- In this video i will show you how i setup a 20 gallon coral quarantine tank for my new 300 gallon build. I took advantage of the petco $1 per gallon sale to get the tank. Aqueon also had sales on heaters and power filters. I will be using three month cured pukani for bacterial filtration.

Could you post your lighting schedule file?
I actually like this set up I have everything for it but didn’t think it would come out like this I’m try it now
Do you mind if I use this set up in my video and mention you?
The setup looks great and I am very happy the light came in handy and is doing its job. It was also great to see Ocean is doing well in quarantine. Can't wait to see him in the 300. Thank you for the shout out, it is greatly appreciated.
new to the hobby. thanks for taking the time to create this
Great content, thanks for producing. A future video showing the process of dipping and cleaning frags would be really appreciated.
Awesome info took your advice a while back and ended up picking up a small tank for quarantine also can’t put anything in yet till I get a light but I’m working on it thanks for all the knowledge you share
great info, thanks
Grateful for your information
Great information, been preaching this myself as of late
Nicely done dude!
Great tips.
Fantastic information Travis, been considering doing exactly this lately as an inclusion to resetting up our 125, there's been several times we got a new frag, removed it from the plug after acclimation to glue it to some rock in the main display and found something wriggling on the plug where the frag had just been removed.
Nice update To QT is always good. I have seen too many people have to run fishless tanks because they didn't QT the coral or fish
Hi Travis. Love the videos - really enjoyable and educational! Thanks for taking the time putting them together. I’ve had a look but I can’t see - what is your coral dipping process? As in, what chemicals you’re using, how long you dip for, etc. Thanks again.
I was setting one up very similar to this, bought my tanks at Petco sale as well. Just have to find a low-cost lighting solution that's the most expensive part of this quarantine system. But since I only get one coral at a time usually thought about doing my quarantine with a 10 gallon tank. Maybe with a single UFO style light.
I got one for coral and live rock. No more parasites!
Awesome video one question what setting is your light at. Also subbed
Recently did the same thing. It's dangerous out here!
Awesome video. Why were you thinking of adding a six line wrasse? Did you do it?
You might want to consider adding an acclimated freshwater molly instead of a 6 line wrasse. The reason being the fish will have no immunity to any saltwater fish disease or parasites. It will function as a canary. I know you are primarily concerned with pests not fish disease but there's always the possibility of a coral or invert bringing in something that will effect fish. I've been meaning to do this in my own fishless frag tank which I do use to isolate new arrivals.
people like you are why i dont want to get into this hobby. If you could only see how twisted and sick what you said is. Lets use the life of an animal we deem less significant to indicate if there's disease. I cant believe how a human being can casually say something like this, one day you will meet God almighty and He will teach you that you had no more right to breathe than an ant.
God loves you beyond anything you can ever understand but man, what a disgusting soul may He have mercy
Love your videos! Thank you so much for the great info! I'm curious what media you have in the filter. Would I need a filter if I am only going to use the quarantine tank a few times a year?
Carbon
Your information on QT systems has been a fantastic help for us. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. In this 20 gal QT, did you or would you still use the Probiotic Marine Formula as a safety precaution for a tank with invertabrae as well as corals? It was something we saw you try on a previous QT video but I don't remember seeing the results of how well it worked.
I still use the probiotic not so much in coral at but fish yes
Do you do a 76 qt on corals and inverts because tomonts could still be on it?
Thank for the information. Think I would need a much smaller tank though. Will check it out. One thing I gave no rock I can add to this quarantine tank, so do I do I but a bit of live rock or dry rock and put that in? Or do I need to do something to it before Hand?
Hey there. I’m setting up a invert/coral QT and was wondering what to do for lighting. What would you recommend for an fairly inexpensive light for a 14 gallon cube. 100$ give or take.
Oh and this would be for everything from acro to softies. Thank you.
How are you getting all that water movement in the coral qt? Just the hang on back filter?
Great video man, i have a question tho , lets say you have your wrasse on the coral qt tank and you put in a new coral from a infected ich tank doesn't the ich automatically going into the wrasse and remain dormant all the time in the fish and the coral qt tank ?
How did you get the acrylic lid cut to fit the tank?
How high should the frag rack sit on the same tank for mixed coral using AI prime HD light? 6 inches off bottom?
I've gotten velvet from a coral. I will quarantine all livestock know.
Do you put anything like coral meds or nutrition or anything? Do feed them ?
do you include wavemaker ? i not see any
I think I would build my first coral qt tank following your video. Do I need a protein skimmer? I researched about that but looks like 50/50. It would be a coral QT tank as the primary purpose, but I would like to keep the tank for observation after fragging corals, with dosing some coral food and major elements. What do you think?
I'm trying to set up a QT tank for corals only. Is it ok to add a live rock or live sand to it? And could I add a six line wrasse or cleaner shrimp to it to assist in pest control?
What are your thoughts on dipping frags with Peroxide? Also, how often do you add new frags into the quarantine? For instance if you quarantine all frags for 30 days, but during those 30 days added new frags into the system, how do you prevent cross contamination and do you do a final dip prior to adding to the Main Display?
