    Ok, so after watching this video, i can openly say that Nerdcore, in all its entirety, is not a cause of depression, actually quite the opposite as i used a lot of it to break through my depression, and was introduced to artist that i had never even heard of. Rustage, FABVL, heck, even you Solo. And that music has and is still helping me through the darkest time of my life. Songs like DAGames Brace For The Freight Train shows that even small game creators can make something, making me wish i went with that as a job career, JT Music with songs like Night Flyer and Honk If Youre Hungry taking jabs at the stupidity of modern polotics, and even covers of songs with a new coat of paint like Caleb Hyles and Jonathan Young were inspirational on what it allowed. Nerdcore isnt just music, its a comunity, an inspiration to those in low places, heck it was Jonathan Young who inspired me to write my own song for my youtube intro video. It was DA Games that gave me the theme i should go for, and it wad you breaking down details of music that helped me understand what i needed to do to make it alive. This man is a fool, and worse, a confident fool.

    Also I'm happy you are mentioning that he singles out hip-hop here because, while a massive chunk/entire subsection (or even majority) of nerdcore IS hip-hop (so maybe he's specifically referring to that side when referring to nerdcore), hip-hop already as a genre gets crapped on for "not being real music", and when it does get to be seen as music, it's seen as low-brow or not high art, the same way he sees modern nerdcore. It is so common for people to chalk hip-hop down to sex/drugs/money when 1. A lot of non-hiphop songs are also about those things, and 2. Hip hop is just as capable as being deep and meaningful as any other genre. Even if a hip-hop song isn't trying to be deep, there's nothing wrong with having songs about surface level things, whether it be partying, exercising your status, or pokemon. Party Rock Anthem is just about partying a bunch, yet it still managed to make so many people happy. Why can't hip-hop and nerdcore be seen the same way?

    People like him are the reason why we got The Meta Era of Sonic for a while with both the writing and social media presence: “it’s a series about a talking blue hedgehog. Don’t take it seriously.” That’s how we almost got Egoraptor of all people as the Sonic Brand ambassador. Thankfully, with the new Fast Friends Forever direction we’re getting now, we seem to be pivoting back to a healthy mix of taking itself seriously with the occasional self aware joke

    • @redstreak9430
      @redstreak9430 9 месяцев назад +11

      And speaking of Sonic and Nerdcore, how about the fact that Nathan Sharp is currently doing songs for stuff like Dragon Ball and Sonic despite having “serious Nerdcore songs” as well as self aware ones. Heck, most of them like Nightmare I can argue could be played on the radio and nobody would think it was a FNAF Nerdcore song at all.

      Concordo

  • @Wince_Media
    @Wince_Media 9 месяцев назад +44

    As someone who recently started making semi-nerdcore songs about Rain Code and the Amazing Digital Circus, it's really telling how this guy looks down on nerds like he's some highschool bully who shoves nerds into lockers. A nerd can only be one of the cool kids if they accept that they're a loser and a total dweeby dorkazoid. However, if the nerd is too geniune about their love for a certain media, then they're "entitled" to their art mattering (hence the "cognitive dissonance" that nerdcore artists think their songs have value, YET their songs are about nerdy dorky things like pokemon or anime. A contradiction!)
    Whats great about nerdcore is that it is part of a greater whole. Most songs are either standalone or connect to the rest of a concept album, but with fan songs, you have the context of an entire series. KittenSneeze made a really cool song exploring another side of a character that wasn't seen in the source material, for instance, and Stupendium made a fun what-if scenario with Tom Nook. With the power of songs, these ideas get to expand into emotional experiences that can be shared.
    Also, because nerdcore stuff isn't afraid to be "cringey", it allows the listener to lower their guard and be vulnerable. Accepting that a pokemon rap or a my little pony ballad can be art allows you to set aside societal insecurities and just accept the art on a vulnerable and geniune state, and it makes whatever emotions become all the more impactful as you have loosened up and have become a more innocent version of yourself before the status quo beat the dorkiness out of you.
    One of my favorite musicians is Vylet pony and she almost exclusively makes songs related to my little pony. One of her albums, Cutiemarks, is kind of like a retrospective of the show itself. It contains fun what-if scenarios, but also critiques about some of the show's implications, how the show shaped her as a person, and how it was able to save her life. If nerdy stuff is all just trivial loser stuff, then how could it do something as meaningful as that?

    • @masterwolfgaming3436
      @masterwolfgaming3436 9 месяцев назад +6

      100% true. We Skeem seems to only see Nerdcore as music that can't possibly have any meaning because it's connected to something nerdy and popular, when Nerdcore absolutely can contain meaning and convey messages.
      Another great example of this is Natewantstobattle's FNAF 4 song "Home", a song about someone feeling broken and depressed behind repair. The song uses FNAF 4's story as a base, borrowing the theme of feeling trapped within your own home, but it has it's own meaning and subject matter that the game doesn't have (that subject matter being depression).

