I remember watching this game as a kid, Gunter Netzer was majestic, best player in the world at the time playing at his peak.

The funny thing about the game is that Netzer and Beckenbauer were very pessimistic. Netzer told Beckenbauer something like " if we concede les than 5 goals, we got an excellent result. "

It bring tears to my eyes to see the late Gordon Banks keeping goal for the Three Lions at Wembley in this first leg quarter final tie of the 1972 Nations Cup.It was 29 April 1972 and the 1966 World Cup champions were at the receiving end of a 3-1 drubbing from the West Germans who would went on to win the Nations Cup.
Banks after this would have three more games with England before he suffered an eye injury that would end his international football career. That car accident happened in October of the same year.Banks was one of the five 1966 World Cup winners playing that night at Wembley.

It was the last time that so many of the 1966 World Cup winners took to the field against West Germany in the first leg of the Nations Cup quarterfinals at Wembley on 29 April 1972.
Yes five of that 1966 World Cup triumphant team played against the West Germans and ended up losing 3-1.They were skipper Bobby Moore, midfielders Alan Ball and Martin Peters, striker Geoff Hurst and goalkeeper Gordon Banks.
As for Hurst that Wembley first leg tie would be his last for England and that goes too for Francis Lee.

The West German team captained by Franz Beckenbauer that destroyed Sir Alf Ramsey's England 3-1 at Wembley on 29 April 1972 in the first leg quarterfinal of the Nations Cup.
Many had expected the visitors to defend at Wembley but Helmut Shoen's charges attacked right from the start.
Sir Alf for the last time fielded almost half of the 1966 World Cup winners with Banks Moore,Hurst,Ball and Peters the survivors. But the midfield trio of Ball-Bell-Peters failed disastrously as the three were not ball winners.
It was goals from Uli Hoeness,Gunther Netzer(pen.) and Gerd Muller that buried England. What is most surprising two of those German goals came in the last five minutes.
And for the last time Hurst and Francis Lee wore the England shirt.

The last truly great and complete national side gives England a football lesson. Gunter Netzer a truly great master craftsman even if he was a little fragile.

Yes the late Gordon Banks was playing in one of his last ever matches for England in the Nations Cup quarter final first leg at Wembley on 29 April 1972.
Banks then 34 was one of the five 1966 World Cup winning team survivors apart from Bobby Moore,Martin Peters,Geoff Hurst and Alan Ball.
But even Banks could not stop the West Germans from scoring three goals through Uli Hoeness,Gunther Netzer(pen.) and Gerd Muller.Francis Lee got England's solitary goal.
That first leg match at Wembley was the last time England's supremo Sir Alf Ramsey fielded many of his 1966 World Cup winning team.In fact almost half of that Wembley victorious World Cup team took to the field. And in the return leg a fortnight later in Berlin which ended scoreless only four survivors played including Alan Ball who came in as a substitute.

Gunther Netzer. What a legendary. He had difficulty getting into the German squad. Talk about strength in depth. England midfield totally outclassed by Netzer and co.

Gunter faded away even before the 1974 World Cup.Germans claimed then he bedded many women in particular a Chinese from Malaysia.

The problem is/was, a football team needs only one midfield general at the pitch and Overath was already doing an excellent job.
Italy in 1970 World Cup had the same problem: The team had 2 excellent midfield generals in Rivera and Mazzola, so the Italy manager came up with the best solution he could think of: Using each player for on half of the game!!!

    • @jamsheadaziz3999
      @jamsheadaziz3999 Год назад

@13muller Netzer was the more flamboyant player, where as Overath was the steady eddy, no frills. I suppose Schon went with the safer option in Overath. Just look how talented Bernd Schuster was and the controversy surrounding him and his relationship with the German FA

I was 6 years old when I saw this on TV, my first England game. England have been such a disappointment ever since.
At least nowin my fifties, I no longer care and rather look forward to seeing our overpaid superstars get embarrassed in international football tournaments.
English players are just so limited and technically lacking in every way. All they had was pace, intensity and pressing.
As I said by no longer bothering I can enjoy watching England getting beaten.

I think it is the color of the German Football Federation. Should you notice, whenever the two team's captains (before the beginning of the game) shake hands and exchange those small flags, the German one is mainly Green and a little White color.
