I got you
Another excellent video. The planter is so nice. B T W, you have a great camera person.
I will pass that compliment on. It really is a team effort.
I got a lot of the big water containers from work, cut them in half, flipped the top and settled into the bottom, cut an old shirt and made a wick, cut a small square in the side of the bottom to pour water into and filled the top with dirt. I've planted tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, dill, cilantro, rosemary, sage, oregano and my peppers into them. Only cost me time to get them from work and time to cut and put together.
I’m big on diy also but I like this #vegotomatoplanter for those who are not able to do the diy projects because of mobility issues and still want to enjoy growing.
Really nice
Thanks a lot.

They are looking good!!!
Thank you Sir.
I discovered keyhole gardening! Here in Texas it works well to conserve water and cut down on fertilizers. Only water 4' x 4' raised bed every 5days during last summer draught. I love self watering smaller containers! It just makes sense in 100 degree weather!
Great tip! I have holes underneath my raised beds for the same reasons. The roots will dive deeper and better withstand drought stress.

Hey Bouje. Trying to put this baby on autopilot 👍
@@growingoutthebox what do you think about using this system to grow wetermelon?
Nice!
Are you still doing the Group compost project?
As the weather warms yes. I will start posting updates
Nice product, i wonder can you add fertilizer to the water?
Was thinking the same
Hey Broke. No need to add the fertilizer to the water. It will leach into the water. I have a follow up to my root training video which is based on the same principle. The plants are 3 times larger than the plants in cell trays because the nutrients from the compost leaches into the sand/water in the cups. The compost wicks the nutrients keeping the food in the system longer very similar to a drop of liquid fertilizer in hydroponics. It’s a closed system.
I bought three large vego garden beds this year. Really simple and easy to build, can't wait to see the difference in raised bed veg growing compared to "in the ground"

What did you have in mind for growing?
@@growingoutthebox tomatoes and yellow squash
I just found you on ig. I’m in Coweta county GA so very close to you. I planted starts about 3 weeks ago now and they are just not getting big but they’re all flowering. Should I be pruning flowers to get bigger plants ? Or let them go ahead with fruit? Standard tomatoes peppers squash and zucchini
Well howdy 🤠 neighbor. lol. I’m almost willing to bet your trays are too small for your seedlings and they more than likely are root bound. Are you going to put them in ground? That will determine your course of action. Let me know?
@@growingoutthebox I’ve got them in raised beds already. I think I over fertilized when I planted them and now I don’t know how to correct/compensate. I used black kow compost worm castings and fertilizer when I planted them. They just haven’t gotten bigger or leafier at all and are yellowing a little.
@@11hallki What kind of fertilizer did you use? Did you harden them off before planting outside?
Good day Growing Out The Box! I wanted to know if you till or break up your soil when 1st starting a garden bed or do you just build on top of what's already there? Didn't see any of your vids on this. Thanks!
Are you planting in raised beds or in ground?
Some of both. Which is best? I heard that we really shouldn't till and destroy the little eco system already in the ground. I live in SC with super hard red clay. I dug a 12" hole and it took a couple hrs for the water to drain out😟
@@pammelacaldwell-thomas4840 And that would be the correct way to test for drainage. I have clay as well but I dig underneath my raised beds and fill it with yard debris. Take the clay and mix it with compost and peat to fill the bottom half of the raised bed. Put a mix of compost and premium garden soil on top. All of my raised beds are done this way.
Thank you. Are you raised beds open to the ground? Many of the metal raised beds I've looked at have a bottom to them.
@@pammelacaldwell-thomas4840 Yes. All open bottoms. You want the microbes and earthworms to flow freely. Without them the garden will struggle to grow unless you are using synthetic fertilizers.
Hey have you ever thought about getting into beekeeping?
I would love to eventually
Could we also grow belle peppers or cucumbers in that planter as well?
You absolutely can. Here’s my link. Take a look at some of @vegogarden other self watering planters. glnk.io/vzw5/1sy
@growingoutthebox thank you! I was wondering if would work with other climbing plants. 😊
Instead of using perlite…..why not use vermiculite?
Vermiculite holds up to 5 times more water than soil. Perlite allows better drainage. In a soil mix vermiculite is my choice. “In the mix”. Not under the mix. With vermiculite on the bottom of a planter could compete for water and cause blockage because it has a stronger absorption rate than the soil. Perlite allows water to flow through, not necessarily to retain water. The soil has a greater absorption rate than perlite creating a better wicking effect.
If not for the fact that all of the tomatoes that I grow are indeterminate I would get one of these.
Can you grow peppers?
Anything you choose.
Can you use a mix of peat & coco coir instead of soil?
Peat and coco coir have no nutrient value if I understand your question correctly?
@@growingoutthebox correct but nutrients can be added, right
@@7656midbakd-wr5qk You don't want to grow in a soilless medium. What you are referring to is great for seed starting but not growing. You could do a 3rd native soil, 3rd peat and a 3rd compost. I think that's a happy spot for your plants.
You didn’t show how you planted the tomato plant

@@michaelhemphill8575 I'm generally a diy guy but I do like this.
You should know better than to put wood chips on top of soil...they're going to leech the nitrogen out of the soil from the plant.
Absolutely not! Trees fall, leaves fall. They are composted by bacteria, fungi. You also attract earthworms which eat the decaying leaves and release those nutrients back into the soil below for the plant to uptake. That's how nature recycles herself.
@@growingoutthebox wood requires nitrogen to decompose and it's pulling it out of the soil...when leaves fall the tree is shedding them for food...you're correct and yes fungi and bacteria do play that role...but they're not in the fruiting phase of their cycle so their not pulling nitrogen for food...wood that hasn't been broken down yet has to have a nitrogen source and it's going to Rob the soil
@@steelmaster73 I agree that it is taking nitrogen to break down the mulch but it does not affect the root zone of the plants. If the mulch were in the soil and not on top I would 100% agree. Wood mulch is carbon and the building block for microbial cells, carbon makes up about half of their mass and is energy for microbes. That's your soil fertility. Fungi is mostly responsible for breaking down the wood chips and then the microbes play clean up and that gets fed to the plant. It all works together. Every one of my beds is covered completely in wood mulch except my peanut bed and it's not mulched because I want the flower pegs to have easier access to the soil to make the peanuts. You are correct but there are trade offs.
@@growingoutthebox rice hulls are a better option...plus they add a ton of silica
