Now that that's out of the way, I thought I'd do something special this day and month! For the month of May, we're doing a series on Star Wars games, beginning with none other than Star Wars: Empire at War, also known as the best Star Wars strategy game of all time, and one that definitely deserves a sequel! Empire at War was fantastic when it released in 2006, and is still a unique marvel today. But what exactly makes it so great? That's what we're here to find out!

Remember, THIS GAME CAME OUT IN 2006! 2000-2010 truly was the golden age of gaming. And its Arguably BETTER THEN TOTAL WAR these days. And they KEPT SUPPORTING IT even till this day, they even reenabled Multiplayer. (Steam version only) The most unique thing about Empire At War is that it combines GROUND AND SPACE battles, in REAL TIME with TACTICAL BATTLES. (seriously this is just Total War in Real Time)
The base game is grate, still has a bug or 2 but with the support the game continues to get (i hope) im sure they will eventually be fixed. the MODS are where its at though, Fall of the Republic if your looking for Clone Wars, Awakening of the Rebellion if your looking for something similar yet different.
Then their is EAW Remake.....haven't played it yet but, it changes ALOT of things about the game that i feel makes it different from EAW is supposed to be. BUT THOSE GRAPHICS, the game never looked SO GOOD.
Jay, I think I must agree with you. Even though we have truly amazing titles from the last decade and this one as well, say The Witcher 3, God of War, Dark Souls 1-3 and Elden Ring, the games from 2000-2010 just hit different… so fricking good, rarely was I disappointed, and I KEEP PLAYING THEM 15 years later! It’s insane, man. Will definitely have to check out those mods.

@@hoplon88 Im quite serious actually. They are basically the same thing, obviously EAW is a RTS so its not quite the same but they are very similar.
Total War, Turn Based Campaign map with Real time tactical battles.
Empire At War, Real time campaign map (their is a pause button for both Campaign and the battles), real time tactical battles.
You build buildings, recruit units, you get income every "week" to spend on units and buildings. You even have hero units just like TW WH but they are far more balanced and the AI is ACTUALLY CONFIDENT unlike TWs AI which has barely improved over the past 10 years.
And just like TW the mods just make the game better, but the game itself is already good in its own right.
Mass Effect 2 was released in January 2010. No doubt the capstone on the best gaming era.

Recommend you space invade with only a wings, you are basically unstoppable
guessing the 79 is because mods aren´t counted and it is those mods that make the game have this long life. i am still playing the game after 16 years because of those mods and new versions of my favorite mods have just been updated. Always a good thing

This game still holds to this day. Whats even better is the modding community. The 3 major mods "Republic at war" , "the Clone Wars" , "Thrawn's revange" gave it new life.
I've sunk so many hours into Thrawns Revenge and Fall of the Republic. Playing my New Republic campaign as I write this.
Don't forget the remake mod
Republic at war and the clone wars mod are really outdated, fall of the republic is the new one plus you forgot about aotr and the remake mod.

As I’m sure other mention the modding community has kept this game alive. Modern huge overalls that might as well be sequels like Awakening of the Rebellion, Thrawns Revenge, Fall of the Republic (best prequel era mod IMO) , And the “Remake” mod. Sincerely despite this never getting an official sequel, try out some of those mods and you will not be disappointed!

@@AndysTake also apparently there is a possibility of a sequel sometime soon, although EA's still got exclusivity so we gotta wait until that's gone first I think. also awakening of the rebellion (AOTR for short) is a lot of fun as a starter mod since it takes the galactic civil war setting from the original and just fleshes it out a ton

I am a bit late here but the fall of the republic mod is incredible and that all of the mods in general make the game one of my favorites to this day
Funny fact, this was the first game I played as a kid and it’s still high on my list due to have good and replayable it is.
I always thought it would be cool to start a game as a leader in the Clone Wars, and then after Order 66 to be forced to chose a side in the Galactic Civil war... taking some of those resources from the previous conflict with you.

that exists to some extent in fall of the republic, it allows you to chose who you want to side with during order 66 and if you side with palpatine you start getting imperial star destroyers (called imperator class in game) sadly it doesn't go fully into the galactic civil war era

This was from made when great games were made. Before EA ruined it all. Before micro transactions. Starwars empire at war was amazing....lve never seen a strategy game as good ..can't believe it hasn't been remade....everyone would buy it.

