Sketchbook Sessions 001 || Planning a watercolour character illustration
We're back in the sketchbook today to plan for an illustration I keep thinking about. To iron out the idea and identify any roadblocks I'm testing the idea in my sketchbook first. That way I can figure out what I need to adjust or keep the same, and what subjects I may want to study further before attempting the actual illustration! Of course, I was able to identify a couple things through this practice which I will talk through in the video. Once I work on those, I'm most likely going to pursue this as a watercolour painting 🙂 The main thing I want to explore in this illustration is the composition and how the arm of the character features in it.
In this sketching session I'm using a Roy...

    I've only been doing watercolours for a few months now so I dug up an old plastic open palette my mother used a few decades ago. I use that and an old circular plastic lid from a takeaway box for more mixing area. If I keep practising for a whole year, I might treat myself to a new palette that folds and closes. I've taken a break from watercolours this week to focus on colour pencils and cartoon-style sketching. I'd been painting real objects and birds, landscapes and cityscapes for a while, so it's been fun to do cartoon style illustrations! Surprisingly challenging!

      @sarahmaryslifeinpictures 7 дней назад

      These background noises are what makes it interesting because imo they create a sense of closeness and immediacy. Maybe I just don't like the chosen music-totally my problem 🙈 I just wanted to give some feedback.

      @sarahmaryslifeinpictures I appreciate the feedback honestly 💜 I'm editing next week's video at the moment and I'm not putting music in it now to guage how people like just background/mic noises. It's difficult to balance everyone's preferences with one solution, but hopefully there's a middle ground to be found!

    While this palette is not for me and how I manage my paints, I find it incredibly intreresting and fascinating. They did slanted wells but also gave you the option of shifting them around like full pans/half pans or even bigger pans. Very unique design, it's going to make a lot of people happy. (I have my main palette which is in a giant tin box and holds 160 colors, my travel palette which is a smaller tin that has 50 colors, and then two smaller porcelain travel palettes that are both 12 wells and have a split primary, greens, purples, and browns - not traditional split primaries, more niche and unique as I'm looking for interesting and not to be able to mix all the colors possible. And yeah, it's TWO separate and different sets of split primaries with no repeating colors because... of who I am as a person. And then I have a third 12 well porcelain palette with my most loved granulating colors. I like metal or porcelain, something about the texture of mixing on plastic gives me the ick.)

    • @daenafae
      @daenafae День назад

      Wow, thank you for sharing! The use of large colour palettes fascinates me. It's such a different way to how I paint, and seeing artists become so used to handling many pigments is impressive. Just off the top of my head it reminds me of watching Stephanie Law who uses lots of tiny wells of colours. Her paintings are gorgeous!

    I almost bought this palette for my QoR paints, but since I could not find the measurements, or any reviews on this, I got the metal palette. But now seeing it in video, I think for my use the metal palette is better suited, since it has more wells and is smaller. And those double-size pans are hilariously large. That would easily hold like 15ml tube of paint 😂

    • @daenafae
      @daenafae 8 дней назад

      Haha that's true, I wonder how much paint can fit in them 🤔 The palette itself is quite large, I couldn't imagine using the 30-well sized palette myself! It's great you've found a palette that suits you ☺️ It looked good in your palette video.

  • @jc-aguilar

    What a nice palette! I was wondering why you wouldn’t use this one as your main palette. Too big?

    • @daenafae
      @daenafae 7 дней назад

      Good question! To answer you in short here it's a combination of: - The size. You are right it's a little too big for what I want in a main palette. I like the flexibility of using the main palette at home and outside. This feels a touch too big for travelling and using outside, for my own preferences. - How long pigments stay in the main palette. I change my main palette colours less frequently, so the ability to move them around easily (while convenient) wouldn't be needed as often. Thank you for the question! I'll make a note to talk about that as well in the video where I set up the palette.

    • @jc-aguilar
      @jc-aguilar 7 дней назад

      @ thank you so much for the answer. It makes sense, in that case this palette could be useful as the main one if you are still new and trying to figure your own palette.

    Can i use sketchbook for writing with pen?

