It takes the unfocused, rehashy, occasionally downright out of character moments in Karate Kid 3, and recontextualizes them to make you think about them in a different light. Instead of thinking about the movie as a studio-mandated remake of the original, with a bully, new technique, and tournament at the end, now we can think about it as an epic battle of psychological warfare, with Daniel and Mr. Miyagi going up against their fiercest enemy and overcoming, but not entirely defeating him. This allows Season 5 to put Daniel back into his darkest nightmares and show the other characters what they are really up against. It’s simple, Cobra Kai was made with love for the original, with fan enjoyment in mind. Star Wars Disney wanted to deconstruct the original story and take it away from the fans.
The first 4 Karate Kid movies and Cobra Kai took over my love for Star Wars, I used to love Star Wars but Disney made the franchise run out of steam, Force Awakens I was okay with, Last Jedi I was bored with and Rise of Skywalker made me give up while Cobra Kai found a way to make us love these old characters from the MiyagiVerse and giving us a new generation of characters we love as well, Disney needs to watch Cobra Kai
George Lucas even made sure to tie the prequels into the originals with the 'introduce new characters via the old characters' - the first 3 characters of note we see in Episode IV are Vader, R2D2, and C3P0. Characters that we know well if you watch the prequels before the originals (which is his intention).
Not quite related to the Star Wars comparison, but it's nice some critics who couldn't stand 'The Karate Kid Part 3', like Gene Siskel, agreed Thomas Ian Griffith's Terry Silver rocked
You're right, I never noticed some of these things. With prequels the appeal is how it happened, since we already know what happened. There was too much space between Return of the Jedi & the Force Awakens. Story wise. Personally I think Disney didn't do the Sequels justice. In Cobra Kai, the characters had the same traits. Even though some like Johnny and Chozen for example had a redemption arc. The Mentor is very important as well. I mean Obi Wan is one of my favorite characters of all time.
Cobra Kai is made with love, the new Star Wars movies aren't. They were just made as fast as possible to quickly make money. Disney didn't even plan out the new trilogy, which was a huge mistake. For example, JJ set up The Force Awakens in a certain direction, but Johnson reversed almost everything JJ set up because he didn't like where the story was going (which is incredibly dumb. We would think Disney wouldn't allow that since it would technically be moving the story backward, but this proves Disney doesn't care about quality, only money). Then, after backlash, Disney hired JJ again, which was another big mistake. Like the toddler JJ is (Ryan is too), he reversed everything Johnson did and took the story back in the direction he originally wanted it to go. Because of this, the Star Wars sequel trilogy felt like an expensive tug of war with one of the biggest film franchises to ever exist. And while doing so, they disrespected the original characters, storytelling, and world that George Lucas created. Cobra Kai is made with love and respects the original characters and stories while also focusing on a new generation of characters. That is why it is such a successful and popular show. People aren't going to watch the original characters they love be disrespected and disregarded over new characters. If people are going to revisit a classic franchise, it'll be for the original characters. Not the new. It's kind of common sense. Also, I'll never forgive Johnson for what he did to Admiral Ackbar. Smh.
I agree!!! I have watched Cobra kai all seasons many times. & it makes so much sense if i watch karate kid movies again as well. There is a continuity of everything. When i watch cobra kai then rewatch karate kid, i noticed how rich the story has become. I love it. & when i watch cobra kai, i catch myself saying, hey... this character did this in karate kid movie
Turn Star Wars over entirely to Favreau. Get rid of basically everyone else who isnt on his team. Retcon Kathleen's absurd garbage that no real fan considers canon. Done.
Cobra Kai is an absolute masterclass in how you take a cherished film series and make it appeal to a new generation. Best thing I've ever watched. Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Rings of Power, Marvel etc could learn a lot. The problem is, the arrogance of the creators in charge of these fan-baiting monstrosities blinds them from learning anything other than failure. They say insanity is defined by doing exactly the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result...
@@KenCole I agree with you 100% ... yet I am still thankful to the OT Cast for giving their best performances, they gave us memorable moments and scenes despite the missed keys ...like the ones in this video I made...watch and let me know what you think when you have free time. ruclips.net/video/0_Sr8wiru0Q/видео.html
Honestly I’ve felt for a while now that, when it came to completing the Skywalker saga, Disney should have just picked out the best of the EU and turned it into a Cobra Kai style series. The need to have a new movie trilogy for “prestige” purposes blinded them to what was actually required to give the original characters AND the next generation their proper due. Contrast this with John Josh and Hayden, who, even though they originally envisioned their story as a movie, were willing to switch mediums once it became apparent it was in the best interest of the characters. You couldn’t really jam a satisfying story for all of them in a 2 hour film. Or even a trilogy of 2 hour films.