I feel like space battles were more fun and more spectacular but land battles gave much more tactical options and let you win against overwelming forces

its just true, that Video games in the 00's gave us more out of the box.
so many games in the last decade and some change have been ridden with mtx and content reserved for a future payment.
you're right :/ I really miss the days without microtransactions and excessively long dev times.. we got massive new games almost every year or two from the same devs, now that often takes twice that time, and even then with so many more bugs and lacking features, it seems.
If petroglyph could release a new updated version of the game people would go absolutely nuts. The game engine really slows things down and it’s a significant bottleneck. The modding community for this game has kept it alive for so long. The 4.0 release of the galactic civil war mod, Thrawns revenge, the Republic at war mods, show how much potential the game has
You’re so right. I REALLY hope that we get fabled new Star Wars strategy game soon, and that it’s an Empire at War-like, but even more ambitious

I just wanted to say that this game was a big slice of my childhood and Star Wars is my Fandom of choice (although I do enjoy many!).
It was nice to come home after my trip to see this video! I used to love scrolling through the star wars website for hours as a kid!
I would love to watch you play one of the new mods! I only dipped my toes recently but it is so good!
By the way, you asked if the drink I mentioned was Japanese or not on a previous video. I was enjoying a grape juice with bits of aloe while watching this video. You can get it only in the vending machines here!

@@AndysTake, the longer I stay the more good ones I find that I like lol. Although my usual drink is now green tea or black tea with milk which I picked up from an English friend when I was living in Galicia, Spain.

@@AndysTake I also only just downloaded one of them recently. They are now so easy to download through the workshop on steam. You essentially just press one button and subscribe to the mod and boom. Updated visuals and gameplay.

One thing you forgot to say: It got an update around a year ago from the devs for the modders .... and the mods are just outright better then most "modern" RTS´s
An amazing game to check out would be X-wing alliance from the 90s.
There is a huge community modding project for that game that has redone basically the entire game at this point, integrated head tracking, improved the engine, and more. On top of that there is a team that brought the old Tie Fighter flight game into this new updated X-wing alliance engine, and are working on a re-imagining of the tie fighter campaign with much bigger battles taking advantage of modern technology.
Another weakness of the Imperial ships is the MC30c frigate. The Rebel A.I loves to spam that ship lol.

It's not the stock campaigns that make this game great, it's the mods. Mods like Thrawns Revenge have been continuously developing and tweaking this game ever since it was releassed all the way up to this day. There are story campaigns that when played in sequence can cove all the way from the Clone Wars right the way up to shortly before the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. There are also newer multi-player modes but the single player campaigns are what show the real strengths of this game. Also some of the mod campaigns actually manage to make the ground combat fun which is something that the original never really managed to do.

@@AndysTake Try it, it will blow you away from how much deeper the Galactic Conquest experience becomes. If you want to see empire at war completely changed and with 2016 Visuals take a look at the Remake mod. There are so many things, that were thought impossible, achieved by the modding community of this game.
This game made me fall of my chair. How in the name of all that is gaming goodness can a 16 year old game stand the test of time this well?

Hi Andy! Just recently I begun watching your videos and its incredible the good variety of games you cover. I remember seeing an old friend playing this game and thinking how cool it was, but at the end I never knew how It was called and I started playing other RTS like Warcraft, and just forgot about this one. Now that I've seen the video I'll probably give it a try!

Some of you may not know this, but this game was a sort of successor to Star Wars Rebellion 1998. I don’t know why we haven’t got a new land and space Star Wars strategy game with modern graphics. It could be so great.
It's because strategy games have lost popularity throughout the years. for example total war: warhammer 3 is at the time the most ambitious strategy game ever made, but it does not have a large audience.

I hope you plan to review Star Wars Rebellion. I know the game gets a lot of hate but it is my favorite and I'd love to see a modernized version of the game.
And with the expansion pack you could play as the Consortium or the criminals.
This game, og battlefront and age of empires was my childhood for PC games. On PlayStation it was gran Turismo games.

