Sometimes when you want to quit, it's the the frustration and overwhelm of being new. If you went to all the trouble of becoming a teacher, and you generally enjoy the company of the age group of humans you chose to work with, give yourself at least 3 years before letting yourself quit. Year 2 was so much better than year 1 for me. And I am really excited about Year 3!
Absolutely - it is such a difficult profession to get into, and then it is such a difficult profession to master! Teaching truly is a calling, and the first year or two will test that to its limits. I'm so happy to hear that you're excited for Year 3!! As I'm about to start Year 12, I've come full circle in my career and I couldn't be more excited to get started...
#8 TRUTH! This was actually part of our interview process at my last school. When giving the tour we would ALWAYS introduce the candidate to at least one custodian in the building. First, we would see how they interacted with our staff. After the tour, we would ask them about X person. If they couldn’t remember or had a negative reaction- they were not hired.
I like that you let them know decorating your room is not top priority and that a room grows. You just have to have the furnitur organized and a smile on your face the first day of school. I also was glad to hear you say that taking care of yourself is top priority if you plan to make a difference in students' lives. The last tip I am glad you said is thank your custodians.
Started watching your channel because I’m working on becoming a teacher myself but as a current custodian I wanted to give you a thumbs up! My teachers are great, I couldn’t ask for a better school to work in
This past year was my first year and my school gave us a folder with photos of who to go meet and who they were, along with a space to take notes in order to go around and introduce yourself to certain people (like your custodian and media specialist) and get answers to those questions that a first year teacher doesn’t think of until the moment of, like “how or when to take attendance.” I thought it was a really affective system!
Respectfully, all teachers, regardless of grade or subject taught, my suggestion is to lock up any personal items you bring that you don't want to disappear. I teach in an elementary school and learned this the hard way. If you don't have a secure location, then leave money and debit/credit cards locked in your car. Teaching is hard enough without having to replace your drivers' license, cancelling your credit cards and so forth. No one has time for that.
I just found you. I'm a high school teacher in Belguim. It's my 4th year of teachîng. It's the first year that I can stay at my school for the whole schoolyear and I get my own classroom. In Belgium this is a great thing. I love teaching and love your spin on things. So thanks for the tips.
Somehow Americans tend to like making videos more and they make more, also regarding giving the video presentation seems like a natural flow for some Americans. Not for most Europeans or Dutch that I know. Xx bless and I am curious too as an upcoming teacher
I'm not even a "new" teacher, but your tips were helpful to get my brain back in school mode and to remind me of things. Plus remind me of things to show or tell news staff members.
Thank you so much for this video! I just finished my first year in college and I am studying to be a high school English teacher too! I absolutely love your videos and find them so inspiring! I’m super pumped to teach and have my own classroom someday!
I adore teacher collaboration! Last year I organized a weekly “math meeting” (which eventually became math & science. You’re AWESOME! I subbed and I hope to participate with you eventually. THANK YOU!!!
OH MY GOSH! I needed this video!!! I'm a 20-year veteran educator. Taught English 9-10 for 12 years and have spent the last 8 working in media and technology centers within schools. After a year long sabbatical...I've decided/accepted to return to the classroom and will be teaching English to 8th graders....so to say I'm nervous is an understatement!!! Even though I have so much experience, I feel like moving to middle school AND returning to teaching after being in a different role is like starting all over again!!! Things are SO different now than they were when I was teaching in the late 90s and early 2000s. Thank you for this video.....great tips!!!! And I'm off to watch the other ones too!!!!
These are great tips! Yes, on knowing how to do attendance! I was in a support and then district position for years and had never done attendance digitally. It’s one of those silly things but so important to help the day go smoothly, especially on day one.
