I think we need to stop seeking aproval or status from others that gives them control instead we should be confident and know we are worthy
Easier said than done
Effectively materialism is the lowest way to achieve status and fulfilment.
You may achieve status through materialism, but never fulfillment. It's a never ending hunger, if you scratch that itch with things you'll always want more, and more, and more
To seek approval is give others control over you. That sentence alone finishes it off imo...and its totaly true

I would like to know your personal opinions about what the right things to chase are?!
Materialism isn't all bad. Companies out there are making some seriously quality goods which I love. An outsider would call me materialistic. I'm just doing it for me though. Not for anyone else.
It's nice to have nice things if they make you feel good. Be it an expensive robe, bed sheets, headphones, a 4k TV, top of the range car. I can afford all that stuff and I'm so grateful for all of it.
I don't "need" most of it. But I love having it. I certainly don't live outside of my means just to keep up my status.

There is a distinction between buying things for their usefulness rather than their status.
I recall the story of sam walton, founder of wal mart, who drove an old red pickup, thus setting the tone for executives at walmart. when he died, all the senior executives at walmart then went out and bought big houses, and etc.
I didn't know what happened after his death but his autobiography, Made in America (which is superb), talks about his modest way of life.
"Danger in Wealth.
Only a man of intellect should hold property: otherwise property is dangerous to the community. For the owner, not knowing how to make use of the leisure which his possessions might secure to him, will continue to strive after more property. I pushed "like"... But have you considered the possibility that sometimes the culture can be below the intellect of the poor and uncultured? Take for one instance that comes to mind. The Cherokees took the ideas of the white men that made sense to them and left off the others. Some became successful farmers and merchants Yet the social leaders of the day called them uncivilized because they grew corn instead of wheat. This seems like good intelect, and far above that of the social leaders of the day

I think it really depends on each individual pursuits and how much they can afford. If a person is born from a billionaire family, one can spend the way he wants. However, if one is having an average salary and buy the luxury with huge debt is stupid and definitely lost to the status game. I inherit multi millions dollars but I am grateful that I do not have to work in an office environment and that is all I want. When you are working in an office, it is hard not to be materialistic, because one have to deal with clients and bosses and they want you to dress nice. Now I am only working on part time tutoring and pursuit my passion as a painter. I do not have to worry about retirement and no need to worry about clients. I do not like luxurious goods. I think it is a burden rather than added value. I feel much more fulfilled than having to dress in a designer brands suit for client meetings. I just dress in GAP polo shirt and jeans everyday.
I really liked the main moral of the story, that we haven't really changed that much and that we should be focusing on things that truly have value instead of chasing material goods

What about our Western Civ.
decision to set up the pursuit of money and things as opposed to the pre world war order. After WWII the new capital system was put in place. Status is an American thing, where as supporting the Royal houses was a motivation that was displaced. So down the road we are faced with this practice of over consumption. This is historic bounded and not just human nature at play. Now it seems taking pictures of a thing is kind of like having it. With the internet addiction, experiences are what drive us. Ask any 15 year old.
I came here from a RUclips short which told a different version of the story. Diderot was an impoverished writer who produced a great library of encyclopaedia works. He couldn't even afford to pay for his own daughter's wedding. "His fortunes improved significantly in 1766, Empress Catherine the Great, who heard of his financial troubles, paid him 50,000 francs to serve as her librarian." - Encyclopaedia Britannica.

2. throw out your TV.
3. sell your house.
4. live in your car or RV.
5. sell your belongings and travel the world.
6. if you end up in jail. enjoy it. it may be more freedom than you expected.
i am almost 50 years old and life is short. i have nothing to really show for all of my labor. but it doesn't matter to me. all i see are people who spend their lives paying mortgages and wondering if they will be able to retire. is this really a way to live?
