I actually used Putty to wirelessly connect to the Retropie to edit my .ini files for the power switch. A little easier than doing it right on the system itself. ETA Prime showed how to do it. Also, pretty cool that you were able to reuse the existing power button. One thing you didn't show was the Select / Coin button completed. Really fun project and ridiculously easy!
It was easier for me at that moment to just use a keyboard. Telling people how to find the IP then source Putty then login etc... Just use the built in file manager go to the file hit a button type a line and then be done with it. I do use SSH to manage it though.
Great video man. I'm so close. I can get it to turn machine on but it doesnt turn off. I added code in retropie as you stated. Any idea where or what I am doing wrong that is making the switch turn on only? Thanks

Do you think i would have to do the whole controller and speaker part on the new marvel vs capcom 1up arcade? I heard that one had better controllers and stereo speakers. I’d love to get that one if I could bypass those whole processes.
I haven't seen the new cabinet, but if they used the same joysticks they would not be compatible with the standard USB encoders that I used. I would think you could use the speakers since speakers are speakers. You would just need to figure out how to get them into the audio out of the Pi.
From what I heard the new wave of Arcade1ups have improved joysticks/buttons.. Would it be worth buying the Marvel 1up cab and leaving the controllers/buttons alone and just installing the USB encoders and LCD control board?
I followed the instructions but I’m using led buttons with usb encoders and when I turn the power switch off everything seems to shutdown except for the buttons. When I use the switch that came with my pi the buttons do shut off. Is this what is expected to happen? Is there a way to fix that?
15:15 Dont know if u figured it out or not, but the reason the buttons seemed to "spam" is because one side of the inputs are a turbo for each button. The other is for single press/hold.
Can't you just hook up a headphone jack to the original speaker wire and plug it into the pie? The pie has an audio jack already built into it, or is it just not loud enough doing it that way?
You will need an amp to get any decent sound out of it that way. That is what some people do and it works for them. I had the amplified speakers lying around so I decided to use those.
Lmao Dam I found your video late I went thru exactly the same thing and I'm a super noob and I couldn't find anybody on here going through the same thing thank you so much for posting UCI to felt the same way I wanted to use the original buttons and I change the joysticks when I change the joysticks the pi could not recognize the joysticks for some reason so when I wandered doing was using the original that worked the only thing was my characters wouldn't jump forward granted I did have to make the hole for the hotkey and coin

@@VirtualCrawfish Do those Arcade RetroPie images allow for non-arcade games as well? Like SNES etc? Also, does the power switch mod turn everything off including the speakers and monitor? Great video!
Yes they do. You can add different emulators for all types of games. I just chose to keep this one as a classic arcade cabinet. The on off switch mod just powers off the Pi. Everything else still has power from the power strip.

I actually just use PC speakers and plug them into the audio out of the video controller. I also have done another cabinet and I plug the pc speakers into the audio out of the Pi.
Hey, have a question was hoping you might have some insight on. The LCD Controller I ordered specifically said it's for M170ETN01.1 which is the same display you have. According to the Amazon title, the board should be M.NT68767 however the picture, packing list and the board itself says M.NT68676.2, which is what you installed. Any idea on why the discrepancy? The link you provided doesn't specifically mention your display model number as compatible so curious on if you knew something that made you feel ok with the install. Appreciate any info you can offer.
I took the board that ETA PRIME used and then did a quick google search and read where it would work. I didn't really put too much research into it. Are you having compatibility issues?
@@VirtualCrawfish No, was just trying to be extra cautious so I don't blow anything up. The manufacturer said the controller I got was the right one, just a typo in the title. Everything is working on my end so far. Thanks!
Figured out I got the newer version of the usb encoders but what is throwing me off is the usb wire is comes with. Its solid black but where do I plug it in at?
The joysticks need to be replaced if you use the usb encoder boards that I use. I am not sure of a way to use the existing joysticks with a custom build.
They can be used. I did it today. You can't use the cable that is already connected to the joystick. The USB controller has a Joystick connector that fits it but it doesn't work because that USB controller expect X Y+- axis info to come in while the Arcade1up connector is really just 4 buttons and a ground. The way to connect them is to just use the cables that come with the USB controller and connect them to the 2 metal pieces that come out of the microswitches. Basically you connect each direction the same way you connect regular buttons.
