Aisling, your tree!!, did you try to replant it?, I’m sure with a bit of TLC it will bloom again. Gook luck with the Reno’s, I’m sure it will start to look tons better soon x🤞
So good to see your cottage not badly damaged you can sort out your sheds in time and rebuild your fence lovely to see your dad down helping you also you and family are safe keep positive and take care.
Thanks for the update. Don't despair, " 🎶Everything's gonna be alright ...🎶". Request an extention, from the council, for your grant. Yesterday, I brought Jess home from the vets, she's been on a drip for four days .... severe bout of gastroenteritis 😢. Bill was £800 ..... I'll have to go 'on the street' to earn some money ...... most probably outside the blind school ! 🙈 xxxxxx
Sad to see so much damage, Aisling. It's terrible that in modern society people are left without the things they need for everyday living. With storms becoming more frequent, governments (not just yours) really need to address improvements to infrastructure so that people are not left struggling without utilities for so long. On a brighter note, I think that maybe your pretty little tree might recover. Part of it looked like it was still in the ground and hopefully it will come back. Fingers crossed. Lots of love ❤
I haven’t been a fan of our current government anyway, so I am very unimpressed that they are on holiday while there’s a national emergency, but that’s a topic for a different day! It has taught me that I need to be prepared for the next and more self Reliant! I am really hoping that the lilac tree comes back better! The healthier part of the tree does still seem to be standing and planted so fingers crossed ❤️
So glad you're okay. It's good news the cottage didn't suffer damage from the storm. I know the barn suffered but that can be a project for the future. Take care and stay safe.😊
I’m am just glad there were no injuries and no damage to the cottage, very fortunate! The sheds will get fixed up at some point so I am not too worried ❤️ take care
Thank you so much! Definitely a bit of clean up to get done, it’s not what we needed after an already slow start to the year but we’ll keep pushing forward and hope for the best! ❤️
Thank you, I feel like even tho it's annoying the damage that was caused is so much less worse than if there had of been problems at the house itself! Hope you're keeping well ♥️
@ Thanks Aisling,I have a bit of a health journey ahead but trying to stay positive. Looking forward to seeing your works start and follow the renovations.Hopefully one day myself and my partner will be living in Ireland..that’s the dream 😉👍
@ we will keep your health in our thoughts and manifest a smooth journey to good health again ❤️ and I’ll keep my fingers and toes crossed you both end up over here ❤️❤️
It's sad about the trees . You needed a new fence and the damage wasn't bad at that. The storm saved you a lot of work on the stables. Look at it that way. Your house held up. What a house. Your very lucky. Just get rid of all the trash and save what you can.❤❤❤❤
I just love Ireland 🇮🇪 but what devastation the storm caused for you and many others .. You will get back on track Aisling it’s just going to take more patience and positivity, all the work you are doing 10 steps forward then 5 back seems disheartening for you . I know you will get there in the end, sending hugs on this journey one day you will look back with a huge smile .. nice to see your Dad around to give you support 💕💕💕😘🇬🇧🇨🇦💕💕
It really was an awful storm, hopefully we won't see any as bad for a long time again and hopefully it's the last for this year at least! It is disappointing that there's been so many roadblocks lately but we push on ♥️♥️
@ yes we must push on we had a few Blizzards this week it’s Minus - 32 with Windchill today you may have experienced it if you lived in Canada so push forward is a goal love to You and baby Morri 💕💕
Aisling, the shed roofing needed to be replaced anyway. Mother nature just helped you with the demolition! There's always a silver lining. Will the power outage delay the builders? You've got a lot to be thankful for actually 😊😊
It really did help me not have to take them down myself lol! Always a silver lining! Builders were provisionally going to start this coming week, but they have lots of emergency jobs to pick up id say, so I think we’ll be pushed back a bit. Not having power also doesn’t help, but it’s ok there’s lots of time still for the grant and the weather is warming up so not as worried about getting the heat in now
It's so funny. I look at the demage and think O that's easy to repair. Nothing mayor(?). Metal plates are re-usable. But that is after 30 years of experience😂 and being a very possitive person. I can imagine it is overwhelming for you. But keep on going. Keep focused on your end goal. In a few years time when you look back at these videos you laugh and you are proud of what you have achieved. Keep on going girl.
