    Mine was leaking. Got the low coolant warning. Took it to a garage. They called and said, “ok. We looked at your car. It will cost $2895 to fix your car.” I had it towed to a BMW mechanic. It needed a $150 part called a heater control valve. That’s it! Beware of these guys that try to charge you too much!

  • @pfoglar
    @pfoglar 5 лет назад +31

    Good advice! One more thing to do as part of this topping up is to run the coolant pump purge cycle to vent any possible air that may have found its way into the cooling system. This is done much like a normal coolant system bleed, with the ignition on, you set the climate control to max temperature with the fan on the lowest speed (if present, I also turn the temperature mix wheel located on the central vents to hot), and then fully depress and hold the throttle pedal for 10 seconds. You will hear the coolant pump start to perform the coolant pump purge cycle which lasts around 14 or so minutes. It is typically advised that you connect an intelligent battery charger to prevent your car's battery from possibly being drained, this is especially important if you have to or decide to repeat this process several times.

    • @stevesas632
      @stevesas632 4 года назад +1

      Hi, when bleeding the system with coolant pump purge cycle, should the reservoir cap be on & the bleed screw open? I will be doing a drain & refill. Thanks

    • @pfoglar
      @pfoglar 4 года назад +2

      Steve SAS, when I did this, I started by pouring the premixed coolant into the expansion tank with the bleed screw out until there were no bubbles in the coolant spilling out of the bleed hole. I then removed the excess coolant in the expansion tank till the dipstick showed maximum and then ran the purge cycle. I have done this with the expansion tank cap open and closes, doesn’t seem to make a difference. Some people do this with the cap on, and others not. If the cap was on, open it after the purge cycle and top up till max if necessary, then repeat the purge cycle. It’s also a good idea to connect a battery charger/tender when doing this.

    • @stevesas632
      @stevesas632 4 года назад +2

      @@pfoglar ok thanks for the advice, I will get some BMW coolant & deionized water (seems easier to get than distilled).
      The bleed screw just seems strange to me, would have thought the idea of it was so air bled from it while the pump purging.

    • @pfoglar
      @pfoglar 4 года назад

      Steve SAS, rather try and get distilled water, deionized water can cause problems in terms of corrosion so I’ve heard. Most pharmacies should have distilled water if you cannot find at parts places.

    If your coolant level is low, I’d check some hoses and make sure you don’t have a leak somewhere. Really shouldn’t be a whole lot of reasons for lost coolant, even between changes (or at least to where it’s noticeably low).

    Hi Justin, Thank you very much for your very precise and extremely helpful video., I just brought a old 2004 BMW 525i (Gasoline). The vehicle history says the car is was orginaly purchased and registered in Germany and imported to Norway in 2005. I am in Norway (Stavanger). When I checked, I cannot visually see any coolant in the coolant filling chamber. Also the coolant level indicator float is missing. The previous owner who used the car for few months do not know what coolant was used. Is there any way I can find out which coolant I should purchase and how how to fill it with out a float indicator. Also is there anyway to find out which engine oil should I purchase to top it up. Being old car, I cannot depend on the sensors anymore. Appreciate your help.

      I assume you've sorted this out by now, ha ha. Any decent coolant brand/use BMW or Mobil 1 oil and buy a float indicator or top up until the dash warning disappears or it's within an inch or so of bottom of the filler cap..

      Green is the wrong type. Next time you flush your coolant, make sure to refill it with a BMW approved formula which is blue

      @@justinbuice you think it HAS to be a BMW approved one ? I emergency filled with some regular blue coolant from a hardware store because my car was REALLY low on coolant after I bought it, if I remember correctly it was approved for aluminium block engines (got the n52b30) but definitely not approved for any specific brand

      That should be okay. As long as it’s for aluminum engines.