Karate Kid 3 did help provide the link between Karate Kid series and Daniels Marriage to Amanda. Btw I have a suggestion make Mike Barnes Tory's father!!!
Great points and comparisons! If there was an 8th lesson, the Star Wars fans don't need to be bombarded with the political and social agendas. Cobra Kai focuses on the story. It recognizes that there are differences between the generations, but it doesn't say either is right or wrong. "The Last Jedi" made me cringe.
@@Supremmo Oh. In "The Last Jedi" part of the weak story line was this 1/2 hour wasted on a plan that didn't even work. Seemed the only point was to stress that animal cruelty is wrong. Then, all the male heroes made terrible plans that failed and even cost lives and the movie stressed how important it is to listen to the women...In itself doesn't seem terrible, but it seemed so deliberate it took away from the story.
Excellent stuff. Been saying a lot of this from the start with Cobra Kai season 1. As a lifelong Star Wars and Karate Kid fan, Cobra Kai has done a much better job than the ST. It reminds me much more of the original SW Expanded Universe content that also continued the story of the originals in a much better way with the classic characters becoming leaders and mentors to the next generation while still evolving themselves.
Nailed so many things. And really nailed it when they brought so many of the original cast back but didn’t give them an on screen reunion moment which- if done w care- would have made the fans look f the original so happy.
I've been a star wars fan most of my life and the karate kid franchise and cobra Kai tv series There is a new star wars t.v. series called Andor is coming out soon
With Cobra KI you remember the old sayings. Or lessons. You see the that interaction with other characters. You feel apart of that universe. Have not enjoyed a Star Wars movie since Revenge of the Jedi
Star Wars is on life support and is only hanging on barely. Because of what Disney did with the sequels, Kenobi, and Book of Boba Fett, it will never be as glorious as it once was. Cobra Kai is now king in all this
The answer is obvious. Cobra Kai was made by true Karate Kid fans, Star Wars sequel trilogy on the other hand was made by money grabbing corrupt filmmakers. One other answer is that Cobra Kai was never focused too much on new characters, but it was focused on the originals more. SW sequel trilogy was heavily focused on a chick nobody can and will relate to. They were focused on Rey so much, they killed off the original characters to give her even more room.
Brilliant video, as I consider myself more of a new fan of cobra Kai (as I’m 20 and obviously wasn’t around during the 80s but absolutely LOVE the whole karate kid series when I first saw it as a kid) the similarities between Star Wars and The karate kid has ALWAYS been there I mean it’s so Apparent with even cobra kai having a few Star Wars reference (both 80s movies too obviously) as someone who was very disappointed with 7-9, new Star Wars has ALOTTTTTT they could learn from cobra kai, and IMAGINE telling someone 20 years ago that “The karate kid movies” Tv sequel would outshine the Star Wars one In almost every aspect of storytelling 😂😅🤔 new season of cobra Kai is also amazing with the legacy characters returning like Mike and Terry and feeling EXACTLY like they did in the movies (kreese, Johnny Daniel and Chozen are also perfect examples) And even managing to build a LIKEABLE NEW CAST, With great characters like MIGUEL,robbie,Kenny,Hawk,Sam,tori etc. It’s truly amazing What franchises can achieve with the proper writing and creatives behind it (Cobra Kai’s Writers have SO much respect for the Movies) the NEXT STEP is to either give the cobra Kai writers a STAR WARS MOVIE, OR for the Karate to start becoming lightsaber fights then it’s perfect 😅
No don’t you dare say that. Sato is not comparable to Darth Vader, it makes sense that Miyagi is Kenobi and Danial is Anakin, cause danial got manipulated and turned to the dark (joining cobra Kai) and then got turned back
Starblazers, Robotech, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Voltron. I wish some sort of the villains of each respective universe and the heroes could align. I hope George Lucas and any other directors who are sci-fi fanatics if u came up with scenario of how this can go down because u have this channel and it would be nice to see how many u would get if other space geeks would respond.
The main reason is that Cobra Kai is made by true karate kid fans, while disney only bought star wars ad a cash grab with no passion what so ever for the franshise
Im kinda hoping they dont overdo the Karate Kid franchise like Disney has done with Star Wars with so many spinoff shows movies etc. Thats also what kinda ruined Star Wars, they milked it too much.
