Hi Derek, we live a few miles away from the beaten track,no mains water or main sewage.. i installed a septic tank 15-20yrs ago. We have the sediments taken away every 5years, Family of 4, but never allow dishwaher water or washing machine water into it. Also very careful with bleach products, if you allow the natural bacteria to grow in your sespit tank, it wont smell. Looks like it needs cleaning out now!. Also surface and drains not going into it.😊😊

I was on a cess pit abroad in Cyprus for years -
NEVER use bleach or toilet cleaner or ANY toilet product as it will kill the bacteria in the pit & stop it working
This INCLUDES the kitchen sink if it drains into it
NEVER use shop bought toilet paper it contains bleached paper and will stop the pit working - use paper especially for cess pits or dump it in a basket next to toilet like they do abroad
To FIX the pit clean the pipes out with clean water - flush the toilet about 10 times
THEN put about 5 pound in weight of liver from the butcher -(the fresher the better ) in the pit - liquidise it if you can so it will work quicker
This will get the bacteria working in the pit
You might have to repeat this once a week with a couple of pounds of liver - for a couple of weeks to top up the bacteria - but it will fix the pit
A working pit should not smell
    Good luck

Soak away should be at least 1 metre square, and 1m deep or it won't work .

How anything in England can be considered "off grid" is beyond me... It's a small country which has been fully inhabited for thousands of years.

@@xephael3485 our water comes from a well our poo ends up in our garden and the gas gets delivered by tanker. The only thing we get off the national grid is the electricity and that comes overground and goes off all the time. Maybe the thing that is beyond you is the what off grid actually means.

I notice you didn't perform the mandatory percolation test to determine the soil’s permeability before digging the soakaway. This test ensures the ground can absorb and disperse the water effectively.

I said when you were cutting the trees on the grounds of safety for the gas tank . The proximity of that opening / tank is more of an issue if you look at the regs re bulk storage tank siting . But you have the tape measure not me 👍

Is it not an open cavity though somewhere to gather in the event of a leak . I know it's a lot of it's but's and maybe' s but the whole job is that . And when I used to fit them some jobs needed a lot of hoops jumped through before you could get them passed in certain areas . I will add in case some don't know lpg is heavier than air . So they know what us old duffers are prattling on about 😅
Ps if you get to the stage you have to change to a septic tank or anything speak to Mike Dixon at JDP at Longtown HQ 👍 what he doesn't know about drainage and products isn't worth knowing.