    Maybe it’s just me, but this guys rant feels kinda gross. He talks about how needcore fans are “weird kids,” “losers,” and a “minority,” which rubs me the wrong way because I know most nerdcore fans are autistic and neurodivergent people. And again, I don’t wanna just throw stuff like that around, but it feels weird. A lot of us are just people listening to/making songs about songs about our special interests and hyperfixations to cope, but this guy is up in arms about it and how we’re weirdos and that it’s bad for us. And the way he tries to establish that he has experience In psychology before saying that too is strange to me. But again, maybe that’s just how it came across to me. I’m not saying I think he’s ableist or something, I just think it’s kinda weird, but maybe I’m just sensitive.

There are actually many nerdcore songs with a deeper meaning about loneliness and love and there are songs like.. Well.. No Exit or Naked and Nasty (Rust Rap). It's a little sad that people see nerdcore music as something bad just because it's different

      Yeah, reminds me of recent comments on DA Games’ Build Our Machine saying the song was cringe just because some kid on TikTok danced to it and kinda went on a similar “nerdcore was never good” rant too despite the fact that it’s the main reason Bendy took off the way it did and was itself intended to be a “filler” song while he worked on Turn the Final Page. Also ironic one person brought up TLT’s FNAF songs as good Nerdcore when they were about the same as that song in terms of how they talked about the source material I think Will himself has a good mix of self aware and serious Nerdcore as well as his original Iris songs so idk if this guy would have a problem with him.

    A music genre doesn't have to strictly be one thing, saying that it does is like saying that a food topping doesn't belong on a food in particular.

  • @kitsunemusicisfire
    @kitsunemusicisfire 9 месяцев назад +10

    I tried listening to one of his songs, but the theme is just so all over the place. It's trying to be gangsta rap one minute, then emo rap the next, sticking to an auto tune singing rather than actually rapping. A lot of his bars just don't make sense. He's ok, but, at best sub par. A personal issue for me is that I just don't like how he pans his tracks, but that's just me.
    He should've NEVER taken shots at Daddyphatsnaps for his gangsta rap angle, because DPS actually went through that kinda shit in his childhood, while this mf is just doing it because it's what is trendy (what was that about cognitive dissonance, We Skeem?). It's ironic with how serious he takes himself and his music despite it's mediocrity and corniness, but then immediately takes shots at others because they aren't doing what he wants.
    (Also about how nerdcore isn't "mainstream," artists like Eminem indulged in what many people would classify as nerdcore, like with his Venom song, The Living Tombstone has produced for video games and literally has one of their songs in a movie, Joey Nato, someone who has been signed to a few record labels, has made some nerdcore songs and has also featured on a few nerdcore songs, the voice actor for Vocaloid's DAINA and the person who designed Celtic Vocaloid's AVANNA has made a few nerdcore songs, ranging from D&D to Undertale, Boyinaband [we don't talk about him anymore] has made nerdcore songs, JT Music is signed to Rooster Teeth, I mean, nerdcore has always existed in some form in the mainstream).
    Also that last line of "go make goofy music while making very carefully sure you don't take yourself too seriously, I'll be over here with the cool kids having fun" was a hard and badass line ngl.

    • @kitsunemusicisfire
      @kitsunemusicisfire 9 месяцев назад +3

      Also his tendency to tell artists not to take themselves seriously is not just for nerdcore, it's for basically any artist. I feel like wanting to not be in this world anymore, but until I listen to one nerdcore song I feel like staying here a bit longer. It helped me going through my life as a teenager and with school. My family doesn't take these songs seriously and I can tell, I can take it seriously sometimes but mainly because the songs really speak to me. Like Home by NateWantsToBattle, probably my favorite song from him next to Let Me In. So really, I believe listening to nerdcore can be taken seriously by most of the time not to the point where we compare to other popular songs that the general public listen to.

    This is kinda sad actually, like he thinks nerds should be ashamed of the things they like or something. There’s an insinuation that nerdy things aren’t true art, so by extension, anything related to nerdy things is not true art. I feel like he’s experiencing the cognitive dissonance here, why would you enjoy something and insist it doesn’t count as art? That’s like if an animation fan thought cartoons were only for kids, or a gamer thought video games shouldn’t try to have a story. Also yeah no mention of FNAF? At all? Not too far off considering the few controversies I know he's been involved with in the past from Cam Steady calling out a video We Skeem had released on Mother's Day discussing some very regressive ideas whilst he hid behind the excuse that his wife said it was ok to put that video out, to his subsequent halt to reacting to Freshy Kanal content just because Dustin took Cam's side and cut Skeem from an upcoming project (to which he responded by trying to portray the situation like Dustin was pressured by his "woke leftist" audience to cut ties with him), to his reaction video for ERB's Mansa Musa vs Jeff Bezos where he had such a gripe with Scru Face Jean that not only did he deliberately cover his face on the thumbnail, apparently (Full disclosure: I have not watched the actual reaction, I'm going off of heresay, please correct me if I'm wrong bere) he basically did not react to any of Mansa's lines, instead dunking on Scru, saying he wasn't being that clever and playing the "ERB writes all the verses, you aren't that talented" card, while turning around and praising the hell out of Jeff's verses (which side note, I think both subjectively and objectively Mansa blew Jeff out of the water in that battle). That last point makes me laugh a bit considering I was there during the one ERB livestream where he got to talk to them and essentially got soft rejected after he tried to promote himself for if they ever needed a masked character for a battle (this was when he was still using his taped mask for branding), so him being mad that another reactor he didn't like got on the show before he did seems on point.
    I'm definitely a bit biased against him, since I got roped into thinking We Skeem was somehow one of the more credible and thoughtful content creators, but I eventually realized the "I'm better and smarter than you" brand he pushed wasn't just a character he was putting on. I kinda wish more people would start talking about We Skeem so he doesn't keep flying under the radar, especially if he's going to continue promoting bad takes like this under the guise of being a high-level artist and intellect when he just clearly isn't.
    P.S. I know this didn't have that much to do with what We Skeem was actually talking about in this video, I just have a lot of pent up feelings and thoughts about him despite unsubbing from him years ago.

