How Did My 13 Card Vintage & Pre War SGC Submission Go? The Reveal Was Different Than I'm Used To

- My last several card grading submissions were to PSA. A couple of them resulted in some grades that were pretty disappointing. The most recent PSA submission seemed much more fair and what I was used to. But, after about a year since my last SGC submission, I decided to send in 13 cards and see how it went. There were definitely some mixed results in this submission, but let me know what you think of how it went.

Nice SGC reveal. Love the Koufax, Doby and those prewar cards were very solid as well. I will preach it till the cows come home: SGC=Consistency. PSA, roll the dice and pray 🙏 you get a decent grader, it’s as simple as that .
I can't argue with anything in your comment. Agree.
Loved seeing those returns. Also love the look of those vintage cards in the SGC tuxedos. So sharp looking. I have a bunch of 71 Topps I’m going to be sending to SGC soon. I know how hard the graders are on that set so I’m going in with low expectations and hopefully I’ll be pleasantly surprised.
I totally agree. Cards look so good in the tux slabs. The super old stuff just pops.
Nice. SGC is solid, no huge surprises.
Agreed. It was nice not being knocked over by any of the grades being too low.
Hi Graig. I thought you did well for the most part, like you said. I really love the look of vintage in SGC. Thant Doby is a beauty. Thanks for sharing
Totally agree that the older the cards, the better they look in SGC slabs.
Great SGC return Graig! Love the Koufax and Irvin. The Spahn and Doby are great cards, love the 51 Bowmans! I enjoyed seeing the Mecca cards, thats a very nice looking set! That was a quick turnaround! I submitted vintage to PSA over a month ago and it just got to Grading the other day. SGC can turn around an entire vintage submission in the time it takes PSA to respond to an email... Thanks for sharing!
So true about SGC and PSA. It's bonkers.
The Koufax is totally a keeper. That Spahn is delightful. I love the Doby, and I will offer you $2 for the pirate card. That’s a buck an ear. I think that’s fair.
LOL. I have a friend that used to dress up for Halloween with a dollar billed taped to each ear, and called himself a buccaneer.
I have 2-1910 Mecca billiards cards I got my eldest son for Xmas. He’ll love them!
Those cards a gorgeous in my opinion.
NIce returns Graig. The Warren Spahn and Larry Doby 51 Bowmans are very helpful in what I should be expecting when I submit my Monte Irvin. The Gaylord Perry was very surprising because I'm learning that the 62's are generally given a little bit more wiggle room compared to other years.
Thanks Sammy. Haven't caught up with you in a while. I hope things are going well. Looks like you're staying busy doing weekend shows. Thanks for watching!!
Hi Graig,
Thanks for the great video. I’m in the minority but I really like the way SGC presents the cards. Anyway I enjoyed your submission and I loved your 5.5 Koufax! And I love your prewar stuff.
I think that the grades were fair.
Have a great evening,
Peter
Thanks Peter. I agree. I like the Tuxedo look to SGC slabs. They really look great on prewar stuff.
Nice cards / grades. Love the Irvin and Doby cards (two players that don’t get enough hobby love). My last 4 submissions have been with SGC. Their turnaround time and customer support are amazing, and love the look of the cards in those slabs. Love your videos…keep ‘em coming.
Appreciate it a bunch. I have nothing but good things to say about SGC.
Those were nice grades. Seemed fair or even better than fair, in many examples. Thanks Graig
I agree.
Great return from SGC. The grades seem fair to me. I will say that SGC's holders (tuxedos) look better than the PSA holders. They make the cards pop.
Couldn't agree more.
Very fair grades.
You won’t likely see a swing state mentality in the comments given your audience! When it comes to vintage, no other company comes close to SGC.
Welcome home, Graig 😎🤣
LOL. Yeah. Agreed. I think the overwhelming amount of my audience prefers SGC. I'll continue to say that I want multiple quality companies so there is quality competition.
I thought the Monte should of gotten a higher grade but outside of that, very fair grades! Great reveal Graig!
Thanks Theo. The only thing I can think is the back centering was off enough that they hammered it.
Wow, some really nice stuff here! You simply cannot beat the SGC and vintage combo, they just go well together. SGC just gets it right, as you said, PSA is incredibly up and down.
Couldn't agree more!
