Guys remember that the same goes for Dr. Coyle, she even has more chances because she appears in higher levels, and she is the real antagonist of the game.
The biggest thing going against Spring Man isn't the Assist Trophy in my opinion, but also the fact they chose to not reveal the fighter. There's no reason they would tell us that it's an Arms character and not say it's their posterboy. Unless they got a brand new posterboy.
I think it will be a Arms sequel type of main character, and i think it will have a Roy type of scenario since Roy's game from Fire Emblem was delayed and he was added in Melee anyways before the game came a few months later after Melee which makes me believe that a Arms 2 like game will include a new main character or box art character that the game will be delayed because of the Corona Virus issue still going on.

Or maybe they just wanted the suspense because they know how people are ruling out Assist Trophies, Mii Fighters and Spirits. Nintendo wanted to fuel anticipation. If they were putting any of the other characters in, they could have told us who it was when they announced it was from ARMS. Maybe it was Spring Man and they chose not to reveal him immediately to create red herrings. He's not out of the running just because they didn't reveal him. He was shown with the rest of his cast. With people ruling him out because he's an Assist Trophy or because he was too obvious, that could surprise them when he comes out as DLC.

Because sakurai added the protag /poster boy of the roster as an assist to compensate for the fact that ARMS was late in the base game. Not like he can’t *GASP* change his mind now that dlc for ARMS is on the table again.
Prepare for a rant: Man, people spouting this and that about who the ARMS character will be when they don’t even know much about the series itself. I’ve seen many a video, let me tell you. You can’t simply dismiss the DLC. Playing through arcade shows the end boss as Max Brass, the commissioner of the Grand Prix. Oh hey, he was made the first DLC fighter! Go figure! Then there’s Dr. Coyle, another character with deep ties to the lore! People talk about Twintelle, but I don’t see it. Yes, she is bar Min Min the most popular character, but her ARMS are her hair. She just doesn’t embody the spirit of ARMS, in my opinion. She would have different animations compared to all the other ARMS characters if she was a part of a Bowser Jr. type roster slot, and I doubt, especially in this time, they’ll devote enough towards that. If they make a sequel, I have a feeling it will be a prequel sequel. And I think it will be Max Brass or Dr. Coyle who will become the rep. There’s not enough story basis in ARMS to lay grounds for a sequel, unlike Splatoon, but there is enough to think on a prequel. Who did Max fight to become the champion? How about his relationship with Coyle? Who exactly is Biff?

Like you know a character could be canonically dead but still be in Smash I'd assume but if they were mid-weight and had a weapon and then their skin was a huge dude also with a weapon but his weapon shoots fire, that wouldn't really work. And if you're talking about the sequel part If they already have an Arms character and a new game comes out they'd probably wanna advertise the main character or villain of that one

What people aren't thinking about is that if Spring man is the character, it doesn't mean they cant change the assist trophy to another Arms character depending on the one you're playing as. It just depends on how far Nintendo will go in this.

I’m starting to think it won’t be Springman, I’ve seen too many comments about it and I’m coming to the conclusion that it’s not Springman and could be Dr.Coyle, Max Brass, Springtron (because he’s the closest to Springman) or Kid Cobra (because why not)
I can’t wait to come back here and laugh when they add Dr. Coyle, the main villain and one of the coolest Arms characters, one that anybody who hadn’t played arms would never even think about... that being most people.
Still think its gonna be Dr.Coyle -She may have been DLC for the game but she has huge story relevance -Is the series main villain. Dr.Coyle is to Bowser what Spring Man is to Mario -Not only this but she is a female villain, increasing villain reps and female reps in smash bros -Her ability to disappear and reappear make for fun dodge animations or possible recovery move, as well as floating is a really cool run and might even work better with a character with such wobbly limbs -Her Final Smash can be Hedlock which thematically fits her the best.
For those who don’t know ARMS lore, here’s a fun fact: “Springman” is actually a title passed down by the representative the Spring Gym to strong fighters who audition for the role. Our “Springman” is the 3rd in the line of “Springmen”. (I’m getting this info from the ARMS free comic that was released. It can be found online). I have a theory that we may get Springman, but maybe it could the fourth of the Springman lineage, or possibly an apprentice to our Springman, who could maybe be the poster child for ARMS II.