When I first played Empire at War, I loved the space combat and tried to skip the fighting on the worlds.
With the present perspective, I can say that I was the Covenant.
Nowadays, I just play Sins of a Solar Empire Interregnum mod.
I’m on my first playthrough of this game now, basically a blind playthrough of galactic conquest as the empire, all 42 planets. (I did play the tutorials of course, and no mods yet) and my strategy is that the rebels can’t take planets if every choke point and planet is protected by a big fuck off fleet. I just reached day 30 in the war, and had my first engagement with the main rebel fleet. It was Home one, a few blockade runners, two missile cruisers, and a few nebulon Bs. I showed up with two ISDs, 3 victory class SDs, 3 acclimators, and like 8 patrol craft. Rebel fleet didn’t stand a chance.
At the moment of this post the game is on special at steam $6.99 is there is a good time to get it is now.
i still play this....just sub at the empire at war remake mod in steam and enjoy

I thought in History they taught us that the Rebels are the bad guys, maybe not, just kidding, I believe that Rebels or Rebellions in a common sense, are good, or there are reasons behind it, lol! But I'm not a Star Wars Fan, but I love it! I wanna buy this game in 2022 and thank you for this review video! :D
well, if you wanna be technical the rebellion blew up a massive space station which was being worked on by MANY MANY civilian workers, ig the rebels (lorewise) are attempting to do the right thing for the right reasons but still sometimes make mistakes, the empire is just your standard oppresive regime with evil/militaristic leadership. ig they both aren't really good and it just comes down the lesser of the two evils if you wanna think about it like that haha.... i would get this game its a great star wars game, especially with mods.
Wish they remake this or do and second one but I can see developers now messing it up for fans with pay walls

I still play this gome just modded and I totally forgot that the empire has the Arc Hammer in the base game. :D If you looking forward to play this game I can recommend Awakening of the Rebellion(Really hard but so cool mod) and Empire at War Expanded:Thrawn's Revenge(Post ednor Imperial Civil war era mod with tons of unique factions and nice heros+mechanics) lastly Empire at War Expanded: Fall of The Republic(Clone wars era mod from the Thrown's Revenge team,ths one is new and not as polished as Thrawn's Revenge but still one of the best mods),there are EaW Reworked but I didn't try that one so I can't say an opinion about it.
Well, the title states "empire at war in 2022". This is why I was pretty disappointed of the fact you didn't really mention the amaazing mods which truly kept this game alive. I think pretty much noone plays the game now for its intended purpose but rather for the literally amazing mods which people like corey loses gave us. Nonetheless good video, was just really disappointed.
Try out Thrawn's revenge/Fall of the Republic/Republic at war, some of my favourite mods
Empire at War had the battle mode that Star Wars Rebellion needed, and Rebellion had the grand RTS elements that EaW needed
The mods for this game are amazing too thrawn revenge and awakening of the rebellion are top tier

Try Thrawns Revenge with the ship and troop mods and larger Galaxy. It’s amazing.

But seriously, ISD and MonCal cruisers aren't that good. They only have Turbolaser and Ion cannon batteries, which are only good against cruiser class ships and up. They're useless against fighter and bomber craft. And thus you get a stone paper scissors type of game. Bomber>capital ships>cruiser/frigate>bomber.
Star Wars Supremacy is still light years ahead of any other Star Wars strategy game...

I got this game as a kid and quite honestly... It is probably the game I played the most as a youngling. It would had been Battlefront 2 if I didn't lose that disk in a motel... Long story... :((
Also a game I have massive nostalgia for.
I am glad that Empire at War could help me cope with that loss and quite honestly even surpass the nostalgia in a way. Battlefront 2 is more illusive nostalgia as a lot of my thoughts are related to missing the game. Meanwhile Empire at War could run on most computers I owned so it became a go to game when going on trips and around the place and since my dad is a fan of driving and camping trips... This means Empire at War almost feels like a massive part of my childhood. And I honestly think that I can't even imagine what I would be like without it.
I was young. I am a 2001 kid... I am also a fan of Lego and stuff and this year with the release of the Tie Interceptor set had me pog facing real hard. I haven't bought it yet... But EaW made me love the Tie Interceptor even more than the original Tie Fighter and find the sight of a Tie Interceptor more nostalgic for me than any other Star Wars ship. Because I played FoC quite a lot. And when people play this they ask me what my opinion on Thrawns Revenge or this or that mod is... And quite honestly the truth is... While I imagine those mods are GREAT... I have just been playing vanilla mostly. 😂
I dabbled in Republic at War mod before the workshop update. And I have even made my own personal custom maps. Theed City, which is something I made for when I play Republic at War but it works on unmodded too of course, and Tantive IV... Which is a land battle inside the Tantive IV... With vehicles. It is a little nonsensical but I think personally I love the level design I made.
It's an asymmetric push map with the very start of the level having the iconic blasting down of the door scene. Not perfectly accurate of course but still I could show and impress my friends with it. The corridors are not as... Smooth as I wanted but unfortunately the map editor has some limitations when it comes to that. Either way it works pretty decently. There is also a little spawn for the Consortium if you want to do a little bit of trolling. 😁
I have forever wanted to do something similar for the Battle of Hoth but unfortunately I think the main issue is Hoth is pretty flat and the main issue is you can't really make trenches that easily in the editor. But either day... One day I will and I will then consider actually sharing them online I guess.
All and all... Autistic Comfort media / Out of Ten. It may not be the GOAT game. But it's my personal GOAT.
One of the rare times we got Star Wars RTS game for some reason. I don't recall any other SW rts beside this and Battlegrounds, which let's be honest was just reskin of Age of Empires 2. Don't get me wrong, we played the shit out of that one back in the day, but even back then it was obvious to us they just did reskin of AOE2.
SWEAW in a nutshell:
Rebels: Mon Mothma wont shut up long enough to defeat the empire. i lost 3 planets to the death star before she stfu so i could acquire Luke.
Empire: Just ignore Tarkin he's an idiot.
Zann: Aww your loyal to how cute #Corruption.
Thrawn's Revenge Mod: Nuke It From Orbit its the only way to be sure.
Sadly I never played "Star Wars: Enpire at War", no time for that.
I always liked playing "Star Trek:Armada" though.

