    Yes! Porosity isn't enough! You have to overlap porosity, density (if you have tons of hair or very little), fine vs coarse strands, AND your curl level (wavy to very tight curls). The ways these four things interact is what truly gives you a picture of YOUR hair, the products and techniques it will like, etc. 🙌

    Manes by Mell explains that porosity is about whether hair is damaged and how much. You've been showing so much love to your hair for so long now, of course it's low porosity. Neither of the "tests" you mention reliably gives accurate results.

      Princess Pea I recall Mell mentioning that high porosity hair can also be genetic and that natural curly hairs have a tendency to be higher porosity. Where your hair strand starts to curl, there will usually be a break in the cuticle layer. Makes sense to me.

    Many people have more then 1 type of porosity in their hair... For example, my top hair is a high porosity. However, the hair I had shaved off (undercut), that hair is more of low porosity.

    • @littlered6340
      @littlered6340 4 года назад +2

      Yup. Embrace Natural Beauty used to speak a lot about how different sections of her hair had wildly different porosities.
      Most people's hair has many different types of porosity and curl pattern in different sections.
      Mine has different porosity and different curl type in different sections as well.

      Jessica Pape same exact thing happened to me!! My undercut is now grown out (about 8 inches long) and the rest of my hair is very long. My undercut portion is very coarse and low porosity. The rest of my hair is fine to normal, and medium to high porosity. It’s quite annoying when trying to moisturize the bottom without over moisturizing the top!!

    This actually helps me out a lot because I have very similar characteristics to both you and your sister's hair and it confused me because my hair both squeaked but took a long time to wet in the shower (my strands are thick). I also have to be very careful about using polyquats because it builds up instantly in my hair, making it look super greasy! I avoid polyquats in all my products! I also kept seeing RUclipsrs putting globs and globs of product into their hair and my hair is about as long as yours and can only handle a pea-sized amount! And when you recommended the Curls Blueberry Bliss leave-in and Biosilk Gelee... I thought my hair hated protein, but there are silk amino acids in them and my hair absolutely loved the combo! EVERYTHING NOW MAKES SENSE!!! I really would like to get this test done for both me and my mom because there might be other things unique to my hair, but also I think my mom's hair is high porosity because she always struggles with how dry it is and I really don't know how to help her keep her moisture!

  • @amandawilson890
    @amandawilson890 4 года назад +2

    Super fine hair will almost always trick those home porosity tests. And i would actually theorize that your hair used to be higher porosity because of the old damage you had on the mids/ends, but that your regrowth is much lower porosity since you're being so gentle with it now. Having 2 different porosities can also cause flash drying in the roots and mids like you sometimes get.

    I have low porosity, coarse strands and it takes literal days for my hair to dry, and I have to squeeze it to get the water in, so I never realised that a person with fine hair might have a different experience. That's so awesome. Thanks again for posting.

    So interesting. Just goes to show that there's a lot more to hair than just porosity! My hair needs sulfates to keep it from being weighed down by styling products. Gasp! I went through a bad period with limp curls, and after watching Dr. Dray's video began to wonder if my sulfate free shampoo was the culprit. After the first wash with my husband's Dove shampoo, the difference was amazing. And I'm someone who periodically clarified with the Suave.

    Dear Courtney, aminoacids are not "small proteins" nor peptides, they are protein's building blocks. Proteins and peptides are polymers built of aminoacids.
    AAs won't polymerize spontaneously, so idk what putting them into hair product does as they won't attach anywhere permanently

I will be rewatching it several times to digest the content. I knew there was a reason your hair is so shiny and it wasn't all product choice. So sad to find out that my mane bio is closing and no longer doing this. I really wanted to get it done. I'm struggling so bad to figure out for sure what porosity my hair truly is. It's so frustrating because I can't get on board with having healthier hair if I cant figure out my porosity level for sure. I read some things that make me thinki have low porosity hair and then I read other things that lead me to believe that it's definitely high porosity. I cannot get an accurate reading for myself which makes it much harder to move on in any type of product direction. Wish that they weren't closing and wondering if there are any other places that do such a detailed and large report and write up on your hair. I think it's amazing that they went as far as including products. I guarantee that there's no other place out there who does all that, but someone better jump on that soon! It would be a good way to make money, but I could see how it would also be extremely over whelming when doing research on just my hair alone, can be a frustrating ordeal!

