It's finally here! Ultimate General: American Revolution is now available in early access, and I've played it for an extensive amount of time to give you my review of the early access version of this brand new strategy game.
It is so much fun to see that indie developers are cooking up experiences like these, a game that even at this early stage shows true potential, especially in its format and core mechanics. UGAR features not just a real-time campaign map, but actual field battles on the battlefield where you get to control your armies, AND fully tactical naval battles, meaning this is something as rare as a hybrid between Total War and Paradox grand strategy games.
In this video, I not only give you my opinions on this early access version, but I show you some awesome gameplay, talk about the features, and tell you what I think needs some work at this stage, and what could be done better in the future.

CA deserves to go down the toilet. They'd be rolling in fans and money if they made historical sequels but instead the bean counters are forcing them to churn out lazy content for a consistent YoY revenue stream. I look forward to their shocked pikachu expression when an indie developer buries them for good.

Eh I'm done with TW to be honest. I own all the games, from the 1st to the latest (bar pharaoh) and literally every DLC. I bought Rome Remastered, and I bought both the Android remakes... But I've played so little of them. I was just hoping the entire time that I'd fall back in love with the series, but never happened.
I still am a huge fan of the series, but now I'm done with it. I feel completely ignored by the people making those games now. They just don't care. There's no love. Now it's just one big operation to churn out profitable products, that's it.
Im just gonna move on to something new. I've been left waiting by this company for fuckin years, I have absolutely no trust or faith in their abilities.... This new game in the video looks great tho, I'm super keen for it 🙂

Now I kinda understand why C.A long ago, when they made the "first Total War mod summit" and everything, not only didn't invite Darth Vader but also bashed him on the forums and all..saying that his mods were "fake" and didn't make the things that he claimed it did..
The real truth is they were AFRAID of him, C.A knew that he was the real deal and now it has been proven once more
Ultimate General American Revolution is the TRUE SUCESSOR of the Total War series

I can sorta see where people are coming from about him and his skillsets but it also comes off in a peculiar, propaganda-esque way. Like people putting in factors like if he wrote the programs that do things like EditSF (not that one, just the tools to make mods etc) and it comes off in a very blatant sort of "smear campaign" kind of appearance the longer it's stared at. Regardless if he earned himself the critique through personality alone, I think it's massively unwarranted.

I like how the battles look like a cute kid between Total war and Assault Squad, and so happy to see ship battles being included with time and effort since they were some of my favorite aspects of the TW games.

@@Tinylittledansonman it depends on what do you need from battles, tactical/gameplay options or stunning visuals, personally I am more of a fan of the former and this game (as well as it's predecessors like UG: ACW and Age of Sail) offer plenty of it, as well as superb immersion and sense of scale (especially the American Civil War - tens of thousands of men under your command are really cool to lead), while TW excels at visuals mostly, but fails to deliver mechanics and tactical possibilities and is rather lackluster in scale (being stuck in 4k vs 4k battles for decades)

This kind of mechanic has huge potential in medieval/ancient settings where civil wars and treachery were a major factor. As someone whose first total war game was Empire Total War this game makes the gunpowder lover in me excited in a way that I haven't felt since FoTS. I love how the game rather than being a straight clone of Total War does something different with the fog of war around your army, the dispatches from your other scattered units, and choosing whether to jump in on a battle really makes you feel like well an actual general rather than a seeing and almighty god-king commanding your country and armies from above. Considering the state of grand strategy games sphere being dominated by Civ, Paradox, or Creative Assembly this game looks like it might shape up into the underdog that will bring new life and innovation into this stagnating genre. I wish the dev team good luck and I can't wait to see what they can do!

@@hereandnow3156 I'm planning on doing it in godot, I'm still just scribbling mechanics and logic down for now. The game is a turn based strategy with a hexgrid map. My two ideas are: "it takes turns for a new order to be received by far away units" and "units ping their current position and state back to the commander (pinging takes turns, so the game map is always a few turns out of date to simulate the fog of war)". Hopefully, these two mechanics will make commanding a big army feel like controlling a slow lumbering giant.