I dont think there will be characters as costumes, they are way too different to be costumes, twintalle uses he hair while everyone else uses their amrs. So it would feel like adding luigi wario and waluigi as costumes for mario
Yea, but with certain matchups, it could work. For example, Min Min, Springman, Ribbon Girl, and SpringTron could work. They are close in design, recognizable and wouldn't look too off.
Twintelle is the odd one out. Sure, she's a fan favorite, but also the only one of the fan favorites that wouldn't really work. Spring man, ribbon girl, ninjara and min min would all fit togheter and so would kid cobra, helix, lola pop and springtron
I think adding an arms character that isn't already in smash (mii costume, assist trophy, and spirits) would be the best way to go personally. Because if they did add a character that was already in then people would send death threats for waluigi (or the characters they wanted) again and I don't want to see that happen to sakurai or the company again. I think people who are still arguing that spirits deconfirm characters are just sticking to it from before Ultimate's release. And _then_, it was true. Because why would they show a Shantae spirit in the trailer if they were ALSO planning her to be a fighter (just to be clear, as the base roster fighter) Same with Geno, Waddle dee, Tails, you remember. The argument started then and people just aren't thinking hard enough about it lol - and not changing their stance despite the total situation changing with DLC. Characters in Smash all have a role and rarely ever have two roles (at the same time) Like they obviously go through the effort to take out conductor Link on the Spirit Train level if Link is in the battle, or Dedede in Dreamland 64. I agree to an extent. I do believe base game Spirits do not deconfirm fighters as Fighters Pass 2 wasn't even thought of during base game development. I do believe that Spirit Events deconfirm for Fighters Pass 2. If they decided to do Fighters Pass 3, then I do believe Spirit Events MIGHT have a shot.

In my opinion, Spirits deconfirm fighters: the way a spirit can BOTH a spirit and a fighter is if they have a secondary design to use as a fighter (FOR EXAMPLE: Samus using her Other M design for her spirit, Mario using so many powerups, and the two biggest examples; Kirby using his Mech as a unique spirit and Yoshi with baby mario as a unique spirit), also I guess I should mention that unique spirits also includes things like Final Smashes, and Moves for GW and Wii Fit trainers spirits, so far we have seen ZERO thing that go against that piece of evidence and the only thing I’ve seen people try to push as evidence is that they edited a spirit battle to change the Cuphead battle to use the Mii costume...I don’t get how it’s evidence since it just means they can change the spirit fight and, atm, haven’t actually removed and spirits yet. As for who I think will be in smash...I feel either Helix or Max Brass since he actually seems to be connected to the lore of Arms despite being DLC in the game...unless we see actual hard evidence that spirits don’t deconfirm fighters I’m believing this
Good point. I do think Springman has a fair shot out of the bunch because they could easily switch in springtron. But that would also mean Mii costumes, spirits, and assist trophies are eligible to be fighters. That would be insane but also please a lot of fans by opening possibilities. Out of the characters that aren't represented, Mechanica imo has the best shot to get in. I don't know why she's so underrated, she's perfect for smash and checks of so many boxes we are missing; heavy, female, mech, and surprising.
Well it’s a good thing ARMS character each have like two to three different renders so they have a spare that can be used as a fighter’s spirit while keeping the original.
Here's the thing though, say if Spring Man or Ribbon Girl were to be in the game, they would need to have fighter spirits (those spirits of the characters artwork that switches with their Smash artwork). However, since their artwork is already used for the base game spirits, how would they have a fighter Spirit. Also, Spirits of multiple characters always go by different names (such as Fire Mario and Metal Mario, etc), so how would the naming convention work in this game.
The "Spirits deconfirm character" theory is, in my opinion, pretty solid with a bit of context. The idea being "why put a character spirit if you want to add him as a fighter" (same for AT and mii costume) is not stupid as long as you consider when both were chosen, here : spirit, AT and costume were added before even deciding of a FP2. Having content deconfirming a fighter when both inclusions are already decided seem pretty coherent. Thus recent spirits may deconfirm FP2, base roster are less likely. Nice summary tho, could add that: Max Brass is also likely as one important character of the game that really fit the gameplay

