Hello Darrell. I just found your video today. It's good to see & hear you again. I had the pleasure of taking group and personal lessons from Darrell. Let me tell you all, this guy is the real deal when it comes to golf instruction. There's just something in the way he explains things that makes sense. The last lesson I had with you about 10-12 years ago, had me drop my handicap from a 16.7 to an 8.9. I look forward to viewing your videos. Thanks again.
Leo:Thnak you for the kind words. I get a kick from some of these. Several ask how a FAT, old dude in velcro tennis shoes know anything about golf. I should have told some of my college professors that.
I too could listen to you all day. Everything you say makes perfect sense. Brian Sparks teaches a similar philosophy and my game has improved immensely. Thank you so much for your time and effort in passing on this great advice.
I used to have an issue with hitting my 3 wood off the deck, since applying this little gem, I can now say that 90% of the time I can now hit the ball off the deck with my Hybrid and Woods.. Its a mind set at the end of the day and what Mr Klassen says does work.
+Ninja_Prime Yes, just a mindset for me also. I got a different picture in my mind and that produced a different swing. Amazing ain't it? I bought 3 of his books and there is a lot in there you won't see here. He does not give everything away but I sure don't blame him. It works for me.
If I was playing golf more regular and wanted to take it up more seriously, then I would start buying some of his material, for what I want and need at the moment, these little gems are enough for me to keep improving.
There are a lot of ways to think about the game of golf and the golf swing, and Darrell's approach is just one of them. I am not sure he is right about the lack of need for understanding the mechanical aspects of the swing, but I have found his theories and tips interesting. I have never paid for one of his courses, but I have taken his tips to my front yard and then to the golf course, and I believe that he knows what he is talking about. There are no guarantees of success in golf or most other things, but I think Darrell's advice would be useful to many, if not most, golfers. He usually looks at one thing at a time, and his advice will usually work for the problem at hand. His tips are generally really simple and well within the capabilities of the average golfer. I think they are especially useful for older golfers and non-athletes. You will not see a lot of back cracking turns. He relies on simple body movements and using the hands to throw the club head through the ball with the support of the body. This is in contrast with those who will say to "use the big muscles" to power the swing. In my own case it is hard for me to use the big muscles without creating tension and causing pain and/or injury. Darrell focuses on what happens to the golf ball (which is obviously what matters) rather than what causes it to happen. For example, if you want to hit a draw or a hook, make the ball spin in left to right direction; for a fade or slice, spin it in the other direction. A little trial and error will demonstrate that this works. If you want less curve, reduce the amount of spin. Play with these ideas on the range (or even with chips in your back yard). Get comfortable with the idea that you can control the spin. You can't just watch a video and then walk out onto the course and expect immediate success (although some of them are simple enough that you can get away with that approach), but if you are willing to put in a little time and go back to the video if there is a problem, I think they will work for most people. I think it does help if you have been playing golf for a while, or at least played something like baseball, tennis, etc. that involves swinging, so that you have some kind of feel for a swinging motion.
Hi Darrell .. how are you. I know this comment is 4 yrs behind ur video above BUT i must say that it is the most crucial video for me and should be for many many other golfers - just hit the bounce of the club before the ball, and you r on way of becoming a WOOD-3 (& other woods/hybrids) accomplished hitter .. tQ so much.
This is hysterical. Klassen can do stand-up. Don't get me wrong, I actually like his approach and think it can benefit some golfers, but his conversation with the golfer who hit 1 inch behind the ball takes the cake.
Good advice...I imagine I am playing on mud and try to "splatt!" the ground with the sole plate...this and keeping spine angle post impact usually gets the ball airborne..now if I could only control the clubface better..lol
Hiya Darrell, Yesterday I was playing with my son and I was having a miserable day where nothing was going right. I shot a 52 on the front nine and in the middle of the 9th I remembered this video and thought to give it a try. You ain't going to believe this but I shot 37 on the back. What the hell? Anyway, thanks for this because I got a whole new attitude as to how I should be thinking. Simply, all I changed from front to back was my INTENT. Now I got one question...This worked just as well with the irons for me but this vid is just about fairway woods and hybrids. Why?
I have no idea if you know what you are talking about because you go against the main stream of golf instruction, and hell if you pick up a magazine they contradict themselves every other page, but I could listen to you all day.... I don't know if its natural or not but you are great at public speaking.... Teach on brother I'm going to listen and watch until I can figure out what the hell you talking about..... Keep up the great work...
You don't need expensive equipment to show the ball flight, just set your camera up down the line at the golf range and you can see the ball flight easily. That is the only way that you can get your students on RUclips to believe what you are preaching to them - show them the ball contact and flight - no excuses! You talk too much instead of showing the actual faults and fixes by putting the camera down the line. You talk a good talk but you don't walk the walk.
+Robert Bernard Honestly, I get a lot more out of Klassen's videos because of all of the talking he does. To me, what matters is that I "get it". I'm telling you that everything this man says is beginning to work for me because it does take awhile to understand clearly what he is describing. You have to play and practice and I strongly suggest to stay away from driving range golf mats. They have too much resistance and they do not reflect hitting a ball off of turf. Teed up shots, fine. I'm 66 years old and have been playing since I was 7. My lowest score was 74 about 15 years ago. But I lost what I had because I never really understood what it was I was doing at the time. Now, it is all starting to come together and it is entirely because of Darrell Klassen. He's great!
JR Yeah, You're right. What matters is what Darrell explained. I can't listen enough of his wisdom. I learn from him much more than anybody else period. Good learners always listen carefully. Bad learner only wants to see and copy without understanding why.
This is the most honest teacher ever and he's right. Learn to hit the ball first and then you can work on your swing.

Best golf instructor ever!!! Makes it all easier!

I've watched many golf videos but none like yours. Thank you very much. I already know it will help me today as I head to the fairways.
A very easy to understand golf instructor instructs in layman terms makes it easier for the average golfer to comprehend

Funny, but smart advice, thanks, Darrell!
