Thank you Belinda for this video. What most people calling for banning palm oil fail to consider is the human factor. You may feel it's OK to cancel palm oil from the safety of your own home in a rich country but in many poorer countries, palm oil is a source of livelihood. It's the industry that puts food on their table and sends their children to school. They don't work in corporate high-rise offices or sell essential oils in yoga classes. Go sustainable yes but don't forget the solution isn't as simple as cancelling an entire industry without understanding the implications it has on every level. Honestly, the child labor in your Mica-containing makeup is a much more concerning issue that large cosmetic brands need to be held accountable for.
Thank you Belinda for talking about this important subject. Actually, there are more arguments against switching from palm to other oils: even if we had sustainable coconut oil, we would need more than twice the land surface to get the same amount of oil! With other oils, the yield par acre is up to 10 times lower that palm. Palm oil is First of the Class. Furthermore, some of the big suppliers have begun to go beyond RSPO and the 50% thing. There are procedures (more costly, certainly) where 100% of the palm oil is traced and accounted for, where the oil can be traced back to the specific site of harvest and treatment. That is where pressure is needed to get people to shop from these companies. Increased cost should not keep us from aiming for this, at least not in our rather profitable industry! Malaysian government is particularly active in this topic.
Thank you for sharing your insights, I believe it is the way most companies will go over time, to ensure even stronger traceability and higher sustainability claims.
Thank you Belinda. From the extensive research I conducted on palm oil in cosmetics I made the decision (for my brand) to use RSPO Palm oil when needed and become a member of RSPO so I could stay updated on this contentious subject. I am trying to politely educate other brands about the negative effects of their fear mongering and show them there is so many other factors involved in making a decision to just not use palm oil. It's going to be a long game but we will get there. Thanks again.
Thanks Belinda for this informative video, palm oil is life to us in West Africa, It elevates poverty in our community and we don’t have endangered animals. They are sustainably grown.
I've been saying this year in year out and sad to say that majority still want to believe what they want to believe. Educating them is an impossible mission. They simply continue to shoot down palm blindly.
Why just the 50% of sustainable palm oil for the certification? Is it because that there are not enough sustainable sources, also said too less producers produce in a sustainable way? Are the costs so much higher?
It enables suppliers some flexibility where supplies run low. They usually aim for more than this but this the definition of ‘mass balance’ to allow for supply issues so that companies are not left without products to offer. You could also ask this question of the RSPO certifiers, who have set this definition.

Thank you plus in Africa most traditional meals are cooked with palmoil. Palmoil is so much used out of cosmetics but they won't see that.