The damage definitely isn't too bad, just has come at a very bad time when all resources are going towards the house but hopefully by the summer there will be time (and money) to get the roofs fixed up ♥️ thanks so much for the best wishes ♥️
Hi Aisling, so glad the damage was not to the main house. We are still without Internet at our house in Westport. I haven't been up there so haven't seen if any damage. On the bright side, your shed roofs would probably have had to have been replaced so the dismantling of those was done courtesy of Eowyn. You have not lost your favourite lilac tree, the dead or dying part has just broken off as it was so weak. Lilacs are super at regenerating themselves so in no time you will have a lovely tree again. Don't mow or strim too close to it as the new shoots will be sent out from the old roots under the soil. Also, apparently due to the storm you can apply for an extension to your grant. I saw that earlier on The Irish Homestead YT channel. Anyway, thanks for the update, spring is coming, all will be well, x J
Morri and I will keep our fingers and our paws crossed that your place in Westport is ok. Really I’ve never seen anything like that storm, it was awful! Even up in Dublin the winds were so scary. Power is also still out at the cottage, I was hoping it would come back yesterday so I could go to the house but still out at the moment but again so lucky I’m up in Dublin! That is a very positive spin the roofs absolutely did need to come down, the wood was rotten and the tin very rusted in parts so Eowyn has saved me a little bit of work! That is great to know about the lilac because that was the most upsetting loss I love that little tree but hopefully now it’ll grow back stronger and healthier! Stay safe and well and fingers crossed all ok at your Westport house ❤️
Thànk god your house wasn't damaged and your safe I wonder what damage your neighbours property sustained I pray they are OK never mind spring is on its way things take on a different prospective with God's help I feel for you but the main thing is your OK x̌x
We actually were talking to the neighbours when we were down and thankfully they were ok, they did lose a shed as well but other than that everything held up. Still no power or water for them though, day 9 now, so they can't be easy especially when they have animals etc. we were very lucky ♥️
I am glad your house is okay. The sheds were in bad shape before the storm. You can get a poly tunnel to store items if needed. They hold up well in storms and wind. The sheds can wait. Focus on the house. Your favorite tree looks like it still has growth, at least from the shot I saw. It may come back healthier than ever if so. I am sorry for the mess and losses to your land. I am saddened for Ireland and anyone who suffered losses. Stay safe.❤
I am really hoping the tree will come back better than before, some of it was in dodgy shape and needed pruning and cleaning up so hopefully the healthy and strong part grows better than before! The sheds were in the same boat, so they’ll get fixed up when needed hopefully in the summer ❤️
Could not agree more to this post..some great observations and suggestions. Unfortunately, these awful storms are terrible no matter where one lives. Prayers to all that suffer losses and setbacks.
Your guardian Angel saved the day, I reckon those roof timbers would have been hard to remove by yourself, so you have a head start for the work ahead. The tree by the gates will make a decent amount of firewood and can easily be replaced and the fence is an easy fix. Thank goodness, it could have been so much worse. Hugs for the stress and worry.
Aisling, it's sad to hear the sense of loss in your voice, but you will find the positives very quickly. Your newly repointed, lovely job might I add, is still standing, so must be pretty sound. and the next page is waiting to be turned, all the best. Also, I know it's a thing in the US, not sure about here, have you looked into power packs? No idea what they might be called here, but have seen them in action, on some US channels.
Onward and upward! Spring is coming! You're doing great and thank goodness the house is intact!❤ I'm sorry about the trees 🌳 I just noticed the horses on the wall! How cool!
Aisling - I think the pointing looks great! I really think you should reach out to any company’s that manufacture generators to see if any of them can sponsor one of your videos? Good luck 🤞
Thank you so much! I’m really happy With how the pointing has turned out! I always feel a bit of anxiety about reaching out to a company it feels a bit cheeky!! Thanks so much!
@ It’s not cheeky - the company would get free advertising and your viewers would see the generator in use! If you could get hold of one fairly soon it will mean the builder would have power no matter what! My advice would be bite the bullet and send an email to their marketing dept and the CEO’s office. Give them details of your RUclips account and if they decide to sponsor you they will also direct customers to your site = more subscribers. As my dad always said “if you don’t ask you don’t get” - what’s the worst thing that could happen - they say NO? Go for it!