    I attended Nerdcore Party Convention 2024 (where MC Frontalot and Mega Ran performed, along with a whole host of other artists), and I don't think that any of the artists who performed there would agree with this guy. The fans who were in attendance would also disagree with this guy.
    I have been a fan of Nerdcore for the past 20 years and have never felt that the genre was dangerous or bad for the health of the fans.
    Nerdcore is a place for all types of people, not everyone is a "weird kid", some are jocks, cosplayers, nerds, Gen-Xer's, metal heads, hip hop enthusiasts etc. etc.
    I have a sneaking suspicion that this guy is just jealous that his songs and videos are not getting the attention that Nerdcore artists are.

Subject matter is not defining of the tone of a piece; The Lego Movie and the Spiderverse saga are visible proof of this.

    Great video, great take! I don't get what that guys problem is. Genre's evolve and split off, perhaps nerdcore now wants to be taking more seriously, what's wrong with that? As the culture shifts to people having grown up with nerdy stuff they'll start taking it more seriously. I seriously hate irony and nihilism and cynicism. I'm proud to say that I've always taken what I like seriously without irony. As a quick example off the top of my head; I couldn't even like The Room movie with tommy waseu because I don't like it, it's not enjoyable, its not fun, its bad and boring TO ME(to be clear). I didn't ironically like it I thought it was terrible. I don't get on anyone for liking it but it's not for me. I don't want to be in on the joke. There are plenty of things to sincerely enjoy. Society has been inundated with irony and a lack of sincerity for years now. Leave irony, embrace sincerity.

    True. Honestly, whenever i listen to Overthrone makes me want to wear the skin of a religious figure and knock on peoples bedroom door.
    Edattion(?)
    Nerdcore isn't just limited to a single genre or single idea, that's not what music is. In a way, the way the original video is describing Nerdcore makes it sound like- Nerdcore isn't music. Sure, it's not friggin Beethoven, but neither are 21Pilots, or AJR. You have two real 'requirements' for Nerdcore.
    Have the song be about a topic thats seen in media. Again, like a TV show or something. Like the topic of something that isn't 'original' to your song or music in general. (Ex. FNaF, The Mandela Catalogue, Super Mario). Doesnt even need to be 'nerdy'.
    Number two, have it be music. End of discussion.

    How dare people want to make music that they put time and effort to out of love for a franchise or community...clearly this is what's causing depression. What a joke. The guy who made the original video clearly and obviously just has different tastes in nerdcore, and is trying to justify his own personal preferences using fancy buzzwords and fake credentials to try and get other people to agree with him. Like, jesus dude, just say "I like nerdcore more when it doesn't take itself seriously". Boom. Easy as. You sound like a rational and mature adult who has opinions and is capable of recognising that it's all this is. Hell, at least if you're upfront about it, you might be able to find other people who agree with you on what is, at its core, not an unreasonable thing to say. But my god. "I listened to an anime nerdcore rap and it didn't make me as happy as the goofier ones, clearly this is why everyone has depression". What a joke.

    Nerdcore is a perfectly valid art form, and to say modern Nerdcore artist don’t make “real music” is stupid. My favorite Nerdcore artist rustage made a video with another nerd core artist, shwabadi, that talked about Nerdcore, and how it’s real music, and perfectly fine if you like it. Another thing is many of the Nerdcore songs are about shows that be considered nerdy, but actually deal with serious topics.

    Honestly nerdcore has been some of my favorite stuff I've listened to in the mid 2010s- early 2020s. I especially love the ones with lyrics applicable in other places like Will Ryan's Are You Proud of Me Now and all of Living Tombstone's originals. Plus a benefit of Nerdcore is that it creates a deeper respect for an artist's original creations. Will Ryan's Flashdrive helped me get through 2020 mostly due to how encouraging and beautiful it is.
