Some scientists have compared them to ectoparasites, and yes Wikipedia calls cochineal a "sessile parasite," but they are not so different from other plant pests like aphids, and we usually don't call plant-feeding things parasites.
If you read the definition of a parasite, any pest is a parasite "an organism that lives in or on an organism of another species (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other's expense. "the parasite attaches itself to the mouths of fishes"
If something uses something else and injures or kills the first in the process, they are indeed a type of parasite. Ticks, lice, aphids, demodex mites (the bugs on our eyelashes) are all scientifically classified as parasites. Even if you don't classify them as such.
Not really, since a parasite is something that sucks out and steals nutrients(Generally the case). There are plants that parasitize other plants as well. Technically, aphids and scale insects are like the lice and ticks (I know those are in the arachnid family) of animals but for plants. Copying from a source that I found down below. "Aphids transmit pathogens to host plants [6] and are therefore recognized as serious agricultural pests [7, 8]. Thus, the manner in which host plants resist aphid parasitism and the ways in which aphid species overcome the resistance of their hosts are important issues for understanding evolutionary arms races [1, 2]."
@@Bumbulers_Bricks the definition of a parasite includes living in or on the host for an extended period of time. Even if you don't classify them as such.
True. Plus if we did then every herbivore would be parasitic.😂
Non-parasitic herbivores eat part of a plant and then leave, so their relationship with the plant is not parasitic.
Fun fact: animals are not the only organisms that can be considered parasites! There are parasitic fungi, plants, and even single celled organisms!
- sincerely, a biology student who knows too much about parasites
The sound effects sound like a curious George episode just hit me with nostalgia
I thought it was Zelda botw😅
Duded videos are so ass, he plays braindead nursery rhyme music ever .5 seconds.
Nerds lore just dropped, the colorful mini yoshis are actually parasites.
I eat these fairly regularly, yes, but not everyone in the audience will. My aunt is vegetarian, and so she checks ingredients labels and doesn't buy ones with carmine. Maybe there are vegetarians for whom something like this doesn't count, but I'm also sure that my aunt isn't alone in that.
Also, even for me, it's hardly every day. Like, today I had blueberry yoghurt, grapes, banana bread, a meat pie, a croissant, lasagne, broccoli, and a chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Some of that had beef, I'm sure some of it had other bugs, but none of it had carmine.
oh so that's why cochineal beetles shells are used to craft red dye in terraria.
I’ve eaten crickets so this really doesn’t bother me.
I'm allergic to those bugs and one time I almost died
It can't be parasitic if its crushed beyond death. The parasitic characteristics are only present when its alive. It's just crushed bug body parts at this point.
Exactly.
And besides, they are "parasitic" because they spend most of their lives sucking on plant juices.
*Parasitic insect exists*
Humans:yum
No. Theres a higher concentration of red 40 in the nerds ropes you showed. Look at the ingredients list again. For anyone who didnt know, ingredient labels are listed from most abundant to least. :)
This music in this channel is amazing.
LOVE the piano 🤌🔥
If you eat any of those every day, there's a problem
Especially lipstick
yogurt ?
Wait so you're telling me I have been eating INSECTS luckily I brush my teeth
Insects better for you than dyes concocted in a lab
Insects are not bad for you. You eat around 1.5 Kilograms of them per year without noticing it
@@paww2696how much protein?
@@PublicityAndyt Not much as you can think because, there are 365 days in a year, but if you combine them together, then you have a lot of it.
@@paww2696wheres your source? (Im not doubting it im just wondering what the main contributors are)
Well humans used to eat bugs all the time and some cultures they still do. I think it’s so cool that someone figured out how to do this.
I could watch this short all day!
Gimme bugs over chemicals
Hey man, I’ve got some unfortunate news about what the bugs are made of
@@waynehylicsorganic/nature over chemical/artificially created
@@azteceyes5613 I really hate to break this to you but literally everything in nature is also made out of chemicals
Chemicals make up EVERYTHING. But I get your point.
@@waynehylicsI believe they meant as in "artificial" and not organic.
The way this is edited makes it seem like an edutainment TV show you would watch when you were a kid. I love it.
Nah.. a horror narrative to me....
I actually knew some of this because in Terraria cochneal beetles drop an item we can make into red dye in the game
Turns a deep red... So, blood. We're using their blood as a freaking color!! 💀
Tastes great! Scientist and FDA approved. That's all that matters. 😂
They should call it murder red. That would be a much cooler name.
Stupid woke
HELL YEAH

This guy could make a 10 second explanation into a 20 minute video with the way he talks

Ok.

I've know about this for years. I used to freak out people as a kid.
