    It's funny, a lot of kids don't realize the first day of school is a lot more scary for teachers.

    • @CJReynolds

      Kids always look at adults and think they have it together or all figured out. Kids don’t realize that’s not really true. Which is why when adults are honest or have #realrap with kids the kids respond really well.

    Your classroom looks amazing. I'm in week 5 of my first year of teaching, and my kids humbled me straight away. They didn't care that I'm smart and funny, or that I'd read a ton of pedagogical books. They just wanted to know if I was going to be useful to them or not. We're getting along fine now, but that first week was definitely a little traumatic.

    I just finished my first year. Students seemed very angry when I reinforced my rules. It was very tiring. Yes, I was dealing with the school's toughest 8th Grade class since they were kindergarten. I struggled to build relationships with disruptive students. I gave a lot of love and passion. I'm going to try another year but I'm a traumatized quite a bit from my first year.
    I learned way more than I taught and I'm grateful for these past 10 months.

      +Marissa it's important to remember that teaching is a craft. Be patient with yourself and put the kids first and you will succeed. My first year was hilariously bad. I've had stuff thrown at me, kids threaten to kick my ass, and all other manner of madness. It passes and you get better. Next year some kid will show up that needs you. Be for that child the teacher you always wanted. Let me know if I can ever do anything. For real.

    Love love how your classroom is decorated! Very much my style, I want to teach elementary but most teachers have these crazy bright colors and chevron patters and clip art thingys. So not me! But I guess the kids like it, what do you think? I love the hanging books you have up too! Can you do a classroom tour?

    • @CJReynolds
      @CJReynolds  7 лет назад +26

      +Sporty Spice thanks so much! My room is really important to me. I'm there more than my own living room! I too dislike most of the stuff they have at teacher stores. My room has become a hangout for most of the students and teachers, which is a total honor because I love hanging out with them.
      I've had first graders in my class and they love it. Especially, the tree and the flying books. I think kids just love wonder and creativity. I say make your room a place you would have loved to be in when you were a kid.
      I'll make a classroom tour video this week. Please let me know if you have any questions. I'd be happy to help! Thanks for checking out my channel!

    I loved your advice on putting your name on everything. My first year of teaching was 23 years ago. My first two years at that school, I lost my desk chair: graduation took place in the gym, so they would grab all the free chairs from the building. My third year, I put my name on that chair so I didn't have to hunt it down the next fall.
    But I ended up leaving after that 3rd year. One of my students has been teaching in that classroom for the past 16 years. She says she is always asked what that word on the chair means. (I have a very long, Polish last name.) So I'm still making my mark there!

Sooo I was dying laughing when you mentioned that you can kill yourself trying to reinvent the wheel to make the perfect lesson plan. That is EXACTLY what I did for a week straight. I was even thinking of teaching a very complicated art that I haven’t ever even done myself bc of course all of the (awesome) art lessons I have taught and written in the past were definitely not good enough 🙄. I really appreciate this video. I am in the process of finishing my 6-12 ag science teaching certification and will begin teaching next year. I am doing my training through alternative certification so I did not get my degrees in teaching. I have gotten better at teaching through making educational videos on my channel and have worked as a graduate teaching assistant for 2 years now so I have experience teaching college classes, but it will be different ball game in HS im sure. To be real honest my anxiety is there whether I want to admit it or not. I don’t think it’s because I’m afraid to begin teaching, rather I think it is going into the unknown and not knowing what to expect and I’m sure that will only get better once I begin this journey, but it’s something I haven’t really shook yet. Thank you again for your videos. They are giving me a lot of good information that I need and helps me to gain more assurance that this will all work out in the end. Subscribed 😊

    I ❤ the setup of your classroom! Very creative! 😀 I most definitely agree with your tip about relationships are king. Positive interactions with students are very important to classroom management. Confidence is also key. Natural and logical consequences are also important. Even when I have to discipline a student, I use logical consequences. Example: If a student is kicking a basketball underneath the pavilion or gymnasium, I will give a verbal warning first. If it happens again, I just walk over to a student or group of students and withhold the ball from them for a few minutes until they have thought about their actions. They typically won't get upset at me for it and they typically apologize after a few moments! 😀 I also make it my point to be nice and loving to everyone. By the way, if you haven't already noticed, I am a Middle School Paraprofessional in Physical Education! 😀 When I had to cover a different classroom last week, many of my students were happy to see me because they know I care, even though I have very high expectations for behavior and academics! I would ❤ to teach 4th grade in the near future! 😀

    Any high school teachers here? Is there a default error proof way of managin your class during your first day as a teacher?
    Would this always work? Come in with a serious face, stand in front of the class until everyone becomes silent (or be sitted), introduce yourself, lay out groundrules and reinforce it by penalizing offenders (shows you mean business in implementing rules) - but then slowly loosen up by getting to know each of them personally.
