    Thing about a motorcycle is you have to deal with clutch and gear changes every time you slow or stop. When you're slicing and dicing through traffic, you don't need that extra work. And should you go down on a motorcycle, a lot of hot parts will fall on you. (Don't ask me how I know this) Not a problem with a scooter. For this kind of city cut and thrust, a 150cc and up scooter is the right choice.

    I'm with you on that. I live in Central California and I ride a 150ie Vespa LX. I commute between two cities where the top speed on the roads is 60 mph. My Vespa does great. Great MPG, easy to park and YES, storage is great.
    Thanks for the video. Much love from Central California.

      Meat and Motorcycles Never having made a video before, I'm playing a lot with Final Cut and especially Apple Motion. I'm interested in animated graphics, and it's amazing what Motion will do.
      I'm pretty comfortable with the sound side, except that setting a loudness level for RUclips is new to me. It's now clear to me why most RUclipsrs don't know how to control their audio level on upload, and I think that I've figured it out.
      Mostly, this is an experiment connected to videos that will be done on a different channel for a new restaurant. Fun though, and educational.

    • @MeatandMotorcycles
      @MeatandMotorcycles  7 лет назад

      Rory on a Bike final cut is a great platform. I use Adobe premiere which is a little more complicated but I'm used to it now so why change. Haven't played much with Apple motion.
      All of my sound work I do in editing and upload it to RUclips w/out changing anything in RUclips.
      Play around with everything and see what works best for you . There are so many how to videos available that can help figure out the settings.

    • @roryonabike5863

      Meat and Motorcycles I'll be very Interested in your comments on my video. Apparently, RUclipsr protocol is that all criticism must be "constructive". Being over 15, I'm more interested in honest, and I'm particularly interested in knowing what doesn't work.
      The video should be up by this weekend. Looking forward to comments from you and others :)

    Scooter does not necessarily mean something with small wheels like the Vespa. I have a large wheeled Sym 125 which is more stable than the smaller wheeled variants, ideal for commuting or popping into town. I also have a Moto Guzzi California 1400 that I use for touring and days out. Horses for courses, but whatever you ride adequate protection is the key and treat all other road users like idiots.

    So while living is rural Sicily, I rode a 150 cc Piaggio Liberty scooter (it was for months my sole transport, including during the winter rainy season) with 16" front/14" rear wheels (yes, believe it or not, not every scooter has tiny wheels) that got me 0.8km/0.5mi to my home up and down a steep grade dirt road every day, as well as generally in a country that has seriously steep roads everywhere, and across farmers' dirt field paths, even when rain-soaked.
    Never got anything but admiring looks for the ATGATT Shoei full face helmet, Vendramini boots, Vanson jacket, etc. Which is good, because there's no difference, when it comes to personal damage/hurt, between an accident on a scooter and a motorcycle.
    The noticeable phenomenon in Sicily is that young people into dirt bikes are wearing full gear, whereas the average high school kid riding a scooter or motorbike is not even wearing a helmet.

      Rory on a Bike my first bike was an Aprilia Scarabeo 50cc two stroke so it was as fast as the 125's of today. I loved it and can only imagine had I been a teenager growing up in Italy. Went wen I was 19 and fell in love with the scooter.
      My favorite part about going back to Italy is that the scooters don't look so small!

      Helmet in Italy is mandatory. That prescription seems followed by ITalians, but not in the south of Italy. Especially in Neaples where they love to re-invent road laws.

      @MeatandMotorcycles  7 лет назад +1

      Erry Rollins the first time I went to italy in 97 they hadn't implemented the helmet law yet. And in Naples when they did there was a case of a kid getting shot because he tried to run through a helmet check point because he didn't have his helmet on. They did not take kindly to that

  • @ENJ4321

    Well I have a Suzuki Burgman 650, and a Honda Shadow 750. Usually I trade off which bike to use to go to work, but most of the time the scooter is the better option. The wheel base on maxi scooters isn't as small mid size (150, 250, 300) and lower...plus they can go highway speeds like crazy.

  • @lb150t
    @lb150t 5 лет назад

    Great video, I just got rid of my big BMW and got the GTS300, but only ride it up and down the beach, the Beemer is a little over engineered for that. Absolutely love the Vespa, we go two up for breakfast and lunch rides on the weekends, you can't beat it, it's fast enough (80 mph?) if someone gets on your ass you can goose it and so easy to park, plenty of luggage space with the big case on the back. BUTT...I am jonesin' for something like the new Triumph Scrambler for longer rides, trying to resist the temptation. Would keep the Vespa, though, it's just too cool.

      James Bae thanks for the sub! The bike does get warm around the legs if you get stuck in good Summer traffic but nothing you can't handle. Same as many other air cooled bikes. I've never over heated but you do have to check your oil every so often . The Guzzi holds a small amount of oil compared to other bikes. Only about 2.5 quarts.

    I’m having this EXACT same logic right now. I bought a Vespa GTS 300 which is gorgeous and I live in a major city, but really look forward more to traveling outside of the city. Seán McCluskey I’ve had 50 150 and 300. Get a 150. Don’t think of the top speed of a 50 being enough. Sometimes you need a little extra to get out of a jam. Hands down 150 cc minimum. You’re going to luv it. And if you haven’t already, the motorcycle safety course is a MUST!