I only do SGC now because vintage looks amazing in those slabs. (Much better than PSA slabs) I also have no interest in selling at this time, if ever. I only get my higher end cards graded so my family has something to go by in case something was to happen to me. And as a side note....R.I.P. Frank Howard
I do agree that SGC slabs look so good with Vintage cards.
Great cards, man that warren Spahn and Larry doby are beautiful!
Thanks. I totally agree. Both are going straight into my PC.
Hey Graig, just an idea. Next time you cover this topic. You should go through card prep and how you send and package your cards to send off for grading. Just an idea. Thanks !
Good idea.
I can certainly do that. Good idea. To be honest, I don't do a ton of "card prepping" for vintage cards, but I can certainly show my process. :-)
Nice cards Graig, and I think the grades were spot on with the possible exception of the Perry, but maybe there were some surface issues. That’s the only explanation I would have.
Totally agree. I looked the Perry over really closely and didn't see anything, but I must have missed something.
Grades looked pretty fair to me. I’m getting my 1888 Old Judge in tomorrows mail. Got a 5. Very pleased and I think it’s spot on. My first submission with them. Dropped it off at a show on the 15th and getting it on Nov 1. I will send more in the future
Wow. A 5 on any old judge is an amazing grade. Congrats.
I think the grades were pretty good.. a lot of half grades 3.5, 4.5, etc which I think honestly, is probably a fair way of the grader saying they didn't feel it's a definitive 4 or 5 arbitrary number for, the sake of just assigning it one way or another. Some pretty neat cards though. Love the '58 Koufax. Seems to present itself pretty well.
I agree. Half grades are important and PSA underuses them.
I collect the 1951 Topps and a majority of them have some type of surface wrinkle. In the past SGC was very lenient with wax stains for early Bowman cards, even ignoring them completely. Now they seem to knock them down to a 5 or 6. Pretty sure if you hold up the Gaylord Perry and Irvin up to a bright light, you will see some surface issues like surface wrinkles.
Probably true. I probably missed them. I looked them over, but didn't use heavy magnification.
I like the Gaylord perry myself. I met him and have a few things autographed. Just added your ebay store to my saved sellers list!
Gaylord Perry was at some card shows I was at as a kid, but didn't get his auto. I've heard he's a nice guy.
Nice cards and accurate grades in my opinion. Love the Mecca cards, in great condition. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Orlando!!
Great grades congrats!
Thank you!
That was a nice SGC return!
Thanks. I thought so too. Pretty happy with everything about the submission.
I find 1962 Topps always seem to be under graded so must be missing something. I am only using SGC for the moment sent 24 cards in a month ago as usually agree with the grades and wow service is fantastic. Too old to wait 3 months as I may never see the grades from PSA.😵
I agree. I feel like I see lots of 62 topps cards that look sweet but have low grades.
Nice cards and grades!
Thanks. I'm super happy with how it went.
I love SGC but I think they were harsh on the Gaylord Perry - that card looks amazing! Great color!
I agree. There's one tough on the bottom left corner. Other than that, the card looks incredible.
Convinced me to submit my next cards to SGC
I'm very satisfied with everything about the submission.
Overall some really solid grades and for the most part spot on. Think the Perry RC could have graded a tad higher but the rest are pretty solid.
Totally agree. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment.
I refuse to send my cards to PSA. The main reason is the up charge’s and I’d rather have my PC in a tux.
Tux looks good for vintage. Can't argue that at all.
Man, vintage cards just pop so nicely in those tuxes!
The only complaint I have with SGC is the inconsistency with horizontal cards. There is no way I could stand for two cards from the same set facing different directions. I realize those two are based on the orientation of the writing on the back, but I've had SGC turn two copies of the same card different directions and I immediately had to sell one because I couldn't stand it.
Yeah. Agree on how nice the vintage stuff looks in SGC.
SGC showing again it’s about grading correctly and customer service.
Yeah. I've gotta admit. Super impressed.
Graig I would love to buy that 51’ doby from you. I will shoot an email later after work.
Sorry I sold it before I got your email. Appreciate you reaching out, though.
Reveal starts at 5:00 👀
Correct.
SGC brutal on pre war vintatge, basically 1-5, not 1-10. NEVER do a PSA re-grade. Break it out of the PSA slab first and then send it in for grading to SGC. The two companies are in a pissing contest and you will always get a lower grade if you don't break it out. Still waiting on SGC to get rid of their Xerox labels.
The labels are very "basic"....but it does make it VERY easy to see the grade from a far distance.