Lesson 8: Don't contradict or break existing lore & canon. Expand on it absolutely but it must fit with what came before. eg Rey's healing powers sure could have saved Qui-gon in TPM or the Holdo manoeuvre breaking Star Wars space battles which JJ had to rightfully retcon although he did it very poorly. Not another lesson but a recommendation - Don't be antagonistic to fans: LucasFilm staff like Pable Hidalgo making fun of one of the biggest Star Wars RUclipsrs out there for having a emotional reaction to Luke returning The Mandalorian was not a good look, Andi Gutierrez's now infamous "Fan Boy Tears" mug or KK's "there's no source material comment". Lesson 5 is a interesting one for Star Wars. It's true that the sequels totally ignored the prequels and the sequels ignored them at their detriment because there was an absolute gold mine of content there. But for future Star Wars projects going forward some will have to deal with the terrible sequel movies but there's so little there to mine because it was mostly a worse rehash of the original trilogy with not much new stuff. Current LucasFilm projects apart from some books and comics mostly ignore the sequels while the books and comics that do tackle them are even worse than the sequel movies themselves. LucasFilm really dug a massive hole. The other thing, shows like The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi have made similar mistakes as the sequel movies with lesson 3 so LucasFilm hasn't really learnt much. Obi-Wan, like Jake, turned his back on the force, Boba Fett changed from the legendary bounty hunter to a crime lord that doesn't do any crime. Current LucasFilm's use of legacy characters has been terrible. Even Vader in Obi-Wan didn't escape some poor treatment.
I don't think we always have to focus on the old characters first to introduce the new characters and I think something like the Creed movies are great examples of doing the opposite, for in the first movie we are introduce to Adonis way before we are reintroduced to Rocky, but they made Adonis compelling enough character that we weren't annoyed that we got to see Rocky in either 30 to 40 minutes into the movie. To me, all they had to do was just make the new characters interesting in there own right regardless of how they are introduce.
Ah, but we're introduced to Adonis through legacy character Mary Anne Creed, widow of Apollo Creed (who watched him die in the ring). In fact, she raises him as her own, and the character of Adonis is so compelling because of his strong family connection to both Mary Anne and Apollo. His family history (as seen in the Rocky movies) drives the story and all relationships going forward.
@@KenCole That is actually a good point because it almost slip my mind, but I guess what I was trying to say was that when you said they need focus on the old characters first, it's basically sounds like you're saying they should be the main characters which is exactly what Cobra Kai did, and not that I'm complaining about that. Even though we are introduced to Adonis through Mary Anne, Adonis is still the main character, and not her or Rocky, but given the fact that he is related to a legacy character, it does make sense in that aspect.
@@DarkHeroesForever That's a good point - I don't think the classic characters have to be the main characters for the entire new story, but they at least need to frame the story, provide context for, and have a relationship with the new characters. And if they're still the main characters, that can be a bonus as well.
hi ken Obi Wan kenobi was a great Mentor to Luke Skywalker teaching him the ways of the force in the other Star Wars Sequels Luke feels that he blams himself for Ben Solo Kylo Ren turning to the dark side and he does not want to Teach the force to any one anymore not to Rey but Rey is a quick learner she learns the ways of the force
I would like to partly disagree with lessons 3 and 4. It is entirely possible to have classic characters become supporting characters that we don't get to meet in the story for some time without making a story less good. Granted, it's not a movie series that is being made relevant again, but take as an example the Tortall Universe that Tamora Pierce has been writing since the 80s. In the first series of books set in this universe, we're introduced to Alanna "The Lioness" of Pirate's Swoop and Olau, we follow her as she grows up and trains to become a knight, and we see her interact with a great many characters. In the next series in this universe, Alanna doesn't make an appearance until several chapters into the first book, and her part in the events of the story is much smaller than it was in the first series. She isn't used to introduce the new characters, rather the new characters are introduced to her. The same applies to many of the returning characters from the first series. And in the third series, the focus shifts to a third set of characters, and characters from the first two series don't immediately make appearances to introduce this third set. This pattern holds through six series set in this universe, and one of the six is set 100 years before the rest. Yet new installments are generally well received and each series is still able to keep existing fans happy, while offering a worthy story for possible new fans. So no, classic characters don't need to be front and center and a springboard for introducing new characters. They can, but they don't need to.
Thank you for your great comment! That is a very good point. Perhaps these lessons might best fit legacy/revival sequels that are made decades after the original.
