You just answered a question I have asked probably 10 doctors and they wouldn't if couldn't answer it. So I have MCAS, which is a major overactive immune response in the body. I have had doctors recommend supplements for the immune system…which didn't make sense to me. Because why would we be boosting my immune system when we should be calming it down?! I would love for you to do a video about MCAS. And maybe another one about Ehlers-Danlos, POTS, and MCAS being diagnosed a lot together.
I have all 3 as well, but I also get sick very frequently and have diagnosed immunodeficiency, while still having MCAS. Basically, we *only* have an overreaction with mast cells, not other immune cells. Us EDSers in particular are more likely to have trouble with both. Underactive and overactive in different parts at the same time.
ME, hEDS and POTS here. EDS tends to be the main culprit in all of these comorbid combos. It would be nice to see more doctors discuss these conditions and spread information since they're still widely unkown.
The immune system isn't a dimmer switch. It has dozens of tiny parts. MCAS is about mast cells specifically going haywire, not the entire immune system. So "immune boosting" supplements may be beneficial if they help "rebalance" what's going on... but since we don't know how most "immune boosting" stuff works, this isn't a given.
Omg the immune boosting part makes my mum's experience with Spirulina make so much sense. It was recommended by a naturopath but she could never tolerate it; gave her aches and pains and a rash. She always assumed she was allergic. Fast forward about 7 years later and we've both been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition and told to avoid immune stimulants/boosters like the plague!
For anyone saying that it tastes bad, you should try spirulina cereal!!!! I get mine from a company called DXN, but there’s others out there. I’ve been eating it for years and it’s one of my favorite things to eat
That got me too. Also "a food so rich in nutrients astronauts would take it on a space mission with them" was also kind of funny. Like yeah, there's probably quite a few. Astronauts gotta eat too.
You missed one, it's anti inflammatory properties are good enough that its better for gym goers to avoid it as it can reduce inflammation on the muscles post workout enough to slightly mute the adaptation process. By the same token it can be beneficial for people doing ironman type events approaching their competition date.
Do note, while the human body does need plants, it also has difficulty absorbing all the nutrients from plant proteins, requiring eating much more food to compensate. You still require a balance with meat and vegetables to get all the nutrients and amino acids you need to be healthy.
Small correction: There are twenty amino acids in human proteins, not nine. However, only nine are essential, and the remaining eleven can usually be synthesized from those nine if necessary.
Chlorela is actually easier to grow and way more nutrient rich, but needs processing afterwards to break its cell wall, as otherwise it just goes in and then out of your body still intact.
one thing he is forgetting to mention is because it is an algae our guts have an INCREDIBLY hard time digesting and absorbing said nutrients in it, meaning a MASSIVE chunk like the majority of it is wasted when we eat it.
As an italian i spent the first 16 years of my life thinking that the "erba sbirulina" was just a stupid gag made up by one of my favorite youtubers. When, a few months ago, i discovered that it was a real plant, my mind was blown
For those wondering what you can mix Spirulina with to mask its taste, I like to mix it with cranberry and pineapple juice (or either one if you don’t have both), or lemonade. It won’t completely hide its taste, but it’s a lot more manageable to drink. And after a while, you get used to it so it’s not that bad.