@jamie Instead of connecting with the big cables you plug the small ones directly to the micro switches. There will be 2 metal tabs coming out of them. 1 on the short and one on the long side. That's where you plug the cables. They are polarity sensitive so have each color match. imgur.com/jJCtwvo This picture was when I first did it and was working good. I modified it since by cutting the connector a bit so that they really grip and don't need glue to be secured. For the buttons you can use the stock cables that are soldered to them. This is what I ended up with. imgur.com/us8Jnbt
Power Switch works BUT!!! I have an issue with it automatically turning back on about 2 hours later. I can switch it to on then back off and it'll power down again but then approx 2 hours later it'll power back on again. Did you have this issue?
This is from one of the comments below: Mine did this until I moved it to a different circuit in the house. The outlet I was using was on the same circuit as a refrigerator, and when its compressor kicked on, it would pull a lot of power really fast for a second, like how running the vacuum makes the lights dim briefly. This triggers a wake-from-halt on the Pi because the voltage dropped enough. There are probably better ways to fix this, but mine went from waking every 30 minutes on its own to never waking by accident, so that's the easiest solution, if possible.
@@VirtualCrawfish thanks bro this makes perfect sense bc the location of my cab is where lights dim slightly when mini fridge kicks on which is on same circuit. Thanks again 👍🏽
If you want to go this far, better off buying a flat pack ready to assemble arcade cabinet in the form factor of your choice from the ebay's, Etsys or or Craigslist, Mercaris of the world. LCD monitor s of any size and aspect are a dime a dozen at thrift, yard sales, free from friends and family.

Thanks
First thank you for watching and commenting. Make sure that when you added the code there are no spaces or tabs at the end of or before that line of code. This is the guide I followed icculus.org/finger/icculus?date=2019-01-01&time=09-32-56 It is possible the switch might be bad or needs to be reseated.
@@VirtualCrawfish I want to say thank you again. Thanks for the great video and thanks for replying. I am subscribing to you. With that being said, your video is perfect. I had another image on a different SD card and the machine shuts on and off with no issues. I am a happy camper.
Is it possible to have credits as 2 buttons (Like HP+Start) ? Would rather not add extra buttons if I don’t have to. Thanks for the tips. Gonna due it to my cabinet soon.
There is no doubt in my mind it is possible. Someone posted in the comments how it could be done. I just need to take the time to map it out correctly. Good luck with your mod!
hi, my MK2 arcade1up cabinet has 2 x 4 pin connectors for the joysticks.. how do I wire these to the usb controllers? thanks... ps awesome vid.
Cut the 4 pin connector off and then wire each color into a 2 wire connector and plug that into the 2pin up down left right on the encoder.
Do you thinks it's good to just buy a SD card preloaded with games and compatible with raspberry pi?
Do you think i would have to do the whole controller and speaker part on the new marvel vs capcom 1up arcade? I heard that one had better controllers and stereo speakers. I’d love to get that one if I could bypass those whole processes.
I haven't seen the new cabinet, but if they used the same joysticks they would not be compatible with the standard USB encoders that I used. I would think you could use the speakers since speakers are speakers. You would just need to figure out how to get them into the audio out of the Pi.
Thanks for this thorough video. I have a cocktail cab so there is no way my power JST wire can reach my Pi. Any ideas on how I can extend it?
Hmmm I wonder if you could order a pigtail and just splice in some extra wire?
I have a cocktail cab also. thinking about splicing
Great video, will this setup work with the partycade version of arcade 1up?
What button are you using to return to the game menu selection, after you finished with a game, great vid by the way considering doing this
I used the select and A together combo for this build.
Will this for a 4player cabinet? I'm going to order the TMNT cabinet.
Do have to change the existing buttons and joy sticks? Or can you still use it with all existing?
From what I heard the new wave of Arcade1ups have improved joysticks/buttons.. Would it be worth buying the Marvel 1up cab and leaving the controllers/buttons alone and just installing the USB encoders and LCD control board?
Unless they use a different style of joystick then they probably won't be compatible with the USB encoders.
I followed the instructions but I’m using led buttons with usb encoders and when I turn the power switch off everything seems to shutdown except for the buttons. When I use the switch that came with my pi the buttons do shut off. Is this what is expected to happen? Is there a way to fix that?
Wow....pretty straightforward....
So the on off switch doesn't control the monitor an the speakers, u still need to turn them off manually?
Instead of drilling holes for the joystick, you could have switched mounting plates.