It's so funny - attendance is just about the #1 thing that stresses new teachers out because they don't think about it until it is late and the attendance office is calling their classroom... hahaha
Reduce the risk. Use your own pencils. 😂 I agree that you do not need to have your bulletin boards decorated. Just some paper and a border is fine. Don't decorate just for the sake of decorating. Yes, learn the procedures of your school. Every school is different. "Make time for your friends and family". I mentioned the same thing. It's important to have a life outside of school. Great tips Marie! 😀
Thank you Melissa!! When I think back to my first few years teaching (they kept moving me around from room to room the first few years) I stressed out soooo much about having the room totally done before kids got in there. Now I'm actually planning an activity for the first day where kids are going to create something that fills a blank bulletin board I have in the room!
I'm a sophomore in high school and I've been wanting to be a teacher for 6 years (I'm 16) and so I've been researching and watching countless videos and looking at countless sources about teaching and this entire video has put some things across my mind that I've never thought about. Thanks!
AMAZING!! Thank you so much for the thoughtful, practical advice. I am starting my first job as a middle school English teacher this fall, and the thought of having a fully decorated, "Pinterest-worthy" classroom is a bit much. Especially when my current must-have supply list consists of staplers, and tape, and cord organizers so I can stay sane. Love your content!
Man this is great. These are tips I haven't thought of (ie. a filing system at and away from the desk) and aren't obvious like a lot of teacher tips videos.
This is honestly the best new teacher advice I’ve ever heard across RUclips. You’re one of my favorite teacher tubers I follow and you help me out a lot as I’m going into my first year of teaching. Thank you!!
Great tips. I really agree with the work/home life balance tip. I think that is why so many new teachers hit that middle of the year burnout, which ultimately leads so many great teachers leave the profession.
It makes me so sad when I see great teachers work themselves to the point of ultimate burnout and lose their spark. It has definitely happened to me, but luckily the spark reignited itself. :)
The administrivia sounds like madness! I handle very little paper, I find it strange to imagine needing a filing system beyond my desk. Totally agree about the stationary of your own and stationary for kids tip! Bathroom proximity is super important lol!
I'm glad you liked the honesty! ;) I was a little worried about being so blunt, but I think that's the problem - we don't talk enough about how HARD the first couple years are before you get the hang of things...

Purportedly because parents are adamant they must be able to communicate with their kids at all times, but to me this feels like the tail wagging the dog, as students will literally and constantly ignore my requests to put phones away during class, and become very angry when I tell them I have the option to call admins to confiscate the phone and call their parents. Now I will be a 1st year 9-10 ELA teacher for 22/23 and this is a worrisome paradigm. What strategies do you suggest to divert their attention away from their smartphones? It's like an addiction...
Thank you for this video. I will be a first year teacher this year. I have had a few hiccups so I do not know which grade I'll be teaching or what school (I'm in a program that helps us get jobs). By the time I actually sign a contract I will not have had time to set up a cool classroom which makes me kinda sad but your tips make me feel better to try and have all the practical things taken care of.
Holy moly - that's nuts! (and this comes from a teacher who, in my third year teaching, didn't get actually hired with a contract until my second week of being in the classroom...) I'm really happy this video helped a bit - it is so hard when you're first starting out, but so so so so worth it. Good luck and let me know if you need anything!!
Hi, and thank you for your very informative vids! I am a 20 year teacher in his second career. I taught the same program for these 20 years in a health professions career program. I taught Social Studies, 12th grade as part of this program. I was assigned to a whole new school, an alternative high school, and will be responsible for 7-12th grade Social Studies now. I'm a little freaked out to be honest, and wondered if you had a word of wisdom for me??? It feels like I will be a brand new teacher!!! I have pretty high confidence about teaching but am worried I won't be effective, or know enough about the subject matter and balancing their social emotional needs with their academic needs!!!
I love this so much because I want to be a high school teacher but I'm so scared lol I'm still in university so I have time but I am definitely keeping these tips in mind!! 💖💖💖 thank you so much!
