Not wanting to be too greedy, but if the output also included M and SD for all constructs and asterisks for significant correlations, then it would be journal ready.

On second thought, what is meant by the "mean" or "standard deviation" of a latent variable? What numbers are we using to calculate this mean?

hmmm... that might happen if you deleted a covariance and then added it back in again... Otherwise, I'm not sure.

Hi. Can you help please, I am getting a message that the file contains syntax errors. I have AMOS 24 and followed your steops t download and paste in the relevent folder. i can see it under the plugins menus byt the plugin name is preceeded with a question mark.
Make sure you are running AMOS as administrator. (right click amos graphics executable file and select run as administrator). Also make sure you have unblocked the file. Sometimes this option appears if you right click the plugin file, go to properties, and then check the box for 'unblock' if it is there.

However, I am receiving the message "You are missing at least one correlation arrow between latent factors. In order for this plugin to work, all latent factors must be correlated".
In my model, not all the latent variables are presumed to be correlated (some arrows have only one direction, and few latent variables are not related to few others).
Wael Nuweihed the validity master plug-in only works with a CFA measurement model. It does not work in a causal model.

Dr James , thanks for the awesome videos. After the master validity makes recommendations to remove variables (to improve CR) and I try the recommendation and remove a variable , it shows " Error running plugin . Objective reference not set to an instance of an object". Please help.
Make sure your model is still specified correctly. For example, if you delete an item, make sure to delete its error (residual) as well.

Sir if a construct do have AVE greater than 5 but CR around .68 is it sufficient??
This should be fine. Hair et al 2010 ("multivariate data analysis") recommend the reliability score to be greater than 0.600 at a minimum, but ideally over 0.700. They recommend that factors with 2 or 3 indicators might be expected to have lower reliability scores.

This is a minor criteria. Usually people rely on the fornell-larcker criterion instead (square root of AVE greater than correlations)
Thank you Professor Gaskin for this super useful tool. Just a question about correlations between error (of the same construct). When I apply this practice the HTML file doesn't show some internal correlations. The excel file do it. Are there any settings I have to apply to see these values in the HTML file? It is useful to see the significance of correlations.
I would recommend against correlating errors. Usually this implies the items are nearly completely redundant, and therefore one of those items should probably just be removed.

Sorry about that. I started making these plug-ins around version 21 I think. So, some of the plug-ins in the oldest holder might work.
James Gaskin, can you please specify exactly what type of correlations are in the matrix, and how I will find out significance levels.
Maybe also give a suggestion for a table heading.

The correlations are just bivariate. They are the ones produced in AMOS. Not sure if these are Pearson's or some other type. The table is the factor correlation matrix with validity measures.

@@khyatikapil83 They should be pretty similar. If they are not identical, don't worry about it. If they are very different, then it is probably due to a difference in the way the factors are comprised.

The table can have the heading "Fornell-Larcker Criterion for DIscriminant Validity" or "Factor Correlation Matrix". As for the difference, it can only be due to the latent nature of the variables in AMOS vs the composite nature of the variables used in the Pearson Correlation.

Not yet. Soon hopefully. IBM won't work with me to resolve the compatibility issue. So, I'm working with a research assistant to address this hopefully this month.

Great tool! I noticed that the AVE was lowered when correlating error terms. So should I report the validity before or after correlating error terms? Also, I tried to calculate the CR on my own but I just cannot arrive at the same results ...
The validity should be reported on the final model (after all modifications). The formula for CR is shown at the beginning of this video (in the excel file).

Thanks a lot for your useful tool. I have a question. I ran the Master Validity and found out 2 main factors overlapped severely with each other. Thus I would like to drop one factor and focusing on the other one and remaining factors. Could I just drop that factor and modify my thesis, using the modified model but with the same data from the beginning? Or I have to report that I need to drop one factor because of the validity problem and with some reasons following? Thanks so much in advance.
This is probably best asked to your adviser. If it were me, then I would determine what to do based on what role that factor plays. If it is a critical factor from the literature and everyone will ask "where is that factor?" then you cannot drop it. Instead you might find a way to discriminate the two factors that are overlapping. A good way to do this is with an EFA with just those two factors. If instead this is a factor no one will miss, then you can just drop it and not say anything about it. You can also try to make this factor and the other one the dimensions of a higher order factor. Lots of options.

Hello, Dr. James Gaskin. ASV was generated in your previous plugin, but there is no ASV reported in the plugin now. Why? Could you continue to show ASV? Thank you very much.
I took it out because I've never seen a journal article report ASV. It is easy to calculate though. ASV is the average squared correlation (so, square all correlations with that factor, and then average those squares).

Hi James, this tool is excellent but I want to ask something. Generally, when I calculate correlations by SPSS with computed variables the results are different than AMOS and naturally than master validity plugin. Is this normal? Or is this because of I use computed variables in SPSS? If yes which of these results should I report in papers? Thanks.
It is because you use computed values in SPSS. If you are going to use the computed variables in SPSS, then report the correlation matrix using those values. However, if you are going to use the latent model in AMOS, or a set of factor scores computed in AMOS, then use the matrix produced in AMOS.