Fried pie sounds delicious though
It really does! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
15:15 Dont know if u figured it out or not, but the reason the buttons seemed to "spam" is because one side of the inputs are a turbo for each button. The other is for single press/hold.
This was done a while ago and I did correct it. I have since done another cab with a Pi4, but I didn't do a video on it.
@@VirtualCrawfish cool. Not knockin ur skill bro. Jus trying to help.
SO COOL IT WORKED! Thank you for the ON OFF Hack :)
Glad you are up and running!
Great video. It has a ton of great ideas for me to try. Great job
Thank Josh! I appreciate that. Everything is still going strong with those mods!
What build of Retropie are you using for this machine? I love the look of it.
I followed these instructions and when I turn it on I just get alternating color screens, red, blue, green, white, etc… how do I fix this? 😢
I just ordered the screen board. Actually cme with the ground screw
AWESOME! Let me know how your project turns out.
Subscribed. Thanks for the info!!
Excuse my ignorance but what is the function of installing this raspberry pi in this unit?
For the pi4 pin 4 and 6 are being used by the fan. Can we use pin 7 (GPIO4) and pin 9 (GND) instead?
Can't you just hook up a headphone jack to the original speaker wire and plug it into the pie? The pie has an audio jack already built into it, or is it just not loud enough doing it that way?
You will need an amp to get any decent sound out of it that way. That is what some people do and it works for them. I had the amplified speakers lying around so I decided to use those.
I plan on keeping the buttons that came with my TMNT arcade 1up. Will I be able to still have 4 player capability if I’m just changing the LCD board
Since this would be a MAME conversion the answer is YES but you will need an encoder for each player.
Can the volume switch and speaker be made to function?
time to upgrade my arcade1up
Lmao Dam I found your video late I went thru exactly the same thing and I'm a super noob and I couldn't find anybody on here going through the same thing thank you so much for posting UCI to felt the same way I wanted to use the original buttons and I change the joysticks when I change the joysticks the pi could not recognize the joysticks for some reason so when I wandered doing was using the original that worked the only thing was my characters wouldn't jump forward granted I did have to make the hole for the hotkey and coin
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. The key to the joysticks is making sure they are wired exactly the same on the usb encoder board.
What program was used to organize all the games? I just have roms in the NEOGEO, FBA, SNES, Genesis, and GBA folders. I still have to scrub everything, but would like to have things more organized for shooters, brawlers, fighters, etc.
I used a 32G retropi image created by Wolfanoz. I didn't modify it at all since it was a great package as is.
@@VirtualCrawfish Thanks! Also, is it possible to simply plug the speaker directly into the LCD control board and not use an amp?
@@Ashhong1 The speakers I used were self amplified cheap computer speakers I have had for years. I did not buy an amplifier.
Another question. Does it matter which raspberry pi I buy? I noticed that Prime has one with a case
Most of the images for the retro pi are for the 3 series. I would stick with that one for now.
Hey - just found your video via Reddit. So if I'm retaining the current controls, is there anywhere I can buy *just* the USB encoders? Or just buy the kit you did and toss the buttons?
You can, but I found that for an extra few dollars it was worth it just to have the buttons around.
@@VirtualCrawfish Any instructions on how to preserve the power for a light-up marquee? Have the new BurgerTime machine myself and I haven't seen instructions on how to do so...
Great video and a similar setup I’m working on! Did anyone figure out how to wire up the stock 2 pin (I believe it is) with yellow wires into the controller board without an amp? And will this setup be stereo or mono? Thanks in advance!
Didn't really attempt the stock 2 pin since I had speakers lying around. The setup I have is stereo if the game is stereo.
@@VirtualCrawfish I got the stock 2 pin one to work without the app and both the power on and volume switches
Sorry I didn't see where you connect speaker wires to the video controller board could you point me in the right direction please
Thanks!
What usb encoder do you recommend to purchase for the stock joystick and buttons for the FF A1Up?
I am not aware of any encoder that works with the stock joysticks.
This is exactly what I will be doing with a genuine lowboy arcade cabinet.
That will be a cool project! Thank you for watching!
Wow, I love it! I can't wait to try this. So helpful! Would raspberry pi 3B work,or must it be the B+; which did you use?
I used the 3B. Good luck on your project!
