To many of us, China looms large and scary. At least that's a view from the outside looking in. But what do China's own people think about their country? We visit the old capital of Nanjing to hear their stories.
China is in flux yet again. For years the path to prosperity here seemed clear, with more freedom on the way as well. Yet nobody saw President Xi Jinping coming. Xi Jinping has taken a sword to the political elite, smashed dissent and the economy is heading in a completely new direction, with tech companies growing rapidly. "Fifteen years ago not a single Chinese company could have developed a mobile phone", explains Wang Jipeng, a software entrepreneur whose company has grown from 10 to 2000 staff in the last ten years. Not everyone is happy though: house prices are rising, and many have become victims of development officials who force residents into leaving. The President's anti-corruption drive is another source of controversy, and the use of interrogation or 'shuang gui' has been described as a "breach of human rights" by a former state prosecutor. Meanwhile, an environmental activist explains the improvements made in reducing pollution: "We're in a better position now when compared to the past. We've had many successful experiences regulating factories." Despite youthful optimism however, air pollution still remains an unrelenting pressure. A snapshot of China and its people's experiences, who live on the brink of uncertainty.

"President Xi has done a lot for the country, like cracking down on corruption, and reigning in wasted spending..." Since when have these two become something worth praising as noble deeds of a president? I mean, aren't they basic responsibility of a head of state?

Template for a documentary on China:
Start with how great things have come.
Say now actually it's pretty horrible.
    Mention communist dictators.
    Mention no freedom.
Say although millions of people were lifted out of poverty, there's a lot of pollution (but never mention so does India).
Say now this is all so unsustainable, how a non-democratic system can't resolve these problems, how China is doomed.
Then come back in 10 years, reflect on the tremendous progress, and do that again.

+David Min western media always reports the worst things about both our nations, without looking at how far we've come after being independant. There is not a single positive documentary about India despite all the development and innovation that is happening here. They only report about rape, pollution or caste. They don't report that most Indian youth are tired of caste and are intermarrying now. They don't report that corruption has gone down a LOT since the 1980s. They don't report about the innovations that Indian engineering students are making. All the while in western countries, school shootings, racist murders by police, and more pollution takes place. I guess they feel a burn in the ass when non white people are progressing.

    • @meh4770

+David Min That's all you can say in the documentary format. It's a narrative that repeats itself and every original story becomes proof of a preconception. These documentaries are supposed to be a salve for Western audiences that fear their decline in global relevance ('China may be growing much faster than my country...but its polluted and corrupt'). Also, a large government is automatically tyrannical for most people in the West...our understanding of freedom is quite extreme. Basically, without speaking the language and visiting a place yourself, you are forced to repeat old narratives that have become familiar.

+Gunnet Sha moving forward to a greater uncertainty because of the leadership is rather volatile and a stable society is hard to come by, ask yourself why you choose to leave Nanjing, ask all of those who left, who chose Sweden/Switzerland/Australia/Denmark/United States/Finland/Norway/Canada/Luxembourg/Netherlands/ OVER China.... There's no debate here, AND YOU KNOW IT. The fundamental risk lies with the governance structure, and any Chinese with a bit of education who can think independently can see the obvious and the inevitable.

+Chris Christie I agree with you in many aspects. But it takes TIME to make a change.
If the illiterate ones become literate, economical growth can be achieved without pollution and unemployment as soon as China becomes a democratic country, I will definitely support it. But it is not gonna happen!
When looking back, one can find how amazing it is to see the development of China for the past two decades considering China's great population. More importantly, most of the cities are very safe! Young girls can go out alone even after midnight. Will you go out alone in Stockholm?
Comparing to the political situation in China, I am more worried about that in Europe. Muslims have a much higher birth rate than the native British, French, Dutch and Scandinavian. There is a Muslim party proposed to use sharia in Brussels (over 25% of its population are Muslims). Either the culture of philanthropy or the so-called democracy will be destroyed in the next 50 years.

+Chris Christie I've lived in Europe for the last 15 years, in several countries. What I can tell is: most western countries today still offers more easy, simple lives, clean environment, acess to free education, medical care, social security, media accessibility, ect, still way ahead of China. I have several family members living in US, they share the same view.
However, China is not standing still, it's improving dramatically, we can say and do much more than we used to, only time will bring it all. I believe soon it will be quite acceptable for those who used to live in western lands.
However, western countries (Europe and US) have been moving backwards ever since! I cannot help to witness the poverty escalation in Europe and US. Here in Belgium, Jihadists walking around with benefits money from the state, IS members have atterneys to protect them on COURT! I don't know if governments in Europe and US are protecting anyone. Deflation, banks failing meeting any target, the whole continent is failing to make money while expenses and debts are piling up! Individuales purchasing power drops like roller coasters. At this moment, only few EU countries still have OWN money, countries like Belgium is already completely living on loans! Don't even have to mention US.
I mean, yes, I feel more freedom, more respect between people, better education, blue sky and green gras, rainbows and butterflies... But eventually when you are penniless, when your kids are in poverty, there ain't no more, no? And we all know no one is going to stop it...
China is not ideal yet, but it is gaining advantage and moving fast; Western countries' advantages are fading rather faster...
Most Chinese people I knew from here before have already moved back, me and my families have plans to move back too. I love Europe, but I cannot help to see its failing, and I certainly cannot help it.
Knowing where you are is important, knowing where are are heading is more.

