See 10:25 and 15:55 onwards for three of his double leg takedowns. He took serious damage around 10:30 and spammed illegal takedowns as clinch substitutes to avoid further damage.

A bit of ineffectual ground and pound beats a knock down and solid calf kicks? Seems off.
Think you need to look at your takedown rules too. If a guy can literally do nothing but stay out of range before diving at someone's leg to do a 'not really' single leg takedown, land ground and pound, reset, rinse and repeat, you're going to create a very very dull meta. Should only be able to do that off a caught kick.

  • @Bobo1031able
    @Bobo1031able Год назад +65

I think it's against the original concept of Karate Combat that if a fighter came into a fight with his first priority being initiating takedowns.
I mean, the whole point of Karate Combat Rules allowing takedowns and 5-second ground working time is to provide fighters more choices and make the fight process more fluid so that when the fight inevitably get into the clinch situation(like what we usually saw in a boxing or kickboxing match, when two fighters got tangled up, they have to either do nothing and wait for the referee to separate them or start making some not-so-clean moves which are hard to tell should be counted as significant points or not), fighters can keep the fight in their hands and show more well-rounded skills, and that leads to more beautiful fights.
Hence clinch takedowns(including catch-a-strike then takedowns such as kick catch with sweeps) should count more, while shooting from outside for takedowns should never be rewarded as much.
As in this fight, Egars may not be going for double-legs, but he's definitely shooting from outside. It should be seen as being passive instead of being effective. That being said, It really requires highly well educated judges that truly understand key aspects of combat sports.
Sadly the outcome of this fight went this way, not just for Gabriel Varga, who I think got robbed, but for the rising, expanding organization Karate Combat as well. Like I said, damage to its original concept which is exactly what makes it unique and beautiful.

I think one issue that needs to be addressed immediately is referee training. Seems like they got some ‘B’ list refs in this event. My guess would be that was due to the UFC event in Jacksonville on the same day. I think that a ref like say Mark Goddard or some other more established ref that had several of these events under their belt would have done a better job controlling the takedown abuse. It’s important to remember that KC writes the ruleset, and that the Athletic Commission has to enforce it. So problems can come from either the definition or application of the rules. But I am in total agreement that Skrivers was allowed to play outside of what most understand the rules to be, and made what should’ve been a barn burner a total nothingburger, culminating in a very questionable 4th round decision.

Varga dropped Skrivers at 15:35 with a stiff right hand in the fourth which was the most impactful strike in the fight. It should never have gone to four and even then, Varga won the fourth. After reviewing the rules, the last 2 takedowns from Skrivers were 100% illegal and so them and their ground and pound after should NOT have scored at all.
    The fourth round comprised of:
2 arguably legal takedowns where Varga hit Skrivers more during them, with the first he landed more punches, in the second he kicked him in the head from the bottom position while taking nothing in return.
Pretty much equal calf kicks (Varga landed more, Skrivers landed one stronger one)
A full on knockdown causing a bleeding wound from Varga to Skrivers
2 illegal double leg takedowns leading to some ground and pound - should have been disregarded as coming from illegal techniques.
The judges need to learn the rules better. The rules need to be better communicated. At the time I thought Varga may have lost the round, but after looking at the rules it's impossible to conclude Skrivers won that.

I see a lot of people used the excuse of "Karate has grappling" and similar ones.
See it this way: SUMO has takedowns and strikings, but it has RULES. If you break that rules, you lose. If your takedowns have your hand or knee touching the ground, you lose. If your striking use fist instead of palm, you lose. Illegal techniques are banned and lead to instant lost and possibly career-ending. These don't make sumo a lesser art than MMA, wrestling, muay thai, etc. These makes sumo sumo.
You can say the same with Olympic judo, a lot of traditional judo takedowns are illegal there. Or muay thai, only specific takedowns are allowed there.
So what's with "karate has grappling" that excuses illegal techniques? Karate has eye pokes, groin strikes, etc, so should we see those techniques in tournament too, who cares if they're illegal or not?

Is the act of a takedown in or of itself the goal, or is the goal the result from the position it presents, and the resultant strikes to the grounded opponent? Where should the scoring be focused towards? This was an excercise in getting beaten in the standup versus takedowns with ineffectual outcomes.

The Okinawan dojos from pre 1900s placed much emphasis on both the throwing and takedown aspects for their Tote Jutsu or the old version of Karate since it had historic roots in Tegumi or the traditional wrestling art from Okinawa. They did not just practice the striking methods from various imported forms of Chinese arts. Old Karate was meant to be an eclectic system of striking and grappling before it got exported to mainland Japan and turn into a striking art around 1905. To be able to defend yourself, it is crucial to know various ranges of combat. It is not inaccurate to have good wrestling skills like George St Pierre Thanks a lot for making lots of confusion regarding the history of Okinawan traditional arts just like that dense and outdated idea that old school Judo somehow did not have ground techniques.

    Clinch strikes should be legal.
    Hook kicks should be legal.
Open hand strikes should be legal.
Finger strikes should be legal barring eye or throat strikes.
