Number 1 reason why skateboarders get injured

- Outside of the obvious contact and falling injuries this has to be the most overlooked and biggest cause of skate related injuries.
Training/Skate Volume.
Now , I don’t want to give the impression that the body is fragile as you are not a little snowflake that can’t handle a lot of skating. We all know skaters that skate 4-8 hrs a day and don’t experience these type of injuries. The big difference is how they got there.
Most of these outliers have gotten there at young age where the body can recover quicker and get used to the high demand of loading on the body. That’s the take away point here. Finding your adequate level of skating volume that you can RECOVER from.
The body is robust and can learn to deal with a lot however how you get there is what’s important here. Radically increasing your skate volume over a short period of time is a sure fire way to getting injured. It simply does not allow the body to recover and make the adaptation to being able to tolerate those levels of skating in the long term.
Instead muscles, tendons and ligaments get tight and cause issues that force the skater to take long periods of time off.
If you want to increase your time spent skating or skate performance do it gradually so the body has a chance to recover, adapt and get used to it.
If you have had 2 weeks off don’t then decide to go for a 2 hr skate but rather aim to build back up over 40 min blocks over a few days/weeks.
If you want to land a trick start by working on it for 20 mins a day and build up in time over a few sesh’s.
Adopting a bigger picture approach will allow the body to make the adaptation which will allow you to eliminate a huge portion of unnecessary injuries skaters face leaving you only to worry about the one’s we can’t help.
