Thank you so much for posting your method on feeding with a syringe with bottle nipple!! We are Japanese Chin breeders and dealing with a struggling pup. I truly believe that your idea of adding the nipple to the syringe has saved our puppy's life!! He not only is thriving now, but never lost his suckling instinct and is now nursing beautifully from his mother after only two days of using this method! We are so thrilled and couldn't thank you enough! :) Thank you!!
To formula used by vet's for how much to feed a puppy is by multiplying 0.26 x (the puppies weight in grams) this is how much the puppy should consume in a 24 hour period. So you take that total and divide it by how many feedings in a 24hr period. Ex- 0.26 x 165 grams = 42.9 Now I'm feeding the puppy every 3 hrs so I'll divide 42.9 ÷ 8 feedings = 5.4ml your puppy should consume per feeding.

Thank you so much for posting this, I'm currently looking after some foster puppies and their mother, she had 7 puppies. One of them, a runt, has been crying for some time and we have been trying to make space for her to eat. This method could save her and her other brother who is also a runt.
have nine newborn German Shepherd puppies that are now four days old. Some gained a few ounces above the 15 ounce average birth weight and then rebounded back down to birth weight. Some stayed at the same weight as birth weight over those 4 days. They are eating about every 2 hours. They are strong and vigorous. They only cry when hungry and can easily crawl over to feed themselves. In between feeding if they don't cry, they sleep and don't act hungry. We have a light bulb that keeps a small area at 85 degrees thats available when they aren't next to mom. We've checked rectal temps on a couple and the were 97-99 degrees. We have started a small amount of formula, about a tablespoon at a time in between feedings. The small amount is to prevent aspiration. The vet recommended a tiny bit of Karo syrup rubbed onto the tongue occasionally to keep blood sugar ok. We didn't get much information from the vet so far to tell us when we should be worried. How many days can they remain near their birth weight and still be ok? We want them to gain an ounce or two a day but we aren't sure what we need to do differently? I know it's possible they could have worms or something? Mom seems to be making milk. The puppies seem satisfied. We give the mom canned puppy food mixed with a regular dry dog food, a hard-boiled egg every day and some peanut butter for fat. We aren't sure what would require taking them to the vet? We have good vets and they didn't ask to see them yet. I know it's possible that the first few days they might not gain much? But I want to stay on top of everything. Most information I read is that they should gain 1-2 ounces a day after the first 24 hours.
My experience is limited to Cavaliers, but I imagine the same basic principles apply to the larger breeds as well. A slight drop in weight is pretty normal for the first day, but after that I expect to see a gain every day, with maybe one day here and there where the weight holds steady. After about 8 days, the puppies should have doubled their birth weight. I use the supplementation shown in this video if a puppy has either lost weight after the second day, or has held steady for two days or more, providing the pup is able to nurse vigorously. In most cases, I give 1 cc of formula per ounce of body weight about every 3-4 hours. In more urgent situations, when the puppy doesn't have the strength to nurse, I tube feed the same amount. In your case, with the weight holding steady for just a few days, you might try supplementing with the formula a bit less often - maybe 3 or 4 times a day. This formula has never done any harm to any of my puppies. I'll give you the recipe below: Ingredients: One can of evaporated goat’s milk, undiluted (You can substitute evaporated cow’s milk if you can’t find the goat’s milk.) One cup of full fat yogurt (the fattiest and freshest you can find) 2 raw egg yolks (don’t worry about the raw eggs) 1/3 cup of freshly made, strong liver broth made from boiling a piece of liver in one cup of water and then reducing the water to 1/3. You can substitute fresh beef broth if you just can’t tolerate the smell of liver, but the liver is much better. Don’t eliminate the broth. 1 Tablespoon of Virgin Olive Oil (you can use mayonnaise if you like, but remember it is acid based). Use 2 tablespoons to make this formula for kitties. 1 teaspoon of karo or corn syrup. 1 dropper full of baby vitamin that doesn’t contain iron. Directions: Place it all in a blender, blend then pour into ice cube trays and freeze. Once frozen, store the ice cubes in a plastic bag and take out how many you need for a feeding; thaw and warm to about 100 degrees. It’s good in the freezer for a full year. If you are going to use this for bottle feeding or Adele’s sponge feeding technique, you may need to thin it with a little bit of pedialyte. The advantage of this formula is that it has been formulated to contain 3-4 times the calorie content of breast milk. Mother’s milk has 3-4 calories per cc. This formula has 10-12 calories per cc. The reason for using the evap milk without diluting is to get extra calories, same with the full fat yogurt and the olive oil. It is all about calories. Your puppy will gain weight on this formula beginning about 48 hours after beginning to feed the formula. Feed the puppy one cc (a ml is identical to a cc) of formula for every ounce of body weight every 3-4 hours or when crying from hunger. Self-regulated bottle feeders may eat more at every feeding and want to eat less often. This is fine too.
@@chaskat35 Thanks for all the detailed information! We are taking shifts around the clock to make sure all the puppies get fed, and not letting the more pushy ones take away from the others, as well as some bottle feeding in between. I heard about some homemade formulas. But no one explained the difference to me over other formulas or vs mothers milk. Thats very helpful. We also like to watch the (first time) mother carefully because she doesn't seem to know when a puppy crawls underneath her or if she accidentally stepped on or lays over on one! It helps that we have 5 kids and homeschool. Most of the time we are all at home! I'd like to try that recipe soon as possible Sounds like the ingredients shouldn't be hard to find. The calorie count sounds like a very good advantage. I started to wonder if the puppies might have worms or something, but not sure if dewormer treatment usually waits until 2 weeks age? But then again maybe puppies can be a bit slow to gain without having worms, from what you mentioned. It's hard to get a real accurate measure over the first few days but maybe after a week, with the supplements, we will get a better average. Thanks again.
I don't give any deworming treatments until at least 3 weeks of age. Pretty much all puppies have some sort of worm parasites, but I've never seen it hold them back from gaining weight. Usually, it's because the puppy's suckling reflex is weak, or the others are pushing it away from the nipple. Of course, if the puppy doesn't bounce back after you take all the steps, there may be a problem you have to see a vet about, but it takes a while before that would become evident. Sounds like you're doing all the right things - just hang in there and be vigilant.
@@chaskat35 Thanks again for the recipe. I thought I would give you an update. Its now day 10 since birth. All 9 puppies are gaining. Maybe still slightly below average, but they all seem pretty strong and healthy. Average wt at birth was around 14 ounces. On day 10, average wt is 34.5 ounces. I guess they doubled their wt around days 7-9, which is supposed to be normal. They get most of their feeding from their mother, and we only give 1-2 tablespoons of the formula to top them off, Maybe 3-4 times in 24 hrs. Mostly when they seem frustrated that they can't get something off of mom. We rotate spots on mom first, and then use the bottle, just to be sure. I've also gotten some experience feeling their bellies to see if they're full and try to burp them as needed. We take shifts so someone is watching them 24 hrs a day. Getting exhausting but we like to know they're staying safe. The mom comes out between feedings sometimes to take breaks. Having her scent away sometimes seems to help the puppies not be awakened as much either. Although its probably a balance of a calming presence as well as a temptation to feed all the time! Haha. Thanks again.
what kind of milk can I give my puppy? Because I heard cow milk which is the one we human use can cause diarrhea and worms. Please reply as quick as you can. Thank you!
Eduardo Rivera, heh. Interesting. I saw somebody else on RUclips feeding a newborn kitten with goat's milk and the kitten did fine. She said he's a year old and has a family too. Well, then I guess you need to go to a pet store and buy milk that's been specially formulated for puppies.
I just found a newborn pup around my cats who stay on the porch and she was so small I thought she was a kitten and I've never fed one so early so this really helps on how I can help her