I am lazy, direct Google Translation
I grew up living in Nanjing, saw the film, from beginning to end all heavy dark side, but I was surrounded by really so dark it? Every society has problems large and small. Role Qinhuai Xuanwu Lake pollution problem the government did not see? Childhood Qinhuai River sewers to a drainage ditch, now? Clear water and blue sky backward. Haze problem, the surrounding plants are gradually migrated, you make an investment of tens of billions of the steel plant were evacuated overnight, possible? That people who work in the factory how do you have thought about it? Urban expansion in the development process, the demolition has always been a contradiction that there will be more problems, the government disposal of the people want to take the natural, because to take into account equality, you get more, that I had signed an agreement to move people go to them unfair, Nanjing on the demolition households annually riots if the government would not do well? Does the local government will be shooting itself in the foot? Demolition recent years has gradually become the norm. I just want to say, although many of our problems, but we live in the past more than two decades is better than ever not change, do not necessary because some of these issues negate the whole social system.

St.Clair Bij China's rising is a great event in 21st century, together with India's rising, East Asia countries should weaken the White people's 300-years-dominance in world. That's why Western propaganda is so eager to demonize China's human rights and any news etc.Today China still have many drawbacks on human rights, free expression, officials corruptions and democracy etc, but things get improve gradually. Today some people objectively expose those drawbacks in China and want China to change for good. But other vicious people expect China's economic collapse and take advantage of those drawbacks to meet the notorious appetite of western audience which do not want China's rising to challenge their supremacy and compete on their productions.

In 2015 the annual per capital GDP of China is only 8,000 USD and the Total GDP of China is 11 trillion USD for its 1.36 billion population. So China still is a developing country and should maintain a 5%-7% sustainable y-o-y GDP growth rate in coming 10-20 years. Now the income gap among the peasants, citizens and officials is huge. So China's economy should take at least 9-15 years to reach per capital GDP 20,000 USD which is the threshold of developed country. China still have a long way to be the No.1 economic entity and distribute the income more fairly among different people in different tiers.

I wouldn't call it propaganda, but it's definitely biased. From what I heard and what my family member experienced, the compensation is usually higher than what's in the market. For those houses with illegal constructions (e.g. three-storage house which only has permission of two), of course, you are not getting paid for the 'extra'.
I am only speaking from my own experience and what I've heard from my family memebers and I have been living outside China for 18 years. Haters will hate no matter what. That's what they do. I am not trying to change your point. You can hold your opinion about China, that's fine. China will not stop developing/improving just because you have your "personal" view about it.

China was always an authoritative country even in the dynastic periods. China like Russia is a very regional country, once they have weak central leadership the country breaks apart. China was always better off having strong and controlled central rule.

Fisher Smith Democracy works in Taiwan due to it size and it is easier to maintain as a democratic country.
But for mainland China having an authoritarian regime is a better fit to maintain an orderly society in such a vast diverse area. China is like Russia both countries is so vast and regional they need strong central authority to keep control of the different regions. Each province in China is like a different country in language dialects and cultures.

Chef Ho Xao Lun I am already bored to listen this propaganda that China is too big to be suitable for democracy regime. To be honest, even you may do not trust this propaganda and you repeat it because you maybe be beneficial for authoritarian regime. But all Chinese from different tiers must break out of their small interests group and stand on historical altitude to discuss how to operate democracy regime smoothly in China in future. USA is a vast country and democracy regime work well in USA. In Europe,Russia,UK,Australia,Canada,Brazil,Japan,Korea and Taiwan, democracy regime work well. To say democracy regime can not work well in China is a insult for all Chinese IQ and intentionally underestimate Chinese capability of governance.

Chef Ho Xao Lun can it really last with the size of china though? the more globally connected the chinese people become with the rest of the world, the more they will want to have more freedoms (generally speaking). it seems like the government will be faced with having to grant more freedoms or (bad idea) become more cut off from the world to try to discourage a big uprising and if they do the latter then they will make it a self fulfilling prophecy and get a big uprising. still i can understand why china might be more likely to go along with bigger more centralized government considering your milleniums of history and your history of confucianism being the central core philosophy for the governance of a good and productive society.

I have a Xiao Mi phone. Like everything I've bought since I moved here, it began to malfunction slightly after a couple of weeks. After a couple of months, it goes black while using it. The only way to deal with that, is to pry the back off, which is not easy to do, using a key or a knife, to get to the battery. I remove the battery for a moment, and then I can start it up again. This sometimes happens all day long. After 8 months, I"m sometimes unable to turn it on, and sometimes unable to turn it off, or close it, without removing the battery. Try doing this on a public bus with 50 people on it:) My friend recommended this phone, and referred to it as "a good brand". Hilarious. Most people here buy I Phones, which costs them about 2 months salary.