The idea that spirits deconfirm is tied to having spirit and content separated in date release. Why not putting the spirit on the fighter spirit board if he's at work ? @@hederas_ K. Rool's Mii Costume was in Smash 4 and they kept all the first-party Mii Costumes in Ultimate while cutting the third-party Costumes from the base game. That's why Chrom have costumes along with the characters in Smash 4 that were both fighters and Mii Costumes like Link, Samus and Captain Falcon.
I don't think Spring Man has a chance for that DLC makes assist trophies into fighters, that doesn't make any sense. I mean Sakurai properly wanted someone else to represent arms more than Spring Mam because he's too basic!
Ive said it since the first fighters pass: all depends on when the characters for this were decided. Sakurai said it himself before, arms didnt get added earlier because smash and arms werent in developlement at the same time. This fighters pass was likely decided waaaay more recently. This reason is also why I dont think this confirms arms 2. Its possible, and id welcome it, but its still doubtful to me.
I’m currently assuming that Spirits do deconfirm characters for two reasons. 1. I don’t want to get my hopes up for X character that’s a Spirit. If I assume they’re off the table, it’ll be a bigger surprise for me when they’re revealed. 2. Due to the huge list of Spirits in the game, assuming that all of those characters are deconfirmed is actually helping me to think of more creative characters that could be added to the game. “Limitation is the mother of creativity”, as they say.
Side note: this isn’t important anymore, since the first Fighters Pass is already over, but I definitely think Spirits deconfirmed characters for the first Fighters Pass. This is because the list of characters for the pass was decided upon before the base game came out. The team already knew they’d have to add Spirits for at least the playable characters (since that’s what you get for completing Classic Mode), so they could have removed any Spirits those characters had in the base game. This logic doesn’t hold true for the second Fighters Pass though, as all of those characters were decided upon after the game had already come out.
Terry Syvertson I don’t have as solid of a rebuttal for that one, but it’s still something. The non-fighter Mewtwo trophy in Smash 4 was featured in both the 3DS and Wii U versions of the game. The 3DS version of the game launched in Japan over a month before the 50 fact extravaganza where Mewtwo was revealed. They may not have had the DLC plans finalized at the launch of Smash 3DS, so the trophy was left in. As far as why the trophy is in the Wii U version, I’m guessing they made the high-res model before they knew they were adding Mewtwo, and since the trophy was already in the 3DS version they just left it in. My above point applies double for the Lucas trophy. If they didn’t have Mewtwo planned at the release of Smash 3DS, they definitely didn’t have anything after Mewtwo planned.
Technically everything in the base smash game without DLC's (besides spirits)ad's up to the price of the game, so technically that means the ribbon girl mii was for an price, and unlike Chrom and K Rool, they didn't get 2 different variants at the same game, they had to wait for the next game, so it wouldn't make sense to have Ribbon Girl appear two times in a row. (420th comment btw lol, and i was about to be 690th like but im a few likes early.) Just choose Springtron lmao, it's the next closest thing to having Springman. And if the smash DLC was already decided, why would they make the next fighter a spirit then? Also at 5:00, he do something like this for Rex so uh, it's still technically a deconfirm.
I think the hierarchy of importance goes: Assist trophies > Mii Costumes > Spirits Going down the list, here are my choices: If nothing deconfirms characters: 4 Spring Man costumes with 4 Ribbon Girl or Springtron. If Assist trophies deconfirm characters: Ribbon Girl (It seems unlikely to have another character with her though.) If Mii Costumes deconfirm characters: Ninjara If Spirits deconfirm characters: Helix Also how dare you say no one would miss Byte and Barq :(
There is a difference between the Mii costumes/spirits and assist trophies. Mii costume and spirits were never explicitly stated to deconfirm. Assist trophies were. On the brawl dojo page for waluigi and the smash 4 miiverse post on yet again waluigi, sakurai said that being an assist trophy means "they will not be playable". And for everyone about to comment "but sakurai changes the rules all the time look at Ridley" sakurai never said Ridley couldn't be in. Sakurai only ever said he was unsure if he could represent Ridley well.
Spirits are debatable but Mii Costumes are added because Sakurai couldn't make them playable so he made something that can feel as close as actually playing that character, via Mii Costumes. Though that one could be retconned. There is a possibility that Spring Man gets added and the Assists, Spirits and Mii Fighters rule gets axed once and for all, or there's a chance that Max Brass gets added and those rules are forever cemented. Either way, a new Xenoblade rep is no longer out of the question as DLC. If the former happens, then Rex has a chance, once more. If the latter happens, we may get Lora as the next Xenoblade rep since Torna representation is largely absent in Smash so far

