Welcome to the BMW Maintenance Series where you are going to learn how to maintain your BMW yourself and save a bunch of money in the process. In this video, I show you how easy it is to flush the coolant / antifreeze fluid on your BMW E90 but this will be a very similar process on my 3 series cars. You want to first check to see if the coolant fluid is clear and doesn't have any oil or smell burnt. You should replace your coolant every 2 years or so.

Overfilled my coolant like you and already had the bottom stuff back on the car so i used a hose and siphoned the extra out

I use the 50/50 euro premix from the auto store and my car has been fine . It’s not even blue, but green lol. Just make sure it’s the correct mixture the color doesn’t matter

You sure? I thought the chemical components of the coolant was special because of the reaction with the magnesium alloy of the block of the green coolant was bad for the block.
Always use blue for bmw
@@buildanddriveHe’s right it just has to be a specific type: Silicate Enhanced Hybrid Organic Acid Technology or Si-HOAT.
can i get all out with that one screw? no need to get the car warm so it opens up the whole cooling curcuit like it used to be on older cars?

are you sure you run the venting process with the bleed screrw and cap tight?
i did it the wrong way. run the venting process with the screw CLOSED and the cap open until you dont see anymore air coming through, then try to get the right amount of coolant in the expansion tank and close it so it can pressurize and run throughout the rest of the engine.
Just draining the radiator will actually drain a pretty small amount of the total coolant in the system….the radiator doesn’t hold that much in comparison. You need to do both the radiator and main coolant hoses to water pump to meaningfully do a ‘coolant swap’.
Yes, if you tilt the car forward a bit, it should drain a lot of the coolant out.

@@buildanddrive every bmw I’ve bought has had different color coolants they all run perfectly fine .
@@aliasSix In europe, I've only found 2 brands of BMW coolant that say they support the N52 engine (magnesium alloy block) so you cant just use any coolant because it can have a chemical reaction of its not compatible. For other engines, very possible you can just put any coolant into it.

No, the coolant is an anti corrosion liquid, the water helps with the cooling. You need water.
i realized my coolant has been EMPTY since 2020 and i’ve had no problems😭 now once i add coolant, my water pump fails 🙄

Only water? Are you living in a cold climate or only hot?
60 to 63 range - somewhat hot
The engine and radiator corrodes without coolant. May lead to head gasget leak among other problems.