    • @daenafae
      @daenafae 7 дней назад

      How well the paper reacts to ink depends on the type of pen used for writing. The paper is good with ballpoint pens (like BIC) and more "dry" pens, but "wet" pens feather and bleed.

    A very similar thing happened to me and my Leuchtturm sketchbook! I got the big square one and took it to a life drawing class. This life drawing class has a tradition of everyone putting their favourite pieces from the session in the middle of the room on the floor for everyone to look at and see how everyone draws differently/uses different mediums etc. I'd not been often, was new to life drawing, but decided to be brave this time. Unfortunately, it was the session before Christmas, so the break time in the middle of the session had wine and snacks, and long story short, a tipsy/more rowdy member of the class knocked their entire glass of red wine all over my sketchbook =( I'll be honest, I rage-quitted that sketchbook, I was so frustrated (plus i really dislike the smell of wine personally, and my sketchbook definitely smelled of it for weeks later). Tbh you've reminded me to try going back to it; maybe it doesn't smell any more and enough time has passed for it to not sting as much (it was Xmas 2023). I hope you manage to enjoy your sketchbook despite the stains, the work you've done currently is beautiful (your line work for the snake hair woman is incredible!! How did you do that in graphite?!)

    • @daenafae
      @daenafae 7 дней назад

      Oh my goodness, wine would be heartbreaking! I'm so sorry! How is the sketchbook now, if you've gone back to check it? Thank you 💜 It takes a lot of time for me to make graphite look like that, because I build up the pencil softly and gradually even for the lineart. It's a real exercise in patience, but I love the process at the same time. You may have heard of the artist Wylie Beckert, she's one of the inspirations behind me growing an appreciation for layering and the soft effects it produces!

    • @canidcourier

      @daenafae the sketchbook finally doesn't smell of wine any more! 🥳 It's still very stained, but without the smell irritating me I could work with it. It only has 11 double page spreads left so I might be able to figure something out (it was the first sketchbook I didn't abandon after the first 4-5 spreads, making wine-gate more tragic!) That Chocobo sticker looks so good on that mint green! I think I would do the same, use the more damaged pages for practice and clean page for finished artworks. Grass green is someting that is impossible to get out in dog fur, so I imagine it sticks really well on paper. Also, if paper is thick, you can wash over it bit darker color and paint over with goauche. Or even gesso the pages, but it may make it bit wrinkly.

    A few years back, i got my first etchr sketchbook. I was super inspired and emediantly got to work on a mildly ambitious (for me at the time) piece called "lightbringer". I had plans for making a serene woman walking through a forest and where she touched, light would come. My( 3at the time) daughter saw i was inking it and decided to "help" by coloring in her face.....i was devastated, but decided to finish the work regardless and actually like it as it is now with the scribbled face. Im sure others will suggest you try and incorporate the smudges. It can be a fun challenge that pushes you out of your comfort zone, but i get the frustration you must feel now. Im glad to see your work inside is still easily visible and am interested in seeing what you end up doing with it. Thanks for the relatable upload and best of luck with salvaging it.

    It's a bit sad that your new sketchbook fell, but I'm glad you're ok and that some of your drawings survived. Honestly, I wouldn't mind the "mud" if it happened to me. Yes, it's annoying, but you can remove some when it's dry and try an eraser carefully. And maybe you can incorporate some of the stains into your future drawings. It depends. It's good that some pages survived untouched. Maybe you can use those for more finished pieces. And others for exploration and play? The snake lady is a very cool idea and design! Would love to see your review, I know you're thorough.

They were the last company to still produce the original pigment in watercolour, and their supply ran out on 13th September 2017 after 17 years according to their website. So long ago now 😱

    I've seen some people soak their watercolour papers before use to stretch them out fully. Does that wash the sizing off? If so, could that make your expired paper useable again?

    • @daenafae
      @daenafae Месяц назад

      The process of stretching will remove some sizing, but it's normally recommended you try to prevent too much being lost. If you soak the paper too long and it removes too much of the sizing it will increase the absorbency of the paper, and may in turn not be pleasant to paint on either. It could be worth a try on unmounted paper if it had already gone bad just to see what happens, since there's no fallout if it's ruined further 🤔 The boards that went bad are paper mounted to a board so I'm not sure how soaking for extended periods may affect the board and the method used to adhere the paper to it. One way to find out I suppose!