  • @Uberdude6666
    @Uberdude6666 10 месяцев назад +3

This looks like the Total War I always wanted, in terms of features, mechanics etc. I particularly like that you have this FoW around your general, while also controlling the rest of the state! I assume it works by choosing one character at the start, then that is the one you're "stuck" with throughout the game? It wouldn't make sense if you could recruit more generals down the line, I think... It seems like a more fleshed out and thought through version of the "Lord-system" in TW Warhammer.
As for future development of this game, I'm a bit surprised they went for American revolution as the setting, this game-formula seems so perfect for the Napoleonic wars! This "General in the field who also was the Head of state-thing" seems to be exactly how Napoleon ran things? I can only assume it gets more difficult to deal with FoW as your empire grows. Would be cool if they added in some mechanics to represent how time and distance can distort information as well. Imagine if you play as Napoleon, and are stuck in the middle of Russia in winter, the reports from Paris about the day-to-day affairs would probably arrive too late for your orders to be relevant by the time they arrive back in Paris. Maybe there can also be a chance for the reports to be inaccurate due to your ministers being afraid to tell you about negative developments etc.? Maybe they can also add like tech-options or something, where you can choose to have a very "hands on" government-approach, or you can choose to delegate more responsibility to ministers etc. This can also introduce a gameplay-element in which you have to balance your own authority with delegating responsibility: Keep too much power for your self, and you will simply be unable to keep up with everything that is going on in your empire. Delegate too much power, and your ministers might try to usurp your position or something.
Ofc. there are other examples of "Hero-kings" who led armies in the field while also running their state. Frederick the Great, Alexander the Great, basically every monarch in feudal Europe. But I think Napoleonic era is where they developed a lot of the administrative infrastructure of the modern state, so it would be cool to sort of develop your nation from "Running your empire from the saddle" to a modern state. Maybe there could also be different bonuses to different playstyles: You can have more direct battlefield-bonuses by having your general/faction leader in the field, fighting battles. But then you can also choose to have him "garrisoned" in your capital city, granting administrative and economic/trade-bonuses etc.
I can only hope Game-Labs watch your videos and read the comments, but I'm sure they also have a good plan for developing this game series:D

I play the game its fun but it needs work a lot of work and i would not go so far to say that is the nightmare of TW. ETW has awesome overhaul campaign mods that make the game awesome to play like ETW2 or Imperial Splendour even TAR mod that is great and Napoleon Total War is what ETW could be far better than ETW and with Darthmod its outstanding.. You have the Full 3D units that are very beautiful you have a musket mod sound and drummers - fife sounds and music the Napoleons Campaigns are very fine and the coalition campaigns great too with DM again. If you go to the Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai now they are making 2 awesome Victorian Era mods TWFOTS Series with new Custom TWFOTS maps of Spain - France and North Africa huge maps and the Fall of the Dragon Empire that you play and relive 50 days of Peking - Beijing and they have made Korea map - South east China's map and Manjuria with the already great Japan's map and there is an another WIP mod for Medieval TW 2 mod that they have made all the hole map of the earth Europe - North and South America - All of Africa, China and more that you play in Victoria era too there and its awesome WIP too. So UGAR its the best experience for the AR sure but it needs a lot of work and patches, we will see if it will have mods support when the full game will arrive in a year and needs Steam support for sure. Most of us and i could not live with out TW games and thank God we have them.. Ok they have made some bad dessions with the Troy - Pharao and Warhamer games but this does not erase the past that they have made awesome and so modable games for a huge historical warfare periods to enjoy and play. This game needs a lot of work to be done to say that its a TW killer that i don't think will happen IMO.

I'd rather see Empire Remastered, Medeival 2 Remastered as well as Shogun 2 Remastered and I'd rather they do a remaster for those games than play trash sequels.

The game looks great, the changes to the "campaign" map is amazing and love how you can reenforce a battle and let it either play out automatically or manually.
I am a fan of their games since Ultimate general Gettysburg, but the ultimate general civil war really got my into their games, loved to customize my armies and play mission upon mission growing my army.
Age of sails i rarely played due to time, but i am enticed now to reinstall it awaiting this game.
I hope in the future they can expand the time periods, i think unit variety is limited in this time but still combat and campaign mechanics look great so the moment its on steam its practically an instant buy for me.

I love the look and feel of the game and I'm glad the battles and army sizes are scaled down from UGCW to more accurately reflect the relatively small scale of the American Revolution. I hope that Darth and his team add a wounded soldier mechanic, field hospitals, doctors, etc. as a way to recuperate some of your losses after battle. I'll certainly be buying this with my next VA disability check haha!!!

There have been several other rts games released that you could say were "shots across the bow" against CA. This game looks like it could be the first to score a hit! Is this going to be a Total War killer? No, but if CA don't change their business mindset quickly, I wouldn't be surprised if this game is looked back upon as one of the first domino's to cause its collapse (and this is coming from a big historical Total War fan/player).

Loving the channel so far man keep up the good work on these informational videos. And so far I think the game has a lot to offer at least more than just total war does. It seems to have a lot more strategy than recruit soldiers with better stats than the old ones you just had so you can pretty much stomp any enemy army you come across. That and the campaign map is beutiful and relays a lot of useful information to the player and has actually interesting quests that you can pursue.

But it runs Ultimate Admiral Age of Sail well enough. But I guess I'd rather not spend $50.00 on a an early access model until im sure it will work...