"Sad" Fact: Petroglyph, the dev team who made Empire at War and Forces of Corruption also wanted to make an "EaW 2", but since the SW licence was on EA's hands at the time, they got refused, and right now they've been working on a new game (not Star Wars) and it's unlikely that we'll be seeing an EaW style SW game any time soon, but it's very clear they want to do it, since they still release updates for EaW
Also, since you're a Prequels guy, I recommend you to try Fall of the Republic, an FoC mod made by the people who made Thrawn's Revenge
I always play galactic conquest as the empire, I built the Death Star and destroyed every planet, had a fleet of 78 star destroyers, 176 victory class cruisers, 20 broadside cruisers, 20 tartan cruisers, 78 acclamator cruisers and 4 interdicter cruisers used to prevent hyperspace jumps and to completely destroy the rebel fleet
This game is one of my all time favorites. Absolutely fantastic and the mods are insane.

There’s 2 mods: Thrawn’s Revenge, and Fall of the Republic, that are the best mods in this game. Since you’re a clone wars fan I’d suggest Fall of the republic first, because you get to experience all the Jedi in land battles and amazing republic and CIS ships.
If you *don't* think the mods are fully-fledged games on their own, you should play them again. The level of polish on mods like Republic at War and Thrawn's Revenge are just... I have no words.
Man your first 2 strategy games matched mine. My cousin got me into the Battle for Middle Earth 2 and Empire at war. So much fun

to be fair, wich trillogy you like the most depends on the generation you were born in, because all these movies were aimed at children. my mom loves the originals she saw as kid, i love the prequels wich released during my childhood, and maybe a future generation will realy like the sequels, you already can start seeing the memes crop up.
I like this game too, but don't be mistaken. It got a mediocre rating because it's kinda shallow, has horrible pathfinding and poor AI, even for its time. A lot of LucasArts games were just that, servicable enough to slap the Star Wars logo on. Yes, it's fun but it can get tedious or lacked complexity in the long run.

I bought it in 2006 and still play Republic at War regularily to this day, I just can't get enough haha
I really liked this game but the ground battles were really trash. If they made the ground battles like Age of Empires but Star Wars and uprgraded the graphics then this would be a buy for me. Or maybe the ground game like Company of Heroes 2.
yeah, it hat space and ground battles but lets be honest... the ground battles weren't fun.
I always let the ground battle auto-resolve since I didn't like them, but oh boy, did I love the space battles

@@AndysTake I haven't tried Fall of the Republic as far as I remember, but there are several clone wars mods that basically have the same concept but do it differently. Of the ones I have tried, Republic at War is the one I liked most. It has a really awesome galactic conquest map and it's so well made with so much attention to detail that it barely even feels like a mod. This might also be true about Fall of the Republic, I don't know.
Ive been played this for years...tbh rebellion force for space ship was tougher n strong than empire...need to nerf those calamari ship.. 1 mon calamari was able to beat 2 empire stardestyoer

The crappy star wars movies stole the plot line from the consortium expansion pack, that they had star destroyers with death star lasers on them. The super star destroyer you are trying to borrow as the criminal faction.