Hi Aisling well you really were lucky with the cottage it is amazing the things that get destroyed and the tiny little things that stay, Bee hive ??? and the poor tree and the lilac one but I see a bit still standing so it might get saved also you could try replanting the other bit as it still has roots. The wall does look good and I think once you have the full wall done it will look way diff you will see it the way you want it to look then. So till next time take care and Goodbye January and its 234 days lol feels like it. xxxxx Dede
Hi Dede! How are you getting on? I really do feel lucky that the house is still standing when I see how bad the damage was for others and for my poor sheds! There is some of the lilac still standing so fingers crossed it’ll grow back stronger and better! I’m excited to get back to pointing now that I know it turns out ok! Morri and I sending you love and hugs ❤️ hopefully power being restored to you town, we’re still without 😣
I'm so very sorry that the sheds have come off worse but the structure is still intact and some of the roof timbers looked like they needed replacing anyway, shouldn't be too costly to put the sheeting back on, hopefully, gutted for the lilac tree though, they tend to be a bit brittle, it may grow back. Main thing is your cottage has proved to be sturdy. Just a couple of solar panels will be a lifeline for the near future. I'm sorry it's more work for you😢 stay positive, all can be fixed.❤
Thank you so much ❤️ the shed roofs had damage after storm Darragh so I think the would have had to come down anyway, just bad timing with the house Reno due to start. I was mostly upset about the lilac tree that hurt the most! Hopeful that just the dead part is what we lost and the few branches remaining will grow strong ❤️ just thankful my poor little house has stood for another test! We got lucky that the wind hit the front of the house where the roof is strong, rather than the back which is the weak spot!
I’m glad for you that you house was spared. Nan was looking out for you. The shed roofs are repairable; the walls look good and solid. Same for the fence. The lilac will bounce back, just keep the strimmer a way from it till new shoot are substantial. Lilacs are notoriously hard to kill because they keep sending up new shoots. Praying for everyone for quick repairs and power.
Glad y’all are safe, and that the damage wasn’t worse. As solar is a down the line project, perhaps think about a Jackery battery for the meantime. I know a lot of van lifers use them. At least you could power a few things in case of outage. Slan. (I’m trying to learn Irish)
I will definitely look into a jackery battery I haven’t heard of that! It’s unfortunate the damage but happy to not have had it worse! Slan! I think it’s great to learn Irish, it’s on my list of things to do this year!
Oh my goodness! Someone really was watching over the cottage! Funny how the roof stayed in your yard! At least it wasn't sent to a neighboring village! It almost looks like the roof was just set on top of the blocks. And it's so weird how it randomly took out the fence, the bush, and a tree as well! I'll bet the beekeeper will be happy his beehive didn't blow away! Lol. So very glad the damage wasn't worse. Fingers crossed for the power to be restored to the whole country quickly!
Isn’t it mad the things that got destroyed and the things that survived! The door blew in and the roof off, but the beehive just chilling looking like there was no storm at all! I think if anything this is a huge learning curve, it’s making me thinking about the future and what I need to do to prep for next storm season. Onwards and upwards, hopefully power back over the next few days and then get the builders in! ❤️
Éowyn blew down the new fence we had installed just last month. When we examined the damage, it turned out that our fence posts weren't cemented into the ground as we paid for, but just hammered into the mud, and would have come down soon enough with or without a major storm. And this was from a highly-reviewed builder! He's coming back this week to do remediation, and I can't wait to hear his explanation for 'forgetting' to anchor the fence. He has a silver tongue and has clearly had a lot of practice at talking his way out of anything. Ah well, could be worse. Lot of people lost a lot more than us....
That is shocking that they didn't cement it in.... In a small way it was a blessing the fence blew out so you knew and could get that fixed before too long had passed and possibly worse storms came calling. Shocking the builder would pull a fast one like that (presuming it was intentional). Like you said, others have lost a lot more so I do also feel lucky and grateful for what happened!
@@morrigans_cottage Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was intentional as we'd discussed the details before he started, and they certainly didn't involve hammering the fenceposts into the mud. I think he was just trying to rush through lots of jobs in the run-up to Christmas, and he assumed that the fence would stand up long enough for him to have a bit of plausible deniability when it did eventually fail. Most of the work he did for us was up on the roof, and all of that came through the storm absolutely solid and watertight, so I suspect he's actually a roofer rather than a general builder, and that would be where where all his glowing prior recommendations come from. I guess if one thing had to fail, it's just as well it was the fence and not the roof, chimney or gutters - I can fix a fence easy enough, but I wouldn't be going up on the roof!
