Tip #1: Don't use you own money to buy anything for the class.
Tip #2: Ignore the curriculum. Make your own.
Tip #3: Your classroom will never be perfect.

I’m starting my first year 22-23 as a first grade teacher. I did not go to school for teaching but I am on a provisional license. I’m terrified and excited at the same time. I am going to reach out to my mentor as soon as school is out to get the curriculum so I can make lesson plans. I am getting bins and books, and believe communication is so important. I am happy I found your videos

Absolutely get a feel for the curriculum and how to read a Teachers Manual. They don’t teach that in college. Pacing guides as well. Read up on abilities of the average age your teaching. That way you don’t stress them out or yourself by asking them to do something most arent capable of doing. Like for crafts or independent work. And plan out your morning routine for beginning your day.

Absolutely. I just got hired for my first year of teaching, classes start in 2 weeks and while my social studies curriculum is pretty straightforward I am totally lost when going over the English curriculum. I'm going to spend some time over the weekend with a more experienced teacher to try and figure it out

Also , repeat after me . Consistent Classroom Behavior Management Plan .
Take it from me as a former autistic sped school student if you the teacher do not have a plan to consistently manage behavior in the classroom that you can stick with and constantly enforce and act on then you risk winding up doing nothing but screaming at the kids and getting talked back to and shut down or even shut out to where teaching students anything becomes impossible .
Also , if you are cornered into doing something with the students or having the students do something that is outside of their thought processes and you get a negative response from the student as long as they are not getting violent or destructive then do not take it personally because they lack that endurance and grit in them and they need help and patience to build that up because they are struggling and when you stick with your student and work with your student(s) through their struggles regardless of how many times they try to push you away they will end up loving you for it in the end when whatever the challenging task or moment is completed .
I hope that this helps .

Thank you so much for the advice! I have been teaching thirteen years and still am learning. Here's my advice for newcomers. Always assume you don't know everything and take time to constructively reflect on your progress. Give yourself grace so that you can give your own students grace as well. Relationships with students and parents is the key.

Comment about curriculum missing some aspects: Find out the curriculum ASAP but then learn how married to it the school is in terms of fidelity: ELA example would be if it is a Readers Workshop model based on Socratic Seminar - how will you get in the Daily 5 type phonics, handwriting and spelling practice activities as curriculum? etc

Thank you, I am going to be opening my first classroom at end of July. I'm not new to education as I have been working as support staff for the last 7 years, 5 as a substitute teacher and the last 2 as a special education paraprofessional. My biggest piece of stress, nerves and anxiety is I am going to a completely new school and going from a traditional district based school to a charter school. Also because I won't have that institutional knowledge, from knowing the building I had been in and knowing the staff and being able to quickly reach out to them if needed. I am going to be teaching the same grade I student taught in 4th.
I know what I have been doing is going to make things a lot easier and I have experiences to draw on, but yet there is that small amount of fear that - its all on me now I am not that tag team partner to jump in help. One positive is that the math curriculum is the same, but it's a completely different reading curriculum so I am little nervous about using it.

Calling all K-12 public school teachers in the US! I'm seeking your valuable insights for a teacher interview paper in my EDUC306 course Assessment of Young Children. I have a few questions that could use your expertise:
    1. What assessment methods do you utilize to track student progress?
    2. Based on your descriptions of assessments, could you identify examples of authentic assessments and more formal/standardized assessments?
    3. How do you utilize assessment information gathered from various methods?
    4. In what ways are students engaged in the assessment process?
    5. How are families involved in assessments? Do you gather information from them, and how is assessment data communicated to families?
Your input would greatly enrich my understanding and enhance my research. Thank you in advance for your help!

Thank you for this video. I found your channel a number of years ago, and I teach in England. I'm fascinated by all the information that you give, as there are some huge differences between British and American schools, however I have adapted and used some of your approaches with my own students. I just wondered if you wouldn't mind clarifying something for me, as a primary teacher in England we teach every subject on the curriculum to our class, such as English, Maths, Science, Phonics, History, Geography, Music, Religious Education, PHSE, Art and Tech. However I have noticed that in this video you mention about people that already have their job will know which subjects they will be teaching. Do you guys focus on particular subjects, or do you teach every subject on the curriculum? Thank you

    • @mrs_katie_in_elementary
      @mrs_katie_in_elementary  2 года назад +1

Primary teachers teach every subject! Typically around 4th grade elementary schools “departmentalize” their classes meaning one teacher would teach ELA, another Math, about Science/SS and the classes would rotate! It varies by school but in the intermediate grades departmentalizing is more common!

    • @mrs_katie_in_elementary

I honestly don’t use a lot of the wonders materials for my small groups… I teach the phonics skill of the week in an explicit manner during small group using white boards, sound boxes, decodable texts, etc. that I supplement in with the wonders materials!
I introduce my rotation flow the second week of school with super simple independent activities the students can do and I only open two centers at that time, not all four. Then about two weeks later I add the next two centers! I have a whole Vlogmas video from December about how I organize my rotation flow!