I came up with a reveal trailer idea for a spirit fighter, imma use Twintelle as an example. It starts with someone fighting a spirit battle, and winning, earning Twintelle. They realize what she has to offer and don't like it, attempting to dismiss her. However, a message says "you cannot dismiss this spirit" they groan, then get tapped on the shoulder. They turn around to see the spirit. They reach out to touch it, and as they do it starts to glow. A blinding light is formed, as the spirit starts to take shape. Suddenly' Twintelle is standing there. Show splash screen and gameplay, and final smash, and at the end she picks up the switch and favorites her spirit, then turns it back to the starstruck player, leaving.
All these factors make them much less likely, Sakurai has said many times that they plan the DLC characters quite far ahead of time so putting them in the game in other ways beforehand seems redundant. Of course, now that we're on wave 2 of fighters, additions at the games launch may be less impactful.
The comparison with springman to Mario is bad. Mario is the main character and protagonist, the story revolves around him and the game is called MARIO... springman is not that. A better comparison would be springman is to arms as what Mario is to smash bros
I hope some of the assist trophies get to be upgraded, some of them deserve to be playable characters. Like Issac, Zero, Shadow the hedgehog or Knuckles the echidna.
I have a gut feeling that this will be the only case of an assist trophy, mii costume, or spirit becoming a fighter in the Fighter’s pass. After the reveal, everyone will be speculating other assist trophies and spirits who could be DLC, but the rest of the characters end up being new

The problem with ARMS is that it got forgotten quickly, it tried to steal Punch Out's throne after the creator retired but failed, they're doing this just to fill its servers. This isn't the first time Sakurai added a last second character advertising a half-assed shovelware game (Ex: Corrin)
Theres no rule assist trophies cant get upgraded, Nintendo could do whatever they want. To be honest, they should have an entire pack of assist upgrades. So many characters people have wanted for 10+ years are assist trophies; Im sure Sakurai would have added them in the base game if they had more dev's/time. They can only do so much, and we know since the main goal was to bring back all characters, they were no able to make many new fighters in the base game. Sakurai said this himself, and thats why Ridley, King K Rool etc got in the base game before assists such as Shadow, skull kid, Krystal. Im sure he realizes these are popular characters, but he could only do so much with his team for the base game. I hope nintendo realizes assist trophies are their biggest pool to pull from for popular picks fans have waited for. Yes, I know people want more third party people like Sora, crash, and all that, and I understand... however I still feel assist upgrades should get their own pack to please those fans.
I dont think base game spirits deconfirm fighters, but I 100% think spirits added in updates do. Think about it, they already know who the dlc characters are and they all need their own spirits and spirit boards, so why would they put the spirits in before the character. That's why I think series like Resident Evil and Astral Chain have no chance of getting a character
Coming from someone who whole heartily believes spirits deconfirm fighters it feels like you're underminding the entire debate about it because they decided to use pngs. Theres other bits about the spirits that make them feel like they deconfirm fighters such as: How while spirits can be VARIATIONS or other designs (See Other M samus) They can't be the base design meaning characters with more than one design can legit still be in (Shantae, kinda Shovel Knight if AT rule is broken, and others). Also you have to realize atleast for now we have zero evidence that spirits fights can be deleted or removed (any examples of this happening could invalidate the spirit rule) but atm we know they can change spirit fights (cuphead example). The main reason I feel this rule is important is due to the fighter spirits, for every character they have a spirit which is most of the time the most recent render or image representing that character meaning for new or one shot characters they legit have no other renders that could be used to represent that fighter. For Arms especially this is important to realize since they really dont have a ton of renders of the characters meaning other than the spirits theres not really any other renders to use for min min or twintelle, and because of this I honestly feel Max Brass will be the rep for the DLC. Think about it, He's the champion of arms being in their lore the best out of everyone, despite being dlc was in the game since launch as a boss, has an appearance that screams arms to people who may not really get the series, and can be added in without disturbing anything.
Spirits literally did deconfirm characters in fighter pass 1. It was not silly. Spirits were designed to be stand ins for characters who weren't playable. However I don't think they worried about fighter pass 2 when they made the original spirits which is why for fighter pass 2 it doesn't matter nearly as much.
I feel like people saying the dlc can't get in are ignoring the fact Max Brass and Dr. Coyle are hands down the most important characters in the game's lore, with Max Brass being much more iconic in the world of Arms than anyone else in the roster or that Lola Pop is very beloved by the fanbase and the devs

Personally I think mii fighter costumes can be characters as long as they don’t look exactly like the character. Like I see tails still being a character since his costume doesn’t look exactly like him, with his hat not covering the whole face, but like sans or cuphead look exactly like the character, so they’re off the table. So whether or not the ribbon girl costume looks too much like her or not is up to you.
I dont think it is a good idea to use a completely new character. They should do spring man, ribbon girl, min min and Ninjaro and just give each one an alternate color scheme inspired by the remaining characters
Spirits do deconfirm a fighter because a fighter also has a "fighter spirit" and having a normal spirit and a fighter spirit as the same person is weird.