    The thing is people think Scooter Slow ... Motor cycle Fast .
    That is simply Not True anymore .
    Scooters range from 49cc to 650cc's ! now .
    There is a Scooter that will tour tbe Country no sweat .
    But if all your doing is commuting then 250 or 300cc or even down to 150cc will get you around just fine .
    I commuted for 15 years all summer on a pair of 200cc Vespas one with a sidecar .
    I drove 60 miles each way without any issues what so ever.
    Now I run both the Scooters and a 650 KLR because I did some touring and off road fun.
    The Scooters were far less maintenance . Even with all the milage I was doing .
    I have owned the 79 scooter since 2002 one set of brake shoes frt and rear .
    The Sidecar Scooter running it since 2006 with will over 600 passengers and haven't had to replace the brakes on it even.
    Both scooters are in the 30 40,ooo kms now .
    A few cables over the years but easy work.
    A carb kit every 5 years if that.
    Even modern Scooters they just work .
    No fuss just ride .
    I think with all the choices in Scooters now there's no reason to think SLOW anymore .
    Just think reliable daily riding .
    Of course if your in a Big City an Alarm and good security should be considered Bike or Scooter.
    GPS tracking devices even.
    They are just so practical it's right on so many levels.
    Scooters are not the nerd machine of 50 years ago . They are smart people movers .
    Fuel milage .. Hardly anything can touch a Scooter any size for milage .

    In a major congested city like New York, it's hard to understand why anyone would ride anything but a scooter. The only reason that I own a motorbike is that I mostly don't ride in the city, and I've added storage to the bike for when I do. Hey, I have to put my impulsive Manhattan wine buy somewhere.
    All of this is going to be irrelevant in five years, when we all start riding electric bikes. If Zero made a bike today that wasn't fundamentally a dirt bike, I'd probably own it.

      Meat and Motorcycles Zero is about instant torque, and so they have emphasised dirt bikes. Like you, I don't find the aesthetics attractive. But this will change, my bet is within two or three years.
      Electric is happening. Interesting question about what Piaggio is going to do about it. They are clearly focused on it, witness their electric bicycles. The bikes are a beginning, not an end.

    • @MeatandMotorcycles
      @MeatandMotorcycles  5 лет назад +1

      Abbey Zucker it’s the best way to get around the city! I’ve had two vespas in NYC and loved them both.
      My advice is :
      If you don’t have a motorcycle license then you’ll need one. Take the MSF safety class which is part classroom/ part learning on a real motorcycle. They make it very easy and the class has saved my life a couple of times. Plus, once you pass the class then just take the certificate to the DMV and get your license . All you have to do at the dmv is the written. No driving test.
      Next would be to get good gear. Some of the fashion helmets are nice but aren’t safe. Good helmet and gloves are my minimum.
      New or used is up to you. Used from a dealer is better as at least they look it over before selling it. New vespas have a pretty good warranty if something should go wrong on the first couple of years.

    • @MeatandMotorcycles
      @MeatandMotorcycles  5 лет назад +1

      Abbey Zucker parking - stay away from midtown. Residential is easy. Just don’t park behind vans. They’ll knock you over every time. You can get a plate puller to take your plate off in places where you shouldn’t be parked and it works most of the time , but eventually they will tow you. Get a good cover for the winter months and be prepared to find it knocked over. Just get good insurance and eventually let them pay to fix it up before your sell it for something bigger. My vespas would get knocked over about once every couple of months.

      Hi John. I was commuting from the Putnam Valley area to the city with my Piaggio MP3 500 until I killed my bike. Forgot to put the oil plug back...don't ask. I upgraded to a Motorcycle and it was a great upgrade. The only issue I had with the MP3 500 is the seat was very uncomfortable! If you are comfortable on the GTS you will be fine. Not sure what you are considering, speed, economy, comfort etc. For me it was 500/month long term Train or 200/month short term +maint...I took short term. My motorcycle has heated grips and I have all the gear for deep winter incursions. I had a woman pass me on one of those GTS's and she had on a blouse and jeans, total bad a**ery….also if you have to mill around in the city, no shifting is the way to go.

      at that size, a scooter is basically just an automatic motorcycle with a different shape. While I believe manual cars make for a more anticipative driver, I can see it going the other way with bikes. More attention to the road situations rather than operating the machine. Ultimately depends on the rider though I guess..

      Was also thinking about this … motorcycle looks better and is cheaper per cc. But scooter is also usable for daily use because of transport space. Better seat for Sozia. More technical futures, easy to fix (no chain, good accessable drive unit), scooter also has better weather protection and Komfort. No manual gear means more relaxed fun on driveing but also less sport driveing.

The western society is just brainwashed. But in eastern countries like India and Asia its normal. I wear the full gear all the time on my scooter I feel safer and thats what matters not society's opinion. Good insight there love it.

      I've always gone ATGATT ever since my first 50cc when I was 16. The thing that I noticed most is how much more lenient cops were whenever I had to go on the roadside dyno. I've seen kids get torn a new one for their 50cc being able to go 50kph, rather than the 45 they're allowed. Now with EU laws giving a much larger margin, I modified my 50cc to go 54kph. Exactly 1kph within the margin set by Brussel.
      I get warned to mind my speed quite often, but so far have never gotten a ticket. Friends of mine who don't take their safety as seriously get tickets for things like that. I guess if a cop sees you wearing proper gear, they assume that you are more cautious because you have put in the effort of suiting up.
      I always tell the cops that I wear all that gear in case someone else messes up in such a way that no matter what I do I can't correct their mess.