    Does a kneaded eraser ever lose its sticky kneadableness? (if that makes sense) Do you prefer the stick or kneaded erasers? Love how organized it is. I've got a pouch full of pencil stubs I've accumulated over 15 years 😅

      I don't think so but it can get all dirty and u eventually have to replace it

      They change texture very slightly once they start to get overloaded with graphite, but that can take quite a long time. I like both for different reasons. The kneaded eraser gives me more control over how much graphite I do or don't lift away, but the stick erasers are more efficient when I know I just want to get rid of all the graphite in an area.

    The contrary works too. Print a digital artwork and use them with transfert methods on a canvas then paintover it. Can be an inceptive result of trad to digi to trad. For example you might like an accurate guideline for a painting, like geometric shapes or just something that was challenging to do traditionnally on first hand. Then you digitalise your lineart, work on complex shapes to make then perfect, transfert them back on canvas (Gelli plate, transfert medium) and paint over, then take a professionnal photo and do prints of them so you now have an original (trad/digi project) and some prints on the side.

    Its nice to do an inked lineart and do an abstract set painting for underpainting, background, textures or accents, then continue on photoshop or procreate. Depended on the desired result, it may be useless to do an inked lineart for more realistic illustration. Still, I'm with you, its really nice to work on paper. Also, I like to work in public setting: a cafe or park even at the bar. Its more intuitive and easy to bring a sketchbook and a pen around. Digital art always felt more reclusive to me, but maybe I should try an IPad (Im on Cintiq 13hd, not a standalone).

    This was interesting. I didn't know you used Clip Studio too, as the algorithm has mainly recommended your sketchbook videos to me lately. I'm not an artist (I wish!) but I'm definitely an art enjoyer and teaching myself pencil and pen sketching as well as watercolours (landscapes, birds and so on but not people bc i find them too scary for now) off RUclips recently, everyday when I get home from work. I don't have Clip Studio but maybe I'll try it out someday though the layout and colouring process on it feels intimidating from what little I've seen in videos. How many years have you been practising traditional and digital art? I've only used Procreate once on a friends laptop and the undo button was certainly a fun feature!

      @daenafae Месяц назад

      There are a lot of options out there for digital now, which is nice! In my experience there's a learning curve to any software, but that can be an exciting thing to consider too. I started using Clip Studio in 2022. I'd say I started "seriously" learning art as a whole in 2021, but I have enjoyed drawing since I was little. I remember how I felt as a beginner, how intimidating everything felt, and how easy it was to get lost in things. Some of the most important skills and concepts beyond anything else I've learnt so far have been developing patience with myself, and comparing myself with my own progress (every so often laying out everything I've made chronologically and then considering what I enjoyed, what materials/subjects I liked, where I have improved, what I could work on next, etc) helped me a lot. Just as it can be inspiring, it can also be incredibly easy to get lost in what other people's progress or art is like, so the latter really helped me "reset" and re-center myself as I built my self confidence in art more. As individuals we all have different things that will help us though, and I always encourage people to find what works for them! From one artist to another, have fun and keep finding the joy in it :)

      @@daenafae Thank you for the encouragement! I'm actually a physics grad student by training, but my real ambition in life is to be as well rounded as possible because I have so many interests and art is a big one. I've kept a folder of my watercolour works the past few months and I can definitely see the progress! It's very heartening. I know everyone says to use 100% cotton paper but the price makes me too scared to paint freely so I mostly stick with 25-30% cotton or even just wood pulp paper because I'm able to paint more freely on it, even if the paper dries out much faster and doesn't blend as easily. The first few times I painted birds I traced their outlines but I'm trying to learn to draw them from scratch now.

    I love veiled lady mushrooms, they're so spooky looking! And your human design for it is so pretty! I like to sketch traditionally too when I can, it saves me so much time trying to work it out digitally (where more often than not I get stuck if an 'ctrl + z' loop lol)

    • @daenafae
      @daenafae Месяц назад

      Thank you! That's interesting to hear about the ctrl + z loop, and how traditional sketching helps you with that. Oftentimes people assume the opposite in that digital is supposed to speed things up. Yet what we may need as an individual can be quite different!
