Ok, this looks great, the instructions are easy to follow, I have modded several things over the years, and I am not computer saavy or a tech geek in any way, shape or form. There are a couple of mods I just can't perform, unfortunately, this is one of them. I only purchased this Arcade 1Up unit just to do this hack, and after about 26 attempts, I still can't get it to work. I get stuck at the very first one each time. I quadruple checked that the power is not connected, the switch is in the off position inside the cabinet, the USB C to USB cable is connected correctly ( I tried 10 different cables) and can't do the second step to install the mystery to PCB. At this point, I am willing to do that before I smash this My Arcade 1Up unit and possibly take a hammer to my pc.
@@PDubsArcadeLoft ok, I have a Firestick, but it's not the correct cable. The Arcade 1Up requires a USB C to USB data cable, the Firestick has a flathead one (forget if it's an A or B) that doesn't fit and falls out when put in. The C ones don't stay in great, but they fit. So idk, must be the unzipped files I may have to look at to make sure I did correctly. I'll try one more time, but after that, I'm just going to keep it stock until I run across a preloaded usb stick I could purchase.
Mine (Marvel Superheroes) keeps turning on if i plug the usb into a pc. Yes, the little switch in the back of the silver box is OFF. it doesn't seem to matter which setting that little switch is in btw. even jumping the two pins on the board doesnt keep it off. HELP!
Thinking I'll put everything on my Marvel Countercade and probably hand select the best NES/early Genesis sports titles to load up on my nephew's NBA Jam countercade with the 3 buttons.
@@PDubsArcadeLoft In this case I would map 2P Start to it. Set it up so that 2P Start has no other hotkey actions tied to it(so that just pushing it doesn't trigger a hotkey function) and in theory it should work fine. At that point the only remaining issue is the lack of a button to map to Select/Coin.
I'm trying this on my MK countercade, but while it's plugged into my computer via USB, the dang machine powers on. the hard line is unplugged and the PCB is switched to off. the actual power button on the control panel is also OFF. When I go to install drivers (step 1), it's not working. Any suggestions?
Yes the PC will power on the Countercade when the USB cable is plugged in, that's OK if it does, you just don't want the main power supply plugged in. Try another USB cable not all are compatible
oh wow! definitely been hoping for a mod like this although the only cabinet I own at the moment is the stand-up ms. pac-man... and nevermind the lack of buttons on that one, haha. perhaps if there were some way to interface with my atgames joystick (still the best damn home arcade purchase I've ever made!) but seems like a cool mod. hoping they can figure out the hot-key situation cus that's gotta suck not being able to play all those six-button capcom fighters on there!! I guess that does sitll leave the door open for the D&D and NEO*GEO stuff, though.
To mod the big ones you basically turn it into a raspberry pi. You can connect anything to it at that point as you’ll have 4 USB ports in the box you use. You can’t do it this way on the big one.
I get to the Mame folder and then I’m lost! I’m a rookie! Where did you get the 4000 games from to drag to mame? I’m on the usb driver roms, mame, what am I picking up and where is it to drag to mame? Thanks so much!
The on/off button in the back of the unit will NOT turn off and when I plug something into the port and connect it to my computer my computer it is powering the unit because the unit stays on even if the power is off. I need to turn the unit OFF and still be able to plug into my computer. HELP!!!