The comparison to total war is expected, but not really fair. The Ultimate General series completely blows total war out of the water. These games are innovative, balanced, and dynamic. Total war is complacent, clunky, and boring.
Ive played over 1000 hrs of UG: civil war and Ive been waiting for this release. Nerd boner. Let me rave about the AI in this game. The ai is SMART. it will adapt to your strategy and theres no real way to cheese it. You think your cheesing the ai then realize that those were legitimate tactics employed in those days, which makes it very satisfying to win. In total war, you win by abusing the clunkiness of the ai and game mechanics. And this hasn't changed throughout the series. Maybe empire was better, i never played darthmod.
I cannot recommend this game enough. Any fan of mil-strategy games should give this a play. Warning, you might get hooked.
Make sure to install J&P mod for UG:civil war. Provides a more realistic and balanced experience.

Total War ABSOLUTELY needs some competition. As the years have gone by they continue to pump out more and more basic games lacking significant innovation or player focused mechanics. It's all "faction pack" this or "blood pack" that. The RTS grand strategy genre needs new blood or it'll continue to be a stale heap of microtransactions.

I've been watching a couple of game reviews from different RUclipsrs, and I'm excited. What's really funny is that I currently serve on a Naval ship named after the leader of the Revolution (George Washington) and what is even funnier is that the English are on the same pier with us (HMS Prince of Wales). It is quite awkward when they ask what our ship's name is.

I hope once they've gotten the main campaign fixed up that they'll have some expansion campaigns, like the war of 1812 with a playable Tecumseh, or imagine a Bolivar campaign where you have to fight off the Spanish then try to hold Gran Colombia together.
I'm just thinking of the Americas, but there are any number of places you could set this, obviously this was the time of Napoleon for example. Having said that, I will note that I would not be as excited for a Napoleon expansion just because I feel that era of history is already well represented in games (not to mention the new Ridley Scott movie) as opposed to the scenarios I listed above.
I think that an American Civil War game would be better served as sequel given that Civil War tactics were much more akin to the trench warfare of WWI then it was to the line formations of the revolution. I'm not sure which game the Mexican American war would better fit in, but probably this one.

It looks really pretty, but there is one thing I miss. there was a 2006 game called Pro Libertate, which featured the American Revolution, as well as an anti-Habsburg revolution in Europe. Both the campaign map and the battles were turn-based, and graphically it's very dated. However, what was amazing is their attention to logistics! This is what I miss from modern titles. In modern games you have to pay your troops from a global resource pool, but not in Pro Libertate. There you actually had to take care of how much a region can supply the troops therein, how much supply the troops can store, and how supply flows in from and through neighboring regions. An enemy army blocking some regions could constrict your supply flow. It was difficult to actually take control over settlements (you can't afford to garrison every village, and they don't switch allegiance merely for moving your army there for a few turns), but you could raid undefended settlements with cavalry, and then they would temporarily stop providing supplies to the enemy. Also, your militia needed to go home for harvest season every year.

I really liked Ultimate General: Civil War, but it really was missing a actual map function. the battles were fun, but you had a very linear progression, so it didn't lend the "what if?" values that total war Empire or Napoleon did.
Being able to draw the war out, or finish it faster than normal - should be an option. I love the battles... but yeah, this one seems to be improving a lot on the previous entries (UG: Civil War, and UG: Gettysburg) Both good games, but there's a clear and distinct path of how the dev(s) have learned and gotten better at making their games.
I truly look forward to seeing what they have in store for us.

It looks REALLY good, but I really don't fancy the setting, thats the only problem I think.
Nothing against the setting, just don't tickle my imagination or history nerd side at all.
For Americans it's probobly a pretty deep topic when studying history, but for most others it's just a footnote in the history books while other more grand stuff happens, like it's mentioned along with other rebellions against the brittish empire slowly leading to it's decline.
If it'd been the Napoelonic wars, or 30 year wars, or just a much broader setting like "Total War Empire" that spans a few 100 years including the american revolution, then yes I'd been so exstatic over this.
But I do love the style of the game, and gameplay seems really good none the less!
Worth noting thought is I think the real time aspect of the campaign map is likely to not work as good on a grander scale like if it was just, Empire total war 2, really cool for more focused gameplay though, I would love to see this style gameplay for something like 30 year war, as that all takes place mostly within central europe, an area smaller then the eastern states, but with so much more and bigger battles, many different factions and all that.

Ive enjoyed UGCW and UAAS. I hope that this does a good job of making the campaign less like UGCW (on rail road tracks with set battles ahead of you) and takes some of that state of the world effects like in Total War games. You wipe an enemy army out and an area is vulnerable. period. Im gonna be curious about the naval elements in light of historical context

Well you got me. I think the game looks fantastic. I loved UG-civil war but the logistics was a headache and there wasn't as much freedom. Every battle is scripted in a sense. What I see here in this game is more eventful and meaningful game play. An AI who may have you on the ropes. Understanding true logistics. And to truly understand the different types of troops.
Age of Sail is good but wasn't my cup of tea for some reason. This game has it all down.