Hello Sir, I am not able to use two plugins (Master Validity and Model Fit) however, rest are working fine. My AMOS version is AMOS 20. Do these two plugin not work on AMOS 20 or some other reason may be there? Please clarify.

I am using AMOS 22. No scores of AVE, CR or anything turn up. It just shows "NaN" in the AVE CR MSV and other columns. Why is it so? How to overcome this(
I've seen that happen sometimes. I think it is caused by having correlations missing, or by the model being edited a lot, and correlations being drawn and deleted and redrawn. In this case, it might be simpler to use the Excel stats tools.

Thanks for the wonderful plugin, but unfortunately it worked only once. when i tried to try with the same cfa model (which worked previously) it gave me message of 'cannot cmpute standardized regression weight. all variables need ti have at least one relationship'. This is weird since eacj latent variable in my CFA has relationship to the every other latent variables.
I'm not sure why it might be that way. I would recommend closing AMOS and reopening it. Sorry about that.
Sir I am not able to use the master validity plugin in AMOS 22. Getting error "error running plugin queue empty" .
I'm not sure about the queue empty error. Recently, browsers and operating systems have blocked the plugins. You might have to right click it, go to properties, check the box for 'unblock', and then put it in the correct plugins folder and reopen AMOS. Hope this helps!

You have to go to the View tab in Windows Explorer, then check the box for "Hidden Items". Then you should be able to see the path to the folder.

This plugin only works for measurement models. It won't work on a causal model. So, you can use it during the CFA, but not while testing the structural model.

Dear James thank you for your all awesome videos. I tried to install this into my computer. I m using Amos21. File is downloaded and pasted into plugins but it didn't appear in Amos Plugins option. Did I make any mistake while downloading ?
Make sure to unblock it in the properties window (right click file). And make sure to run AMOS as administrator (right click amos icon and select 'run as administrator'). If this still doesn't work, then I'm not sure. Sorry about that.

Hello, Sir, may I ask what to do if the AVE is less than the MSV? No mentioned items to delete. And, how about this, "Discriminant Validity: the square root of the AVE for Factor1 is less than its correlation with factor2." what to do with this? Hoping for a reply. Thank you.
These both imply a discriminant validity concern. I would recommend running an EFA with the items from just factor 1 and factor 2. See if you can separate them in the EFA (by eliminating the items with the strongest cross-loadings)

It is working wonderfully except for one of my models. It's giving me the error - "You are missing at least one correlation arrow between latent factors, In order for the Plugin to work, all latent factors must be correlated." I have checked many times but all my latent factors are correlated.
It gives this error only when I remove one item from a 4 item factor. Even after removing this item, minimum no of items in any of my factors is 3.
Hope this will help in improving this plugin.

Hmmm... Maybe you removed the item that had the path constraint on it? Make sure you have all latent factors covaried as well.
I checked again, Prof but that's not the case. One item for each latent factor has a path constraint. All latent factors covary. This is happening only when I have one 2nd order factor. If there is no 2nd order factor then removing this item doesn't show the error. Is there a way that I can send you the screenshot?

I've never included those, becasue latent variables are not specific values. However, I suppose you could take the average of the average from the factor measures.

Make sure all latent variables are covaried and that there are no causal arrows between latent variables, and that all latent variables have more than one indicator.

I don't think the plugins work for version 18. Sorry about that. You can use the old stats tools package excel file on the homepage of statwiki.

Hi, I have followed all of your instructions regarding how to activate plugins in amos 24, but I do not have the path that you have specified on my computer, such as the app data, I have put every effort for doing that but now the plugin is not active in the software. what should I do and what is the problem? please guide me and let me know if you have any further assistance.
At the top of the folder, go to the view tab, and then check the box for hidden items. This will let you see folders like app data.

Have no missing value. Still while calculating results, i am getting error related to missing value. Kindly help.
Check the bottom of your spss file. If there are rows that are empty, but the row number is not grayed out, then those are all considered to be missing values. To fix it, highlight the entire row (by clicking on the row number) and then right clicking any of the highlighted row numbers and selecting 'clear'.
i am using SPSS 24 but my Plugins folder in in Program FIles (x86) however, i paste the plugin there but its not showing in the AMOS can you please tell me how to solve this problem
The folder for version 24 is not in the x86 folder, but instead in this folder: C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\AmosDevelopment\Amos\{AmosVersion}\Plugins

Is it because I co-varied error terms?
I'm not sure why that would happen. Perhaps you only have one factor, or perhaps you have an observed variable that is not connected to a latent variable?

I faced the same issue. In spite of the error message, the html file is automatically saved in the relevant folder. You have to close the error message and open the html file from your folder. I hope this works for you. @Ahmed Faraz Khan

I'm not sure if version 20 allows for custom plugins. I've only tried from version 21+. Sorry about that.