I didn't realize that the texture of my hair could effect how I determined my porosity. I could only guess that I had higher porosity hair based on its behavior, but maybe since my hair is really fine it's lower porosity? It would explain why my hair hates heavier butters and oils. I wonder if the test would explain why my hair loves protein but hates aloe (which seems to act like a protein for some people).

    As an update:
    I did get this done and got the results a couple days ago. I'm low-density (not surprised) and low-porosity (a bit surprised).

    Yep, I knew you were LP and fine hair, your hair looks very healthy, shiny, and abundant but fine. Similar to mine but a bit thinner with age.

    You also have a healthy cuticle from all the good care youve been taking. It opens and closes as it should. I noticed this with my hair vs my friend's hair. Our hair soaks at the same rate but my hair stops dripping fast while her hair keeps dripping and releasing water.

    I have fine to medium, low porosity hair. It gets wet fast, but I can literally see the water bead up on it sometimes. I washed my friends niece's hair recently. She has a ton of coarse, low porosity hair and it took a good while for her hair to get wet. I felt like i was running it under water forever before I gave up and put shampoo in it. I left the conditioner in extra long to make up for the thick tight cuticle and her hair turned out so beautiful. I wish i could wash and style it for her all the time.

    I bought the right products and got my hair cut. I put off doing the cg method because I didn't want to be disappointed and in the end I was 😔 Just as I feared, it looks like I have a bad 80s perm. My curl clumps are thin and they're all pacticing social distancing. I have curly hair, wavy in spots and of course the worst is the frizzy parts. I'm so disheartened.

      Maybe you touched it too much? Try applying the products on soaking wet hair in your shower, very lightly scrunching and then not touching your hair at all until it fully air dries.

    I could've told you that you were low porosity just from lookin' at you. Haha. Your hair is weird (not in a bad way) in that it looks like what straight hair looks like...except it has waves. I know you said you get frizz, but I don't believe it.🤣. It's very smooth and silky.

    This was sooo interesting, I watched it as if it was my hair analysis! I think my hair might be on the lower porosity side too. It's also fine and gets buildup very easily, and it's quite shiny, especially the lower layers (the top part not so much, probably because I'm only 8 months cg and it's still recovering). Thank you!

    This is exactly what my hair looks like after using the Shea moisture coconut and hibiscus line. My hair doesn't seem to do well with heavy products despite it being pretty thick. Wonder if my hair might be low porosity too 🤔

    Wow this is the most helpful hair video I’ve ever watched. I was always confused why you would have high porosity hair since it was so healthy and shiny. My hair is also low porosity and fine, difference being my natural oil production. Now that I’ve realized I actually need to add oil to my hair, it’s more able to handle occasional protein. I would love to hear some recommendations for products/conditioners with amino acids. Thank you!

    It is funny you should say that about how shiny low porosity hair is. I am fairly sure I still have high porosity hair. It gets wet quickly, loves heavy conditioners and butters and it is not very shiny. I color my hair so I am sure that is a factor as well. I think I may do the analysis anyway because it sounds like such fun. I would love to see what mine actually says. As usual Courtney, you have put out such a great and entertaining video. I always look forward to them.

    I think what is just as important is hair density. Fine hair will tend to act different .

  • @LauraDovaloBagatelas
    @LauraDovaloBagatelas 4 года назад

    LOL, the exact same thing happened to me! I just got back the results and even though I thought I had very high porosity hair, I actually have naturally low porosity hair! My hair is medium density and normal to coarse in width and I've been doing the CG method for a year. I also switched from permanent hair dye (20 years applying it monthly) to henna about 6 months ago, which has made a huge difference in the health of my hair. I have medium to low porosity mid-shaft and high porosity ends, so once I get rid of those, I guess I'll also get rid of my products for high porosity hair...
    My hair is medullated and quite coarse, so I never noticed that I also had some build up. I guess I need to start clarifying more often and choose lighter products from now on. Oh, and my hair type is 2C (in the canopy) to 3A (around the face and underneath). Anyway, I'll be following you even more closely now that I know that we have the same porosity. Love your videos and your down to earth personality! Hugs Laura from Spain ^_^
