  • Hoshizaki ice machine troubleshooting. This Hoshizaki ice machine was not making ice. I turned the machine on and reset the machine. I then found multiple problems including separating evaporators and bad thermostatic expansion valves(TXV’s). This hoshizaki ice machine will need to be repaired or replaced.

    I’m wondering if you were to replace the evaporators if it would stop refrigerant from flooding back to the compressor. My thinking is that with the separated plates it’s under less load therefore causing flood back.

      I thought the same thing at first. The separation was pretty rough when looking from the bottom up but it only amounted to about 5-10% of ice formation loss. The areas that had good contact weren’t forming ice very well either. If the TXVs were working properly they would have restricted the flow of refrigerant causing the areas with good contact to form large cubes. If there were zero load on the evaporator I could see your point being 100% possible. But at the end of the day I could be totally wrong. lol. I literally have no idea what I’m doing. You make a good point. This is definitely something I’m going to think about for a while. Thank you.

    just curious, how did you determine the TXV was bad?

      That’s a good question. I definitely should have place a gauge on the machine so we could see the refrigerant pressures. Long story short, the TXV should have been closing and restricting the flow of refrigerant so the refrigerant wouldn’t make its way the compressor.

    Had the same issue after changing the txv, who knows how long the location had it running with a bad txv but unit was grinding before the change

      I’ve also heard that if the evaporator is separated then you’ll have frost on the compressor.

    Does one brand last longer than any other if their given correct maintenance? What's your opinion?

      This is a tough question… I think they’re all pretty much the same.

    How much does a new txv and evap cost?

      Different models cost different amounts. Hard to say exactly.
