Trump doesn't have to get rid of Mueller. He just has to get rid of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
Seriously. With Trump's own guy in there instead, Mueller couldn't do anything at all. No matter _what_ he's discovered, his boss at the Justice Department has to OK it. And that would be Jefferson Beauregard Sessions if Sessions hadn't recused himself (which is why Trump is so furious at him).
Republicans have this all under control. They've got that "memo," making up bullshit about the Justice Department, which is designed to force Rosenstein to quit or give Trump an excuse for firing him. After that, Trump will be free and clear. He won't even _have_ to pardon anyone, because Mueller will have no power at all.
Yeah, elections have consequences, huh? Too bad all those idiots couldn't even be bothered to _vote_ in 2016.

That's easy. Donald Trump is the perfectly natural result of 50 years of the Republican Party's "Southern strategy" of deliberately wooing white racists. And since racists tend to have other bad qualities, too, that explains why the GOP has also become completely faith-based, rather than evidence-based. They believe what they _want_ to believe, which makes them perfect marks for a bombastic, lying showman like Trump.
But how he actually got elected is because of liberals and moderates not bothering to vote (or, a _much_ smaller number, throwing away their vote on third-party candidates who helped the GOP win). The Republican Party loses when people vote. Right now, they control all three branches of the federal government, _plus_ most states, because liberals can't be bothered to actually *vote.* It's as simple as that.

Colbert constantly does the same bit to keep him involved, and I know you'll see it: he pantomimes holding a prop, then dramatically telegraphs putting it down so Batiste can do the key slam. He does almost nothing else to back up the wild bits that Steven does.
Perhaps that's shared blame. They could easily have him know the monologues and work out something to play alongside.
Jon is not an improv accompanist. He's a musician and legend in his own right, unlike the lackeys in the rest of late night television.
