  • Draining and filling your cooling system is a maintenance requirement as well as being part of many repairs. Be careful when working with coolant. It is poisonous and especially dangerous for pets. Clean all spills immediately and rinse area with water. Engines used in BMW E90 automatic transmission models hold about 8.2 liters of coolant, manual transmission models hold 8.4 liters.
    In this article, I'll go over the steps involved with replacing the engine coolant on the BMW E90 models. Be sure to work with a cool engine and confirm the cooling system lacks pressure before opening cooling system.
    Lift and support front of vehicle safely. See our tech article on lifting your BMW E90. Remove front engine splash shields. See our tech article on engine splash shields removal.

    I love you Pelican. So helpful. Can you make an instruction on how to flush the heater core on e90?

      If we get a chance to perform the procedure, we will be sure to document it.

    Thanks for clear instructions. For my E90 with 130k miles, would you recommend a coolant flush additive prior to new coolant and would that also help with maintaining condition of the coolant pump and thermostat as preventative maintenance?

      If you are replacing it as scheduled by the factory, no flush needed. However, you can if it went past the recommended timing.

    Is detaching thermostat hose required? How much coolant is trapped inside of it anyway?

    • @pelicanparts
      @pelicanparts  3 года назад +1

      No it is not. You could drain the block to get anything remaining out.

    My BMW 335D E92 (pre LCI) doesn’t have those radiator draining plugs. I was told I would need to drop the intercooler to see them… I’ve spent a while under my car and cannot see this either.

      You have to remove the lower radiator hose to drain the coolant on your vehicle.

      @@pelicanparts hi, yeah I did this and completed 2 flushes with distilled water and then added the G48 coolant into it. Some air locks disappeared but my car is still overheating. I had my water pump replaced by a garage and it works but the thermostat wasn’t replaced. RAC came out, the guy said the hose to the radiator (right side nearest coolant expansion tank) was red hot to the touch, but the left side hose / lower radiator side was cold, even after hitting 90°C on the Carly app, the hose was freezing. Any idea? As I’ll be working on the car Sunday.

    Mine is leaking from the radiator drain plug, seems the plug is loose how does that happen tho? Hopefully easy fix by just screwing it back in

      Check and replace the drainplug and seal.

    do i do this before i change old radiator to new one?

    • @pelicanparts

      Drain coolant first. Replace radiator, then fill and bleed.

  • @imanwan2861

    I replace water pump and thermostat and bleed the coolant system and no coolant leak. However, after 20 mins test drive no issue. Next day coolant leak on driveway. What can cause that?

    • @pelicanparts
      @pelicanparts  6 месяцев назад

      Something left loose or an o-ring that was damaged. Pressure test the cooling system to find the source.