I have found that if I feel like I may be getting sick, wine helps. Don’t judge, but 1 glass of wine, then bed usually makes me feel so much better. Wine helps me wind down and maybe alcohol kills the germs from the inside out 🤷🏻♀️. Or it’s the antioxidants from the grapes. I don’t care how it works, I just know it does.
I understand that you've taught different grades and subjects which is exactly what I'd like to do, if you don't mind, can you help me as far as what degrees I'd need to get? Thank you in advance!
i am in no way a teacher, but a soon-to-be-high school student. i want to go into the education field and i am obsessed with watching videos like this!
I have a question. As a Secondary Education college student, I would like to know how are these tips different from actually being a student? The organization and the stress while being a student are really noticeable. So, how does the stress of becoming a teacher differ from taking several college courses in one semester while being broke and working part time?
Well, I think the biggest difference is that, as a teacher, you are being pulled in a million different directions all day long. When you are a student, however, there is definitely a TON of work to do and responsibilities to fulfill, but you have a bit more freedom as to when and how you get things done. I think that when you graduate college and go into the teaching field it is EXTREMELY important to remember that nobody ever started teaching and was perfect at it from Day 1. There is nothing that really compares to what it is like to be in a classroom with students for whose education you are responsible, PLUS you still have other professional responsibilities aside from the student day-to-day. It gets easier with practice... Not sure if I actually answered your question, but I tried! ;)
@@TheCaffeinatedClassroom Thank you so much for posting your video. We students need more professionals who care. My biggest struggle right now is being organized and staying motivated in my personal life. It is really hard being broke all of the time as I only have a part time job and I have to pay for my tuition (I have many attempted college credits to qualify for a Pell Grant right now). I also have to move out of my house because I am living in a home full of abuse and domestic violence. I am so scared. I am not sure if I will be able to pay a small rent and pay for next semester. Yes, there are scholarships out there, but those are not a certain source of income either. It seems that every semester that goes by my life gets more difficult. Nevertheless, I still have to show up to school and try to do my best. It is hard to be broke while I get to see my classmates doing work on their $1000 Macbook or sending texts through 400 dollar watch. I also want to admit that most of my school days I have no means of I paying for a soda or a gas station hot dog. At the same time, my college friends get to eat at Chipotle or at sushi bar. For them is a daily choice: Which expensive take out food joint should I order from? Overall, my point is that teachers like you care about portraying a more realistic approach to the profession rather than describing a depressing and soul less job in which the school district mandates a lesson plan. This gives me some hope that things do get better.
I would say have cell phone caddy by student number. Take role by the caddy but have a procedure in place for those that do not have a phone so they will not be singled out. I used an index card with there number that they placed in the box. Also a seating chart with pictures when possible helped me to remember names. You can also have a reward of if all the students comply or most of them during the week they can be on their phones for a certain amount of time on Friday.
I’m watching this a year after you posted and the tip about changing schools or grades or leaving is a good one. School closures for Covid-19 have allowed me time to think and make the change I need to and I’m switching to a new school in a new grade level. I hope this makes me happier and is a better fit!
I'm a new subscriber, but this is excellent! I'm not a teacher but I work full-time with children and I took a lot away from your list of tips! Thank you
When you said "Be okay with a 1-day weekend," it really struck me because I feel like teachers don't get enough planning time as it is, and then they have to use their unpaid days to plan. I really hope that this changes...
I'm a bit confused... You have both (multiple) single and multiple subject (elementary) credentials? That's sooooo much school, soooo impressive!! I'm not quite aware of credentialing outside California, where I am, and I know we're pretty crazy when it comes to credentialing and rules and things.
I'm headed into year two and I still love watching new teacher videos. Obviously in year two I'm pretty much still a newbie. That self care one is SO important. I struggle with that. I genuinely love what I do so so so much. I love the planning and my kid and everything but I think I really do need to unplug from it some times. This year, I'm going to strive for more self care!!