What should I do? I've tried 6 different cords and even the one time it wasn't powering the countercade it said "Running Installation Failed". I REALLY WANT IT TO WORK---please HELP!
Hi PDubs, Thank you for another great video. I am going to try to see if I can get the box art to work. By the way, will it work on Full Arcade1up cabinet as well with this hack? I would love to turn some of the Arcade1up full cabinet with this hack. I guess not because no USB port. But can we used the MicroUSB port and added USB flash drive to it by using adaptor. Maybe Mystery Encode can made that happen so we can mod all the cabinet using the MicroUSB port for Flash drive stick by using USB adaptor by convert MicroUSB into USB A.
This is ONLY for either the Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, or Marvel Super Heroes Countercades - if you try to install these on anything else you will destroy your Arcade1up cabinet.
Have you tried a USB hub on the USB port so you could plug in both the Flash drive and a linux compatible USB WiFi dongle? Batocera has built in WiFi drivers for the most common devices so it SHOULD work unless they put out effort to remove the WiFi drivers that were already there
Oh man very cool but alas my hopes got destroyed when I realized my ms pacman wont be hackable. Any word on the old 2 button countercades getting a build later? Great video. Very clear and concise! :)
Thanks for the video. I have the Marvel Superheroes countercade and followed your video and got it going! Has anyone else noticed that the usb port doesn't stay seated very well when plugging / unplugging usb sticks? It will basically pop out of the slot and ill have to unscrew the screws to open the panel to place it back on. At first I was in absolute horror thinking I snapped the usb port and it fell inwards, however, luckily it will go back on to the post and it still works fine with a usb drive plugged in; just a PIA as it can easily fall back in if using too much force re-plugging...
I’m finally getting around to doing this mod on my Marvel Super Heroes Countercade. Quick question, I doubt you’ll answer since I’m so late to the party on this one. I’m looking for a particular arcade game, Spider-Man: The Video Game. Any idea if that game is on this build? I’ve been looking everywhere and it’s never part of any rom set. Thanks for your time and helpful video.
I wonder if you can use a 2-1 usb connector to have a separate controller and still be able to load the front end? I have the nba jam one and basically can only play older games with 2 buttons maximum.
It works. I bought a 4-1 usb hub on Amazon for 17 bucks. Put the thumb drive in the first port and a usb ps2 controller and it worked. I wanted to test it before buying a USB arcade controller that cost $50. It did not work with a ps4 controller though. That was the first one I tried.
I unplugged from the wall, Put in safe mode Connected to the usb and the cabinet turned on I made sure that the the power was off. I stopped the mod not knowing if that was normal and safe to do the mod.
I bought one of the Marvel Super Hero countercades to try this out. Followed the directions on the mystery encoder website and readme file to the letter, but each time I error out on the first step. I used 4 different micro USB cables, 8 different ports on 2 separate computers, but no dice :(
@@cjcin23 you can go into the menu and then ui settings (or sound, one of those) and turn off sounf]d in the main menu. Also if you go into a game and out the menu vol control will start working, but resets to max vol after restart, so i turned mine off.
When I hook up the countercade to my PC with the USB it still turns on even though I shut off the toggle switch. Can't get step 2 to work. It stays in gray and not optional. So where do I go from here?
Plug your USB cable into a USB 2.0 port on your PC and if that doesn't work try a different USB cable in a 2.0 port...if it powers on the device it's OK to move on to the next step if the button is available

Great video. I knew it looked to easy. I am stuck after install driver. Says it doesn’t detect then I replug usb in. Now it detects but says incorrect driver, try install again. Install again it continues the same loop over again. If anyone else had this happen, any solutions.
Looking forward to trying this on my Marvel Countercade. Has anyone who has tried this attempted to use a USB hub to connect the thumb drive and a usb controller at same time? This might be a workaround for getting an extra button to map as the hotkey
step 2 doesn't come up. I'm running windows on bootcamp..tried several cables some cables make it power up.some cables just say this usb device isn't recognized .
Hmm, so I followed all the steps but when I get into Bactocera there are only like 7 or 8 systems listed and it’s missing MAME even though the folder is there with ROMs.
Once you drop some ROMS in the other folders, they will appear in the UI. If there are no games in the folder, then that emulator doesn't show up on the system
@@shootermcgavin1208 either should work. But if your ROMs aren't working Google Mame 2003 0.78 Romset and use those in either the Mame or FB Neo Folder..those are the ones I had the most success with

