Gerd Muller. Legend of the game. 68 goals in only 64 International matches. What a player. No wonder Peter Bonetti raised his arms in supplication when he scored West Germany's third goal against England.in the WC of 1970 in Mexico !😭😭😭
Definitely one of the greatest national teams to play football. However, the team clearly threw the game against East Germany to avoid playing Holland, Brazil and Argentina in the other group. Another interesting fact is that Breitner took the penalty in 1974 final because he said "there were no penalty takers on that team". It's interesting because Germany, after losing the next Euro Championship to the Czechoslovakia two years later on penalty kicks, went on to become the deadliest team on PK shootouts where they have not lost a PK shootout since both in WC and Euro championships, and they have been involved in about 7 or 8 shootouts since 1976. Now, if you play Germany in extra time, you better win before PKs, or the game is over.
great memories, i was 11 yrs @ the time of the wc final n remember all of it. 40 yra later and i had the honor again , when we won the wc 4 the 4th time in rio.
Everyone always leaves out the fact that in the second half, despite Holland's dominance, it was Gerd Müller who scored another goal. It was not given due to offside, but that was not correct. He was VERY clearly onside, not even close. Like they said in the beginning of the video: always at the right place at the right time. But hey, in the end it doesn't really matter...
The 2:1 was in the first half. There was no dutch dominance in the second half, if you study the videos. It was even. With another foul on Hölzenbein, which not got the deserved penalty, and a goal of Müller, not given because upside, wrong again. So it could have been 4:1.
Really strange to say that there was 'no Dutch dominance' in the second half when West German player who actually played in that final say that the Dutch laid siege on the West German goal. In fact at least one of them said that they got a lucky goal - Muller's. No the Dutch lost due to complacency and unlucky finishing by Rep, Neeskens and co. Mind you West Germany were a great team but the Dutch were better.
People kept saying that West Germany was drawn into an easier second round group. In reality, the only benefit was that the West Germans avoided the Dutch until the final. Group B was the tougher group: Poland beat Argentina & Brasil, Yugoslavia was arguably better than Brasil (dominated in the opening match between the two teams), and Sweden better than or at least, equal to East Germany.
John Trollinger By the way, there's no way Germany is the football nation. How many germans players are playing out of Germany? Try to number Brazilians and Argentinian.
hey im german i could now counts brazil legend with no end.,brazil je is the greatest football nation, they play with passion but every football player will win ,i mean its the greatest win the world cup n brazil won it 5 times,n brazil will win it again in the future, brasil has the most talentet football players in the world,n dont forget argentina;) they love also football, brazil n germany both nations love football but in different ways i think in both countrys is football everything, even in england, italy ,spain, but if i had to pick one the greatest football nation i would even say brazil, football is a world sport,at the end of the day after a fight on the pitch should football connect people thats what sports shouldbe
How many players play outside of a country doesn't tell anything about their strength. That just shows how good their own league is and in this case, the Brazilian and Argentinian leagues are not as the top European leagues. Why should good players move to a foreign country when their own league has comparable streng or money. And it was like that in the history and today.
23:11 it was not a lucky goal. It was a Gerd Müller goal. He scored goals like these ALL THE FREAKIN TIME. In any other team with any other striker...lucky, I guess. Gerd Müller is one of the best strikers in history because he was always ready and quick to strike out of nowhere.
Gerd Muller so underated. If you had a team and you needed a centre forward its him or Brazilian Ronaldo(I haven't seen much of Puskas but I think he'd be in the conversation) I love Van Basten but I know he's not in the top 3.
@Nikhil Bharadwaj A lot of people know of Marco. A lot of people know about Van Basten. Muller was more prolific for both country and clubs than Van Basten. Van Basten was a better striker for his clubs than Ronaldo. Ronaldo was better for his country than Van Basten. It depends what one values in a striker for their team. Muller was better than Van Basten and Ronaldo in the box. Van Basten was better than Muller and Ronaldo in the air and volleys. Ronaldo was better Muller and Van Basten at running at, around or past defenders 1 on 1.
At 11:25 is one of the most genius goals shown, from Gerd Müller. If I would have seem that Gerd Müller was offered on the Transit market, I would have paid with 2 Cruyffs to get him!
There WAS made an offer by Real, I believe. Before the WC. But the DFB (German Football Association) threatened to throw Müller out of the national team if he left the Bundesliga. Hard to believe nowadays.
Completely different types of player. Muller is a goalscoring machine and Cruyff was the complete footballer that pulled all the strings and controlled games. Ideally I'd like both in my team but if given a choice to pick just one I'm picking Cruyff. He's the far superior overall player.
Best national team in all football history with such legends like Beckenbauer Muller Netzer Overath Maier Bonhof Breitner Seeler Libuda Wimmer Schnellinger Grabowski Lohr Hoeness Heynckes Held Vogts ... just a timeless and fantastic team
74 cup is the furthest I remember. Germany was my favourite. Many years after I coached football and picked the whit jersey an black shorts for my team. As a teen my football uniform was white and black and it all goes back to 74
Same for me , i thought the black &white looked really sharp , wanted west germany to win , over 40 yrs later my vespa is black & white ? My house painted black & white 👍
At Euro72, Germany has settled in with a new, fresh attacking style. Two years later, this golden generation became world champions. What a great team, what great players.
Maybe the best team in 74 was Poland. The dutch made a big mistake. After their quick goal they tried to humiliate the german team and you can' t do that with them, not on their home ground. Netherlands lost because of arrogance and I will give no quarter.
+ Wagner , let me guess its Brasil because of 5 wc wins ? Dude momentarly Brasil maybe number 1 in FIFA ranking , 2 is Argentinia and 3 is Germany !Brasil has only 5 wc to show for , but Germany has all. the records now ! Should i mention the semifinal match in 2014 Germany vs Brasil , where Germany brock all kinds of records in that semifinal game ! Brasil only hangs on to 5 WC wins and that they participated in every WC or have 20 entries to Germanys 19! Thats about it ! Only Brasil ,Uruguay has his 2 WC titles in the past and Argentinia only won it in 1986 against Germany in the finals and since than they havent won a WC anymore ! In 1990 they lost the Finals to Germany 0:1 ( Brehme scored the only goal , true a penalty kick !)and in 2014 in Brasil again against Germany 0:1 ( Götze Overtime goal!)
I remember watching the final with my uncle. He had a company in Germany back then so we were all going for them. Can't believe how quick 49 years went by.
Their players that time from the 70s to the 90s got that "authoritarian" attitude on the pitch ..they always felt they were better than their opponents if & when their opponents were leading by 2-3 goals that they could equalized & won the match.
When I was a kid in the 80s watching the world Cup I figured out pretty quickly that Brazil were the team of skill and imagination whereas Germany were the ruthless efficient unit and then there was Maradona ⚽️😇
Typical british documentary: Not a single wrong word about others, always accepting the achievements of others , totally fair. Sportsmen right to the end.
... and with absolutely correct translation of everything that the German players interviewed in this video said. (I am German and can therefore judge this very well.)
No, there's a lot more on that particular match. Berti Vogts was trained to constantly be around Cruijff and neutralize him. Germany were lucky the Dutch didn't put in effort until it was too late. There's a documentary about it on my channel.
That 1974 World Cup final was the first live game I have ever seen but because of the time difference the 1978 World Cup was very difficult to follow so the 1982 tournament was the one I truly enjoyed