I use peroxide on corals with algae on them but that's it. I don't add any corals to the QT until the ones I have are done unless it's something like a hammer or torch and I can clearly see parasites and pest.
What about any last dips prior to putting into the Main tank?
What did you use to cut the glass?
Your doing it right when you are making your holes a donut not a volcano
Can I replace live rock with plastic bio balls in coral quarantine tank?
Did you have a difficult time keeping that temp stable with the lid? Can't seem to stabilize my temp!!!! Thinking of ditching the lid for an ato. Thoughts???
How well did this work long term? I am thinking of doing this as a frag tank for stuff I want to sell. Do you think I could get away with just doing water changes weekly with the dirty water from my main display?
Very good video. While repeated dipping can prevent coral pests from entering your main tank, any chemical that will kill aiptasia will kill corals. Why did that benefit of quarantine not occur to me?
What spectrum of light is that?
I made a 10 gallon quarantine coral tank, but after dipping the corals innoticed like 3 to 4 frags develop algea should i re dip them or can i add like a fish thats been quarantine to help trim ?
Hi FishOfHex. I love this concept and planning to do the same with my 125G stocking with a 20L. I'm mostly doing LPS (euphillyas, acans) and Softies (Shrooms, Zoas, 1 Toadstool Leather) with some hardier SPS mixed in (Monti caps).
I want to do my coral stock in two rounds of Coral QT. Is this possible? I honestly don't need that many corals as I prefer the large colony look over time and keeping some shrimp in there to keep the cycle going.
My main concern is just keep it stable and the not running an ATO. I'm going to get the glass top that Petco sells vs your cut acrylic.
This question will be answered in my next email/comment Q&A video
Won’t using depleted water from your display result in low levels of calcium and alk? I was thinking of doing the same thing but decided against it.
is painting the back necessary to the development of the coral? Tbh I want to run a healthy tank and have a side tank for experimentation with the cuttings (from the occasional hair cut day) I am a marine bio major. I mean I don't mind blackening the back if its beneficial but otherwise I personally don't find it aesthetic. Note that since my question might be seen as stupid, I am a sophomore in my gen bio degree before moving on to my MS in marine but I have some ideas to help the ocean hence the experiments.
I also have a OCEAN revive light. What's your lighting schedule and what do you have each channel set on?
Low 30% blue 15% white
FishOfHex Thanks!!
New sub. FW guy lurking the SW scene. Can the same tank be used for fish and coral QT? Do you medicate? If so, with what? In FW I medicate all QT fish and do a peroxide spray on new plants + inspection for snail eggs but no QT for plants. Thanks!
If you use copper in the tank during a fish quarantine then no you cant use it for coral.
Travis, what’s your preferred method for Aiptasia removal if you can only see 5 or so of them?
if i can remove the rock ill take it out and scrape them off. If not ill inject them with kalk via syringe
So while these corals are being quarantined, do you have medication in the tank or are you just dipping them and returning to quarantine tank to observe? Im not actually new to the hobby but just started a 55 gal after 15 years. Back then I did not quarantine fish or coral and I suppose I was just lucky BUT I also only bought EVERYTHING in my tank from ONE store that I trusted very much so....
How long did it take for that acrylic top take to start warping? Lol I tried that same thing and would change shape every 24 hrs
Never did
I may have missed it, but what were you using for flow in the quarantine tank?
I looked again and saw a small power head. What make and model is it? I also have a 20g tank and flow is difficult with a tank so small
Is there any reason why you can't have a quarantine tank with both fish and corals that same time, no copper treatment. i'm looking at setting up a quarantine without having 2 seperate quarantine tanks to separate Corals and fish.
if we decided to buy corals off your website, should we still quarantine?
Yes you should qt any coral you get no matter from who
Even though you moved a coral 1 minute from a tank of yours to another?
Have you selected the first veteran for a tank?
Still processing applications. I have also made changes to the requirements of the program that will be talking about soon.
Nobody ever talks about the main reason to quarantine coral which is to kill off the tomonts on them. They don’t die until after 30 days on average with many strains lasting for 45 and a few all the way up to 72.
First
How do you cut the the top?
Jig Saw
Im buying a reef system on craigslist. Im wondering if i should fill up a 29 gallon with his saltwater and put his fish in it until the main tank recycles. Should i do this or just plob em in the main tank as soon as its set up?
if you havent quarantined the fish yet this would be a good time to do so.
Tip: you use "with that being said" WAY too much. It's not just annoying, it is unnecessary.
Imagine what kind of person you have to be to point out something that dumb...
With that being said have a nice day
@@FishOfHex I like your videos, I was even going to order products from you. I guess your just using "With that being said" to replace "ummm". Just trying to help a fellow creator. But never mind. Maybe you shouldn't have a channel if you cannot handle critique.
Bro trust me what you said is nothing and doesn't offend me. You said something dumb in a way that makes you better and the response you got was justified. Would you like me to come and give you pointers on your content?
