Nice one! This is the best exercice to the improve your painting, painting from life is awesome, and my advice; squint your eyes to see the big shapes and values, forget the lines when you painting, think more about the thansition of the values!

Alla prima painting is a lot of fun and very challenging. One of my favorite ways to practice. :)

Looks good. Love the new set up for the studio and it was cool to see you bring Shannon in for a demo. A tip for doing a self portrait in a mirror.......background......set up things in the background, like a light stand, so when you look in the mirror, you can line up your position by those things in the background. Also one way to avoid some of the chalkyness of added white, use Flake White or an unbleached White.

Great job! I've heard that John Singer Sargent would spend more time observing his subject than he would putting brush to canvas. He would step back, observe critically, sometimes for a few minutes, then go back to canvas and put down one mark! I think this self portrait exercise with the mirror would be great practice for those wanting to paint more like Sargent (me too!).

Great one, Slew! For those diving into the Zorn palette, remember it's all about earthy tones. Slew's choice of yellow ochre and cadmium red light gives warmth to the self-portrait. The canvas becomes like a cozy carpet.

I rarely do anything with me as a subject. There have been few exceptions, and even then I did a fantasized version of me. 😆 But you have done self portraits so many times, that you are getting the hang of it! I do believe that painting or drawing from live models is much more difficult than from a photograph. As you mentioned, keeping the same pose, making sure the light doesn’t vary on the face/body, is all crucial. And your limited pallet….I still can’t jump on that just yet, but it does intrigue me. So I may wind up trying it down the road.
By the way, it was good to see you paint again. You need to do that more often. 😁
    Keep up the good work!❤❤

You turned out a great portrait with this . Could always try next time just placing the mirror within the distance of a head turn somehow so you don't have to move around as much. Maybe position the painting table in another spot with less movement next to you or something but you did great with the challenge of observing, painting, and filming at the same time, that is not easy

Excellent as usual(still watching), I would think it would be easier if the mirror was behind you cranvas. Agree I like the zorn palette as well for the harmony of it.

I love your videos and I love seeing your progress over the years 😊
I've only attempted a self portrait once and it was really hard! It was also a lesson in self esteem/ self love etc trying to see yourself as others see you, my portrait doesn't look much like me so it's obviously a lesson I should repeat!

the painting at the end is great!!, To be honest using a mirror for painting must be a lot harder that what it seems.

I saw that your easel is hanging on the wall. How did you get it to stay there? Nails? I have a stand up Mabef easel similar to that and want to try hanging it.
