padding. I cut it out to fit.)

I have an ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus, which I think is comparable in every way to the torqueedo but WAY quieter. i know the torqueedo is quiet compared to a gas outboard, but the eProp is quiet period... if you ever need a replacement, it is worth checking it out if you can.

I have just recently taken out a T420lx with a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 married to a 48v-5000 battery. I got cavitation near full throttle. I tilted the motor up one notch or about 5 degrees and the cavitation was completely eliminated and I achieved a much higher top speed. Hope that helps with your adventures.

I like electric however, besides a $999 battery, you did not point out the initial cost of the unit (unless I missed it) - Torqeedo's starts at $1,700 and goes to $4,000. My Suzuki 2.5 hp petrol cost $700 delivered. As full-time cruisers, out dinghy is our car, so we have two outboards, a 20hp and 2.5hp. The 20hp allows us to explore longer distances
carries our dive gear, and we often have to anchor far out and the little electric would just not be practical in fetch and for longer distances. I feel it's important to get a outboard that is big enough to get up on a plane - typically 8-10 hp. We would love to replace our small 2.5hp for the Torqeedo however the additional cost is just too much.

I would go the electric route and keep a 2hp petrol outboard in reserve. They only weigh 12 kilos and use very little fuel. We had to do a green turtle rescue at night where it was trapped on a rope wrapped around our friends anchor chain. Without us having a petrol outboard it would have drowned. We almost did battling the swell getting there and back.

Thumbs up for appreciating this and all the great work that goes into your vids - however I think bigger safety / risk management issue is the underpowered, low distance electric motor, along with small non-RIB dinghy. All could be bad outcomes in bad weather (also for me would be inconvenient in time and getting wet in non-swim clothes) btw like the pronunciation of catamaran from Sophie;)

So for example if its 10am and your almost at full charge on your domestic batteries that it charges a specific socket with the Torpedo charger on or runs the water maker etc?

The Takacats I remember of don't have the "inflatable bow". The low non-inflatable bow makes them definitely more unsuitable for upwind/against the wave rides than other dinghies. Is this inflatable bow an option? Or maybe a "Takacat Ryan & Sophie edition" 🤔

Or more because of bouncing in the chop and side dips down? Made me think if I could use an electric outboard on my 23 ft sail boat. It still has its original 1981 Diesel engine. Would be easier than installing an electric engine in the boat. Could full space up with batteries instead. I know disadvantage of outboards as opposed to inbound engines but for calm sailing I do might be ok especially as you said there is a 8 hp option.

    • @paulsj9245

The diesel will probably do as long as it does. After that, the electric outboard sounds good if you have a mount for it! Otherwise, check out "Sailing Uma"'s DIY diesel replacement "Electro Beke", a forklift motor on the original shaft.

I see a lot of those electric torqueedo outboards lately on sailing channels. I was just thinking of why one could not use a flexible solar panel to help charge it while sitting at the dock or sitting on a deserted beach. Just a couple of watts may make a difference on making it home or taking a bit of load off the boats’ system. Btw great demo on stability. 👍🙂

This little orange magnetic coin, you call a "key" is the EMERGENCY-QUICK STOP SWITCH.
It saves you from hurting yourself when going overboard and suddenly stops the engine if you need to turn it off in danger. But only if you are whearing the line arround your wrist.
I am mentioning this, 1: because many years ago a young surf-trainer was killed on Lake Garda in Italy by falling overborard and being hit deadly by the propeller of his own strong outboard-motor. Not that your little engine will kill you, but you can easily be hurt by the propeller and the dhingi will moove away uncontrolled.
And 2: I reccomended your vlog to my sailing pupils and I would like to do so further on because it is one of the best.
Please allways remember your role model function to all your followers.

    • @ajnasreddin
      @ajnasreddin 3 года назад

Wearing it around your wrist is not enough. I saw a video where a guy was wearing it on his wrist and his hand simply slipped through. His propeller took off near his whole face. It needs to be securely attached to you.

what happens if you accidentally drop the outboard in the sea will it still work?

    • @jasonargonaut9112
      @jasonargonaut9112 3 года назад

Afair the model used/reviewed by R&S (Travel??? other probably also) is rated IP67 (waterproof up to 1m/3.3ft for 30min, in fresh water). Imo, if a big wave turns your dinghy, they are probably as good or as bad as every other outboard. With the small difference, that a (good) outboard mechanic can (always) fix your outboard (probably for less). On a remote atoll in the Pacific this might be a big advantage (if you are lucky).
Imho the more likely scenario is that you have water ingress after 2-3 years (capillary cracks, maybe because of impact, the seals mentioned by Ryan don't last as long as anticipated in your specific environment, etc) and the electronics in the engine is corroded.
This is imo the "normal" evolution with each new technology.

can get something cheaper and more battery then the cost of that.. but you'll have to have the battery on the floor like a gas tank...PROTRUAR Brushless High Performance 1/2/3 5hp and just get lifepo4 cells are cheap..about 34 pounds of battery depending on size you want more or less. i have a small 1hp electric trolling motor on 200ah battery 12v 4p lifepo4 and can go 4.5mph+ on my little 12 foot scout..it pulls 41amps at full power, i can leave it locked on full power and get about 4 hours non stop at full power till the bms on the battery shuts me off.. i have ac to dc 800wt 12v 70amp power supply using icharger 406 on syc mode and i can full charge my battery in about 3 hours.. so about 800$ usa for motor and battery instead of 3k+ on a torqeedo or epropulsion... and best part about lifepo4 cells is i can connect it to power up my DC lights or plug into inverter /solar to power up my things and also charge it but its slower unless you have a big solar system...not a fan of this things that company locks into their system because its design to use only their battery and they will charge you over triple the cost, for your extend battery it cost like 1000$, if you get a 300ah cells it will cost under 880$ and with a 1hp 12v you can full power for little over 7 hours non stop going...

You guys really, truly rock, but hey, displacement speed in an inflatable? Um, yeah, that's as wet as it gets! Seriously, you guys have davits, why not an AL bottom dink? New 4-strokes are lighter and more eco-friendly than the manufacturing process for electric outboards alone... And OK, this last part is totally subjective (isn't everything?) but isn't it kinda nice to run your hard-bottom baby right up to the beach without a care in the world?

    My Takacat is rusting!
I have got the open transom design. The transom tubes are made of stainless steel 304 (V2A) (also for cost reasons). The tubes show ugly rust after a short time in a salt water environment.
Is ther anybody else with the same issue?
From my point of view, the maintenance is very time-consuming and is not reasonable for me. Unfortunately, I only found out about this disadvantage of the high maintenance effort after the purchase. For me, this product is not recommended for salt water environments. I am very dissatisfied and disappointed with the Takacat 340 LS for the above reasons. It does not meet my expectations and, in my opinion, is only partially suitable for my application as a full time yacht tender.
I quote from Takacat's care instructions: 1. A first care step when driving in salt water is washing the transom tubes at the end of a trip with fresh water (fresh water) including thorough drying. 2. The insides of the transom tubes can be pulled through with an extra-long bottle brush. 3. If corrosion has formed, it can be removed with a stainless steel cleaner. 4. If you drive permanently in salt water, it is advisable to spray the transom tubes and optional slip wheels with a seawater-resistant stainless steel protector.
    Best regards
    Xaver