The Arms character won't be like Bowser Jr. The only reason all those Koopa Kids were possible is because they all basically act the same. I'm talking about Taunts, Intros, and Outros. That just won't fly with the Arms characters. I 100% believe Spring-Man will break free from his Assist Trophy, and just be replaced with another one, like Min Min or Ribbon-Girl. Spring-Man would have 8 Costumes and if he doesn't have 2 to 4 being his Metal counterpart, then Nintendo missed that opportunity 😅 Either that or it'll be a new character for Arms 2. If you're sad that goku is not allowed in smash, JUST REMEMBER: Shallot, Android 21, Towa and Mira have all originated from a video game. So they are legible for entry in smash, but not an unlikely one.

I don't think spirits deconfirm characters...BUUUUT, I think Helix has a good chance of being the ARMS rep. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Helix actually. Also, I don't think Max Brass can be dismissed. While he wasn't always playable, he was always in the game as a boss. He has a good chance of making it in.

The biggest thing going against Spring Man isn't the Assist Trophy in my opinion, but also the fact they chose to not reveal the fighter.
There's no reason they would tell us that it's an Arms character and not say it's their posterboy.

I think it will be a Arms sequel type of main character, and i think it will have a Roy type of scenario since Roy's game from Fire Emblem was delayed and he was added in Melee anyways before the game came a few months later after Melee which makes me believe that a Arms 2 like game will include a new main character or box art character that the game will be delayed because of the Corona Virus issue still going on.

Or maybe they just wanted the suspense because they know how people are ruling out Assist Trophies, Mii Fighters and Spirits. Nintendo wanted to fuel anticipation. If they were putting any of the other characters in, they could have told us who it was when they announced it was from ARMS. Maybe it was Spring Man and they chose not to reveal him immediately to create red herrings. He's not out of the running just because they didn't reveal him. He was shown with the rest of his cast. With people ruling him out because he's an Assist Trophy or because he was too obvious, that could surprise them when he comes out as DLC.

Man, people spouting this and that about who the ARMS character will be when they don’t even know much about the series itself. I’ve seen many a video, let me tell you.
You can’t simply dismiss the DLC. Playing through arcade shows the end boss as Max Brass, the commissioner of the Grand Prix. Oh hey, he was made the first DLC fighter! Go figure! Then there’s Dr. Coyle, another character with deep ties to the lore!
People talk about Twintelle, but I don’t see it. Yes, she is bar Min Min the most popular character, but her ARMS are her hair. She just doesn’t embody the spirit of ARMS, in my opinion. She would have different animations compared to all the other ARMS characters if she was a part of a Bowser Jr. type roster slot, and I doubt, especially in this time, they’ll devote enough towards that.
If they make a sequel, I have a feeling it will be a prequel sequel. And I think it will be Max Brass or Dr. Coyle who will become the rep. There’s not enough story basis in ARMS to lay grounds for a sequel, unlike Splatoon, but there is enough to think on a prequel. Who did Max fight to become the champion? How about his relationship with Coyle? Who exactly is Biff?

Like you know a character could be canonically dead but still be in Smash I'd assume but if they were mid-weight and had a weapon and then their skin was a huge dude also with a weapon but his weapon shoots fire, that wouldn't really work.

For those who don’t know ARMS lore, here’s a fun fact: “Springman” is actually a title passed down by the representative the Spring Gym to strong fighters who audition for the role. Our “Springman” is the 3rd in the line of “Springmen”. (I’m getting this info from the ARMS free comic that was released. It can be found online).
I have a theory that we may get Springman, but maybe it could the fourth of the Springman lineage, or possibly an apprentice to our Springman, who could maybe be the poster child for ARMS II.

Yea, but with certain matchups, it could work.
For example, Min Min, Springman, Ribbon Girl, and SpringTron could work. They are close in design, recognizable and wouldn't look too off.
Twintelle is the odd one out. Sure, she's a fan favorite, but also the only one of the fan favorites that wouldn't really work.