@@KenCole here's more food for thought with regard to Tamora Pierce's Tortall books: the first series was published between 1983 and 1988. The second, 1992-1996. Third, 1999-2002. Fourth, 2003-2004(only two books, but the total word count is about the same as the previous series). Fifth, a prequel to the previous 4, from 2006 to 2011(3 books, if anything even more story than ever). Currently, she's publishing a sixth series in the universe, only one book is out so far. That one is 2018. In addition to the universe I've mentioned so far, she has another universe, with quite a few stories in it too. That she has been publishing alongside this one.
@@ashleylentz2651 I think one of the great things in this example is that it's the same author that's in charge of all of these series. I think where movie/TV legacy sequels can get into trouble is when new creators are in charge and the originators aren't a part of the process.
@@KenCole not denying that one. The original creator not being involved is very much a misstep on the part of Disney. The only way this can be excused is if the original creator is keeping Jesus and His pop company.

George Lucas even made sure to tie the prequels into the originals with the 'introduce new characters via the old characters' - the first 3 characters of note we see in Episode IV are Vader, R2D2, and C3P0. Characters that we know well if you watch the prequels before the originals (which is his intention).
Love it mate! 👊🏻👊🏻 the crossover we never knew we needed! Shame the Sequels didn't follow Cobra Kais suit
Not quite related to the Star Wars comparison, but it's nice some critics who couldn't stand 'The Karate Kid Part 3', like Gene Siskel, agreed Thomas Ian Griffith's Terry Silver rocked
I 100% agree. TIG was phenomenal.
Disney needs to hire you to write for them
Thank you, you're very kind 😀
You're right, I never noticed some of these things. With prequels the appeal is how it happened, since we already know what happened. There was too much space between Return of the Jedi & the Force Awakens. Story wise. Personally I think Disney didn't do the Sequels justice.
In Cobra Kai, the characters had the same traits. Even though some like Johnny and Chozen for example had a redemption arc. The Mentor is very important as well. I mean Obi Wan is one of my favorite characters of all time.
Yes, the mentor is an essential element for sure. Always a great character!
Smh.
Great comment!
@@KenCole thank you! :D
We’ll said 👏👏 God I hope a team of Disney Execs watch this 😆
🙏
Very well said!
Fantastic video keep it up your doing amazing job
Thank you so much!
great video and in-depth analysis!
Much appreciated!
the anti-woke big 3 vs the woke emperors Kathleen Kennedy & Bob Chapek?!
never gonna happen but great display in contrast
Turn Star Wars over entirely to Favreau. Get rid of basically everyone else who isnt on his team. Retcon Kathleen's absurd garbage that no real fan considers canon. Done.
Great video on the 2 beloved franchises and the hero's journey.
Thank you!
Oh, I love it. I got in late from work and have to be back early tomorrow, but I'll definitely watch again and recommend. Excellent job, thanks!
Thank you!
such a great analysis, Ken!
Thanks so much!
Impressive, most impressive
The force is strong with you! Amazing analysis
Thank you very much!
@@KenCole So you think the sequels were all bad or was there something that was worth seeing?
@@japtakito8551 I think there was a lot of talent involved and they were entertaining, but as SW movies I thought they missed key ingredients.
@@KenCole I agree with you 100% ... yet I am still thankful to the OT Cast for giving their best performances, they gave us memorable moments and scenes despite the missed keys ...like the ones in this video I made...watch and let me know what you think when you have free time.

great video
Thanks!
Cobra Kai is enjoyable for me because it brings back the old casts and introduces to the new generation Karate Kid movies by rehashing the past
great video. this season of cobra kai was crazy. many epic battles.
Thanks!
Luke in episode 8 reminds me of his brother Frank Gallagher....
This is a great thought! Maybe they're trying to make up for it now.
The moral lessons it tries to teach the audience, "Make air stink!" Lol
Hmmmmm? I really didn’t see politics and social agenda. I just saw a weak story.
Interesting, yes any messages Lucas had in his movies were very muted.
Thank you ken cole. you did the Krain kick to Star Wars lesson
🥋 🦵 💫..
😆 You’re welcome!
Great point about EU!
this is 7 i can think of a lot more that could be learned.
Great video man
I appreciate it. Thank you!
Nailed so many things. And really nailed it when they brought so many of the original cast back but didn’t give them an on screen reunion moment which- if done w care- would have made the fans look f the original so happy.
Thank you!
I've been a star wars fan most of my life and the karate kid franchise and cobra Kai tv series
There is a new star wars t.v. series called Andor is coming out soon
For sure, I'm looking forward to checking out Andor!