Hi PDUBS. Do I need a specific micro USB to USB to hook from PC to countercade , or can I use the one that come with my phone or other electronics to charge? Thank you.
Those running Batocera on an NBA Jam Countercade, how are you configuring buttons. I'm thinking of setting it up for one player only and using the right side buttons for Start and Select ad assigning the Player.1 Start button as Y.
Do you recommend buying the nba jam countercade and doing this mod or no bc of the limited buttons available compared to the others. Reason I ask is this one is still $99 on Amazon 😉. Thanks!
@@PDubsArcadeLoft now I’m wondering how tough it would be to put the guts of the countercade into a regular size Arcade1Up cabinet, obviously with a larger monitor…
If Batocera is on the stick, couldn’t we run skraper on our PC and place the images where they belong on the stick? I do that with AetherSX2 on my Xbox. Looking forward to CPS1/2 and Neo Geo games on it.
I accidentally purchased one of those mini USB sticks in preparation for this--you mention not to use those. I've set it up, and it works fine--should I get a standard stick? Thanks, and thanks for these awesome videos!

I'm having the same problems. Used a few different micro USB cables and different ports to see if that would be the problem, but it didn't change anything
Either the Toggle Switch isn't seated correctly to Off or you need to find a different USB to MicroUSB cable. Usually older cables that are data transfer only people have success with.

I got this set up, but I can't seem to find the ROMS I downloaded (I've never done anything like this before). I downloaded some arcade games from Rom Hustler and dragged them into the MAME folder. When I turn on the machine, there is no MAME option still. I tried other folders, like NES (because that shows up), and that didn't work either. I also tried opening the contents of a game folder and dragging it into the main folder...also no luck. Any suggestions? I know I'm messing something up. Maybe I downloaded something incorrectly? Thank you
I have the NBA Jam countercade, I downloaded the ZIP for the correct unit, but when I try to connect to the PCB, I get this message: "Waiting for driver install to exit before continuing.... if PCB is not detected and the other options are not automatically enabled, please disconnect and reconnect the USB cable." I've tried to disconnect the USB several times and it still stays the same. BTW, The NBA Jam game boots up automatically (and is playable) when plugged into the microusb port (Even though the "on/off" switch on the controller board is turned off) Is that normal? Any help is welcome. Thanks for the well worded video, I hope I can get mine rolling.
@@PDubsArcadeLoft Thanks so much for the tip. I used the charging cable from my gaming headset, and the transfer completed as it should within seconds. I loaded up several NES and MAME ROMS, and it’s working pretty well. A few games I had to load a few times before they would play. It seems like it’s going to take a little bit of tweaking, but it’s been fun. Vertical MAME games are definitely not optimized for this screen, as it cut off the top and bottom. I’m sure there’s a setting in retroarch to resize the screen, I just gotta figure it out.

I have already tried three different cables with no luck.
If that MicroUSB port is OTG maybe that Flashdrive can go inside with an adapter as with those Classic mini versions to have an extra USB port, not sure if that will work, can you check :) ?
does the usb stick need to be formatted? i have a mod from a different console on it and i’m just wondering if it would affect the hack on the countercade.
Just follow the same steps for mapping P1 - hit Start, Controller Settings, Set up controller and hold down one of the player 2 buttons to start mapping P2
Did they add 6 button configurations? Ive got 3 countercades. The mk one, the nba jam one and the marvel one. Played them all a bit and they were all perfect. However, when I turn the cab on with USB, it only starts the default system. Can't seem to figure out how to get the cab to boot from the USB. Retried the steps in the video with two cables (a razer cable (which I used to get the program running initially, PlayStation vr cable, and a random cable I found), two different pcs (windows 10), and two usbs (8 gb NFTS and exFAT). Looked on discord and the best answer I could find is that an unclean shutdown is in use. I wonder if shutting down it down improperly broke the drive and I wont be able to mod it anymore.