Is anyone else getting the error: "Error running plugin. Queue empty"? The Master Validity plugin is excellent, and worked well for me using version 24, but when I upgraded to AMOS version 25, I started getting the error message. The other plugins released for version 24 still seem to work fine.

Thank you James. The problem seems to be limited to just the one particular .amw file. I've since created a new .amw file and the Master Validity plugin works beautifully. I'll email the relevant files to your gmail address in case you want to see why the one particular .amw file results in error.

Sir, I have Amos 20 and have downloaded Pattern Matrix builder, Model fit, and master validity from your resources I follwed the path ands copied them in the Amos plugins. they are asking for Administrator's Permission to paste. Please help
If you are using a company/university computer, then it might not let you install the plugins. I don't know of a way to bypass the administrator access on File Explorer.
@@Gaskination sir, I am using it in my laptop which is 32 bit operating system windows 7. My SPSS and Amos are cracked version of 20. I have downloaded the drive folder of Amos version 23 or lower one. Unblocked it and followed the local c- IBM -SPSS-AMOS-20-PLUGINS- PASTED THE PLUGINS. while pasting the PLUGINS it prompted to ask for permission from the administrator. I clicked continue. But when I am trying to go from SPSS Analyze -Amos - plugins I am not able to see the model fit, master validity. I can find the pattern matrix but it not running. Prompting Abort

Make sure you are complying with the caveats and assumptions
I use an AMOS version 22 and when I click on master validity plugin it shows an error message saying “Object reference not set to an instance of an object”. Kindly help.
Make sure all of your latent variables are covaried. Make sure all latent variables have at least two items. Make sure all latent variable names have no spaces or hard returns.

It is like subtracting the predicted covariance matrix (representing the proposed model) from the obsereved covariance matrix (natural to the data). The bigger the difference, the larger the chi-square. Differences come from unestimated parameters (relationships).

Check to make sure you aren't violating any basic assumptions of a CFA. For example, you should have all latent factors covaried, all factors should have one constrained indicator path (constrained to 1), all factors should have at least two indicators, there should be no causal paths between latent factors, etc.

We finally made a breakthrough yesterday in solving the incompatibility problem. We're hoping to have it resolved and tested for several of the plugins by the end of next week.
excuse me doc. i moved the file into the plugin folder, but it doesnt show up in my amos. im using amos 21. any advice?
For AMOS 21, make sure to put the MasterValidity23 file in the following location: C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\SPSS\Amos\23\Plugins (in this case, 23 is the AMOS version number). Also make sure to unblock the file (right click, properties, unblock) if it is blocked. Do this before putting it in the plugins folder.

No need to rename it. I'm not sure why it isn't working for you. Very sorry about that. I don't have version 21 anymore to test it. You can just continue to use the Excel version I suppose.
I was having similar problems with v. 21 but fixed it.
First, make sure you are using MasterValidity23.dll file. Then, place it in the ...Amos > 21 > Plugins directory. Next, right click on the dll file -> Properties and make sure the Unblock item IS checked. Following these steps worked for me.

It is just another form of reliability that usually produces higher values than the CR.

Not yet. The plugin here was intended for that, but apparently has a bug. My research assistant and I will work on producing a better one this fall.

Yes. I have plugins for version 23 and version 24. You can find them on the statwiki homepage. Look on the left for plugins and estimands.

Yes, I'm not sure it would work in 21. I was unable to test it in 21.
what is the MaxR(H)?
It is a more robust measure of reliability that no one uses... So, while it is useful, it is useless because no one knows what it is. I would not worry about reporting it.
Can i use this function in Amos 21???
I'm not sure. I don't have version 21 to test it on. You can try. If it doesn't work, then it is probably due to an updating issue. The earliest I tested this one on was version 23.

didn't work in version 23 too, just tried it
hmmm... it should work in version 23. Make sure you are using the version 23 plugin (there is also a version 24 plugin that is different), and make sure you are putting the plugin in the right location for version 23 (this is a different place than for version 24). Also make sure you are using a latent model with no causal relationships between latent variables. It should just be a CFA as shown in the video above.
I have already added the plugin to the correct path, c: program files (x86) IBM SPSS AMOS 23 Plugin and can’t find it in the plugins tab in Amos, just the regular plugins like draw covariances, growth curve model, name parameter, .... but can’t see the plugin I added.
I restarted Amos and even restarted my pc and still can’t find any of ur plugins I added
Make sure to check the box to unblock the plugin. This is found in the properties (right click file, go to properties, check general tab, see at bottom for 'unblock').
This can also happen if you have multiple versions of amos installed, and you have put the plugins in the correct folder for one version, but then run the other version.

How to fix the error
hmmm... Not sure about that one. Make sure your model has at least two latent factors, that the variable names are valid (don't have spaces or returns or mathematical symbols), and that your model runs without the plugin (actually produces output). If all these are addressed and it still doesn't work, feel free to google my email address (just google my name and you'll find me) and email me your model and dataset and I'll troubleshoot it.