Got some of my stuff to mod lone today. Problem is my usb things for my buttons are different than yours. I'm gonna try my best to see if it will work
Figured out I got the newer version of the usb encoders but what is throwing me off is the usb wire is comes with. Its solid black but where do I plug it in at?
Hmmm hopefully it will work. Maybe things just need to be plugged in to different locations?
Great video!
So the joystick from arcade1up need to be replaced or can i used them also
The joysticks need to be replaced if you use the usb encoder boards that I use.
This is what I ended up with. imgur.com/us8Jnbt
super cool video :) very interesting :)
Thanks Joe! This thing is a lot of fun.
Can the original joystick work with usb encoders?
Do anyone here know the name of old ninja game say hopa when do magic as he can become twice the game look such shinobi plzzzzzz
Nice vid! Where you find all the emulator and arcade game to put in the pie? Kinda starting at the bottom of the ladder here =D
Xbond go to arcade punks , navigate to frontends then pie. all images are there.
Wait so you say in your description to not buy the button kit? Where do you get the usb encoders the ?
You can buy that kit and use the joysticks and the encoders that come with it, but you won't use the buttons. You will use the buttons that come with the 1UP. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I finally have my SD card for the Pi but I'm going to have to get the usb encoders you have. Another question as well. Everytime my pi is on and it goes to the loading screen it kicks off is there a reason for that?
Did you put a Pi image on the card to boot from?
I've got it figured out now. It's the loading screen that keeps coming on
Or the screen saver I believe
Hello I'm new to your channel that is a lovely system I'm after a raspberry pie to use on my tv with hdmi is there any version of pie that's best for mame and all the emulators
They just released details about the new Pi 4. If you can wait or get one of those then do it. If not then the latest will still work for a MAME emulator just fine.
do you have a video how you mapped the buttons for this cabinet?
I do not. I mapped them to match the Streetfighter configuration. Thanks for watching and commenting.
nice nice!!
Thanks man! This was a fun project!
NolaFam Arcade I’ve been thinking about doing one of these. But I want a full size one I think.but I know I will not play it much it will just be a like art piece.
I just bought a board with pre drilled holes
How do I use/mod the volume button if I want it to work with a modded the new xmen cabinet
Will Same method of pi new button lay out and new board work for mk cabinet?
Unless they changed how they are making the cabinets they should work.
How do you switch back and forth from the main game and Retropie?
You don't. This makes the retropie the only option.
Can you use the stock joysticks?
yes you can but they are crap, the bottom are fine, the joysticks horrible
What website did you use to get your ROMS?
How did you get it to come up with the retropie 32gb arcade edition at 3:55????
I used a 32G retropi image created by Wolfanoz.
You can get it to say whatever you want.
Have you done anything to vol switch?
question can you do this with mortal kombat 2 dont have street fighter arcade 1up
Yes
With the on/off switch mod is it the same GPIO pins with Rpi4? Cant find any information.
I haven't purchased an Rpi4 yet so I don't know if they are the same.
josh brewer have you found anything on the Rpi4? I have the Rpi4 but havent tried this yet. Just wondering if there was any different pins before i did.

I subbed and if you like come check my fam out at Level By Level Gaming
Thank you! I will check you guys out!
Can I use the same controller board without adding any usb boards?
The USB boards are what the Pi needs to accept the joystick inputs. I don't think you can skip that step.
seems with the latest models they glue everything in to place
I was thinking about picking up another cabinet. I hope they are still mod friendy.
@@VirtualCrawfish bit late to the party but I bought and modded my Arcade1up this past weekend. Can confirm they glued every connection and even the screws in the control panel. Had to be more forceful than I liked, it isnt pretty. Especially removing the sticks. Going to now just rebuild this part with some wood.
Revz8bit did they glue the button wire connections? Xmen 1up, I want to use the same buttons - but install the usb encoders. Is that possible?
@@jkphillyfan glue was on the connections on the controller board and buttons, as well as on most screws for the controller board and joysticks
It was a SF2 cabinet from Walmart
Instead of a pi can I just use a PC that already has batocera installed?
yep - once you get the hdmi converter then anything that outputs hdmi and can run the controls works.
Where do you get the ROMS and how to set up on the Retro?!
Search arcadepunks retropi images and that will get you where you need to go.
Nice video you should have way more sub
Thank you Jody. I really appreciate that.
Good evening can someone provide me a link to get the cool image he was using on his PI? I have a PI 4 already completed all the mods but my image is a basic buster. Please help.😁