Sony is learning the Disney Money Grab with the announcement of the new KK movie...
Uh oh...
The producers of kobra kai have done the impossible. It improves with every season, the story makes sense and they have brought back all the actors.
With Cobra KI you remember the old sayings. Or lessons. You see the that interaction with other characters. You feel apart of that universe. Have not enjoyed a Star Wars movie since Revenge of the Jedi
Meant Sith
Ken, watch Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Trust me, you will love it.
Oh yes, very great! 😃
Thanks so much for your comment!
Like it went from Luke for begin the chosen one to Anakin then Disney comes in and says it's Rey that's messed up
Miyagi is Master Splinter/Yoga and Sato is Darth Vader/Shredder
Interesting!
No don’t you dare say that. Sato is not comparable to Darth Vader, it makes sense that Miyagi is Kenobi and Danial is Anakin, cause danial got manipulated and turned to the dark (joining cobra Kai) and then got turned back
Great editing with this video, Ken!
Thanks!
Amazing video Ken!
Thank you! 🙏
I also watched all the Kenobi t.v. season 1
I liked your video before I even watched it...only cause I've been saying this since Season 2
YES! 🙌
Yessss
I have a question:
What is the sauce for this moment 20:49 ?
Great video 9/10, be cool to see this format but changed to Icarly revival or girl meets world vs cobra Kai.
Thank you!
Yes, it seems passion is key.
Greetings from Poland.
Another great video 😉
Thank you!
Spot on, great comparison
Thanks!
Thank you for the excellent comment!
Great video KC!

This was really good! But you already knew I thought that, hehe.

Miguel = Han Solo

I do agree.
What about Duck Tales 17?
Nice!
No chance for Hilary Swank to be in Season 6 of Cobra Kai.
She is pregnant and expecting twins for 2023.
I'm happy for her but sad for Cobra Kai :(
Star Wars had its moment. Cobra Kai is in the middle of their's.
Maybe a remake of episode IX based off of the Colin Trevorrow’s script.
That would be very interesting. Could it happen?
hi ken Obi Wan kenobi was a great Mentor to Luke Skywalker teaching him the ways of the force
in the other Star Wars Sequels Luke feels that he blams himself for Ben Solo Kylo Ren turning to the
dark side and he does not want to Teach the force to any one anymore not to Rey but Rey is a
quick learner she learns the ways of the force
I agree. But Star Wars has been dead to me since they sold ou
I totally understand.
Cobra Kai > Disney's Star Wars
The last few Star Wars movies weren't good.😞
Star Wars 7-9 was ruined.
I want you to know that I am a fan of Star Wars and also Star Trek because I grew up on films like these cover Kai has no ties to either of them if you only knew the power of the cobra arise I’ll be one or not have told you what really happened to your father that I am just kidding that’s just a reference but I do want to say this to you that cobra Kai has nothing to do with Star Wars or Star Trek it’s not space film
Call Kai is a reference to Star Wars a little bit with the domestic robberies with Dan LaRusso and John Lawrence and all those things but after the fourth season they stopped having that rivalry because of their past is sore to one another how many mils says that to them that they have wore in common with one another because both of them has no real father to clean to so you would know they did had them selves to have mentors so sometimes when I watch that show cobra Kai I can see a little bit of Star Wars was in that show Star Trek not so much
But here’s the video that you can do if you would like to take a video request what is the drug about the rivalry between Samantha LaRusso and Tory Nichols because I think they’re never going to find Karen Brown with Tori and Sam so I’d like to see if you would like to make a video about it so but yeah I want to know anything about it
Did you watch the video. He is comparing how cobra kai brought back a legacy franchise well as where star wars didnt
I want you to know that I am a fan of Star Wars because I grew up on it but there’s a big difference with cobra Kai and Star Wars there is no way we can compare Star Wars to cobra Kai just because of the characters in the legacy of it does that make it a better film or a better show to prove that
@@robbieanson1218 the point of the video is to how cobra kai respecttilly brough back where as star wars didnt
If you want to know what I mean is this that Star Wars is completely different from cobra Kai yes there’s elements of it and he has I agree with you in that area but they don’t add up because call Kai is just a show about karate stores is completely different because it is a franchise not the Carter kid or the crib of Kai episodes separate universe they don’t have to bring back legendary characters from the previous movies I don’t have to do that and I are the stores and iMessage me then yes I will agree with you the current Kia is that show cobra Kai is completely different altogether that’s all I mean
