  • Watch until the end for my reflections on how I've taught annotating text over the years, and how it has evolved to what you see here... I spend the majority of classroom time anywhere but the front of the room, but teaching some things (like how to annotate texts) take direct instruction and demonstration as I think aloud! Enjoy!

Your asking a student if they actually want to speak out loud is amazing.

As a first year teacher, this is so helpful. I also have ninth grade and I am always looking for the most effective way to reach and teach my students. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Love how you've explained annotation AND that it's focused. So helpful for the students. I get so tired of hearing teachers complain that students don't know how to do something. I respond by asking the teacher, "well, teach them to do it the way you need them to!"

I love your authentic example of teaching in this video! I teach 3rd grade but I think I could see myself teaching middle or high school too. The classroom management with older students is what makes me unsure about it.

This is off topic, but as someone who grew up before the internet I find it fascinating to see the child in this video and to think that when she grows up she will be able to see how she was at that age and to see how her mother interacted with her, with all the nuance and context. I only have some photos of my childhood and have gained some context through conversations with my parents, but so much gets lost over time. Anyway, I enjoyed the video, I came here because I'm thinking of possibly teaching and wandered off thinking about something besides the point of the video, haha. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience and I smile at the thought of how your daughter will look back and see how she was loved and of the warmth that will bring to her heart.

My sister accuses me of "mom turrets" as well. Love the mix of home and work. It is also nice you saw something wasn't working and you stepped back to teach it differently. Very cool.

This is exciting! I tried to teach annotating to 6th graders for the Computer Class I'm student-teaching in. It was a "because you did not follow instructions/decided not to listen" assignment, but I really want to get back to it because it was something New for them, helps then build language/vocabulary, and is a way to show that literacy is important in learning about computers. I just need them to collectively pay attention long enough to get through a good 7-8 minutes of it (their attention spans are terrible).

I love this idea for teaching annotating! I teach 9th grade as well, and I don't think my freshman know how to annotate yet. I'm excited to try teaching it this way after spring break! Eloise is adorable!!

Your daughter is the cutest thing 😂😂 my niece also tries so hard to feed me whatever she sees near and I'm constantly reinforcing the same lines "No, its okay. I'm full, thank you though. Oh you want me to eat that too? I'm still full, no you dont have to get that, thank you, do you want to eat it?" Kids are so hilarious to me 😂 she also has a habit of neglecting her food if I eat anything she offers and then it turns into her meal going into my stomach LOL they love trying to take care of others, dont they? 😂
Though this video is old, Thank you so much for incorporating actual teaching into it, I'm on the prowl for videos that have teaching clips 😊💞

Extremely useful video on annotations. The annotation without purpose is just putting the lines or underlines on everything that seems important to the student-well explained by you. I just wanted to know as to what you wrote on the margins and upload more videos on annotation so that it becomes so easy for other teachers to teach without any trouble. Thank you1

Thanks so much for filming you teaching! I find it super helpful to watch other teachers teaching English. Just something I noticed: the background music was a bit loud at points (such as in the beginning and when you were teaching) so I found it a bit difficult to hear you!

Just found your channel and I commend and recommend your comments on annotating. If i could most respectfully make a suggestion to improve your video, the bouncy music should be background atmosphere and shouldn't compete with what you are saying.

Yes you talk too fast in lecture, let students keep up with your thoughts please, you are catering only to fast thinkers instead of the majority of students. At least with video we can replay. Posting the full lecture would have been nice.