I think adding an arms character that isn't already in smash (mii costume, assist trophy, and spirits) would be the best way to go personally. Because if they did add a character that was already in then people would send death threats for waluigi (or the characters they wanted) again and I don't want to see that happen to sakurai or the company again. Characters in Smash all have a role and rarely ever have two roles (at the same time) Like they obviously go through the effort to take out conductor Link on the Spirit Train level if Link is in the battle, or Dedede in Dreamland 64. I agree to an extent. I do believe base game Spirits do not deconfirm fighters as Fighters Pass 2 wasn't even thought of during base game development. I do believe that Spirit Events deconfirm for Fighters Pass 2. If they decided to do Fighters Pass 3, then I do believe Spirit Events MIGHT have a shot.
Normal spirit exists for Peach, Daisy, Pirhana Plant and others anyway.

In my opinion, Spirits deconfirm fighters: the way a spirit can BOTH a spirit and a fighter is if they have a secondary design to use as a fighter (FOR EXAMPLE: Samus using her Other M design for her spirit, Mario using so many powerups, and the two biggest examples; Kirby using his Mech as a unique spirit and Yoshi with baby mario as a unique spirit), also I guess I should mention that unique spirits also includes things like Final Smashes, and Moves for GW and Wii Fit trainers spirits, so far we have seen ZERO thing that go against that piece of evidence and the only thing I’ve seen people try to push as evidence is that they edited a spirit battle to change the Cuphead battle to use the Mii costume...I don’t get how it’s evidence since it just means they can change the spirit fight and, atm, haven’t actually removed and spirits yet. As for who I think will be in smash...I feel either Helix or Max Brass since he actually seems to be connected to the lore of Arms despite being DLC in the game...unless we see actual hard evidence that spirits don’t deconfirm fighters I’m believing this
Good point. I do think Springman has a fair shot out of the bunch because they could easily switch in springtron. But that would also mean Mii costumes, spirits, and assist trophies are eligible to be fighters. That would be insane but also please a lot of fans by opening possibilities.
Out of the characters that aren't represented, Mechanica imo has the best shot to get in. I don't know why she's so underrated, she's perfect for smash and checks of so many boxes we are missing; heavy, female, mech, and surprising.
Well it’s a good thing ARMS character each have like two to three different renders so they have a spare that can be used as a fighter’s spirit while keeping the original.
Here's the thing though, say if Spring Man or Ribbon Girl were to be in the game, they would need to have fighter spirits (those spirits of the characters artwork that switches with their Smash artwork). However, since their artwork is already used for the base game spirits, how would they have a fighter Spirit. Also, Spirits of multiple characters always go by different names (such as Fire Mario and Metal Mario, etc), so how would the naming convention work in this game.

The "Spirits deconfirm character" theory is, in my opinion, pretty solid with a bit of context.
The idea being "why put a character spirit if you want to add him as a fighter" (same for AT and mii costume) is not stupid as long as you consider when both were chosen, here : spirit, AT and costume were added before even deciding of a FP2. Having content deconfirming a fighter when both inclusions are already decided seem pretty coherent. Thus recent spirits may deconfirm FP2, base roster are less likely.
Nice summary tho, could add that: Max Brass is also likely as one important character of the game that really fit the gameplay

@@hederas_ K. Rool's Mii Costume was in Smash 4 and they kept all the first-party Mii Costumes in Ultimate while cutting the third-party Costumes from the base game. That's why Chrom have costumes along with the characters in Smash 4 that were both fighters and Mii Costumes like Link, Samus and Captain Falcon.
I don't think Spring Man has a chance for that DLC makes assist trophies into fighters, that doesn't make any sense.

Ive said it since the first fighters pass: all depends on when the characters for this were decided. Sakurai said it himself before, arms didnt get added earlier because smash and arms werent in developlement at the same time. This fighters pass was likely decided waaaay more recently. This reason is also why I dont think this confirms arms 2. Its possible, and id welcome it, but its still doubtful to me.

I one hundred percent agree with this part of the segment. This is the most likely possibility.
I’m currently assuming that Spirits do deconfirm characters for two reasons.
1. I don’t want to get my hopes up for X character that’s a Spirit. If I assume they’re off the table, it’ll be a bigger surprise for me when they’re revealed.
2. Due to the huge list of Spirits in the game, assuming that all of those characters are deconfirmed is actually helping me to think of more creative characters that could be added to the game. “Limitation is the mother of creativity”, as they say.
Side note: this isn’t important anymore, since the first Fighters Pass is already over, but I definitely think Spirits deconfirmed characters for the first Fighters Pass. This is because the list of characters for the pass was decided upon before the base game came out. The team already knew they’d have to add Spirits for at least the playable characters (since that’s what you get for completing Classic Mode), so they could have removed any Spirits those characters had in the base game. This logic doesn’t hold true for the second Fighters Pass though, as all of those characters were decided upon after the game had already come out.
in smash for wii u's base game mewtwo and lucas had trophies before they were added as dlc and they each got new trophies added

