Love charcoal. It was my first medium to use as a child. I am now doing pet commissions in Charcoal. Like you said once you master it... It's amazing.

I love this series idea! I’m filming something similar as to how I use various mediums to achieve what I do…
I love seeing someone who loves a medium or technique I avoid. It gives it more depth for me.

I really enjoyed watching your process, the portrait came out amazing. I started out with charcoal pencils and blender so not nearly as messy. I need to revisit and try some of the willow sticks it looks fun.

Charcoal is so simple yet it allows you to create so much in many different unique ways and I absolutely love it! It's my go to medium to use during live drawing sessions 💖awesome video Slew 💪🏻 love the cinematography and art as always

Thank you so much for starting your series with charcoal. This is a medium I've wanted to try for a while now. I got a special charcoal paper tablet put out by Strathmore a few weeks back. I've been hesitant to start because of the mess it makes. This video opened my eyes to some new possibilities and materials I hadn't considered before. The portrait was a triumph BTW. Thanks for the inspiration, Bro. 😊🙏

Thanks for this topic. It allows me to share with my granddaughter, who’s a freshman art student in college. She’s only recently been introduced to charcoal and this was helpful.

Great Video and I already love the idea of this series. ❤
Perhaps you could mention your own typical process and maybe also the common one e.g. watercolour working light to dark
That “basic process/rules” always help me a ton in the beginning and later on u can always break those and create your own process.

Charcoal is great. I use it quite a lot alongside other mediums, or for sketching; I've only done one piece that was actually finished in Charcoal, however. I sometimes use it to scratch into wet oil paint if I feel I need to go back to the sketching stage on a part of the painting that isn't working.

Is it possible to take a not quite ideal portrait photo reference and add interesting shadow lines to create a more interesting reference, either with software tools or your imagination? Or perhaps with AI these days?

I will give charcoal a 6/10, simply because it's so messy and it makes my eyes water like a faucet. It is so nice to work with though.

charcoal is annoyingly dirty and to frame papers is more expensive than stretched canvas. That's why i hate it.