@ 100% it is better your roof held up well v the fence, as a dodgy roof could have been disastrous whereas a fence while annoying isn’t keeping your home watertight! Hopefully he gets your sorted with no hassle going forward 😅
As others have said, the construction of the roofs that have decided to go on their own little adventure was clearly poorly affixed for the typical Irish gusts of winds. The positive is that the concrete block walls themselves have taken the blast well and appear solid. I am certain when DG are on site they will show you the correct way to construct the roof. If there had been a solid timber plate above the blocks, proper timber beams held down by metal fixings into the block and then correctly sealed up corrugated sheeting I am fairly certain the roof would be standing. You may also, dependent on what you want the buildings to be used for is to install a single piece GRP roof with metal retaining edge placements to further enhance these outhouse buildings surviving the winds. Lots of options, but at least present the buildings are empty, and once main house is completed it gives you time to work out what your plans are and can go on from there knowing that out of all your expenses this damage is at the lower end of scale.
Hi! You’re so right, like most other things at the property, the roof of the sheds were not constructed properly, so really the storm did me a favour taking them out! The good news is the block structure is standing like you said, so hopefully just the roofs to do up and improve! Thankful the house held and didn’t blow away completely 😂❤️
@ It’s not always easy, but I try and count my blessings when things are bad. It must have been very scary too. There will be brighter days ahead I am sure. When everything is done, you will be able to pat yourself on the back and say ‘well done’. You will deserve it.
@ you are so right! There is a lot of positives to take out of what happened and what didn’t happen. Things are moving in the right direction at least!
That was fortunate the big fir tree fell into the field and didn't smash your gate and block the road as happened to a friend of mine's... Also that the roof of the shed didn't fly over the wall... Those things mstter when having to deal with such damage...
So so lucky it blew inwards rather than out into the road, that would have been much worse as further up the road there’s trees down blocking the roadway to get in/out of our little area! The roof actually blew into the neighbours farmyard behind us but they kindly brought it back 😂😂😂
Good morning! Take this opportunity to apply for a 3 month extension. Do it today. Don't think about it, wonder, consider. Mail and ask today. Your entire production system just took a hit. You will not be able to get items the laborers need, and if you do, it'll be more expensive. Prioritize what has to be done first to get your money back. Sadly, that may mean you delay the bathroom, for instance. You have to make hard choices. Get it sound and functioning to get the grant. Then, you can do the rest. Building in ideal conditions always takes 2X longer than you think and 1/3 in costs. Prioritize now, so that you are clear when XYZ occurs you can say, move on, we'll get to do that later. Make that wants and needs list. Needs has to attach to the grant. We know who that angel was. You have earth angels and angels in heaven. May grace be yours.
Thank you so much those are all great tips ♥️ I'm lucky enough that I still have lots of time left on the grant but I will more than likely touch base about an extension! Builder wise I think we are still on track, it is just likely to be delayed a week or two so very lucky on that front too! Take care ♥️
Can you afford to buy a generator? It's actually probably a false economy not to buy one. Also it's a good idea to have a gas cooker or at least a gas hob, so that you can cook or at least boil water.
A generator will be next year if I don't have solar by then, id rather go down the solar route if possible just because we have such strict rules and high prices/carbon taxes on diesel/petrol but definitely an option I'll look into when it comes to it! I'm also going to get a portable gas stove for cases of emergency too!
Did you miss the 2 huge trees down, the lilac tree gone, the doors and roofs blown clear off, and the fence destroyed? Not to mention the lack of power for 9 days now. Hope that helps
Very thankful that we came out of all of this in one piece (for the most part!)❤
Aisling, your tree!!, did you try to replant it?, I’m sure with a bit of TLC it will bloom again. Gook luck with the Reno’s, I’m sure it will start to look tons better soon x🤞

If you can, cover the shed where you put the furniture with a tarp to protect them from the rain.
Well that is a relief to hear that lilacs are hard to kill! I was so upset to see that it had been blown down!
Oh yes that’s a really good idea! The shed is pretty water tight but definitely a tarp would help! I will get one
At least the things that blew off are in your area. You can reuse them. Less expensive for you.
Yes 100% that is a small blessing!!
Look in to Eco Flo portable charger and you get solar panels as sometimes they send them free to youtubers to try out .😊
I wonder if they might send one to me 😂 I have been looking at them they’ve been mentioned a few times now in my comment section!!
So sorry about the damage outside 🙁
It is disappointing but so thankful it wasn’t worse!
Was that Rathcroghan you passed driving...?
It sure was! Good spot!!
Does this happening cause you to think of a wood stove in a fireplace.?
Absolutely, the plan is to get a solid fuel stove in the living room
😅just where is the màjor damage?
Did you miss the 2 huge trees down, the lilac tree gone, the doors and roofs blown clear off, and the fence destroyed? Not to mention the lack of power for 9 days now. Hope that helps
A battery charged by solar would help
Yes 100% that is hopefully the plan!