Have to use a data only cable, if you have an Amazon fire stick the cable that comes with that should work
@@PDubsArcadeLoft I'll give it a try, right after I find another cabinet since I destroyed the other two. JK of course.
Awesomeness! Great video! Cant wait to do this over the weekend!
Enjoy brother!

The unit needs to be off when it's plugged into PC, if it's off you're good
Tyrol feel ur pain, it turns the cabinet on when u plug usb in. This must be fake video
Quick question !! Quick question!!! Can we put all neogeo and SNK roms?
Up to you
Thinking I'll put everything on my Marvel Countercade and probably hand select the best NES/early Genesis sports titles to load up on my nephew's NBA Jam countercade with the 3 buttons.
FYI, mapping the extra two buttons to L1 and R1 will generally cause Retroarch to map them as the fifth and sixth buttons in six-button arcade games.
Correct - but - what are you going to map as your Hot Key? You only have 7 buttons
@@FormulaFox already tested that before I made the video - you cannot map P2 buttons at all for P1
@@PDubsArcadeLoft I didn't say anything about mapping it to P1. I said mapping it to HOTKEY.
@@FormulaFox it won't work - I tested and none of the Player 2 buttons can be mapped to the Player 1 Hot Key.
Interested in performing this! Any word on if a fix to play 6 button games has been implemented since?
Thanks Dude!
To mod the big ones you basically turn it into a raspberry pi. You can connect anything to it at that point as you’ll have 4 USB ports in the box you use. You can’t do it this way on the big one.

@@PDubsArcadeLoft Hello, I got help from the Discord page. Thanks! It was that I needed Windows 10. Thanks for the great videos!
Batocera has built in WiFi drivers for the most common devices so it SHOULD work unless they put out effort to remove the WiFi drivers that were already there
Nope haven't tried.
Oh man very cool but alas my hopes got destroyed when I realized my ms pacman wont be hackable. Any word on the old 2 button countercades getting a build later? Great video. Very clear and concise! :)
No word on the older Countercades
Thanks for the video. I have the Marvel Superheroes countercade and followed your video and got it going!
Has anyone else noticed that the usb port doesn't stay seated very well when plugging / unplugging usb sticks? It will basically pop out of the slot and ill have to unscrew the screws to open the panel to place it back on. At first I was in absolute horror thinking I snapped the usb port and it fell inwards, however, luckily it will go back on to the post and it still works fine with a usb drive plugged in; just a PIA as it can easily fall back in if using too much force re-plugging...
Would love a link to download that entire folder of roms you have transferred in this video!
lol just google mame 2003 0.78 rom set
Thanks so much for this! Does this overwrite the original programming? Can i switch between the USB and the original games?
Unplug the USB and turn it on and it goes back to stock
@@PDubsArcadeLoft awesome thanks so much!
I wonder why they put usb slot in some of these Arcade1ups to begin with. Besides outrun, we haven't seen any easter eggs.
To add or use a separate USB controller
I’m finally getting around to doing this mod on my Marvel Super Heroes Countercade. Quick question, I doubt you’ll answer since I’m so late to the party on this one. I’m looking for a particular arcade game, Spider-Man: The Video Game. Any idea if that game is on this build? I’ve been looking everywhere and it’s never part of any rom set. Thanks for your time and helpful video.
I wonder if you can use a 2-1 usb connector to have a separate controller and still be able to load the front end? I have the nba jam one and basically can only play older games with 2 buttons maximum.
Worth a shot - it won't hurt anything - let me know how it goes!
Awesome video, thanks man. I have a marvel super hero’s cabinet so I think I’m gonna have to do this!
Boom baby
I unplugged from the wall,
Put in safe mode
Connected to the usb and the cabinet turned on
I made sure that the the power was off.
I stopped the mod not knowing if that was normal and safe to do the mod.
I followed the fist steps just as shown
Need to try a different USB cable that is Data Only, No Power.