The non-fighter Mewtwo trophy in Smash 4 was featured in both the 3DS and Wii U versions of the game. The 3DS version of the game launched in Japan over a month before the 50 fact extravaganza where Mewtwo was revealed. They may not have had the DLC plans finalized at the launch of Smash 3DS, so the trophy was left in. As far as why the trophy is in the Wii U version, I’m guessing they made the high-res model before they knew they were adding Mewtwo, and since the trophy was already in the 3DS version they just left it in.
My above point applies double for the Lucas trophy. If they didn’t have Mewtwo planned at the release of Smash 3DS, they definitely didn’t have anything after Mewtwo planned.

Technically everything in the base smash game without DLC's (besides spirits)ad's up to the price of the game, so technically that means the ribbon girl mii was for an price, and unlike Chrom and K Rool, they didn't get 2 different variants at the same game, they had to wait for the next game, so it wouldn't make sense to have Ribbon Girl appear two times in a row.

Going down the list, here are my choices:
If nothing deconfirms characters: 4 Spring Man costumes with 4 Ribbon Girl or Springtron.
If Assist trophies deconfirm characters: Ribbon Girl (It seems unlikely to have another character with her though.)
If Mii Costumes deconfirm characters: Ninjara
If Spirits deconfirm characters: Helix

There is a difference between the Mii costumes/spirits and assist trophies.
Mii costume and spirits were never explicitly stated to deconfirm. Assist trophies were. On the brawl dojo page for waluigi and the smash 4 miiverse post on yet again waluigi, sakurai said that being an assist trophy means "they will not be playable".
And for everyone about to comment "but sakurai changes the rules all the time look at Ridley" sakurai never said Ridley couldn't be in. Sakurai only ever said he was unsure if he could represent Ridley well.
Agreed. Assist Trophies are NPCs, and Spirits are just PNGs.
Not to mention Sakurai even emphasized that Piranha plant is a fighter not an assist trophy.
Spirits are debatable but Mii Costumes are added because Sakurai couldn't make them playable so he made something that can feel as close as actually playing that character, via Mii Costumes. Though that one could be retconned.
There is a possibility that Spring Man gets added and the Assists, Spirits and Mii Fighters rule gets axed once and for all, or there's a chance that Max Brass gets added and those rules are forever cemented.
Either way, a new Xenoblade rep is no longer out of the question as DLC. If the former happens, then Rex has a chance, once more. If the latter happens, we may get Lora as the next Xenoblade rep since Torna representation is largely absent in Smash so far
My thoughts? While it’s probably 90% certain to be a new character, I’d love to see a multiple costume character.

I came up with a reveal trailer idea for a spirit fighter, imma use Twintelle as an example.
It starts with someone fighting a spirit battle, and winning, earning Twintelle. They realize what she has to offer and don't like it, attempting to dismiss her. However, a message says "you cannot dismiss this spirit" they groan, then get tapped on the shoulder. They turn around to see the spirit. They reach out to touch it, and as they do it starts to glow. A blinding light is formed, as the spirit starts to take shape. Suddenly' Twintelle is standing there. Show splash screen and gameplay, and final smash, and at the end she picks up the switch and favorites her spirit, then turns it back to the starstruck player, leaving.
All these factors make them much less likely, Sakurai has said many times that they plan the DLC characters quite far ahead of time so putting them in the game in other ways beforehand seems redundant. Of course, now that we're on wave 2 of fighters, additions at the games launch may be less impactful.
Ribbon Girl is not even remotely second place.
Min Min and Coyle both have 1000x better odds.

The comparison with springman to Mario is bad. Mario is the main character and protagonist, the story revolves around him and the game is called MARIO... springman is not that. A better comparison would be springman is to arms as what Mario is to smash bros

If Spring Man gets in Smash, it would confirm all assist trophies, mii costumes, and spirits, That's a lot of characters to choose from then.