Great tips! Just discovered your channel from this tag/collab and love it already! I am thinking I will post my top 10 tips soon too and join on the collab/teacher tag.
my kids need to bring there own pens but i have goofy pens for when they forget. They can work because they have a pen but it's a goofy pen so they don't want to use it all the time.
Watching this now before going into my 2nd year of teaching. Last year, I didn’t know how to write a referral several months into school and a fight broke out in my room. Luckily it was my co-taught class so I had help. Great tips!
I've been teaching for 11 years. All types of science classes. I have a tip. Stay away from toxic teachers! Try to recognize it before it consumes you. The teachers who complain about EVERYTHING, who keep talking about how many years they have left until retirement, and who don't talk about educational strategies. I might be missing more.
My husband and i are both ENGLISH teachers too! And i just found your channel and this is the best thing for me. Thank you thank you thank you hahahaha
If you are an English teacher, why are you using a small i in your sentences? Your are starting your sentence with the word and. And i just found your channel??? Really?
🥔 THIS COMMENT SECTION IS SO WHOLESOME, I HOPE YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL 2021. 2020 HAS BEEN DIFFICULT ESPECIALLY FOR TEACHERS, JUST KNOW THAT YOU ARE APPRICIATED 🥔
Nice video.... m also making my mind to go for teaching career. Can u plz tell me how much time does a teacher spend at school..... bcz I have 2 kids and I want to be free when their school is off. Can u give me any suggestions....Thanks.

Oh my gosh I'm completely stealing that idea and telling my admin about it - so simple and yet it is so easy to overlook those sorts of things!
Totally agree!!! On Saturdays, I go grocery shopping, prep all laundry and clean. Sunday, I grade and plan ahead.
Yup! Same here!! How long have you been teaching?
I'm still a freshman in high school but I have always desired to be a high school english teacher. Love your videos keep up the good work!! ❤
Another tip is to check your benefits and retirement options. I devoted my site to help other teachers with this.

Another High School Teacher Channel! Yay! I love to see the different classroom decorations, tips, and experiences.

Starting my MAT program internship this fall, thanks for the tips, they're helpful and the practical kind of things I'm concerned with.
Great tips! That first year is either make or break... I don't think most first years realize that. Love your honest tips!
I'm glad you liked the honesty! ;) I was a little worried about being so blunt, but I think that's the problem - we don't talk enough about how HARD the first couple years are before you get the hang of things...
5 year teacher hump
As a sub in 2021/22 I had a big problem with cellphone use at our school. It is prohibited but most teachers do not enforce it.
SO much sound advice!! Thank you!
I am terrified to start teaching but so excited. Thank you for the advice
Loved it! I've been doing this fr so long, these things have become commonplace. Thanks for reminding them!
Girl. All of this is TRUTH. I’m Year 24 and still work Sundays. I just do. It happens.
Thank you for this video. I will be a first year teacher this year. I have had a few hiccups so I do not know which grade I'll be teaching or what school (I'm in a program that helps us get jobs). Tip #3 is spot on. It feels like nothings mine anymore by the third of fourth class. Good tip to keep some of your stuff in a designated area.
Oh My GoD... You talked, like if I had told you everything I been experiencing my first week at school.
I love this so much because I want to be a high school teacher but I'm so scared lol I'm still in university so I have time but I am definitely keeping these tips in mind!! 💖💖💖 thank you so much!

Great tips to avoid teacher burnout!

Thanks for the information. I’m in the process of becoming a certified teacher.
Best of luck!
How does one get in on these collabs?
Such an informative video.
my kids need to bring there own pens but i have goofy pens for when they forget. They can work because they have a pen but it's a goofy pen so they don't want to use it all the time.
Watching this now before going into my 2nd year of teaching. Last year, I didn’t know how to write a referral several months into school and a fight broke out in my room. Luckily it was my co-taught class so I had help. Great tips!
Love the video!
Thank you!!!
Really?