China has almost the same percentage of global production as Japan did at their peak, but they have more citizens than Japan ever has. More citizens should logically translate to more production AND more social expense on the part of the Chinese. Time will tell what that leads to in practical terms.

For all fellow Chinese, it is to China's advantage that the people who are more inclined to their own socially-engineered biases, is to shun China and refuse to acknowledge its growth, largely focusing on its over-inflated problems, some of which are artificial. These are not the people you will be interested in nor currently interested in, these are the people that are slowly fading away along with the historic status quo, the obsoletes who will give you nothing.
The only people you want as your friends, the only people you want to view you in a positive light, are the analytical intelligent natural diplomats, the others would likely do more harm than good (e.g. natural affinity to ignoring problems until it grows beyond manageable proportion etc.).
The desire for wanting to be liked is natural and strong in all of us, but, after much consideration, I cannot see how such people's fondness would be beneficial, on the contrary, it would be destructive, think about it, and you may come to your own conclusion.

+刘治宏 the Chinese modern culture (influenced heavily by their political ideology) has a central idea: centralization. Individualism is not popular there, which causes cultural taboos, in fact, too many cultural taboos originating from the fact that you cannot deviate too much from the official value. In the West, individualism has developed gradually for some time, and therefore, people can think, do whatever they want as long as they don't break the law, nobody will judge you based on your personal values.

Communism is an unstoppable trend in the world of politics. Just check and see how the world is doing in their economy, most Capitalist States are doing terrible except the US (India? So far so good, but if you check out what their prime minister is doing you know they are another solid Communism state), while Communist States like China and Vietnam are doing great (RPK? I think they are having issue rn with its ideaology in Economy. But until 90's they were better than SK, so they will turn back eventually.). After decades of sluggish economy, people in the west will start to realize the ineffectiveness of traditional Capitalism. It's just a trend. While I also doubt there will be more pure Communist state in few decades, many will adopt a mix of Communism and Capitalism. Exp. Med care in US and in many Capitalist states and US's retrieving its factories back to US, that's more Communist than China.

***** china uncensored are delusional falun gong/falun dafa religious liberal wannabe-entrepreneurs. they believe in liberal-individualism from their silly buddhist-daoist syncretic religious ideology (both buddhism and daoism are more individualistic and superstitious beliefs that encourage or tacitly enable the ideals of liberal-capitalism), and want China to become an insane self-hating country like taiwan. they worship the Tang Dynasty which had a lot of daoist/buddhist emperors, and was a period that mahayana buddhism first became widespread in Chinese society after being transmitted from central asia via the silk road. in this case, the PRC are more like traditional Confucianists that are trying to build up Chinese (i.e., Confucian) civilization into what it once was in the past (e.g., during the Ming Dynasty), without going down the westernization or liberalization road. Confucianism has historically been a much more collectivist and civilizational ideology, compared to buddhism and daoism, and stresses rationality and secular "prosperity" (not necessarily wealth, but social/cultural/historical prosperity as well) instead of superstitious practices and individualistic nihilism.
check out Xi Jinping's advocacy of traditional Confucian ideas for the future of PRC/Chinese civilization: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moderately_prosperous_society
it lines up much closer with the way traditional China operated, and i applaud Xi Jinping for trying to revive the Confucian ideals and traditions in recent times.
the liberals and taiwanese/hong kong cantonese southern Chinese/falun gong always hate the Ming Dynasty because it was a strong Neo-Confucianist state that tried to uphold the ideals of the Confucian civilizational-society, including banning/cracking down on merchants and trade (since Confucianism frowns upon individual trade/merchants as being corrupting to the civilization, especially in terms of morals.) Ming Dynasty famously cracked down on Zheng He's maritime fleet due to some Confucian scholar-officials in the Ming government worrying about there being too much trade which was conducted on foreign diplomatic missions abroad. liberals and those that hate modern PRC always mention how it was such a "mistake" for the Ming Dynasty to dismantle Zheng He's fleet (e.g., "the Ming went downhill when they closed themselves off to the west/the outside world!!"); also, since southern China/hong kong/etc historically has had a lot of cantonese merchants and traders that wanted to engage in free-trade with the west, they tend to generally hate modern PRC for this as well.
here's the famous Tang Dynasty Confucian scholar, Han Yu, criticizing the spread of buddhism and taoism in Tang China, and the enabling of buddhism by the Tang Emperor of his time. nearly all those falun gong and hong kong/taiwanese hate Confucian scholars like Han Yu, just like how they hate modern PRC, because both want to build a civilizational-state. acc6.its.brooklyn.cuny.edu/~phalsall/texts/hanyu.html
