hate to say it but you're not missing much there's a reason why the creator has rebooted it twice and had to remake the ending of the original the characters are built very well but not in a way that makes you care about them; and in a way that was kinda the point. its better than berserk but still has the same level of needless suffering that doesn't serve an ultimate point. a trope that i hope anime does away with soon.
like there's an odd amount of japanese people who read the bible and thought it had cool imagery but didn't take any of the morals or conflated some with others; that imagery taken to a new medium where most of its consumer base hasn't read the bible sees the subject matter as revolutionary when really its just another grey morality deconstructionist work just watch gunbuster instead