The problem with ARMS is that it got forgotten quickly, it tried to steal Punch Out's throne after the creator retired but failed, they're doing this just to fill its servers. This isn't the first time Sakurai added a last second character advertising a half-assed shovelware game (Ex: Corrin)

So many characters people have wanted for 10+ years are assist trophies; Im sure Sakurai would have added them in the base game if they had more dev's/time. They can only do so much, and we know since the main goal was to bring back all characters, they were no able to make many new fighters in the base game. Sakurai said this himself, and thats why Ridley, King K Rool etc got in the base game before assists such as Shadow, skull kid, Krystal.
Im sure he realizes these are popular characters, but he could only do so much with his team for the base game. I hope nintendo realizes assist trophies are their biggest pool to pull from for popular picks fans have waited for. Yes, I know people want more third party people like Sora, crash, and all that, and I understand... however I still feel assist upgrades should get their own pack to please those fans.
I dont think base game spirits deconfirm fighters, but I 100% think spirits added in updates do. Think about it, they already know who the dlc characters are and they all need their own spirits and spirit boards, so why would they put the spirits in before the character. That's why I think series like Resident Evil and Astral Chain have no chance of getting a character

Coming from someone who whole heartily believes spirits deconfirm fighters it feels like you're underminding the entire debate about it because they decided to use pngs. Theres other bits about the spirits that make them feel like they deconfirm fighters such as: How while spirits can be VARIATIONS or other designs (See Other M samus) They can't be the base design meaning characters with more than one design can legit still be in (Shantae, kinda Shovel Knight if AT rule is broken, and others). Also you have to realize atleast for now we have zero evidence that spirits fights can be deleted or removed (any examples of this happening could invalidate the spirit rule) but atm we know they can change spirit fights (cuphead example). The main reason I feel this rule is important is due to the fighter spirits, for every character they have a spirit which is most of the time the most recent render or image representing that character meaning for new or one shot characters they legit have no other renders that could be used to represent that fighter. For Arms especially this is important to realize since they really dont have a ton of renders of the characters meaning other than the spirits theres not really any other renders to use for min min or twintelle, and because of this I honestly feel Max Brass will be the rep for the DLC. Think about it, He's the champion of arms being in their lore the best out of everyone, despite being dlc was in the game since launch as a boss, has an appearance that screams arms to people who may not really get the series, and can be added in without disturbing anything.
Spirits literally did deconfirm characters in fighter pass 1. It was not silly. Spirits were designed to be stand ins for characters who weren't playable. However I don't think they worried about fighter pass 2 when they made the original spirits which is why for fighter pass 2 it doesn't matter nearly as much.
I feel like people saying the dlc can't get in are ignoring the fact Max Brass and Dr. Coyle are hands down the most important characters in the game's lore, with Max Brass being much more iconic in the world of Arms than anyone else in the roster
or that Lola Pop is very beloved by the fanbase and the devs
I don't want multiple characters in one slot to deconfirm the spirits rule, because I already know idiots would be like, "no character has a spirit, that's an alternate costume!!!!!"

My most wanted is Isaac, so I'm gunning for Spring man because he would at least show that assist trophies aren't a death sentence. It's weird to root for a character because they could make your favourite more likely, but here we are.
Personally I think mii fighter costumes can be characters as long as they don’t look exactly like the character. Like I see tails still being a character since his costume doesn’t look exactly like him, with his hat not covering the whole face, but like sans or cuphead look exactly like the character, so they’re off the table. So whether or not the ribbon girl costume looks too much like her or not is up to you.

I dont think it is a good idea to use a completely new character. They should do spring man, ribbon girl, min min and Ninjaro and just give each one an alternate color scheme inspired by the remaining characters

The Arms character won't be like Bowser Jr. The only reason all those Koopa Kids were possible is because they all basically act the same. I'm talking about Taunts, Intros, and Outros. That just won't fly with the Arms characters. I 100% believe Spring-Man will break free from his Assist Trophy, and just be replaced with another one, like Min Min or Ribbon-Girl. Spring-Man would have 8 Costumes and if he doesn't have 2 to 4 being his Metal counterpart, then Nintendo missed that opportunity 😅 Either that or it'll be a new character for Arms 2. I'm willing to bet on it lmao

I don't think spirits deconfirm characters...BUUUUT, I think Helix has a good chance of being the ARMS rep. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Helix actually. Also, I don't think Max Brass can be dismissed. While he wasn't always playable, he was always in the game as a boss. He has a good chance of making it in.
I felt like playing arms again just because I was bored and I saw a PARTY CRASH BETWEEN THE MASCOTS. could this determine who gets in? Spring man and ribbon girl are the 2 characters in the party crash. I wonder if the winning character that wins that in game event would get into smash
The main issue against the current ARMAS spirits are the lack of DLC spirits...ARMS II can bring that new stuff.