I have a puppy that nearly died because he wasn’t feeding and he is way smaller than the other puppy’s. Because we have been with him he can’t go back to his mum. We have been feeding him with a stringe but loads comes out. After he was making a loud crying noise that sounded like he was unhappy. We have ordered a bottle to see if that helps.
If formula comes out of his mouth/nose, you are feeding too quickly. That's why I like the nipple on the syringe - it allows the puppy to help determine how fast he gets fed. Try slowing down a bit.

YOUR PUPPY IS SO CUTE
what kind of milk can I give my puppy? Because I heard cow milk which is the one we human use can cause diarrhea and worms. Please reply as quick as you can. Thank you!
you can feed it with cow milk but you should buy milk only for dog
it says online when I searched and you can't feed them with cow or goat milk as that causes diarrhea and worms though.
Eduardo Rivera, I thought goat milk was fine to use?
according to my vet, no, it has fat.
I just found a newborn pup around my cats who stay on the porch and she was so small I thought she was a kitten and I've never fed one so early so this really helps on how I can help her
that is so adorable I'm crying 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Baby puppies have strong heart and they will grow up fast

Awesome video thank you. Do you have a recipe for the formula?
Ingredients:
One can of evaporated goat’s milk, undiluted (You can substitute evaporated cow’s milk if you can’t find the goat’s milk.)
One cup of full fat yogurt (the fattiest and freshest you can find)
2 raw egg yolks (don’t worry about the raw eggs)
1/3 cup of freshly made, strong liver broth made from boiling a piece of liver in one cup of water and then reducing the water to 1/3.
Directions:
Place it all in a blender, blend then pour into ice cube trays and freeze.
Feed the puppy one cc (a ml is identical to a cc) of formula for every ounce of body weight every 3-4 hours or when crying from hunger.
oh my gosh she is so cute
Josue Garcia dogs like her so cute

I have a puppy that nearly died because he wasn’t feeding and he is way smaller than the other puppy’s. Because we have been with him he can’t go back to his mum. We have been feeding him with a stringe but loads comes out. After he was making a loud crying noise that sounded like he was unhappy. We have ordered a bottle to see if that helps.
If formula comes out of his mouth/nose, you are feeding too quickly. That's why I like the nipple on the syringe - it allows the puppy to help determine how fast he gets fed. Try slowing down a bit.