Fun Fact: The European Championship in 2024 will be staged in Germany, exactly 50 years after Franz Beckenbauer lifted the World Cup at home soil. However, it also coincides with 70 years of the first major trophy (1954 World Cup known as Miracle of Bern) and 10 years after Joachim Low's famous World Cup win in Brazil (including 7-1 win against Brazil). Germany might win the European Championship for the fourth time if you remember those milestones.

Libuda, great winger, brilliant!
Now, if you play Germany in extra time, you better win before PKs, or the game is over.
that is what the Italians did in 2006 semi final!
Well, in 2016 France was able to beat them.
@@lionmori You'd better thank Del Piero.
You fella are talking through your arse - they the W German's didn't deliberately lose to the East - watch the game again and show some RESPECT .
Many thanks for uploading. Only wish Germany had had a player like Gerd Müller in the Euro this year.
They had Gomez before he got injured. It was the first time ever that the fans were chearing FOR Gomez and not against him. ;)
GERD MÜLLER deserves recognition he's goals helped Germany win the 72 Euro and 74 World Cup Final

Yes, but he is referring to a disallowed goal in the second half, which would have been Mueller's second of the match.
Roshan Fernando Absolutely correct..
Müller is the best attacker ever, better than Messi. But it was a different era, never forget that.
This German generation remain always the best generation ever of all time in the international football....
germany vs italy , mexico 70' was the match of the century.....
Das sehe ich ganz genauso!
ich habe niemals einen besseren deutschen Fußballer als GERD MÜLLER gesehen.
ein Phänomen, absolut
Yes!
Germany, the greatest football nation of all time.
Brasil play with heart, Germany play with their heads.
John Trollinger You're wrong; Brazil plays naturally with skills. Brazil play to have fun. If you talking about the crowd; yes ,they root with heart.
Reminds me, how many times did you beat us in the final of a tournament again?
How many players play outside of a country doesn't tell anything about their strength. That just shows how good their own league is and in this case, the Brazilian and Argentinian leagues are not as the top European leagues. Why should good players move to a foreign country when their own league has comparable streng or money. And it was like that in the history and today.
most consistent national team ever
aged well
I will make the adjective "consistent" mine. Thank you.
Arno Nym that was terrible but you can’t take away their success after that one time. Their consistency is to be admired.
Netzer was the star player in 72
At his best the greatest midfielder of the post 1950s - a true master craftsman.
Why not van Basten? Because of injuries/longevity? He had almost no flaws as a striker except for injuries
Rinus Michels, when he was in Barcelona, he initially wanted Müller, but had to settle for Cruijff. Fact!
@@christianvanneuves9958 It was the luck of Spain...Cruijff set the foundations of the future great spanish football.

Germany's legend status is well deserved. Brilliant team and country
GERD MULLER was really very very very extra ordinary player.the best of all.
Maybe the best team in 74 was Poland.
The dutch made a big mistake.
After their quick goal they tried to humiliate the german team and you can' t do that with them, not on their home ground.

Germany is the greatest ever!
Tiger perhaps from Europe, but not the world's.
A brazilian I suppose?
By the way Italy 4 WC wins & Germany 4 WC wins and what does South America have only Brasil with 5 WC wins !
Tom Coolman You missed 1978. Argentina has won it twice: 1978 and 1986.

is there a documentary about the teams who significantly shaped the football of today before ww2? Like England but more Italy, Austria, Uruquay etc.
They did not show Müllers second goal in the WC final, which was falsely disallowed for offside.
I still remember watching that game on TV in 1974.
My high school times)
I also remember I was rooting for Holland that time)
Their players that time from the 70s to the 90s got that "authoritarian" attitude on the pitch ..they always felt they were better than their opponents if & when their opponents were leading by 2-3 goals that they could equalized & won the match.

West Germany was better than Dutch in the 1974 final World Cup.
