- Heya! Many of us have those art supplies that just didn't work out... and these are some of mine. Todays video is all about five art supplies I regret buying. From sketchbooks and paper blocks, to pencils and markers. Art materials do come down to a person's individual preferences, and what one person loves another may hate. That's a beautiful part of our variety as people :D Most of the supplies I show today are based on preference - they just don't fit my needs and what I like for that art supply. The yellow staining from the markers was really sad for me though. I hope I can give ohuhu another try in the future, with better results from their products.

for the XL blocks, try "dramatic landscapes" as Robert Dutton does. I watched a demonstration by him where he shaved blocks like that into tubs, used the graphite powder with binder and did other experiments with big chunks of graphite that looked fun. Maybe you can get some use out of them after all! :)

I have the same ohuhu set and I noticed the yellow staining happened on my swatches in my sketchbook so I stick a piece of tracing paper on the pieces I use the markers on and haven't had a problem since.
That's a good way to get around it!
That sucks with the Ohuhu markers, so sorry that happened to your works! I have a set of 120, but luckily they haven't yellowed my pages yet. I definitely regret buying the wrong paper for my markers, I feel they just work best on watercolor paper rather than mixed media paper 😂
I agree, watercolour paper looks amazing with markers but I always worry I'm draining them quickly on the more absorbent paper. You win some you lose some 😂
I hope ohuhu works out for me better in the future, as they do seem to work well for most people
I had the yellow staining with the Arteza brand alcohol markers and was devastated when my drawings were ruined.

I don't usually watch art supply regret videos, but here I am. Never knew alcohol markers to do that, and it's the Ohuhu new set too. :/
It was a shock to me too, but it seems to be more common with cheaper markers or as a defect. From speaking to other people not all ohuhu makers do this.
Those #ohuhu markers line in those boxes are known for terrible yellowing. It wretched so many if my pages! I contacted Ohuhu and all they would do is refund my money. Terrible markers, I did a video warning others. Everyone who has bought that box has yellowing so you are not alone.
Oh my goodness! That's such a shame. At least we aren't alone.
I purchase the Fabiano 9 x 12 block and the same thing happened to me. I emailed customer service and they were quite rude about it. I will never buy a Fabiano product again.

I’ve never had yellowing happen, but one time I had some stickers on a sketchbook I have (never finished) and they all became sticky and disgusting. My sketchbooks were in storage since I moved to a different house three months ago
Oh no, how strange! I've not heard of that happening before
Right now I regret picking up watercolor paper at $5 below. Its HQ or something and it is so, so bad. I really enjoyed previous sketchbooks I've picked up there and figured it would be fine for practice, so of course I picked up 3 of them. Okay, let me clarify that it's very bad for the way I usually paint which is with a ton of water. It's tolerable for pretty dry work with maybe 2 layers. It does take marker pretty nicely though and is thick enough for gouache so I'll get some use out of it, just not the use I got it for.
Paper can really make or break a painting experience with watercolour! I've also had to repurpose papers for other mediums for similar reasons.
Those 10B pencils have got to be a mislabeling or something. Those are crazy light compared to the others. How weird. I regret buying tubes of cheapo budget watercolors with the idea that I'd use them for practicing, because I have plenty of nice watercolor, too, and now I really prefer to use those so that I can get the true sense of how my painting is going (i.e., if there's a problem, is it me or the paint?). It was only maybe $20 worth of supplies, but I could have gotten a couple of high quality tubes for that instead!
That's an easy trap to fall for, I can relate! Sometimes cheaper things can really help with practicing more but other times its detrimental. I suppose part of it is learning about ourselves and what we do and don't need, which is worthwhile in the end
I'm not sure whether your block has something wrong with it or maybe just because it's a tiny block, I use the exact same block but mine is huge, almost a3 size and never had that issue 🤔 and so sorry to hear about the markers! I've never heard of markers that do that.
That could be possible, and may be worth testing out! I have used smaller 4x6in fluid 100 blocks without the same problem, though theirs are more thickly glued from my experience. A3 sounds both amazing and a little intimidating to paint on! I'd love to challenge myself with a larger size like that at some point.
With the XL graphite you can take them against some sandpaper and use them with a brush. Just a thought.

I think that yellow staining is caused by the paper not the markers? prolly not acid-free paper
The sketchbook I showed is acid free. I also tried the markers on other kinds of acid-free paper including 180 gsm Canson Bristol and 75 gsm marker paper. All of the swatches developed yellow staining too (edit: I only swatched the orange, yellow, red and green markers which are the ones that develop the stains)

Re the watercolor block, try using washi tape on the four sides to hold the paper on.

Thank you for the comment! The tape does help, enough to make painting less of a hassle 😊 I may message the company about it, especially since other people haven't had the same problem. The paper itself has been lovely to paint on though!
I have super cheap generic alcohol markers that also stain yellow.

Other ohuhu markers are awesome. They do not yellow at all. Its only this particular set. Its manufactured in a different way than their other markers. And boy does it show...

@@daenafae they really are awesome. The Oahu or especially Honolulu series. Now they sell these open stock and refills are coming soon. So its gonna become one of the best budget markers around.
I regret buying a set of the Koh-I-noor 1500 Hartmuth graphite pencils they are very scratchy.
I have found the grades (HB, B) of those pencils to be much harder than other brands of the same grade as well
.... With ohuhu markers-you still can use them, i mean: get rid of all the current ink inside --just use them up on the paper, it would take several sheets of paper for one marker to use all the ink up-- and then you could buy the better ink refills that ohuhu sells now.
It's definitely strange for it to stain that fast, it usually takes much longer. I wonder if they've just added too much solvent to certain batches.
But yellowing is a problem I have with other brands too like Prismacolor, Spectrum, basically everything except Copic. It just happens long after the sketchbook is done. It's worse with non-archival paper, because while markers aren't archival I think the composition of archival paper tends to resist the yellowing a little bit. I have some non-archival moleskine books from college colored with Prismas and the yellowing is pretty extreme.
Have you tried contacting Ohuhu? Wonder if they'd replace the set so you could see if it happens to another set too.
Thank you for the detailed comment! I'd heard markers aren't light-fast so I thought they would be okay for sketchbooking, and at worst would just fade over time. I didn't know about the staining until this happened and I started looking into it. Better to know now at least! I've used shinhan (mainly warm and cool greys) for a couple years and they've thankfully had no sign of staining checking through my old sketchbooks again.
The jarring thing for me with this staining is how fast it's happening. It's interesting to know your experience with different papers. I try to only use acid free papers, both sketchbooks and loose leaf. The staining with these has been the same on all of them, except my marker paper which had reduced staining.
See if you can get a replacement for the Ohuhu. It’s defective.
